I'd keep the the first part the original beautiful dark brown bannister and paint the rest white, because you have three different tones of wood going on, which makes it look like they've been updated at different times.
Can you stain the spindles to match the bannister? I think it’d be gorgeous if they were both the darker stain. Nice contrast with the white stairs as well!
Yep, I agree. It's beautiful and there's less up keep as if you paint it white it will get dirty and you'll find you have to paint it every couple of years...especially if you have kiddies :)
I would get someone to sand it properly and then stain the bannister a lighter stain so it’s not such an dark stain. So it’s more of a light feel but still a lovely wooden contrast and natural material in your house.
For the staircase, I wouldn’t paint it white, but the current ‘wash’ is so so dark. Maybe a more neutral wood would (haha no pun) compliment a neutral runner. ✨ beautiful either way!
This is what I was thinking! Just the tone that clashes with the more honey toned floor boards. White spindles and a more muted wash on the bannister would look lovely.
I love the charm of this home. i love that it's not fully open concept like most homes these days and still has beautiful doors and separate rooms! lovely.
Video Idea: Anna and Mark discuss their favourite cleaning gadgets. The behind the radiator thing is game changing. ❤️ (Also, sorry but I l agree with Mark about the natural wood, too much white makes it look like a clean room in a laboratory).
I love how practical and patient Anna and Mark are with their reno projects. Just so thoughtful and well executed, I just know the outcome is going to be gorgeous. Congratulations ❤️
If it was up to me I would definitely switch between the front living room to the office. Then open up the one wall part to the kitchen making an open flow between the kitchen and the living area (where now there is the kitchen sink and you planning on doing utility) while keeping the office separated and quite. Also you’ll have garden exit straight from the living room (and can place the tv one side of the the fireplace and the other side will be a custom books) how great is that?
What a lovely, joy filled video. Half shutters AND light gauzy curtains. Bannister left but maybe struts painted white. Good luck with everything and again congratulations to you both ♥️
My parent's house has a similar layout but we have always called the office room the study, I think it has a more relaxed homely vibe than office. It is where bookshelves and instruments are as well as a desk and a sofa, and was the room for quiet and concentration whereas the front room was for TV and socialising. The perfect combo you are so lucky!
My two pence worth 🤣and having lived in Brighton for 20 years in a similar home ..... Half shutters in the front room, it allows for privacy whilst also providing lots of light (people walking past love to have a nosey!) In respect of the bannister, white painted staves with a natural wooden hand rail and head post is a classical, lovely look.
I’m so excited! Just a word on your ‘utility’ room. Here in Australia, it is standard to have a full laundry room with double sinks, windows, door leading outside, and when we renovated ours, we had built in cupboards fitted in the entire room. It’s actually really nice, done in the same black and white tile colour scheme as the bathrooms, with subway wall tiling to the ceiling.
I love the house. I agree with Mark on the bannisters, leave them natural. It contrasts nicely against the white walls and the stair rug colours. Your kitchen looks so good.
Cupboard under the stairs is great for football boots, rucksacks, scooters and stuff when/if there are kids in the house. It might be worth keeping it, for handy "shut the door, then ignore" storage 😊
The house is absolutely gorgeous. My husband and I are currently in the process of looking for a home (we have been looking for over a year) and based on all of the houses we have seen, your is really special. Enjoy the journey.
Love the cupboard under the stairs! My parents turned out one into a den for my sister and me, lick of paint, second hand Sega, glow in the dark stars and some beanbags - hours of fun!
The house has so many lovely original details, it's cool that you want to keep them. I noticed that you have very few or no rugs, but I guess it's because you're doing the windows? I think rugs in the living room and office will make the rooms feel so much cozier. Have a nice Sunday, Anna!
My gran had shutters in her bedroom growing up that accordioned (is that a word?) open. They would meet in the middle and latch. She could open the latch and fold the shutters away when she wanted more light in, then close them back at night. That’s a nice way to have them because you can have all the privacy you want, then throw them open and enjoy the sunshine.
The place is stunning! Congratulations to you both. It’s so clear to see how happy it makes you, and how much love you’ve already put in, even if it’s mainly of the “planning” variety so far. You’ve found your spot, and that’s just wonderful to see. Wishing you both many happy years of memory making there. Thanks for sharing it.
Great buy! Agree with Mark on the stairs. Keep the beautiful post dark, with white spindles. Classic! Window shutters: how about painting them a dramatic color? Could look really cool.
