Let's say Grisha didn't want to kill the the royal family in the first place but if eren didn't even exist in that time meaning there's no future of him at all then how is it possible all of it the manipulating and stuff?

The manipulating is possible because Eren got the founding titan, and Eren got the founding titan because of the manipulating.
Does it make sense if the timeline can change? No. Does it make sense if the timeline is static, and deterministic? Yes, *that* future is the one this world gets, no other future, and it's the future that allows it to work

This all feels like a time loop where Eren is stuck in paths repeating his life until he gets the outcome he desires. Because, there had to be a timeline where he reaches the paths to be able to influence the next loop past to his liking. He probably got to paths in one timeloop and failed in his plan so he started all over again from the beginning but this time he was the director of his life. I really like the theory that Eren dream from first episode weren't future memories shown to him but instead it was the end of previous timeloop, and him waking up is the start of another one. Because he couldn't influence the past if he didn't got there on his own in the first place.

@@TElias5 there's only one timeline but it can be rewritten apparently. Otherwise why introduce the mechanic of Eren influencing Grisha and Dina's titan? So in that way, there SHOULD be a first version of the timeline where Eren SOMEHOW gets the Attack titan without Grisha, who would've died because he didn't want to kill the Reiss children, and wouldn't have been able to give Eren the Founding and Attack titans. From there Eren would have to influence his father to actually kill the Reiss and give him both powers exactly where and when he did in this series.

Imagine being able to know everything that happened and everything that will happen in the future. As creatures that experience time in a linear way, not knowing the future means we're free to create whatever future we want... at least from our perspective. From the perspective of a god like figure who has all the knowledge, we wouldn't *really* have free will.
I don't think Eren manipulated everything to happen in his favor, rather.... once he started to see the past and future, he himself lost all agency. He did what he was always meant to do to assure the events play out the very specific way that they needed to.
The theme the show/manga is hitting on is freedom. Eren is a zealot of freedom, but ironically by knowing everything in the past present and future, he's a slave to time itself. The second he touches Historia, Eren loses all agency.

You just put it brilliantly, bravo. This manga is like a comentary on freedom, free will and so on. Not so much about the killing of titans. I, myself, was drunk on that narrative "the titans are the enemy" all the while having "who is the real enemy" on the back of my head. None of that mattered. That was not the point of the story. I believe that's why there's no real explanation to what is exatcly the power of the titans because, ultimatley, it doesn't matter. What it really means to be free is what matters. Not to over romanticize - in the end Eren, Ymir whoever we want to believe did it - brought down the walls, thus symbolizing freedom.

    • @nahh7329
      @nahh7329 ปีที่แล้ว +8

People really love the narrative that Eren was a selfish, evil tyrannical villain all along but I think it's the opposite. Eren was devastated by what he had to do, but he knew he had to do it. There were no alternatives that allowed Eldians to live in peace. In the moment that they had done everything they possibly could to obtain safety and peace for Paradis, and the Council stated that they'd still never truly trust Eldians, he knew he had no other choice if his people were to survive and know peace.
I believe that he tried every alternative, considered every possibility, and did everything he possibly could to prevent this from happening, but he eventually accepted that it was inevitable. I think he didn't "lose all agency." One could say that Ymir was the master manipulator or that Eren was a slave to time and fate but the truth is, there was an alternative to this end, and that was to allow Eldians to be eradicated. And that was the one choice that they had, and he chose to protect his people. In that, I believe he did have the ultimate freedom/agency, more than anyone else did, because only he could decide to follow this path to protect his people.

The more I think about it, I completely disagree that all attack titans strove for freedom because of Eren. I think each of the 9 titans represent a piece of Ymir, either physically, or in the case of the attack titan, it represents Ymir’s subconscious yearning for freedom. Eren even says it to Ymir herself, “you led me here, didn’t you?” Ymir was the reason all attack titans went “against the self righteousness of the king.” It was HER desire. But just her desire, no Machiavellian plotting.
As for how Eren uses it on his immediate predecessors, I would agree with at least a few before Kruger, but there are too many variables over 2000 years for him to have been manipulating it ALL, he most likely started with whoever got the attack titan into Marley. And Hell, that could’ve happened even after the walls came up, maybe even 1 or 2 titans before Kruger.
I dunno, I just don’t think it’s actually necessary for Eren to have controlled everything from the start, only those who were immediately necessary to get the attack titan to him. I mean, hell over 2000 years there have been around 150 different attack titans, assuming they all lasted 13 years. That’s a lot of titans not really doing a whole lot for his goal.

