    My clutch has been loud for a long time. It was really annoying, but would get quiet when I pulled in the clutch lever. I did buy a clutch boss holding tool. I replaced the whole clutch basket assembly, but I leaned the bike onto the side stand and didn't need to drain the oil. After heating the boss nut, a 1/2 inch impact wrench made it easy to get off. I may rebuild the old basket at some point, but it took a long time to get this bad. I have a service manual, but your video was really helpful. Thank you!!!

      And now done. I went with an Extreme Creations clutch basket as it can be opened and the rubber dampeners replaced. It got rid of the annoying clonking sounds and a lot of vibration.

      @YAMAHAXSR900 correct, the basket and cushion failures are pretty common.
      The gloves are nitrile which is a recommended mechanic glove when involving oil and solvents, no fail there.
      The oil change intervals for this engine are from 4,000 miles to 6,000 miles depending on FZ09 vs MT09. Worst case the oil had about 3k miles on it, if the previous owner serviced it regularly. That's an unknown variable so I gave the total miles in the bike instead. With a few k miles on the oil I'd expect it to have some color though, so likely nothing wrong there either.
      Thanks for watching.

    Hello and thanks for sharing this instructional video. Today I replaced the broken clutch basket of my MT 09 Tracer (2016) for a completely new one.
    I solved one problem but now I create a new problem while putting all the parts back in reverse.
    So I have two questions.
    Q1: Is it normal that the cam chain should not be too tight because I cannot get it tight.
    Q2: One of the six bolts that secures the clutch springs is broken. What can happen when i am driving now that I am missing a spring?
    Thanks in advance for your response.

    • @Skipshift
      @Skipshift  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If the chain will not tighten at all I would look to make sure the chain guides are in place properly first and go from there. Making sure the tensioner is the right length to put tension against the guide.
      For the missing or broken spring, you will have less pressure in the clutch pack which could cause slipping and extra heat and wear in the clutch pack. I definitely wouldn't ride it like that unless you absolutely have to have it on the road.

    Great video and new subscriber. Thanks I have 2020 Tracer 900 GT with 16,000 miles. In addition to hearing the noise of the clutch I felt like a vibration that I thought was chain and sprockets that needed to be changed. I changed last week and I feel part of the vibration that I felt before. Do you believe that this could also be related to this chronic clutch problem? Is this noise something I should worry about and do what you did or can I just ignore the noise?

    • @Skipshift
      @Skipshift  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and the sub! 👍 The noise is pretty likely going to be related to the clutch basket. Either being cracked or broken, or just worn cushions. If it's just the cushions it can be ignored for a little while without any major repercussions, I just couldn't stand the noise any longer lol

    It could be those rubbers in my case too? On idle when cold its pretty quiet, when heated up, i hear rattle, when i pull the clutch it stops. Also my handlebars vibrate little.

    • @Skipshift
      @Skipshift  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If the rubbers are bad or have shrunk they normally make noise when cold too though. It could be regular clutch basket noise if it goes away when you pull in the clutch lever. It would be hard to say for sure without being there to hear it first hand.

  • @stoffle123
    @stoffle123 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great vid! Do you know if the fix is permanent, or will the issue come back over time? And what would be the risk of leaving it unattended, will it only get "gronkier" over time or is there a chance of something breaking?

    • @Skipshift
      @Skipshift  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only time will tell if the fix is permanent or semi-permanent. It's all down to how the newer cushions in the basket hold up to heat and oil over time.
      If it isn't replaced or repaired there could be a risk of breaking clutch plates if the slack gets too far out of hand. Also transmission components could see some wear due to the slack causing the gears to be impacted every time it takes up slack. Pulling in the clutch earlier as you come to a stop will lessen whatever damage it may cause if you need to put off the repair for a while.

