They should retrain Frog the Jam as Frog anti support. Give him the most annoying, busted ability, but make it work only if a Frog is summoned. Something like: If a Frog monster is summoned to the field, you can special summon this card from the hand, and if you do banish all Frog monsters from the field, both hands and graveyards and place a counter on this card for every card banished this way. You can only control one Frog the Jam. If this card would leave the field by one of your opponent's cards effect or tribute, you can remove one counter from this card, and if you do destroy that card and this card cannot leave the field for the rest of the phase you activated this effect. As long as this card is face up on the field, Frog monsters cannot be summoned. If you control Frog the Jam and draw a card, reveal it to your opponent, if it's a Frog monster, you have to banish it face down. This card gains 200 atk and def for each banished Frog monster. The effects of this card cannot be negated.
ya i just see myself watching a frog deck do their thing, blow through a crapton of cards, then go to summon something only for me to say nope nope jam time. add a staunch defender and makurya to the hand and watch the fun as they MUST attack my stupidly op monster with whatever they have left.

The Talwar is a type of sword used in India. Actually, talwar literally means sword in many Indian languages and what is Beast of Talwar holding? A giant sword! Would you look at that?!
I think what makes the "Rancher" part of the name so weird is that...it's probably a direct translation error of "launcher", which in japanese is pronounced ランチャー or Ranchaa. So when localizing they probably overlooked it and thought it was "rancher".
If you take into consideration that in the Heavy Storm / Storm artwork the farmer is oblivious, it may be that he's deaf and observer is yelling out "HEY! TORNADO!" to get his attention.

Well in the old days, the -trix suffix was used for women while the -tor suffix was used for men. Like a male pilot was an aviator and a female was an aviatrix, a male pit fighter was a gladiator and a female was a gladiatrix. As opposed to now where the -tor suffix is used for both and Trix is for kids.

Utopia was always weird to me too since hope and utopia weren't exactly synonyms and a card called "Hope" doesn't seem like that strange of a concept. I saw the Zexal anime subbed, so when Yuma called it Hope, I was like "wait, Utopia is just an English thing?"

For the Shark dude, "Hopu", which is the Japanise pronunciation of the English word "Hope" doesn't appear, but instead just the Japanese word for hope/wish. As of why they decides to translate "King of Wishes, Hope" as "Utopia", well, that word can also be used to indicate a wish that is impossible to come true, which is appropriate, and another one, is that it is shorter and sounds more like an actual name.

You know what is more fugged up? The Death Toys archetype are called Frightful in English instead of Des Toys. Now you get a card like Toy Parade, which is always treated as a Frightful card, but it's only there because Frightful are part of the Toy archetype. Now imagine there is a spell or trap that searches Frightful Spell or Trap cards aka. Death Toy Cards. That card can't search Toy Parade because Toy Parade is not treated as a Death Toy card in Japanese.
though this would be the case looking at the transliterated names, a potential Frightfur searcher would not be able to search Toy Parade; in Japanese, the name of the archetype is デストーイ (de-su to-o-i) and Toy Parade is called トイ・パレード (to-i pa-re-e-do) it's only a one character difference, but it's enough to exclude it from a search, so its status is the same as in English

It also explains why they used the term 'archfiend' a fiend is another term for a demonic or devilish creature, an archfiend is essentially a more powerful demon. So it basically saying it's the demon/daemon archtype without using the daemon word.