What a lovely lower ground floor you have! The original features are beautiful. The coving in the hallway frames the ceiling beautifully, and I couldn't help imagining a modern take of a painted decorative ceiling there. Re: shutters: depends on the orientation of the room. If the windows get midday/afternoon sun, the shutters will most likely help regulate the inside temperature better than curtains (the closer to the exterior the cutoff is, the less heat gets in). In that orientation it would definitely be best to keep them in their entirety (especially up top). If the windows face north/east, keeping only the lower part might be a good balance for privacy/more light inside.
Hi Anna, Your house is lovely! I suggest sanding and re-staining the banister to the color or the floors and spindles. White won't show the beautiful detail, and the original stain is too dark, I think. Also, as a suggestion, perhaps move the book case and apothecary chest away from the fireplaces. They give the rooms an uneven look and might look nice on another wall leaving the fireplaces central.
I agree with what many have already commented - keep the natrual wood and get rid of the shutters! Such a wonderful house, I love the fact that the office room has a door to the garden, what a dream during the warmer months!
Keep the staircase the stained wood. The fireplace mantel and surround in the green-gray room - future snug - looks original and it's uniquely beautiful, so you should keep it! Lovely home! Congrats!
When you put your tv tucked in with he bookshelf area, you could also put a swing arm On it. So can come out when in use but then tick back away when not. Would allow you more flexibility with furniture placement etc.
Love the energy in this! So nice to see that you actually keep the house in mind when planning and redecorating it has so many stunning and unique features. Also in terms of small kitchen appliances we got inspired by the pull-out shelves korean apartments have to house a rice cooker. Super accessible, easy to use and still stores away any appliances that aren't SMEG haha
For the windows, a half shutter would be beautiful. You'll get more light, show off your windows and still maintain the beauty of those shutters. Stairs - if painted white you'd lose the visibility of the features. Perhaps you could consider sanding the wood bank to lighten it up a little, so it's more neutral but still showcases those features. Stunning home, very much my style also!!
We have the same shutters, full length but we always keep the top tilted open. The sun streams into our front rooms in the morning so it's handy to have the flexibility to shut/partially mask the light as otherwise you're being blinded on the sofa!
Keep the fancy post and handrail wood but paint the spindles white. Keep the shutters and just enjoy the windows in the rest of the rooms. Cant wait to see all the changes you have planned, and so lovely to see you so happy in your new home! 😄
Gorgeous original features! Glad to hear you want to make the most out of the garden view from your kitchen. I see this a lot - utility rooms having the best views.. nonono 🤣 cannot wait to see the rest ❤️
Sheer curtains in the living room Original wood on the bannister Storage under the stairs is great but you could carve it out and make really cool book/ display shelves
Lovely house! For the fireplace in the office, you could go to reclamation yards and hunt down another Victorian marble fire surround like the one the living room if you like that style.
I would stain the banister to match the floor! it will better suit the white walls/stairs/future neutral runner. And I think you'll be able to see the beaut detailing better in a lighter wood stain!
I'm going to side with Mark. It will be so lovely to have the wood to contrast the white. The house is gorgeous and can't wait to see how it develops over time ❤️🏡
Shutters in the living room for sure, best thing for a big bay window. And I’d keep the banister dark but the spindles white, I’d probably paint the stairs and spindles in more of a warm off white to better complement the original wood colour!
Anna & Mark, thank you for 'sharing' your home and ideas with us :-) About the entrance area, just a thought, perhaps not use that for hanging jackets, if you have more than two people over in the winter, the space will very easily fill up with large jackets/coats and that's the first thing new arriving guests will 'walk in to' - perhaps use the area where you have the vacuum cleaner/brooms etc for jackets/coats and move all the utilities to the utility room when that's ready (all utilities in one place - I know you like to be organized) :-) About the staircase, although I love white, I'd keep the wood bannister if you want to keep it as a feature. About the living room windows/shutters, it's a dilemma - shutters do provide most privacy but are hard to clean and hide the windows. As the windows are new, I'd remove the the shutters for now (put them away somewhere) and try with curtains and see how you like it without - you might want to put them back on when the windows are not so new anymore :-D Love your thoughts on the changes you want to make for the kitchen/dining area - really look forward to see what you do with it :-)
Beautiful home - thanks for inviting us in! Whether you choose shutters or curtains, if you watch TV in that room I would have an option to cover the windows completely to minimize glare. Also consider moving the doorway cluster to the windows so you have a bigger wall opposite the couch for more flexibility with TV or furniture placement. We moved a room opening and it wasn’t a big deal.
