      I really dislike how the people, not the government, always have to come together and have each others back. Prime Ministers are on holiday while people fight for their lives and in the end the money comes from people, not the government. I have the feeling they count on that to rebuild the infrastructure so they can keep bathing in their mountains of money.
      God bless and keep yourself save from the fires. I hope it's over soon.

    A video called "How Subnautica uses Terror" has a really interesting point about why the game is so scary. The idea is basically that the game being easier makes it more terrifying, because you rarely die to the monsters, so they don't lose their mystery. If they would just kill you all the time, they'd lose their scariness and just become annoying.

    Glad to see Subnautica getting the love it deserves. It's easily one of my all-time favorite games.
    Also, on the note of the Cyclops: I think it's important to think of the Cyclops as a movable base of operations, not as a vehicle that allows you to really zip about. I ended up building pots and growing fruit trees in my Cyclops for food+water. I had the thermal-generation upgrade on my Prawn, and would hop the Prawn out of the Cyclops near lava pools to recharge all my power cells; and so on. Playing it this way, in my opinion, really honed the experience because I'd end up spending days, if not weeks, unspeakably deep within the ocean with barely a memory of what the sky looked like. Being just one guy alone on a planet, trying to pilot a sub meant for at least three operators through lava tubes while not sure you'll ever find your way back to the surface was incredibly nail-biting and real to me, and it really was a profoundly unique experience.

    • @fatuousinnovatorofsadness4640
      @fatuousinnovatorofsadness4640 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I guess the mistake then was that there's no way to incentivize this kind of playstyle without making the endgame bigger. I imagine it would be progression-gating going deeper in the sub to use it like you described would mean having to pilot it to, say, the entrance of the lava-caves, but the only way to go deeper is to make some base-like parts of the sub reliant on time, and have a few scattered around some obscure parts of the map or maybe a new section you have to explore entirely. The prerequisite to all of this being that the submarine has it's own unique fabricator designed around making it a mobile base, and that the only way to make a base that allows you to progress is to have it be close to the surface so it has access to the sun.
      So you need to go deeper, but the mk3 module that lets you do so requires a component located in the deep grand reef, which the sub can't access. But in order to craft it, you need a specific kind of crafting table that ALSO has a piece reliant on going to, say, the crater's edge. That piece expires within a minute, so you need to harvest it, get to the sub, and use the unique fabricator to make the components that you then use to build a crafting table-thing. The table can make all the pieces unique to the sub (and you could design aspects of returning to the home base for certain upgrades around this as well), but most importantly, it is the only thing capable of utilizing components that expire for the sub's upgrades.
      So now that you have the table, you go to the grand reef for one component that expires that can only be harvested by the prawn suit, and then the blood kelp, then the bulb zone. You craft these components, but the only way to make the upgrade is with the table that can only be crafted within bases. So you go back to base, craft the first half of the mk3, then take a second trip out and get the components, many of them being gated behind tunnels that are only small enough for the seamoth or, like the underwater islands, only accessible via the seamoth or the player using extra canisters of oxygen. all across the map, then you go back to your base and craft it all there. The final components to the mk3 is located within, say, the dunes, then the lost river, then the entrance to the lava zone, and so the best way to make it is by taking the sub to those places as one big expedition, making the mk3, installing it, then going down deeper now that you have it.
      This gets the player into the mindset of using the cyclops for long expeditions, planning routes, and returning to the home base in order to progress further. You can also now design systems around building bases for storage and smaller expeditions, but the only way to truly progress through the game is to do EITHER longer expeditions with the cyclops as a mobile base, or build bases and slowly progress with those further down, which imo both eliminate the issues he talked about here in their own ways. These were already systems in the game, but they were ancillary and easily missed, leading to issues like what he described. I feel like this would help with feelings of progression and engagement, though.

    • @VeraVemaVena
      @VeraVemaVena 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fatuousinnovatorofsadness4640 I actually have an idea on reworking the Cyclops' power source: They're called called Lithium Rods, they take up a 2x2 slot in your inventory, give 500 power and are crafted with 2 power cells, 3 uraninite and a plasteel ingot in a new habitat compartment made specifically for the Cyclops. This compartment comes with a fabricator made specifically for crafting the lithium rods and Cyclops upgrades as well as a recharging station for rods. You can also dock your Cyclops to the habitat and enter it via a ladder located in the center of the room.
      The lithium rods will power the Cyclops' engine, the shield generator, sonar, floodlights, oxygen production and recharging docked vehicles but don't come with the Cyclops by default. Instead, 2 power cells will come with the Cyclops that handle all of the other upgrades, powering any interior modules placed inside, internal lighting and oxygen production in the case of the lithium rods running out of power. The Cyclops' engine room will be redisgned to have 2 rod slots and a power cell slot in between them on each side.
      The habitat blueprint is found in a databox, located in the wrecks of the Sea Treader's path or Dunes. Once you unlock the ion blueprints from the thermal plant, you can upgrade the lithium rods into ion rods with 3 ion cubes at a modification station. Ion Rods give 1,750 power each.