Fun fact in italian axe of despaire is called "ascia di distruzione" that in english means "axe of destruction" i dont know what Konami did but they sure successfully failed translating that card. Also in the italian versione "hey! Turnade" was called "ritorno totale" that means "total return" after the change its now called "Ehi! ritorno" that CAN mean "ehi! i come back". I did not misspelled that wrong "hey" is written "ehi" and "ritorno" means "i come back" or "he/she/it come back" in the italian version. So our last versione is grammatically wrong.
A talwar is actually a type of sword, the card's flavour text also gives you that impression saying how only the most badass demons are allowed to brandish the talwar or something like that
for the launcher issue we might be seeing a case of translation error because a common issue is that there is no L sound in Japanese -so they usually use an R sound replace the L in lancher with an R and you have Rancher what if its a case of someone was translating names and mixed something. They wrote down on their notes buster would be substituted for this word but they translated the word as rancher and who ever actually put it in saw buster rancher, and didn't pay attention to what they were doing and when ya thats fine.
I think we really dodged a bullet there. We could have had, "Rauncher" and that would have been so much worse than any other translation they could have come up with.
@@BlueSparxLPs still even back in the day when the card came out i never used it as i couldn't figure out what to do with it getting a 2500 point boost is ok but it doesn't really help you when you have to put it on a monster of 1000 or less attack and only works against things with 2500 or more points, unless you play a gravity bind deck or something else but even then not really useful, as it was faster to bull rush the enemy

How is Red-Eyes not an honorable mention? It’s maybe not top ten material, but definitely a crazy one. Red-eyes B. Chick being heavily excluded from the archetype until they changed it to Black dragon’s Chick. And then they erratad all the support cards after finally updating Red-eyes B. Dragon to Red-eyes Black Dragon.
Good one! I forgot that it actually affected its searchability for awhile since they said the name in full in the anime. There's a lot of cards out there, so we were bound to miss some good ones like that.

They shortened Black to B Daemon/Archfiend was localized as Skull in Summoned Skull Dragon has been shortened to D. such as in Lord of D. So Black Skull Dragon could have been B. Skull D. where all three words in its name had localization inconsistencies.
Red-eyes Black Chick got the same treatment that Frog the Jam did, it was excluded from Red-eyes Black Dragon (despite being the Kaibaman for Red-eyes decks) in several card effects, then got it's name change to Black Dragon's Chic
Some potential uses for Frog the Jam: Use Rescue Otter in conjunction with Traffic Ghost to special summon 3 Frog the Jams, and then you can go into either a Link Summon or Xyz Summon, or special summon a creature that can be special summoned with three tributes. You can use a similar tactic with Rescue Rabbit. You can also do something similar with Unexpected Dai or Double Summon. Alternatively, you can run exactly one copy of Frog the Jam just to throw your opponent off by why you would be running such a card.

A few thoughts: • What's really baffling is they somehow mistransliterated tornado into trunade when the card's Japanese name wasn't even torunedo, it was harikēn (hurricane) • What I always found the weirdest (besides Trunade) is that English cards often used Japanese words in their names when the original Japanese cards had English words in their names, as if the fact that the card used a foreign language was something they needed to preserve in translation. E.g. Hitotsu-Me Giant (jp for "one-eye") had as its original Japanese name "Saikuropusu" (cyclops, an English word). And Dokuroyaiba (jp for "skull blade") had Būmeran (boomerang) in its Japanese name. • Non-English western translations can get bad translations as a result of translating twice, first from jp, then from English. E.g. in both jp and English, Treeborn frog's name is a pun on a frog being revived. What makes Beast of Talwar even more ridiculous is that they made the same localization for Gilfer Daemon. First it was translated as Beast of Gilfer in the TCG, but with the renaming of old cards to make them part of their respective archetype, it's now named Archfiend of Gilfer. Why Konami didn't feel it necessary to do the same for Beast of Talwar we will never know I guess