Beautiful house!! I would go for half height shutters in the living room for privacy but maximum light and then hang some sheer curtains with that to soften the room. And I would personally paint the banisters black!
Thank you for allowing us inside your home! Such a special property. So love your overall approach to home ownership, renovation, etc. Lovely and refreshing. But sorry Anna, I'm with Mark on keeping the original wood on the banisters!
Beautiful house Anna! Congrats to you both. And that coving... Omg!! About the bay windows, they are indeed stunning, I would love to see nice bespoke curtains there, I bet they will look lovely.
We've painted our spindles white but kept the banister and the newel post in the original wood and I like the contrast of that. You've also got a much more ornate newel post than us so think it would stand out more in the wood, in a good way. If you were thinking of painting it all a dark colour then my opinion may change, love the look of an all dark staircase, banister and all!
Your house is amazing! I love houses that have character and original features, it makes a house so much more interesting! And such a exciting prospect for renovations. Congratulations ❤️
Anna your home is so beautiful. It’s modern and homely, and you’ve clearly put a lot of time in to make it look so nice. Your videos are the perfect thing to watch when on a work break to switch off and I’m grateful to you for providing such chilled content. You and Mark have the best vibes xx
I agree with Mark to, the spindles in white.... or stained to match the post/bannister. If you’ve got a more neutral runner then the post/bannister won’t ‘fight’ too much with it, he current runner is a bit busy so you miss the prettiness of it x
Favourite part of Sundays is definitely watching your videos, and l absolutely loved the ground floor tour! I love how you and Mark appreciate the history and original features of the house because it gives character to the ambiance. It is so refreshing as you go through the process of renovations. I agree with Mark but probably a more unified and lighter shade of wood both for the whole banister and staircase would look classic and modern at the same time, but also I think white could show more dust than a natural wood tone. The only thing I missed during this tour were the new windows reveal! You spoke so highly of them... :)
I lived in a similar house, so I’d definitely recommend half shutters (sheer curtains did not work for us) and a no on painting the banisters. Also, your space would be even more fab with some giant plants. Thanks for sharing.
Half shutters for sure! Show off those windows. The banister, I would do the spindles white and keep the rest dark, I think when you change the runner it will be a beautiful contrast and you’ll enjoy it/appreciate it differently.
Love your home Anna. I will like the half shutters along with sheer full curtains and the banister will look beautiful in its original wood colour. Painting it white will look too matchy matchy. Good luck for the future reno.
I love the idea of the half shutters in your living room. It will let the light it but also gives you some privacy. I would keep the wood but rub it back and re-stain it. 😍 I love your beautiful home.
I would paint the bannister, but not white! I'd also keep the shutters! We have gorgeous new windows too, but the plantations are timeless and so practical ❤️ Are you planning on painting the hallway a colour on the top half? I think that would look stunning and really make the stairs pop too rather than blend in Beautiful home! I wish we had more homes like this in Australia 🥰
Alternative idea for the banister, paint it black? That way all the lovely decorative details will be highlighted! But I would say painted banisters/handrails need a lot of upkeep as they get touched so so much , where as wood will always be easier to maintain!! Goodly k choosing haha xx
Lovely home with such unique, hard-to-find architectural elements including the colored glass doors- so cool! Paint the spindles white, but leave the banister and carved pillar- it stands out more and highlights its beauty. As for shutters- have you considered putting them back in the side windows and leaving the center window open?
Ooh for the living room I think half shutters, or curtains that ensure privacy and warmth in winter, you wanna be chic but also not visible to everyone in the evening! I would keep the stairs as they are or make it all one big storage space not two! Also that shelving in the utility space looks really useful and cool, could be an awesome feature
For that front living-room...instead of switching the door from swinging out, what about a sliding door? One those paneled doors that slide on a iron looking bar?
It’s a fab house anna .you have so much space.I would take down the shutters and have sheer white curtains.keep the bannister wood with white spindles.
Hi from New Zealand! What a lovely home, congrats to you and Mark. I’d paint the spindles white or a light colour and leave the newel post and bannister rail natural as they are. Agree with others too that half shutters or shutters you can open at half point would look great and let you still have lots of light but privacy. Some long curtains along with them could be really elegant and super cosy too, especially in winter. Also think understair powder room is really good option if it’s feasible. Looking forward to seeing it evolve!
