GREEN TOMATOES EASY WAY TO RIPEN - TIP IN DESCRIPTION BOX (OAG)

  • TIP TO RIPEN FASTER BELOW
    When the frost is coming, pick all the green tomatoes, even the small ones and bring them into the house. You can wrap them in newspaper or just leave them on the counter as I show in this video.
    They will ripen over the next few weeks and you can still be eating ripe tomatoes long after the growing season has ended.
    To speed up the ripening process, place a few tomatoes in a brown paper bag with an apple or a banana in the bag, close the bag and check it in a couple of days.

    I was taking a break from my Friday housecleaning and decided to check and see if you had a new video and sure enough you did. I enjoyed it and will be trying this next go round. I am already excited about spring planting time. I like your videos because they are straight to the point and you present the facts well. Now it's time for me to finishing my housecleaning and that's a fact. Have a great weekend.

    hi Alabama my father was when he was alive a landscape gardener he also had a small farm all kinds of animals . he had greenhouses for both flowers and of cause tomatoes alicanti shirley moneymaker aliesa craig among others now come the fall those that hadn't ripened he put into a wooden seedtray cover with news paper then he would add a ripe banana it worked very quick or mom made marmalade from some of them hope you are well enjoy all your videos thanks Ed

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ed, that is a good way to save your late fall tomatoes. The banana gives of a gas that makes other vegetables ripen fasted, that is why you never want to store bananas and other vegetables together. Where are you located?

    I just found your video which should help me in the next few weeks. THANKS!!! I am from East Coast Canada, and we already had a frost last week, but I managed to cover them and they came out unspoiled. Today, I'm debating if I should all bring them indoor or not. So I'm wondering, is the taste that different between letting them ripe indoor vs. on the vine? Thanks Mr. OAG!

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sophie: First welcome to my videos. As for taste of tomatoes ripened off the vine, here is what I have found to be the case. If the tomato is not matured to the stage where the blossom end is turning white, the taste may be affected. So, what this means is: The larger and more mature (beginning to turn white or showing a star shape on the bottom blossom end) the green tomato is, the better the taste will be when it ripens. I hope this helps, if I did not answer your question sufficiently, please ask me again. I would wait until I knew for sure a frost was coming before I picked all the green tomatoes.

    My Dad roll green tomatoes in brown paper and put them in our breeze way they were good for sixties day. If your tomatoes were white they would not lasted as long as green one. The trick in keep your tomatoes in a dark cool room. Remember safety is number one on your Homestead. Happy Christmas y'all. Here in South bend Indiana its is 11out side with three inches of new snow ( bad word ).

    Hello from Dallas! Just found your channel. I am on your fourth video. I really like that you don't have annoying background music. Your directions are clear and your voice is soothing. My tomatoes quit producing flowers. Is it because we are getting 97, 98, 99 degrees of weather??

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Sue and welcome to my channel. I appreciate you for watching my videos. And, yes, I don't like annoying music either, I think it detracts from my message to you, so I don't use it. On tomatoes, I have always heard that when the temperatures get above 95 degrees, tomato blossoms don't set or stay on the vine (But I don't have any experiments to prove or disprove that). There is a product called: Blossom Set, which supposedly makes the blooms stay on the plant, but I have not tried it. Again, thank you for your encouraging words. I like to know where my TH-cam friends are located, so where do you live? Thanks for commenting.

    OAG, Do you ever pick some varieties of tomatoes when there not quiet ripe yet. Ive been doing that because if i leave them on the vine to fully ripen, they will develope deep cracks on top. So ill pick them when there red on bottom and orange to yellow on top. Or if its gonna rain real hard, ill pick the ones that are almost ready. If not, they will crack and i guess i have some kind of mental OCD, becuase i just hate when they crack in top. Anyway i live on the west side of Indianapolis, and i was just curious if you have pick tomatoes early to keep them from cracking. Not all varieties do that of coarse. But most the bigger fruit tomatoe plant do. Thank for your videos. Im gonna subscribe and watch many more. Happy growing my friend. Dwayne

      Put them on a sunny window sill, that usually takes 2+ weeks. Or, place them in a box with other ripening fruit (apples, bananas, avocados, even other tomatoes), cover it, and they will ripen FAST.

      @@OldAlabamaGardener You are not answering the question sir.

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jtjjbannie When I am asked to give an answer, and I am not given much information (as in this original question: "I brought couple inside and they still green. It is almost 2 weeks now. What I'm missing?", it leaves much unknown for me to guess at. As I said, it depends on how green or how small the tomato they are trying to ripen. If it is a small tomato and I tell them to put it in a paper bag, it will probably rot before it turns color. The same if it is put in a drawer. Without me seeing the tomato I can't give specific instruction on exactly what to do. So, I feel I did answer the question, as best I could with so much unknown about their tomatoes. However, it will take a good candidate tomato about two months, not two weeks, to ripen enough to eat.

      Carlota, sorry, I didn't understand that you were asking me. I usually leave them on the counter in the kitchen. I probably would not put them in a sunny window, but it may not make any difference. I have ripened even small green tomatoes, it takes a few weeks but eventually they will ripen. This is something I do when we are going to have a frost in the fall and I am sure it will kill my tomato plants, so, I pick all the green ones and bring them in the house.

    I see Fried Green Tomatoes and Green Tomato Pie :)))) If yours taste good why do you think people are always saying tomatoes in the store have no flavor because they are picked green? I always wondered about that cause when I ripen them in the house I sure can't tell the difference. We are getting pretty cold over here, how bout you? Lights are on the house and the tree is going up now, I just love decorating for Christ's birthday :))))

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Melody, *The people who say "they have no flavor because they are picked green" don't know what they are talking about*. The reason the tomatoes in the store don't have a good taste or flavor is because the store tomatoes are a hybrid breed tomato, specifically to hold up in shipping and long life on the store shelves. But not bred for flavor. The breeder's goal was to produce a tomato that ripened all at the same time, didn't get mushy in transit and would sit on the shelve for a long time with out getting rotten. And they achieved that with the tomatoes most people buy at the stores. Thanks for bringing that thought up.

      Good for you Melody, you have a wood cook stove. There is nothing like a wood cook stove for creating a warm atmosphere in the house. When I was young boy we would sit by the cook stove, in the dark (we didn't have electricity), it kept us warm and with all the family close by it felt secure. That was in many ways, the good ole days. I hope you and family are well, take care!.
