Ironically my biggest (semi-) gripe with the video: he got everything most other reviewers don't understand about Dreams and then falls into the same old "no creative bone"-trap so many people go hide in. I mean, sure, some people have an insane proclivity for crafts and creative mediums and it sure would show, but short of being restricted by how you move appendages (if they exist in the first place), pretty much anyone can learn anything. It's just that you have to spend a whole bunch of time on it.
It's vague and different for everyone, but the one thing you really have to learn that is at the core of every hobby is persistence. You stick with it, you master it. People immediately castrate themselves just by saying "I'm not the type for this". What, crocheting is an emergent skill that requires a specific brain to develop? No! You just learn it and the better you get, the less people nag at you for sucking at it, the fewer people want you to become a crocheting wizard by age 5, the more time you might want to spend on it and you'll just learn without even realizing it.
"Just do it" is truly great advice and nobody seems to admit it, but everything is possible if you just look beyond the current horizon of what you can do. And if you learn to enjoy the path with its cul-de-sacs and what-have-yous, you won't even mind the failures too much but get excited by the prospect of solving one more puzzle. Same for music, same for acrobatics, same for all things in the world.

The entire point probably is that Sony doesn't need to make any marketing. It's not like you pay like 2000 bucks for a campaign either. To give a small hint: games like GTAV had a dev budget of maybe 100 million USD and ads cost an extra 150 million. We're talking about +150% here, nobody would expect something like Dreams to be marketed in such a fashion and there really is no need if everyone picks it up sooner or later anyway.
Besides, it only gets better as time goes on, so blowing your wad in the beginning seems like a wasteful solution.

Tahar MEBARKI yo they’ve been marketing it for ages

    • @AL2009man
      @AL2009man 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@FFContent False.
With Sony's attitude with Cinematic Games getting a huge marketing push while unique games (see: Gravity Rush 2, Tearaway: Unfolded, Concrete Genie, Until Dawn, Knack 2 and Everybody's Golf) don't get advertised as much (unless you're VR), and when they do, they only market the game during Launch Week and continue as normal.
That's why you see some people believing Cinematic Games is all Sony offers, but it it's not the case. Sony has shown that they have variety of games, but Sony isn't interested on that front.
For Dreams' case, Sony didn't market Dreams as much as it gets closer and closer to launch (if you wanna see that in action, take a look at E3 2018's Press Conference where Sony didn't livestream the Dreams Musical Concert, when it could've been part of the Press Conference), Sony only did a bit of a marketing for Launch Week, and then business as usual.
and then PewDiePIe and VideoGameDunkey played Dreams and all the sudden, Sony released three new trailers showcasing Dreams. This is not the first time that happened, it also happened with Until Dawn (also releasing it alongside Tearaway: Unfolded, Media Molecule previous game) which Sony only gave a weak marketing until bigger TH-camr play it and became the most talked about game for a month.
but unlike others, Dreams has a advantage. they already have a build-in LBP Fanbase with them and Media Molecule has been doing word-of-mouth themselves for a year and a half via their Livestreams, and did a Early Access program (which, was better executed than the Dreams Creator Beta, which was poorly handled).
and in the end, it did pay off.

    • @Reydriel
      @Reydriel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@AL2009man Sony probably don't see the need to market it so heavily. It's the type of product that has to succeed through word of mouth, otherwise it's not going to last very long. They're probably confident that the game will grow by itself.
That and, as others have stated in this comments section, the best of Dreams has arguably yet to come. So spending their budget marketing this to the mainstream, most of who won't even try to create things and only play other's works, in the initial stages of the game where there is still not a lot of quality content, is probably a bit of a waste when they can do it later.

I'm still blown away at how media molecule has pulled off such a vast array of depth in the toolsets for all aspects, and how it has been given to the world for only 40 bucks. Limitless potential unlike anything that's ever been seen on a gaming console, I've heard about school classrooms having minecraft as part of a creativity curriculum but just imagine the possibilities if students were given Dreams at a young age to exercise their imagination. Dreams makes minecraft look like babies first fisher price toy, and the things that people have created in minecraft are seriously impressive. Ok there's a lot to unpack in this.
    A) This is a perfect description of what this is. Just like RPG maker isn't for everyone so is this. I remember myself having an idea in high school and spending night after night learning unity to create my idea with bassicaly no coding background. If I had this tool today, my idea would be on that community page and I hope this is the case for more people. Event the most basic most stupid thing you can imagine, must be accessible to make. Being creative is what keeps a lot of us ticking.
    B) Reviewing games IS creative. This doesn't go so much to Ralph but to the comments. Reviewing games isn't just "play the game then call john and tell him your thoughts". You have to write a comprehensible script that people understand without using the product themselves while describing the product truthfully. Then there's the editing which is a whole other part of creativity. If you don't think that editing a simple video is creative you are simply wrong.