Just a tiny clarification. Zeke and Eren are using the power of the Founding Titan to go back into Grisha's Memories from the past. Not the Attack Titan's ability to send it's memories back into the past. Basically Founding Titan can see the past, Attack Titan can see bits of it's future from the next holder. Eren can't actually see anything from the Attack Titan as he is the last holder he can only send his memories back into the past to his father and other holders of the titan (such as Eren Kruger mentioning saving Armin and Mikasa.)

@BlueBoy I think it’s rather that, Eren IS the attack titan, and he is the one with the ability to send certain memories to his predecessors. No holder of the attack titan who wasn’t Eren couldn’t send past memories at all, meaning that they were basically just there to return it to the original and true holder of the attack titan, Eren. That’s why he only sent bits and pieces, and not the full picture in order to give them hope whilst manipulating them into thinking they were fighting for something justifiable.

It's funny that the Attack Titan's powers let you look into the memories of future successors... but by using it in the timeless space of the Paths, time has no meaning, so you'd be able to look at the First as the Last and Last as the First and all things inbetween. Gotta have a pretty open mind to go "Oh, I see. To ensure this even happens 45 years ago, I have to plant this instruction 100 years ago, which I'm doing now in the 'present', which I got from the idea of someone 200 years ago, who I ALSO planted the thought into so that they could give me that thought so I'm in this spot doing it. Thats why he is so depressed and conflicted. How he cries out loud on Ramzi, how he cries about not wanting Mikasa to forget about him and how he doesn't want to die. I think you underplayed how the Paths dimension's time works - I don't remember exactly what he said, but Zeke mentions (or implies) that he was there either 100's or 1,000's of years before Eren wakes up. They then relive Eren's entire life through memories, implying they spent at least about 20 years- if not more from possibly repeating some memories - just trying to get Eren on Zeke's side. We can assume easily that they were both in that realm for at least a century or more within literally a single tiny fraction of a second in the real world. Crazy.

Though the fact Eren likely knew that he was gonna be shot like that- but likely didn't know the exact precise series of events that'd lead to the exact moment to be able to avoid it- I think thats one of the reasons he was in such shock in season 3 ending there he saw most things that'd happen past present and future including sasha and himself getting shot/ head wiped clean off, so I mean he knows his human life is about to end and he's gonna essentially be stuck as as head in titan founding life support so no wonder he's so full of despair from then on out, I mean dudes barely 19 years old and his human life is gone forever I dont even think the founding titan power can heal his body thats basically it, but he still has the confidence and will to flex that hard in the paths dimension knowing in the real world he's beyond screwed and essentially dead thats pretty insane

OKAY, but hear me out... Eren can rewrite Eldians throughout time both mentally (change their memories) and physically (euthanize them). Correct? If his knowledge and ability to manipulate the past attack titans and Eldians was so perfect to the point where he is the crux of all attack titan's powers (they can't read the future, they were just sent memories from the future from Eren).... WHY IS THIS HIS PLAN!? Couldn't he rewrite Ymir herself the instant she got her powers? This might be a conflict of power between 2 founding titans, but then couldn't he rewrite all Eldians to not turn into titans? Did Ymir construct this all to happen while feigning everything as Eren's ideas? Eren seems to be WAY too smart to allow that to happen, there definitely could have been a better plan to achieve freedom. The only way this all was allowed to come to pass is if everything HAS to be a perfect time loop stemming from the path realm. Which means the past 2000 years had to occur naturally without manipulation but also through the will of Ymir and Eren's manipulation simultaneously. Eren wouldn't allow any of this to happen unless it HAS to happen this way. But if everything is a perfect time loop, how did Ymir not realize she wasn't a slave to the Royals the second she got her titan powers until Eren told her in the path realm? Maybe Eren just sucks at planning after all

If he was, and (taking a steins gate approach) certain world events needed to happen at time converges, then that makes sense. But I disagree about your last point about ymir. The whole thing with her and Mikasa was to highlight the Stockholm syndrome ymir had. Her king was the first to value her, and her purpose was to serve him. She continued to do so for 2,000 years until she gained the confidence to break the cycle when she saw Mikasa gain the strength to kill the love of her life.