I ended up doing the Q&A answers in a few TH-cam livestreams in 2019 since the original video announcement wasn't seen by many viewers, so we didn't get many questions. As a person who watched the Japanese sub before getting properly into the game it's difficult to get used to the English names, especially when it comes to the Hero monsters, I always call Avian, Featherman.
I never knew the term "retrain" came from Obnoxious Celtic Guard's Japanese name, that's really cool! Also, if they had to errata Frog the Jam's name, I am shocked and appalled they didn't go with the wonderful pun Toad Jam. It was right there, guys!
Next Yu-Gi-Oh countdown has to be the Top 10 Yu-Gi-Oh with weird Types. And I'm hoping that the number 1 will be a Three-Way Tie between Oppressed People, People Running About and United Resistance.
In a weird way, I think their types actually DO make some sense. Oppressed People is aqua type, likely in reference to their blood, sweat and tears that they are being forced to endure in their current state. People Running About is pyro type because the chaos is spreading like a wildfire. As for United Resistance, it's a thunder type because that type is associated with electricity, and there is now a metaphorical friction occurring between the people who are fighting back against their oppressive ruler and the government that is trying to keep them under their heel (honestly, it's probably the weakest reasoning I have for that type, but it was the best I could come up with)
I felt Obnoxious Celtic Guard was obnoxious because he cannot be destroyed by battle by a monster with more than 1900. It’s like you can’t get rid of him, he’s obnoxious.
Solid Soldier is probably because "Solidman" sounds kinda dirty. Underrated Destiny HERO change (because it didn't happen that often) was changing "Guy" to "Dude" which actually gave a bigger D motif but it was only used on Diamond and Double Dudes. I think the weirdest Destiny HERO change was Captain Tenacious, which was made just because SOMEONE in charge of GX's localization was such a huge fan of Tenacious D that they even referenced it in the actual show. Beast of Talwar is named as such because he wields tulwars. A type of sword. Celestial Sword - Eatos is actually a screwup on the Japanese's part caused by them not checking the localization of EN cards. Because the Noble Knights and Noble Arms were TCG exclusives, when originally printed they did not have cards like Noble Knight Joan or Celestial Sword - Eatos in mind, and only when the OCG called them "Holy Knight" and "Holy Sword" did they have to retroactively change card names in English. Gazelle is particularly strange in that the only Phantom Beast cards ever made were made after Gazelle and they could have just called the archetype "Mythical Beast". Yeah it would, much later, make the odd sounding "Mecha Mythical Beast" but it's less weird than a forced errata on a Normal Monster. I wanted Frog the Jam to get renamed to Toad Jam to fix the archetype issue. And if a Jam or Slime archetype was made and the card would need to be renamed again that would only increase the meme value of the card.
"Desu" is actually a pun. It can mean both the English word "death", or it can be tacked on to the end of a sentence to mean "it is", which is basically a way of making it more formal.

I just play Duel Links now (very regularly), but I follow some of the modern TCG too. That being said, Duel Links is just where I'm active in terms of playing currently. I was a player back in the GOAT days, though.

Love it! I've always thought Tekken deserved a rep for how it helped popularize fighting games with its various iterations. Kazuya is a more interesting protagonist than Jin imo, so I prefer him, but I may have chosen Heihachi over all of them since his has a bit more of an iconic design with that hair and gi.
Bloo-D is probably the best at paddleball too. The "L" & "R" mistranslation is the most glaring with Rancher, but it did also give us Jerry Beans Man at least. John #2 is happy to share his name with John. The younger bro usually gets more attention. Skull stuff is so early I don't see any mistake in editing it, just a case of getting unlucky. They should retrain Frog the Jam as Frog anti support. Give him the most annoying, busted ability, but make it work only if a Frog is summoned. Something like: If a Frog monster is summoned to the field, you can special summon this card from the hand, and if you do banish all Frog monsters from the field, both hands and graveyards and place a counter on this card for every card banished this way. You can only control one Frog the Jam. If this card would leave the field by one of your opponent's cards effect or tribute, you can remove one counter from this card, and if you do destroy that card and this card cannot leave the field for the rest of the phase you activated this effect. As long as this card is face up on the field, Frog monsters cannot be summoned. If you control Frog the Jam and draw a card, reveal it to your opponent, if it's a Frog monster, you have to banish it face down. This card gains 200 atk and def for each banished Frog monster. The effects of this card cannot be negated.

I think what makes the "Rancher" part of the name so weird is that...it's probably a direct translation error of "launcher", which in japanese is pronounced ランチャー or Ranchaa. So when localizing they probably overlooked it and thought it was "rancher".