    • @stoffle123
      @stoffle123 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Skipshift thanks for the reply! Let's hope the new cushions turn out to be a permanent fix 🙏
      Regarding fixing it or not, I figured that'd be the case... I've just picked up a used tracer from the local dealer and after getting familiar for a bit I noticed the vibration which is more than likely the gronk as well. They recon it's just a tracer thing and no need to worry about it... Was a bit in doubt about how much I should push for a repair, so your insights and thoughts are most welcome. Thanks a lot!

    @randomchannel1167 ปีที่แล้ว +2

  • @vincesimard
    @vincesimard 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have this same problem but i'm wondering if leaving the clutch basket alone is risky? The guy at the dealership said to never touch the clutch until it starts slipping, and never change the basket.

    • @Skipshift
      @Skipshift  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I wouldn't live by that advice. There's plenty of things to go wrong before the clutch starts slipping. As for changing the basket, the new one will wear in shortly after you start riding.
      Not doing anything yet is probably fine though. The cushions being worn and causing the noise isn't going to necessarily cause a catastrophic failure. If it gets really bad it could contribute to breaking fingers on the clutch basket. If it gets too noisy it would be worth asking another mechanic to listen and diagnose themselves.
      Ride safe 🤘

    This was very interesting. I'd like to hear what your bike sounds like engine running, in neutral and clutch released. My MXT850 sounds like a bucket of bolts rattling around. I'm told CP3s sound like that. Would have an idea why that is and if it can be improved?

    • @Skipshift
      @Skipshift  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The CP3 is definitely loud by nature. They idle like a 3 cylinder diesel and having an exhaust on them seems to make it even louder with more clatter.
      My bike has a full Akrapovic exhaust on it and is pretty loud at idle. The thin walled tubing just carries the tinny exhaust note to a whole new level. Off idle and under throttle they don't have as much clattering going on. It's one of those things that will either drive you nuts or you learn to accept it haha 👍

    That remarkable. What would the rattle be in neutral?

    • @Skipshift
      @Skipshift  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it comes and goes as you pull the clutch lever it could just be the slipper clutch. They tend to have a little more noise than a standard clutch when they have no load against them. Depending on the miles it could be slack between the clutch plates and the basket also.

    • @Kyre5049
      @Kyre5049 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Skipshift okay maybe the slack? Only noticed when removed the clutch. Sounds like a grinding, moaning, whirring, noise more than a rattle. I did have to take several attempts aligning the outer clutch and made inner case repairs as a previous owner over tightened and snapped the thread housing in the clutch case and required JB Weld. Didn’t require new threads at least not yet. Gosh thank you. Could I pull the cover and rotate in neutral to re create the noise or would the lack of oil flowing hinder this? This must mean maybe makes the same noise in gear being a constant mesh transmission just not able to hear or feel the vibration due to the rpm, sprockets moving ,etc 🐠. Thanks Skipshift.

Been in storage since bought it 7 months ago but I've had the problem since first ride out.. Never test road big mistake on my part.. Question is even though your bike is Gen 2... • @Skipshift
      @Skipshift  ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be that the rubbers are compressed or hardened and unable to absorb the jittery power at low rpm. Definitely worth taking a look at the driven gear slack to see if it's a noticeable amount.
      I notice much less low rpm jitters with the new basket installed.

    • @gpeaes

      Not checking your valve clearances is disrespecting your engine. As a Yamaha service tech, your CP3 has about a 66% chance of eating an exhaust valve in the next 10k-15k miles. Good luck!

    what year model is the bike and will this noise cause problems if not fixed?

    • @Skipshift
      @Skipshift  ปีที่แล้ว

      This video would directly cover the FZ09 and MT09 up to 2020. The 2021 and newer models still have some clutch noise, but I haven't seen if it is caused by this problem or if it is noise from the slipper mechanism.
      Depending on how severe the slack is, it can possibly cause broken clutch disks and the rear plate slipping on the driven gear also introduces small metal shavings into the oil sump. It's not a 100% chance to cause bigger problems, but it definitely could increase the risk of bigger failures.