Love love love your home!! And congrats, it already looks so liveable! How about a seat wrapped around the sitting room bay? You can get one made (with spare storage under) to fit that entire shape, with half-length shutters. Great extra seating if you entertain. Panel below the dado rail in the hall? Cosier and background architectural detail, even if you go modern. Banister in colour other than white? Pull-out under stair cupboards? So much easier/more accessible.
Is the office space bigger than the living room? Have you considered flipping the spaces? Or consider putting the TV in the office and setting it up as a TV room/office?
Gorgeous home 💜. We viewed a house on Saturday and fell in love, our solicitor has formally put in a note of interest and the estate agent called today to say it’s going to a closing. Wahhh. I’m so excited but so nervous too.
I would paint the spindles white and leave the banister and handrail dark. That would create really nice contrast, especially since you plan to replace the runner with something neutral! Beautiful staircase!
Natural wood for the bannister will bring warmth & harmonize with neutral carpet/other natural finishes like picture frames or entryway baskets! I'd try to match the spindles as well so the bannister doesn't look like it's floating. If the wood is looking too deep or muddy, lifting the stain & refinishing in something lighter could modernize it & make it feel fresh!
Totally agree with Mark on the bannister & newel post. The runner isn't doing that lovely wood any favours but once you replace it with something neutral, it will look beautiful
Excited to see what you guys do with this house. It’s so beautiful already. Would love to see you and Jamie Genevieve talk homes together now that you have both just moved into similar type properties
I agree with Mark on the staris. If everything is white the beautiful banister is almost hidden.
I'd keep the the first part the original beautiful dark brown bannister and paint the rest white, because you have three different tones of wood going on, which makes it look like they've been updated at different times.
I’d stain it black to make it more modern personally
@@katiecoble48 good idea!
I agree with Mark I would keep the natural wood sorry Anna.
No I’m with you! I think I’m coming round to the idea!

The term "vestibule" just makes me think of that Friends episode. "I'm trapped...in an ATM vestibule...with Jill...MMMDCRRRRR"
Yes😂😂 "put joey on"
Omg same haha!!!
Omg that’s hilarious 😂🤪
Yeeeees!! The title of this video should be: 'The one where the word vestibule is used after Friends'
Hahah same!!!! 😂
Defo keep cupboard under stairs, wait till you have kids and hockey sticks, rugby balls, multiple backpacks...😂😂😂.
I’m with mark on the staircase! Great house 🏡 congrats xx
The more I think about it, I think I am too 😂 With everything else painted white I think it will make a nice feature of it!
Bannister original wood, no paint! Floaty sheer white curtains in living room.
I love this idea!!! Second this
I love how practical and patient Anna and Mark are with their reno projects. Just so thoughtful and well executed, I just know the outcome is going to be gorgeous. Congratulations ❤️
Oh my gosh DO NOT paint that stunning bannister white!! Sacrilege! 😂
I know 😂😂 I think I’m coming round to Mark’s way of thinking! X
If it was up to me I would definitely switch between the front living room to the office. Exactly my first thought!
What a lovely, joy filled video. Half shutters AND light gauzy curtains. Bannister left but maybe struts painted white. Good luck with everything and again congratulations to you both ♥️
Thank you Jen! X
I would lighten the bannister but keep it a wood tone because in white it would blend in with the rest of the room and kind of lose its character
Love the sound of that!! X
Keep the shutters - they are lovely!
My two pence worth 🤣and having lived in Brighton for 20 years in a similar home ..... In respect of the bannister, white painted staves with a natural wooden hand rail and head post is a classical, lovely look.

Gorgeous home!🥰I love how it holds so much character! The colourful glass panels on the front door and kitchen door is lovely😍
Keep the original wood on the banisters! Everyone has all white these days and it's really rare to have a gorgeous original bannister!

It’s actually really nice, done in the same black and white tile colour scheme as the bathrooms, with subway wall tiling to the ceiling.
Your house is giving charmed the original tv shows from the 90s!!! Especially with the entrance door!!
Half shutters! There's something about having shutters in Brighton thats a beautiful must 😍
I love the house.
I think for the stairs you could both compromise, keep the hand rail and front spindle original and paint the others white x
That's what I was thinking too!
I was thinking the same thing!
