    Thank you! Just out in my garden and saw a broken plant with 3 near perfect green 'maters. One might have blossom end rot, but I will try your tips.
    Thanks again!

      Add calcium next time to your soil for the blossom end rot :) rectifies it in no time! You can use ground eggshells also, but that takes a few months for it to get into the soil... do that in winter for your tomato planting areas. ☺️

    I have seen another TH-camr do an experiment with green tomato ripening with banana's vs apples vs just tomatoes all in paper bags and one bowl left in the light the bowl in the light was by far the fastest method wasn't even close I personally think they prefer to be in light that's how I'm doing it this year might save a few to experiment with for my own reference.

    Thanks for the tip Allen. I have always kept my apples in the fridge with my other produce and now I know that I shouldn't do that unless I want rotten vegetables.

    I've never had success with the newspaper wrap so..this time I used the apple method, in a box, without paper wrap, covered top with a towel, they've done Great. Oh yes, also in single layer. I've wrapped little ones in a towel with an apple, loose fold towel, like a sling...they do very well. Kept them upstairs in our warm kitchen, didn't have a large amount. Also...in years past, I used the green tomatoes to make relish...it's excellent and tastes as good as any cucumbers.

    Try pickled tomatoes; take all those green tomatoes, wash them, put them in a large glass jar mixed with carrots, cauliflower, mustard seed, sliced garlic, horseradish. make a salty solution of 2 tbl of canning salt to 1 l of water. boil the solution, let it cool and pour it over the tomatoes. seal the next day to make sure everything is covered. amazing in a month or so.

    I pulled up my large tomato plants that were green (had freeze). Put the plants in a bucket with now dirt. I stopped watering. I also stripped the plants and left only large green tomatoes. I put them in my new greenhouse and they ripened in three weeks. I have pics if interested.

    The same works for avocados. I always wrap them in newspaper and put them in a dark place to ripen them faster.

    Haha. "See the movie"! 'Fried Green Tomatoes', the movie that is... cult classic. I was looking for a site to get tomatoes on the vine to ripen faster. They do seem to take so long. Guess that's why they're soooo good. Need to be patient, I guess.

    Short of long...wrap the thing in paper & place in box in cool dark place (55-70F)...dependent on ethylene gas to ripen off the vine.

    salsa verde is made with tomatillos, not green tomatoes

    • @nolawest5183
      @nolawest5183 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup! It's a green fruit, small that looks like a tomato, but it has an outer sleeve it grows with, & it's leaves & the "Toma - tillos" [silent "L"] are rather sticky. I remembering back to a greener time in my life... but Chris, you are spot on!
      Thanks!

      Chopin1397 My beautiful Latina wife will have me pick green tomatoes to make wonderful salsa verde. She also makes from tomatillos (store bought). I agree with Chopin 1397 and not the self appointed green sauce police

      Yeah they do... i've got loads of green tomatoes that are starting 2 ripen and there been off vine for 2 months... Bananas release Ethylene gas that encourages them to ripen quicker!