Well in the old days, the -trix suffix was used for women while the -tor suffix was used for men. Like a male pilot was an aviator and a female was an aviatrix, a male pit fighter was a gladiator and a female was a gladiatrix. As opposed to now where the -tor suffix is used for both and Trix is for kids.

Utopia was always weird to me too since hope and utopia weren't exactly synonyms and a card called "Hope" doesn't seem like that strange of a concept. I saw the Zexal anime subbed, so when Yuma called it Hope, I was like "wait, Utopia is just an English thing?"

@@mayayamato7351 It's because in Japanese, Utopia's name is "Kibo'o, Hopu": This full name would end up being translated as "Utopia", while "Hopu" as Utopic (for cards like Utopic Dragon and topic Zexal), so yes, Utopia is indeed part of both archetypes. For the Shark dude, "Hopu", which is the Japanise pronunciation of the English word "Hope" doesn't appear, but instead just the Japanese word for hope/wish.
As of why they decides to translate "King of Wishes, Hope" as "Utopia", well, that word can also be used to indicate a wish that is impossible to come true, which is appropriate, and another one, is that it is shorter and sounds more like an actual name.

The Death Toys archetype are called Frightful in English instead of Des Toys. Now you get a card like Toy Parade, which is always treated as a Frightful card, but it's only there because Frightful are part of the Toy archetype. Now imagine there is a spell or trap that searches Frightful Spell or Trap cards aka. Death Toy Cards. That card can't search Toy Parade because Toy Parade is not treated as a Death Toy card in Japanese.

and even when not said like demon, day-mon would still be better than die-mon.
It also explains why they used the term 'archfiend' a fiend is another term for a demonic or devilish creature, an archfiend is essentially a more powerful demon. So it basically saying it's the demon/daemon archtype without using the daemon word.

Fun fact in italian axe of despaire is called "ascia di distruzione" that in english means "axe of destruction" i dont know what Konami did but they sure successfully failed translating that card.
Also in the italian versione "hey! Turnade" was called "ritorno totale" that means "total return" after the change its now called "Ehi! ritorno" that CAN mean "ehi! i come back". I did not misspelled that wrong "hey" is written "ehi" and "ritorno" means "i come back" or "he/she/it come back" in the italian version. So our last versione is grammatically wrong.

for the launcher issue we might be seeing a case of translation error because a common issue is that there is no L sound in Japanese -so they usually use an R sound replace the L in lancher with an R and you have Rancher what if its a case of someone was translating names and mixed something. They wrote down on their notes buster would be substituted for this word but they translated the word as rancher and who ever actually put it in saw buster rancher, and didn't pay attention to what they were doing and when ya thats fine.
Yeah, in Japanese it would sound like you were saying launcher.
I think we really dodged a bullet there. We could have had, "Rauncher" and that would have been so much worse than any other translation they could have come up with.
@@BlueSparxLPs still even back in the day when the card came out i never used it as i couldn't figure out what to do with it getting a 2500 point boost is ok but it doesn't really help you when you have to put it on a monster of 1000 or less attack and only works against things with 2500 or more points, unless you play a gravity bind deck or something else but even then not really useful, as it was faster to bull rush the enemy

So Black Skull Dragon could have been B. Skull D. where all three words in its name had localization inconsistencies.
Red-eyes Black Chick got the same treatment that Frog the Jam did, it was excluded from Red-eyes Black Dragon (despite being the Kaibaman for Red-eyes decks) in several card effects, then got it's name change to Black Dragon's Chic
Some potential uses for Frog the Jam:
Use Rescue Otter in conjunction with Traffic Ghost to special summon 3 Frog the Jams, and then you can go into either a Link Summon or Xyz Summon, or special summon a creature that can be special summoned with three tributes.
You can use a similar tactic with Rescue Rabbit.
You can also do something similar with Unexpected Dai or Double Summon.
Alternatively, you can run exactly one copy of Frog the Jam just to throw your opponent off by why you would be running such a card.