The house is absolutely gorgeous. My husband and I are currently in the process of looking for a home (we have been looking for over a year) and based on all of the houses we have seen, your is really special. Enjoy the journey.

The house has so many lovely original details, it's cool that you want to keep them. I noticed that you have very few or no rugs, but I guess it's because you're doing the windows? I think rugs in the living room and office will make the rooms feel so much cozier. Have a nice Sunday, Anna!
Oh definitely going to get some rugs! Rugs are pricey though, so need to save up and will get them as we redecorate each room x

On it. So can come out when in use but then tick back away when not. Would allow you more flexibility with furniture placement etc.
The stars really aligned for you and Mark to have your new home.
I do agree with Mark on the banister, a touch of the original wood with all of the white is a nice contrast.
I agree with Mark as well. Keep it natural. I painted my staircase white and I regret it. Also that skirting board is gorgeous.
Love the energy in this! So nice to see that you actually keep the house in mind when planning and redecorating it has so many stunning and unique features. No shutters in the living room just curtains, it’ll make it a little be more chic and elevated :)
Agree!
@@alisonshaw7563 No!!! keep the shutters as they are, they are beautiful and classic. Shutters are even on trend in Australia right now.
I say half shutters and light linen curtains!
Gorgeous original features! Glad to hear you want to make the most out of the garden view from your kitchen. I see this a lot - utility rooms having the best views.. nonono 🤣 cannot wait to see the rest ❤️
Sheer curtains in the living room
Original wood on the bannister
Storage under the stairs is great but you could carve it out and make really cool book/ display shelves

I'm with Mark. The wood is stunning & makes the hallway, please keep the wood!
I would love to see a video about how you search for ideas/images of future kitchen plans AND how you keep those organized!
I lived in a similar house, so I’d definitely recommend half shutters (sheer curtains did not work for us) and a no on painting the banisters. Also, your space would be even more fab with some giant plants. Thanks for sharing.
I love curtains, they soften the space, the living room would look very cosy with them 🥰
Half shutters for sure! Show off those windows. The banister, I would do the spindles white and keep the rest dark, I think when you change the runner it will be a beautiful contrast and you’ll enjoy it/appreciate it differently.
Also congratulations the home is so beautiful and has SO much incredible character.
Love your home Anna. I will like the half shutters along with sheer full curtains and the banister will look beautiful in its original wood colour. Painting it white will look too matchy matchy. Good luck for the future reno.
Shutters are a NO in the front room, curtains yes! I agree with Mark on the dark wood of the stairs!
I love the idea of the half shutters in your living room. It will let the light it but also gives you some privacy.
I would keep the wood but rub it back and re-stain it. 😍 I love your beautiful home.
Definitely side with Mark. Once you put paint in that bannister it’s never going to be the same again, and it’s so beautiful
I would paint the bannister, but not white!
I'd also keep the shutters! We have gorgeous new windows too, but the plantations are timeless and so practical ❤️
Are you planning on painting the hallway a colour on the top half? I think that would look stunning and really make the stairs pop too rather than blend in
Beautiful home! I wish we had more homes like this in Australia 🥰
Love the idea of half shutters. They provide such nice effects with lighting lines on the walls when the sun shines in.
Beautiful home! 😍 I wouldn’t paint the banisters - they are stunning!
Love the skirting board
Hi from New Zealand! What a lovely home, congrats to you and Mark. I’d paint the spindles white or a light colour and leave the newel post and bannister rail natural as they are. Agree with others too that half shutters or shutters you can open at half point would look great and let you still have lots of light but privacy. Some long curtains along with them could be really elegant and super cosy too, especially in winter. Also think understair powder room is really good option if it’s feasible. Looking forward to seeing it evolve!
I am here for the potatoes nursery !
Super dark wood against white is sooo beautiful, keep the banister!
I so love your joyfulness with all things home. As to my 2 cents...do the half shutters & do the spindles in white keep the rest as is...😉
Oh loving your new home Anna! Defs keep the dark wooden bannister! We moved into an old house and it’s such a feature and adds so much character x
Is the office space bigger than the living room? Have you considered flipping the spaces? Or consider putting the TV in the office and setting it up as a TV room/office?
I agree with Mark. Keep the railing the wood that it is. Once you change the carpet to a neutral I think you'll like it much more!
Half shutters with lush flowing curtains for cozy vibes
Yes, I agree with Mark, also. It’s part of the beautiful character of the house
I would do half shutters 😍😍 so gorgeous !!!!
