I met Ira Hayes when I was 12 years in December, 1954. I was living in Essex, CA (pop. 20) which is located 40 miles west of Needles, on Route 66. My father worked for the California Highways. My father was drinking at the bar when Ira Hayes came in. People started crowding around him and calling him a hero. My father rushed home to get me and my siblings to meet Ira. He said this is a once in a life-time experience and you will never have this chance again (how prophetic). When we approached him and my father said he wanted his kids to meet him,. His back was to us. He slowly turned on his stool and offered his hand. He did not say anything. I will never forget his face and eyes. He was obviously drunk but the pain and sorrow in his eyes was overwhelming and has haunted me all my life. He was uncomfortable with all the attention and I felt ashamed in intruding upon him and, somehow I knew he would not live very long, but I felt so fortunate to have met him. When my father came home, one day in January (one month later) and informed us that Ira has died from alcohol poisoning, I cried so hard and still do when I read or watch a movie about him.

As a youth, my father met Ira Hayes. He apparently worked on and off for my g-grandfather. He was described as hard working very nice guy. Unfortunately, war and lack of treatments for U.S. veterans lacked back then as (to a point) they still lack today. Although, he may of had a drinking problem... It was not whom he was. He deserves respect, love and honor. I'm to have words (a family oath of sorts) with anyone desrespecting Ira Hayes or any other war hero. Thank you for your service. All branches past and present.

This song was not written by Johnny Cash. It was written by Native Indian: Peter La Farge who recorded his own version and was friends with Johnny in the West village folk music scene and Cash and LaFarge were also alcohol, drug pals. If it weren't for Johnny recording the song, in 1964--it would be unknown, for though Peter recorded it, Johnny was the one with distribution. Peter died in 1965, a drug overdose/stroke, sadly, Thorazine, sleeping pills, provided by--Johnny Cash is what did Peter in. Peter was 34.

He later served in our Police Department, making Chief, then after retirement, went on to serve 20 more years in Department of Labor.
He told stories of Ira Hayes. He was good friends with him. They went on liberties together and shared rides to leaves together. He always talked about Ira as a very great man! We had the alblum 'Bitter Tears' by Johnny Cash. I played it over and over, for myself and my children. This song bothered me, as did the rest of the songs. I am Canadian, but the things done to the natives of North America in both Canada and the U. S. cannot be undone. But we should remember their sufferings and trials with shame, even though perpetrated by the governments of the day. I truly respect Native peoples who were so badly disrespected. Who, but they, knew what was going on?
    Yes, the feds did.
Thank you J. C. for the wake up call, although too late for the truly oppressed.

Unfortunately Ira was one of many from that war who killed himself with booze when they got home. A long slow suicide. My father in law was another, it took him just over 25 yrs. to kill himself with brandy. He saw the worst of what Europe had to offer, and never received the five medals he was decorated with, they went to his widow and six kids. These men drank themselves to death trying to forget what they saw. And never talked about it.

One of the big reasons I like Johnny Cash, even though he died when I was 2 or 3, is that he always spoke out for those who didn’t have a voice and deserved one. Prisoners whose conditions were horrid, soldiers fighting for a government that didn’t care about them, and Native Americans. Unfortunately, he never really brought up the plight of African Americans despite being at the height of his popularity during the civil rights movement. That’s definitely understandable though as his audience was primarily white southerners, so it basically would have been career suicide to pick a side in the movement. Great song and sung by a great storyteller.

Thats cuz during the civil rights movement people were already singing for the rights of African Americans. Were they marginalized and had a relatively smaller voice? Yeah but it was slowly growing and becoming more powerful. But prisoners and Natives and soldiers? They were just forgotten. He was the only voice they had before Johnny

The ballad of one Marine yet the tale of most soldiers... the fame is honored albeit any soldier could do it, no man really wants it till he has it, you'll get the story from most boys (not really men but literal teenagers/children really) the military was great and all, but the ones that fight over seas, THE ONES THAT FIGHT OVER SEAS... well those are the ones that truly understand what this song is about... Ive been in the Army for 4 years as of now 3 of those years Ive been more drunk than sober if you enlist, just recognize this may quite be your life.. 4 more years to go

My former husband served in nam. Was a bad war. I shall not reiterate The. Reprocussions of this. U would not believe it. Was hard! All i can say is. U ain't lived it til u been thru it. So i do not want to hear no. Excuses from those who are not proud to serve America. I would have! Nobody would sign my papers so that i could. I was so proud to be an American. Just wasn't old enough to sign my own papers. I asked my dad to sign for me?. He said he couldn't. He did not have custody of me. Wasn't gonna ask my sorry mom to do it. She already kicked me out. Best thing she ever did in my life. She a joke. I made it!! I worked 2 jobs. And sent her $ to take care if my siblings. , and my step dad. He had. T.b. he always said he had tired butt. He evidently acquired it overseas in the war. He was a good man. Never a bad word to me. He was my daddy's brother. Raised us kids like his own. He had other kids. Grandad raised them. See he was married before. Had 4 by a previous marriage.