    For me, I enjoyed the hell out of my Cyclops. Personally, I only used guides to figure out where some of the more obscure materials were (I'm looking at Nickel here). The Cyclops, for me, turned a lot of the game systems on their head because it became not only a mode of transportation, but a mobile base (I built a massive storage system on the lower level, and foodstuffs on the upper level, along with everything needed to craft).... It made exploring the more extreme areas much more accessible.

      Leviathans are no real threat thou as soon as you understand how they work. Adult Ghost is somewhat dangerous due to how damn fast the thing turns, but there's like.. one or two of them on the map if you don't go off the edge, and in places that you don't even need to visit. Reapers are just cute king-size Stalkers that you can dance around without issue. Overgrown cave lizards like their fire breath and go fast, but that's about it - in Prawn they can't do much to you and hardest thing about them is scanning as they keep swimming away. Prawn in general is a god mode making lava zone a recreational walk. Even in Cyclops, thing that is made to suffer from creature attacks, you are incredibly safe as soon as you understand that as long as you don't move and do not make noise you are about as interesting to leviathans as a rock.

      It's perfectly safe once you learn where the reapers operate. They just go around in the dunes, north and east of the enforcer platform and the Aurora. I never traveled too far to the south but there's literally no reason to but the only thing i encountered was a juvenile ghost which poses no significant threat since you can easily get away from them. Sea dragons are just there for fun if you walk around in prawn but as long as you get too close.

    • @semanticsamuel936
      @semanticsamuel936 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They aren't a threat. They're just scary. Even if a Reaper grabs you, unless you're already on death's door you can escape. If you see them coming, you can easily dodge them and get away, even if you're not in a sub. You can even scan a Reaper if you're brave enough. I'm not disputing that they're scary (I've jumped out of my skin more than once, even if I know exactly where they operate), but it's an illusion of threat. That's one of the strange things about the game - there's not really any reason to die. You get tonnes of warning about oxygen, and even if you're at zero, you've still got a good 10 seconds of swimming. Food is everywhere, even if you have to eat it raw. Water can be problematic if you haven't brought reserves, but even then you can find enough to stave off dehydration wherever you are. The most dangerous thing in the game are Crashfish - they can whittle down your health in no time, especially pre-Seaglide.

    This game is one of the few that literally change my life.
    Im gonna need to explain this one do I?
    Ok so, since i was young i hated ocean and water( not the drink). I was scared to death to go below my neck in any pool or beach. When i was 13, my school had obligatory swim session...
    So i was humiliated, shouted at by the teacher, mock at and even beaten up in the changing room.
    I had this game one year ago. It was an horror game for me. The scariest game i've ever play. But then, i was calm in the safe zone. Then the green plant zone. And soon enough, i wasn't scared of peaceful fish. Stalker were the next nerf.
    Only the abyss and all form of hostile leviathan scare me now.
    I've even play on vr... one of the worst good idea ever. I felt peaceful after 20 hour in vr. So i tried to replicate that in school. Wouldn't you know, i became in the top 5 in my entire school.
    So... in short, this game is really important to me.

    One thing I would like to point out is that Subnautica's opening moments of gameplay are genius. After you climb out of the pod, there's nothing but the water and the Aurora in the distance. Most players will then just push forward and dive into the water. You get this beautiful underwater landscape rolling out from the player, with the area going deeper in the background. This I contend puts three ideas in the player's head:
    1) This game isn't about finding land surrounded by water and building there. The water is where the game is going to happen.
    2) Going down is how you're going to progress the game.
    3) We're not in Kansas any more Toto.
    It uses these first few minutes to inform the player, get them hooked, and get them exploring. This gets further reinforced through the gameplay, keep swimming down, that's where the cool shit is.

    instead of preparing for that one big descent, i liked to do a bit of an "expedition" style of gameplay.
    Build a fairly small base in a little save spot fairly deep, and went on to still visit my base near the shallows and back to push a bit further.
    on my first playthrough i didnt even get to build the cyclops before reaching the lava biome. when i got that kyanite i finally had more freedom...
    i saw the pressure as a timer until i had to head back to my base before being crushed.
    finally building the cyclops felt like a big archievement after that, it was so satisfying breezing through my "checkpoints".
    wish i could play this game for "the first time" again
    Edit: Because of this game i got Below zero as soon as it was awailable and was a bit disappointed of the story.
    they took one of the biggest elements away that made subnautica so good: That feeling of isolation, being on your own in this chrisis the character is going through.
    They announced a big change to the story, so i hope some of that will come back. Looking forward to that already

      Eh, I kinda liked the nice contrast between the two games. The original Subnautica left you alone, stranded, relying purely on your survival instincts. Below zero gave a new start by making you stranded, but not alone in the planet, with your sister up above and an alien inside your head. Overhauling the story kinda makes it feel like it wants to ride the tailcoat of the first Subnautica. But then again, the game isn't complete, and just like the first one, I am certain it will be very good once finished.