For years I’ve had ideas for games and animations that I’ve been wanting to make. But, every tool or software available out there has a difficult learning curve or require complex coding language that I can’t even begin to understand.
Even stuff like Source Filmmaker, despite it being sold as a user-friendly efficient tool to make animations easier than something like Maya is not an easy feat to master. Hell, the devs of that software never bothered finishing their tutorial videos explaining how to use the damn thing leaving the rest to just guess work.
This, on the other hand is incredible. Even the act of sculpting, something that I’ve never even considered trying because I lack any artistic bones in me looks so damn fun because of the intuitive tools.
Your comparisons to apps like TikTok is spot on. People don’t take into account how creation tools have evolved to make video and even website design more accessible, so why wouldn’t Dreams be any different?
Maybe my dream game can finally happen this time. No more slaying over software that makes me rage quit, spending money on artists that never delivered or being stressed and overwhelmed leaving unfinished projects. I can start making stuff on my own with creativity being my only limitation.
The only issue is the $340 paywall to get a PS4 and the game, and like you said, it’s too early in the game’s lifespan to have anything worthwhile playing. So I guess I’ll have to save up some cash in the meantime.

I really like this specific review along with the many others out there as you look Dreams as a platform or tool for making games or even anything. Another great point is how you should probably wait for a bit and keep an eye on Dreams until it starts to accumulate more "polished" content similar to Art's Dream or until they reach the level creators took in Little Big planet. However i'm fine if someone purchases Dreams for the current state it is including the mixture of masterful and nightmarish creations the community has made. I also like how IGN put it in their review; "This is one dream I urge you not to sleep on.

Sure sometimes I see leftover edits and snaps from other footage pop up, but the way you write and speak about a subject with relevant info then wrap back around to the topic is always great, good job!

I reeeaaaallly hope they release this for pc man. I tried creating but I hate the controls for moving stuff with the dual shock and I can't afford to shell out like £100 on the motion controllers. But let me use a mouse a omg this will be amazing. I hope they allow stylus support too so artist can literally draw in Dreams.

Saying that Dreams costs next to nothing is absolutely accurate. For a game developed over a decade to be so cheap AU$54 / US$40, this price point is another indication intention decisions made in order for these tools to be even more accessible. This really is just the beginning, as Dreams would only lose popularity as soon as people stop having an imagination. So instead of a AAA game that starts at a high retail price, they've set it reasonable and it'll likely not drop much at all. In a years time when that absolutely must play game is only available through Dreams, people will flock. Sony playing the long game.

Hi! Big fan of your work. I’m in the middle of the latest FPS episode.
I’m hoping a new comment on a three year old video isn’t the worst way to submit this request, but it’s relevant.
You may have heard that it’s recently been all but confirmed that Dreams was supposed to get a PC and PS5 port. These ports were near completion before Media Molecule had to lay a bunch of people off and shift focus to their next project.
The Dreams community is, probably futilely, trying to convince Sony that Dreams deserves another shot by releasing these supposedly nearly complete ports.
We’ve been compiling footage of the best creations and trying to raise awareness of the amazing things you can make in Dreams.
I think it’d go a long way if someone like you who thought so highly of Dreams when it launched were to revisit it and profile the creations that have been released.
I’d be more than happy to find a good list of creations for you to check out.
I know you’re busy, especially in yet another stacked February, but if there’s any way you could consider helping us get the word out you would be doing the entire games industry a service by helping one of its greatest achievements get a second chance.
Either way, I wish you all the best. Thanks for reading all that.

The mod community would have a field day for a long time to come
Lately I've been playing MHW on PC, it is really good with reshade and mods be it for cosmetic or game effect/change like new monster or skill rebalance etc but each new updates the capcom team try their best to make modding impossible or harder, the moment Iceborne drop for example they add CRC to disable cheat engine and mod for accessing the game but it only took a day for the CE comunity to create a working CT and the CRC end up taking up resource and either crash the game or drop the performance for everyone, be it mod user or not which drive me nuts
It took longer for the mod community to bypass it but we did it in like a week? or so and capcom finally realize how stupid it is and how damaging the change to performance and remove CRC entirely, but they still try to make modding harder and harder each update but of course the modding community always find a way to bypass it given enough time and get the upper hand, still it really is a pain in the ass to update the mods be it for user and modder alike each time there is a big update to the game which turn away some creator and user and make it harder for the community to thrive
Yes, I understand that there are some people that use cheat or mod to do something stupid that could affect other people in a negative way such as one-hit kill monster or unlimited HP, stamina etc but after hundreds of hour, hundreds of online hunt with random and even few months ago before Iceborne drop where modding and cheating is easier to do, I have only meet 4-5 people who did something like that out of the hundreds if not thousands of player I meet randomly in the hunt.
99% of people who use a mod did it to improve their experience and they have the conscience to not ruin other people's experience with the game, so I really dislike the way Capcom handles MHW and that is on top of the pretty awful PC port. The game is amazing alright, but it could have been much better
Anyway sorry for the rant, looking at Dreams and its amazing potential just made me mad at how bad it goes for some community of modder nowadays and I know MHW is not the only one.