Nice vid. A few thoughts:
• What's really baffling is they somehow mistransliterated tornado into trunade when the card's Japanese name wasn't even torunedo, it was harikēn (hurricane)
• What I always found the weirdest (besides Trunade) is that English cards often used Japanese words in their names when the original Japanese cards had English words in their names, as if the fact that the card used a foreign language was something they needed to preserve in translation. E.g. Hitotsu-Me Giant (jp for "one-eye") had as its original Japanese name "Saikuropusu" (cyclops, an English word). And Dokuroyaiba (jp for "skull blade") had Būmeran (boomerang) in its Japanese name.
• Non-English western translations can get bad translations as a result of translating twice, first from jp, then from English. E.g. in both jp and English, Treeborn frog's name is a pun on a frog being revived. But, in all the other western languages, they took the wrong part of the English name and just called it tree frog, completely missing that the point is it being revived.

Both kaeru and gaeru mean frog, the k just sometimes becomes a g when there's another word in front of it. The jp word for toad is hikigaeru (the jp name of poison-draw frog). English yugioh just uses toad for kaeru cards to keep frog support from applying to them.

Nice edits as always, that takes a long effort to research, compile and do the mix and matches with cards and screenshots. Next time you could cover censored names in other languages. What makes Beast of Talwar even more ridiculous is that they made the same localization for Gilfer Daemon. First it was translated as Beast of Gilfer in the TCG, but with the renaming of old cards to make them part of their respective archetype, it's now named Archfiend of Gilfer. Why Konami didn't feel it necessary to do the same for Beast of Talwar we will never know I guess

As a person who watched the Japanese sub before getting properly into the game it's difficult to get used to the English names, especially when it comes to the Hero monsters, I always call Avian, Featherman.
Personally I say "Featherman because I prefer the original SUBBED version and dont want to support companiers like 4kid$.
I never knew the term "retrain" came from Obnoxious Celtic Guard's Japanese name, that's really cool!
Also, if they had to errata Frog the Jam's name, I am shocked and appalled they didn't go with the wonderful pun Toad Jam. It was right there, guys!

In a weird way, I think their types actually DO make some sense. Oppressed People is aqua type, likely in reference to their blood, sweat and tears that they are being forced to endure in their current state. People Running About is pyro type because the chaos is spreading like a wildfire. Underrated Destiny HERO change (because it didn't happen that often) was changing "Guy" to "Dude" which actually gave a bigger D motif but it was only used on Diamond and Double Dudes. I think the weirdest Destiny HERO change was Captain Tenacious, which was made just because SOMEONE in charge of GX's localization was such a huge fan of Tenacious D that they even referenced it in the actual show.
Beast of Talwar is named as such because he wields tulwars. A type of sword.
Celestial Sword - Eatos is actually a screwup on the Japanese's part caused by them not checking the localization of EN cards. Because the Noble Knights and Noble Arms were TCG exclusives, when originally printed they did not have cards like Noble Knight Joan or Celestial Sword - Eatos in mind, and only when the OCG called them "Holy Knight" and "Holy Sword" did they have to retroactively change card names in English.
Gazelle is particularly strange in that the only Phantom Beast cards ever made were made after Gazelle and they could have just called the archetype "Mythical Beast". Yeah it would, much later, make the odd sounding "Mecha Mythical Beast" but it's less weird than a forced errata on a Normal Monster.
I wanted Frog the Jam to get renamed to Toad Jam to fix the archetype issue. And if a Jam or Slime archetype was made and the card would need to be renamed again that would only increase the meme value of the card.

"Desu" is actually a pun. It can mean both the English word "death", or it can be tacked on to the end of a sentence to mean "it is", which is basically a way of making it more formal.

It's actually censored. They colored the gun in those bright neon color to attempt to cover up that it was just a normal gun in the original version

Love it! I've always thought Tekken deserved a rep for how it helped popularize fighting games with its various iterations. Kazuya is a more interesting protagonist than Jin imo, so I prefer him, but I may have chosen Heihachi over all of them since his has a bit more of an iconic design with that hair and gi.