    I would highly recommend playing the sequel, Below Zero, when it releases (at some point later this year). As of now, the game is still in early access but very close to release, and just two days ago I started playing through it.
    The problem that you had with the Cyclops is eliminated with the Sea Truck; a happy medium between the Seamoth and the Cyclops. You can get it pretty early on, but there are several modules you can unlock for it to turn it into a mobile base of sorts. Adding more modules decreases your speed and maneuverability, but gives you more advantages on-the-go. It's completely customizable and very satisfying.
    The biomes are stunning and unique, but they still feel like you're on the same planet as Subnautica. From floating lilypad islands to kelp forest caves to the terrifying depths of the deep twisty bridges, each new biome I've encountered has left me thinking, "Woah, this is awesome."
    A good portion of the game takes place on the land, too. It isn't so much that it diminishes the significance of staying underwater, but it has a very unique feel and important objectives. On land, you have to avoid staying outside for too long or you'll freeze. You can build a hoverbike to traverse the icy landscapes quickly, and you'll keep finding new nooks and crannies to explore. Above the ice is also where, in my opinion, the most terrifying biome and creature awaits.
    In terms of wildlife, Below Zero has more than Subnautica-- with both friendly and dangerous creatures. Some fish from Subnautica reappear in Below Zero, but most of them are new. There are much more smaller fish you can eat, but also many more predators you want to avoid. And there are some BIG predators.
    The story of Below Zero is still in development, so it could change before release, but as it currently is, I think it's as good (if not better) than the story of Subnautica. The biggest difference is that there are interactions between your character and a few other characters. However, the mystery and piecing together the bits of the story are still there. You still search for PDAs containing logs from crews who came before you. You're still only given hints as to what the next objectives are (for instance, you could be told that the last known location of something is West of a specific landmark and probably approximately X meters below the surface.)
    Materials gathering doesn't feel as tedious as it did in Subnautica. There's a much better spread of resources throughout the world, especially as you get deeper down.
    tl;dr Subnautica: Below Zero is a phenomenal sequel to the original game, and in my opinion is even better. It takes everything good about Subnautica and expands on it. It improves on the aspects of Subnautica that were lacking. It's just as beautiful and awe-inspiring as Subnautica, and is even more terrifying. I don't know when the game will officially release, but I highly recommend you play it if you enjoyed Subnautica or just enjoy survival games in general.

      The horror aspect also thrives in Below Zero too, and I would say it's just as good as it was in Subnautica. One of the biomes has a long system of trenches, and going down them is TERRIFYING because you can constantly see the shadow of a leviathan swimming above you, waiting for a chance to attack. Considering a good number of valuable fragments are found near there, experiencing that fear and then having to face it to get your fragments is both very scary and immensely satisfying.

      Did they fix the bugs from Subnautica though? It's the only reason I haven't bought sub-zero yet. It bugs me that I lost both a Prawn and a Seamoth to sinkage into the ground & the Prawn getting stuck randomly in the alien bases was a nuisance, both of which have been problems for years based on Steam forums, and they never bothered fixing it (I don't mind as much about the excessive clipping & fauna entering bases because these problems don't generally set back gameplay). I absolutely adore Subnautica but not sure I trust the devs.

      @@vellathewench *nods* np! I would argue that vids on how to drive it probably don't really show actual practical use, they just show little clips here-and-there, which is why I suggested mine where I go down to the Lost River and even the Lava Zone in real situations, unedited footage. I can tell you from experience that the Cyclops will never fit into the Mushroom Caves that I know of, both entrances are way too small for that thing. But you can indeed get it into the Lost River, though I know from experience, also, that one of its entrances is ridiculously small and difficult to squeeze into (not impossible though). And the transition from the Tree down into the Inactive Lava Zone? You have to turn the sub to the side to lower yourself into that little crevasse otherwise you're not going to fit. Getting into the lost river? I always use the West entrance; there's only 1 Leviathan between it and the Inactive Lava Zone and it's usually rather easy to sneak by him without him noticing you, and the entrance is a LOT more kind than the northern one where you found the lifepod. The best way to find that entrance is to take your Seamoth, go to where the lifepod is, go into the River (careful you don't exceed Crush depth!) and make your way over to that other entrance (you'll pass a ruin on the way, you might want to open for some more ion cubes!) and drop a beacon there so you can find it when you take the cyclops.

