By the time I got a majority of my house done, I was tired of my accent color. How do I go about cheaply/easily changing it without doing an entire overhaul of my house?

I especially loved that you mentioned using the same style and color palette throughout. If you keep this uppermost in your mind, any home can look lovely. It doesn’t get boring as some might think, either, because there are so many choices you can make within your desired style. Your style might be eclectic, with a blend of traditional and modern, but if you do that across all rooms, you are winning. You can play with it, selling some things so you can buy others, slowly working toward that balance throughout.

I'm liking the color palate idea/notion. Excellent information. It can get overwhelming in stores but sticking to your color palate eliminates a-lot of unusable items and makes much easier purchasing decisions.

I totally agree about staying within a color palette in your home, otherwise it certainly would be choppy, confusing, and with a whole lot of lotta going on. As for lighting, they say that softer lighting can also take years off you - fading wrinkles. Thank you for your great videos! It's always such a pleasure hearing from you!💐

I love this in theory, but I study history, the things I collect are from different eras and regions, so I’ve decided to create areas within my home that reflect my favourite periods: Baroque, Edwardian, post war French farmhouse, a little bit of vintage cutesy (think mint and chrome toaster), and there is an element of a rustic, weary traveller in there. It’s very eclectic and I’m struggling to keep every room of my home the same colour because it’s very much like a museum now full of interesting things and furnishings I’ve acquired over the years from some equally interesting people. Because the items are significantly older than most peoples homes they have even more interesting stories which I thoroughly enjoy researching. I’ve joked that when I go for a job as a museum curator:guide I will use my home as part of my resume 😅 As a result my home feels like it’s never finished, but I’m sort of okay with that. Now the problem is trying to incorporate my husbands darker MCM decor, and my mum’s insistance on her guest bedroom in the house being Japanese minimalist. I swear I need another house 😂

*Color Palette* . I have a semi-open concept living room, dining room and kitchen. Sticking with a cohesive color scheme has been game changing. I like to mix the concentration between spaces using a ratio like 80:50:20 or a similar combination. Repetition is also crucial. I used copper as a metallic accent in my fall styling. I find it very pleasing to the eye to see a bit sprinkled around in the vignettes I created.

Thank you so much for the photo wall advice. Also for the lighting. I love the soft light but I find it too dark for my kitchen. I tried something new today. I just installed a new light fixture yesterday with 4 bulbs. I kept going back and forth on the lighting and decided to put 2 day and 2 soft. Omg... PERFECT. The room looks bright enough but still feels cozy.

Thank you for explaining this so clearly. I just found your channel through your "10 Interior Design Styles Explained" video and I immediately subscribed. My home needs so much help!! I really enjoy your channel Kristen. I have always been interested in interior design, and focused on making my home appealing yet cozy. My style is a combination of boho and farmhouse, with some Japanese and Scandinavian elements mixed in. Might sound non-cohesive, but these different design styles really blend well and compliment one another if you choose your pieces carefully. I love your tips, and have incorporated many of your suggestions. We actually seem to think a lot alike, and many of your ideas are things that I've always done instinctively. I really think you're one of the best interior designers out there, and that you have a natural knack for your craft 🙂

I probably have too many color themes and the kids just coordinate with the characters they want in their bedroom but I’m fine with that. I find it a little refreshing to have a neutral entry and turquoise and brown and red orange in my living room and purple in my kitchen and red and black in my bedroom. Each room is used differently so why not have a different feel? I guess this is a level of design I’m not quite gonna hit😂

Each room can be individual and still look really nice.

So much good information for decorating in one video! Having the flooring be consistent throughout the home is very good advice. Too many homes look choppy because each room has different flooring. A home looks more cohesive if you stick to one flooring, or maybe two if there is a door. Never knew that was a rule before but it makes a lot of sense.

  • @jenniferlynn3537

A paint color expert pointed out that the importance of maintaining consistent tonality throughout the home to achieve “flow” - even if you enjoy using different colors throughout the house. So if you’re using a clear yellow in the entry, using mauve or grey in the adjacent room would look odd. In that case an apple green would work better. Dusty/muted colors should stay with one another, jewel tones, too.
As for me, I think unifying a home with one color palette is boring. However, I do believe in the importance of carrying one or two colors from one room to the next. So if the living room is pink/green/lavender, the dining room can be green/pink/gold - and the kitchen gold/green. Green unifies the rooms on the main floor - but a different color takes the lead in each.

My color pallet in my condo (front area) are walls painted in a honey neutral wall paint with white trim with a soft teal as accent. The guest bedroom and bathroom (back area) are painted in a sky blue with white trim and with an area rug in the blue/white/honey/tan colors. This is the public area and is contemporary in look. Our primary bedroom is also painted in the light honey colored paint with white trim-and a solid gold/tan area rug. I have a medium wood laminate throughout the entire condo except for the white tile flooring in kitchen and guest bathroom. The ensuite is in the back of the condo and guests do not see this and the colors are soft browns tans/and a muted teal/gray tiles against dark cabinet and with white double sink. All the handles and pulls throughout are a sterling silver tone and all the doors are painted white like the trim.

Kristin, I see that you use Etsy to download prints and I love that idea. Every time I have used Etsy, it seems that my credit card gets hacked and I need to cancel the CC and send for a new one. Have you had this issue, and if not, how do you pay for your Etsy items? I would love for all to weigh in because I really want to use this design hack!

Excellent advise!! My sentiments exactly!! It drives me crazy when I walk into a house and there’s 15 different colors on the walls… It makes me a nervous wreck! And it also makes me crazy when people have 15 million junk objects… somebody has to clean around all that nonsense 😂🤣😂🙄😉