Like you can see Post credits, even though there were no Titans anymore, there always gonna be wars, like all of AoT didn't mean anything for the whole history of the world. I think Eren's knew that from the moment he knew the truth about the outside world and his goal was for his friends to see the truth and be able to live a "happy" live until they die of old age. He wanted to be stopped by them, otherwise he could have just stopped them from it, because of the powers of the founding titan.

for people wondering why eren didn’t change things sooner in history, first off he had to still work within the confines of him being born and existing in a way where he reaches the point of obtaining the founding titan power, and then from there his only goal was to give mikasa and armin a good life. there has to be a little bit of suspension of disbelief here because surely with the ability to influence all eldians he probably could’ve created a better outcome where all three of them could live and there be less bloodshed but isayama talked about how eren being trapped by this future reflected his own feeling of a lack of freedom having already decided the ending of the manga and staying on that path regardless of his power to change it and the pressure of what his decisions would mean after the series took off to such heights, which i think is really cool!

Great video but you missed a step, Eren didn't create the predeterminism loop of previous attack titans. He was just the last piece in a long line of unchangeable events. If anyone was capable of planning it out it would've been Ymir, the first piece in the long long line of dominos. If Eren was capable of changing the past, rather than performing his intended/accidental role, he could have easily made one tiny misstep causing himself (and any plans he had accumulated up to that point) to fall apart and never have existed. And Eren's never been considered one of the smartest characters, he would've failed at least once over a 2,000 year plan.

You have to remember that time doesn't exist for Eren once he had the full founding titan's powers. He can do something and immediately see what the result would be, changing it before it could even happen again as time happens both all at once and not at all. Truly is a paradox!

@@nex7465 Being omnipresent wouldn't automatically grant omniscience (which he couldn't of been, technically he could only alter/interact with Ymir descendants), those are two distinct things. It's also consistently shown as a singular timeline, which would require him to be bound to predeterminist rules. Nothing he can change in his past could (significantly) change his present state, or he wouldn't of been in the situation to make those changes and it wouldn't of happened. Super easy to create paradoxes with time travel, that's why most creators are lazy and just go with multiverses where they could attempt an infinite amount of different approaches (Future Diary comes to mind). Predeterminism is one of those philosophical concepts that require A LOT of work to pull off, so most don't even attempt, it has a lot of baggage.
Plus, he's still just a mortal teenager (even with a potentially near infinite amount of time/experience) with average intelligence. He'd go insane trying to even keep track of his attempts and results, every failure compounding and causing other mistakes etc. If you can even call him himself after he got the memories from touching royal bloods, subjects of Ymir are all slaves in one way or another.

@@LolDongs69 Eren IS in a predetermined loop. The Attack Titan isn’t the one who has the ability to see the future. EREN, owning the founding Titan and with the help of Zeke, was able to go back into the Paths. There isn’t a “start” of the loop because circles have no beginning point, it is a paradox. That is why Eren is so fixated on freedom, it’s why he says at the end of the 3rd season he says “When I kill all my enemies across the sea, will we finally be free?” Because he knows he is going to literally kill everyone (or at least try) with the rumbling, but he doesn’t know if he will be out of the loop after that. Because Eren has never free, his future actions affected his past, which in turn determines his present. He knows he can’t change what’s meant to happen because it’s ALREADY happened! Hardly. Him doing what he did is not necessarily down to smarts because if he took a route that resulted in failure he'd still have the ability to go back and change it or foresee it and take a different path. It's not due to proper planning and incredible ability to manipulate but rather due to trial and error and in a sense having almost infinite power. If he was the smartest he'd figure out a way to fix everything without so much death and tragedy. Why not eliminate the ability of eldians to become titans, similar to Zeke's plan but still leaves the option to live and have a family, and would be able to see the future and make necessary changes in the past to maximise on lives saved and possible peace, or even save everyone by giving his past self the knowledge he now possesses.

And this whole time, Eren had to at first live through his life in ignorance, only to manipulate it later on, in only to “complete the loop.”
I think it’s fair to say that the Attack Titan is the one who’s manipulating the users, and Eren just happens to be the last one down the line.

I disagree with Sid somewhat, Eren could've changed some things about the past, changing some things to his liking, but there's an original timeline where he got the attack titan without altering things at all. So, Grisha always would've had Eren, and would've always have found a way to give him the attack titan, or they'd be a time paradox. Perhaps that original timeline is what made Eren change things to begin with.