    For me personally the game had a 4th part. when you have gone so deep held your breath nd dove ever deeper into the mysterious and creepy depths. When you come back to the shallows again its like coming up for air after you have pushed your courage and desire to explore to its limit. you come back to the shallows and look around feeling like "My god... I remember when this was the most terrifying place i thought i could go XD" It almost feels like a reward to be able to come back and kiss the lifepod that kept you safe at the start of all this.

      I've heard some people say that they didn't know about the Knife.... dude, that was like the first thought on my mind. "Can I make a weapon? I need food and I don't see any edible plant life which means I need to kill something and I will likely be attacked. What weapons do I have at my disposal?" and so I explore the build menu in the fabricator and oh. A knife. Okay. Better than nothing. That's one of the first things I need, right beyond an O2 tank. But the Knife takes rubber and I'm like "ok, how do I get rubber?" I think THAT part they could have done a better approach to. There's a floating white prompt when you swim close to seaweed but it's easily obscured by the seaweed itself so you might miss it, that points to the bulbs of the plant and this is before you have the scanner so you can't scan it to know that its bulbs can be made into rubber. Buuuuuut on the flipside, I _suppose_ the developer's logic was "those clusters look like edible plants and the player is likely looking for food so they might grab one thinking they can eat it and instead the PDA tells you it is a crafting resource".

      @@Dhalin It's a great game. In general it does a pretty good job of pointing you in a general direction to progress the story. Still, I ended up looking at guides here and there. I disagree with Skill Up, though - late game is awesome in its own way. I filled up my large sub with lockers full of torpedoes, the mech, and as much resources as I could carry, then I went hunting for the reapers and ghosts. Good times.

    • @Dhalin
      @Dhalin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Saith516 I kinda agree though I never bothered with the torpedos, to me, they just seemed to expensive and impractical to actually use, it was far easier to just outrun/avoid the monsters to get my objectives done, but to each their own! I did look up maps because seriously, not having a map in this world is rather crippling and disorienting. I would find something, and even WITH a map, be searching for hours with it and with the very limited inventory space you have, would end up not wanting to carry around a ton of beacons to mark every shipwreck I came across that I was not willing/able to search at the time and then when I could, be unable to find it later.

    • @semanticsamuel936
      @semanticsamuel936 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dhalin I never bothered with torpedoes either. You can generally just go in a straight line until the nasties lose interest, then just go out and repair. I'd have liked more reason to have them though. I have mixed views about the map. Not having it does force you to pay attention to your surroundings in a way that you rarely have to do in other games, but it's really annoying coming across something cool that you can't explore right now, knowing you'll forget where it is. Beacons are good, but like you say, there's a limit to how many you can carry.

    • @Dhalin
      @Dhalin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@semanticsamuel936 And/or the fact you can't make beacons out in the open. That's why I mentioned having to manually map the areas yourself first, like, similar range as to the Seaglide, like 100m circle around you which forces you to explore these areas first, and maybe said map is only accessible at a base, maybe a Map Room or something. That way you don't have access to it 100% of the time, OR, you can access a low-res version of it on your PDA but if you want to really see what's what, you go to your Map Room. Still gotta pay attention to landmarks and such though.
      And besides, let's be real -- I'm willing to bet a large number of people simply looked a map up online and alt-tabbed. Said maps were full of spoilers and gave you ALL the information. I bet far fewer players would have done this if there was a reasonable solution in-game. It's a similar dilemma of Piracy vs DRM where the biggest DRM causes the most Piracy, but laxing up on the DRM/making your game more available/cheaper makes it less attractive to pirates and people are more likely to buy.
      At least then, the developers of Subnautica can control how much information the players receive through such maps. Of course some players would still look up all the stuff, but I'm willing to bet a fewer number of them would, if such an in-game solution were present.

      There's actually few times in the game where you look into an actual abyss. Usually if you just get to the edge of the map which there's not much reason to ever do. In most cases, once you get the Seamoth, it tells you how deep you can dive safely and if you see a ledge, you just go slow and if it looks like you won't reach the bottom before you run out of safe depth, then just turn back and go back up and wait until you have the necessary upgrades to get down there further.

    This captures one of the fundamental shifts in game design that I absolutely despise over the last 2 decades. When I go back and play games from my childhood and adolescence like FF1-11, old school marios, etc. etc. (yes, I still play FFXI lol, though I also play XIV actively as well), it's staggering to see how far level design has dropped and guard rails have gone up. Games aren't created with the same implicit respect for the gamer's intelligence and patience anymore. Blame can be had on both sides (developer + gamer), but it just feels lazy in game design/creativity these days.... like, what's the fucking point of a puzzle that actively provides instructions to solve? Rant over.
