Yamaha FJ09/FZ09/MT09 Tracer Slipper Clutch Upgrade and cable update

  • My 2015 FJ09 had a traditional clutch. The 2017 and newer model has a slipper/assist clutch upgrade. This is a great safety, performance and comfort upgrade for about $300. My clutch was already on its last legs due to being misadjusted when I bought it, so as long as I was in there I did the update. While I had it apart, I also replaced the high friction, failure-prone cable with one that has the smooth cable-guide noodle but the clutch lever.

    This is awesome! My clutch has become increasingly loud, and only at 14,000 miles. I've already done the clutch cable upgrade, but I will likely do this slipper clutch soon. It's so bad that it shakes the whole bike. It does go away when the lever is pulled in, but I think it's time to upgrade to the slipper. Thanks for this great video!

    Great Vid, thanks for sharing! I'm not brave enough to try this upgrade but was looking for tips on the clutch setup. My MT09 2015 is hard on the hand was going to have a check inside. Looks like my rod is not aligned (dot and arrow). Should be turned in more for sure. What problems do u think that could cause short and long term? Cheers

    • @blurglide
      @blurglide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You basically wouldn't get a consistent amount of lever motion per unit of cable throw. If it's misaligned though, someone has probably messed with your clutch

    • @daicol
      @daicol 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blurglide I think I will open it tomorrow and try and align it. Will check the disks and set the spring nut torques too. I bought the bike last october and the more I look at it the more I find dodgy work! Could be something related to the Cam tensioner recall that Yamaha did last year? I guess I can open the clutch cover without draining any oil? Do you think I should change the gasket just for doing the work above? Will probably find some suprises inside! Thanks. I was so jealous when you moved your clutch with 2 fingers at the clutch side!

    Great video. Thanks for posting. I just purchased a 2015 fj-09 with 2,800 miles on it. It rides like new so I won’t need to upgrade the clutch but I will replace the clutch cable for sure. Great informative video. I assume no more slippage? Did you buy the PartsShark bundle?

    • @blurglide
      @blurglide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's working great. Nevertheless, I flipped that spring cushion around yesterday, just to be safe, and kind of damaged the gasket again trying to get the pull rod lined up with the housing, so I ordered a new one. I got the parts shark XSR900 bundle, but since my old clutch was slipping I replaced all of the friction disks that are to be reused in the upgrade, too. Everything was new.

    • @keeno86
      @keeno86 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blurglide yeah the pull rod alignment is easily the most frustrating part of the whole job. Did you do any research into aftermarket plate stacks? Ive totally burned mine up after about 20k miles, and I'm torn wether I should go the slipper route or just get a new stack and keep the stock hub. Did you notice a difference between the old and new cable?

    • @blurglide
      @blurglide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keeno86 I did not! How'd they burn up so quick? The problem with mine was they always seemed to drag, even with the clutch fully engaged, it'd really *thunk* into gear and want to creep forward. I kept reducing play until that went away, but I wasn't getting full engagement at that point, which is what caused the clutch to prematurely wear out in the first place.

    • @keeno86
      @keeno86 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blurglide that's the same feeling I've had. I think that in combination with track time and (bad) wheelies is what killed it. Would you recommend the slipper? Big difference in shifting? I am mostly considering it for the fact that itd probably prevent premature clutch wear again

    • @blurglide
      @blurglide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keeno86 Absolutely. HUGE difference in smoothness, even if you don't nail the rev matching. It feels like a new bike. Effort is maybe 1/3 as much so much better in stop and go. I'm sure clamping force is much greater under load, too. You can feel the ramps....the last little bit of takeup is more abrupt and positive. As long as you're in there spend the extra $220 for the slipper/assist upgrade. For shifter feel though...Rotella T6. Wow.

    I have a 2015 MT-09 Tracer, the clutch works fine, except it is very heavy to actuate, have you found yours any lighter since undertaking the upgrade?

    • @blurglide
      @blurglide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes- the assist clutch has much lighter springs because the clamping force comes more from the ramps than from spring pressure alone. I'd say lever effort is less than half of the old clutch. I have excellent grip strength, but the is much easier even for me in stop and go traffic

      It's a V-stream plus. Makes it more useable year-round, but I still get enough buffeting on the top of my helmet to make things blurry at high speed. Also, the curves focus sunlight and as mildly melted my instrument cluster

  • @unicycle52
    @unicycle52 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At 17:30 in the video, the action of the lever and comments are WRONG. The clutch cable will have no tension on it and the clutch won't release if the actuator arm moves that freely. When the cover is installed correctly, the resistance on that actuator arm should be more than you can move with your thumb. (Just like when you removed the cable to start the job. Very stiff.) What you are showing is just the action of the small return spring on the cover. Great effort on the video, but this error should be edited.

    • @blurglide
      @blurglide  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah- I had to go fix that. The little geared bar (a rack) that pulls on the clutch wasn't properly engaged

  • @blurglide

    So, reportedly, that spring cushion washer should go on the other way. Hasn't caused any problems yet but I'm going to flip it around anyway.

      Everything worked fine the way I did it in the video, except that washer spring was backwards. That didn't seem to make a difference but I flipped it around anyway. Also, in the video, the little pull rack wasn't engaged to the clutch stack, so the lever pull won't be THAT light.

    • @blurglide

      I think the little geared rack that actually pulls on the outer pressure plate is not in properly. It probably got installed a bit crooked. In the video, when I can actuate the clutch down by the engine with one finger and comment on how much easier it is...that's what was happening. Take the cover plate back off and try again. Also make sure the little return spring on the external lever is put back, too.

      blurglide just pulled it back apart and it was installed fine. The problem with that piece is that it’s a magnet on the end, and I’m not sure if it’s just mine, but it’s a pretty weak magnet. So one little touch to it and it falls out of place super easily. Very frustrating and difficult to get the case cover back on. I wish the magnet was stronger, I wonder if ordering a new one will be stronger
