When Kaiba "envokes the Mystical Elf", he activated a trap card called "Gift of the Mystical Elf", which is a real card that restores your LP by 300 for every monster on the field. Since Yugi was the only one with a monster on the field, Kaiba only gained 300, so in a rare case, not only did Kaiba activate a real card properlly, the card actually functioned as intended in the real card game.

Basically there’s a single card beside your deck that can be drawn instead of your from your deck but in order to do so you have to yell I believe in the heart of the cards
Fun fact: duelist kingdom goes by the Junior rules from the OCG. Those rules never got overseas for the TCG. Summoning once per turn with no tributes needed for 5 star+ monsters. You can either set one spell/trap card or activate one per turn. Thanks MBT

This is fair, but they also had some random bullshit, like attacking random field objects, bonuses for terrain or for being “flying monsters”. Just weird shit that makes for a good children’s anime, but is dumb for a structured card game.

The manga originally was meant to be about different games. The card game in the manga got too popular, thus it kinda took over the whole series. The "season 0" anime was meant to cover the early manga format of villains of the week/new games of the week.
The DM anime was made afterwards with the intention to animate everything after "season 0" aka anything after the early manga. Thus DM anime was always about the card games and never shifted the story focus after season 1. In fact, the DM anime season 1 didn't air until 2000, while the manga ran from 1996 to 2004. Thus it's obvious the anime didn't shift focus after season 1, when half the manga was published by 2000.
Yu-Gi-Oh Squid Game is just literally the original manga.

Whenever one person says "My monster, attack!" and the other also announces their monster attacks, that's just because those are the two monsters doing battle. It's consistent across basically the whole anime, it's still the turn player's battle phase.

Ultra nerd here, duelist kingdom had its own special ruleset, including summons without tributes, special card and field environment abilities, and of course spells can be played during either battle phase, no restrictions like having to be on the field, having to be face up, or even using them from the hand; thanks for coming to my ted talk

I really like how the slow moving in place text looks but I can’t imagine doing a whole video by key framing each one. Yeah, Pegasus' tournament had unique rules unlike other games. Originally, there were no "levels" the stars were the card's rarity. But Kaiba made his own rules, and everyonensorta was like, "Yeah, these rules are better" (as they're considered "Pro Duelist Rules")

Actually spell cards and traps can be played at any time during your opponents turn, so while the show makes it look goofy as hell, its actually a legit move
Maybe legit in Duelist Kingdom where the established rules didn't exist yet, but any time after that would be cheating.
Traps can be played during your opponents turn but only Quick-Play Spells can be activated whenever during an opponent's turn (Unless the text says otherwise) so Polymerization wouldn't work
They also couldn't be used from the hand unless by another card effect as they would need to be set beforehand during your turn

That's because of the old meta when the game was slower as there were less ways to get around them, so most traps are now too slow and not worth using as a result in current meta if they can't negate and activate from the hand.

I would like to clarify what yugi did at 2:30, Weevil attacked feral imp and since battles involve both sides doing some sort of attack, the sequence made sense. This happens many a time in the yugioh franchise, the characters just don't tell their monster to attack in the later occurrences.
Of course I walk around packing heat: if I duel someone, I'll be sending the guy to the Shadow Realm one way or another.

to be fair the burning lands working on the forest would technically work with the way the anime laid the rules out cause burning lands destroys field spells and during these duels the area you were in is technically a field spell