Here's how people should think about Dreams
    Bottomline:
Platform Engine meets the look of Pixar.
The way the game was created was to give you the ability to "loosely" create your own platform (really).
That's just how the game is set up.
Its like an alternate challenger Mario Maker except a little less with a whole lot of other abilities given to it to allow the player to create other things since the PS4 gives it the power to do so. But at the heart of it, its just a basic platform engine and a kid's perception creation tool. Which is probably the best at that of what it is. (Like a creative kid that didn't know what he was doing and a genie appeared to grant him a wish. Since the kid was inexperienced, he wished for the ability to create ANYTHING he wanted but and give others the ability as well. Everyone else ran off with the idea of creation with it first before he.)
    Is it worth your money?
    YES!
Even if you don't wanna create anything, its like seeing what other people, the little people, and fans are capable of. Plus, buying this 1 game is like buying many many MANY different versions of games at once. Is it going to be replacing games made by Triple A companies, indie game creators, and/ or the professionals? Not by a long shot. Its too short and it can only be played online. You can't download anyone's games as far as I know. Especially, at the deathbed of the PS4 even if it will be ported to the PS5. Its still fun to have. The games can only be played inside of the "DREAMS" Dreamiverse anyways. Which means, you have to own the actual game or downloaded game of Dreams in order to play it. You can't just download an app player like the RPG Maker Player for RPG MAKER FES for the 3DS or the "free" programs of the Unreal Engine or Unity (which I could not use at all) and just play the games. You gotta own it. Its still worth it though.
If you have an original idea for a game and it ain't a platform, you're not gonna get the full feel of how you would want it to be with this game. Thought its a nice attempt and fairly imaginably possible.
My score: 8.5 out of 10.
    -------------------------------------------
Even though I first thought of this game back sometime in 2001.

I got Dreams during the beta, but I didn't play it much. It seemed very cool and I had fun playing other peoples creations, but they were way too short and not very complete. I decided to try learning how to make a game, but I didn't like the controls that much. The main thing I didn't like was how the cursor was moved with motion controls. You had to move the controller and I didn't like that. It made things harder to place exactly where you wanted them. I gave up kind of quickly, but I might try it again soon. I think that this game will get much better over time and I think having it on PC would be really great. You could be more precise and you could probably get extra things to help build your game online. Dreams is very cool and I hope it succeeds. I just think it would be much better on PC and think it will take time to get good, like TH-cam.

Minor correction, early access is not the only way game devs get feedback from people about their game. Don't forget that there's playtesting involved in alpha, closed and open beta. Virtually every game dev cycle will have certain amount of gathering player feedback.
That aside, Dreams seem like it has potential to inspire a newer generation of game devs, but those definitely will not flourish within the game itself. I can't even see it being used by indie devs as a prototyping tool, since the content one create within it cannot be brought out of it, and it's not clear that those content legally belongs to the creator and not Media Molecule, one has to be cautious about overhyping it as a revolutionary democratization of game development.
There are already lower barriers of entry to game dev with Unreal and Unity engine being free, and rapid prototyping will only get easier as more tools are developed for those engines. As for Dreams, if after some time, the company decides to retroactively claim legal right over all user generated content, and start suing aspiring devs who first found success within Dreams but brought their original idea to Unity and put it on the market, then who's to say who owns that IP? One just have to look at Blizzard's new policies about mod creation to know how low a 'good' game company can fall for potential profits from monetizing player generated content.
IP is the new commodity of our times, and you're right to worry about the likes of Nintendo and Disney coming down hard on Dreams, either they will want to charge licensing fees and redistribution rights for games created on Dreams, or they will do their best to shut it all down.

You mentioned that a goal for the future is for people to be able to sell their games. While this will motivate some people, I wonder if it won't be detrimental in the end. At the moment assets are free and you can modify many existing games, when commercial and licensing factors become part of the picture it could slow down the open community.
