    Has harbor freight improved the quality of tools or marketing?

    The only Snap On tools I regret buying are the ones I didn't need. Harbor Freight tools? Tons. Especially pullers, for your own safety, don't use HF gear pullers.

    I love snap on but no doubt their prices are going to cost them more business than any of their competitors. Some people just grow to hate the brand BC their prices are Absurd

    Agreed, CP; there's a time when the Snap-On, Wright, or other pro grade tools are the sound investment for a professional tech. For those of us who are weekend warriors those times are less frequent than those for the pro, but both the pro and hobbyist benefit from the availability of good, less expensive tools. The trouble is identifying those tools, and not through trial and error. There is a channel on YT, "Jeff's Garage Adventures" which cuts through the crap and separates the good from the mediocre and outright junk; it's worth a view.

      I'm a diyer/weekend warrior, and I buy quality tools. Snap-On, Wright, Proto, etc. I only ever walk into HF if I am in a bind, need a specific tool "right now" for a specific job, then I'll go to HF and/or Northern Tool, buy that specific tool, and get the job done. IF I ever pull that tool out again for another job, then I will buy a quality replacement and the HF tool gets thrown into the "overflow" bin.

    Good job. I'm a Diesel Instructor and I tell every student I have if they are new to the field to get the best value you can in tools but not to put yourself in a ton of debt. Get the best you can afford and then later if you want that shiny wrench set off the tool truck then go ahead,lol. I like good tools as well but I'm not gonna break my piggy bank either. My boxes and tools are paid for and it's staying that way lol.

    For me Snap On and MAC is an investment, I am using tools that my Grandfather and Father, held used and taught me with, I am now teaching my son and one day he will own four (4) generations of tools. The most important thing is time, as you stated, the down time of broken tools and lost productivity cost us in the shop. The tool truck coming to the shop saves me time when I do need a warranty. For the last three to four years, I have only purchased a Knipex rebrand from MAC and MATCO, still using my Snap On talon grips, etc. But the Knipex are just better with a warranty if needed. Nice review and discussion. How much longer until member monthly support returns?

  • @SlimPickins_07
    @SlimPickins_07 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

    It will be interesting to see if the tool truck brands lose a bit of popularity in the coming years. I own plenty of Snap-On and Matco stuff, and it's great, but there are so many tools that are nearly the same quality for 1/5 the price. That wasn't really a thing back when I was buying tools, so if you wanted good, you bought off the truck.

  • @jessenewsom

    I own a small trucking company, and my nearest harbor freight is 90 miles away. So i have some use for harbor freight tools, i wont buy sockets or wrenches or Sockets. I use hammers, jacks air tools except impacts. The only icon sockets i found work well are impact sockets

    I have a HF around fhe corner but i choose to buy from my Matco Dealer who is also my neighbor. I buy tools from him because i like him and hes been there for me when i need something for a job. I have other tools as well i have bought in amazon and Home Depot. To each their own, been a professional Ford Mechanic 4 years now since transitioning from the IT and Medical field.

    Ya. I've got a set of B&W speakers that now retail for $16,000. If you don't spend at least that, the music you think you are hearing, is just your imagination. These arguments can go on forever and so stupid. Some people prioritize different things, it does mean they are useless.

  • @aaadamt964
    @aaadamt964 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    I used to be a harbor freight fan but they've priced themselves too close or even more than known quality brands. The knipex comparison is a prime example. My brother was looking at ratcheting wrenches awhile back. Icon was twice the price of gearwrench, had 2 less wrenches and horrible backdrag. I'd be interested in a few icon tools if they were 20% more than Pittsburgh but they're not.

  • @KosmicHRTRacingTeam
    @KosmicHRTRacingTeam 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

    Haha. So your saying they no one should be cheaper tools Only Snap On or alike? Part of that is because Harbor Freight copies Snap On. The irony of this is that I just watched a video the other day of about 12 different legit tool brands version of the Knipex cobra vs the OG cobra. So ALL of those brands suck too. Oh, and Snap on has their own version as well. Just like it has their own version of an "adjustable wrench" (crescent) and "Adjustable groove joint pliers" (channel locks) and the list goes on. In fact I'd bet snap on has "copied" way more tools than they have invented. Does icon flat out copy many brands? Yep!!! But snap on isn't exactly as innovative as your claiming. At any rate, it's pretty ignorant to think that DIYers and hobbyists should be buying $200 snap on ratchets. The other irony here is that I know a lot of mechanics and yes, most of them use High end tools at work, but the irony is, ask them what they use at home on their own cars and the cars on people they love the most!!!! I know, crazy. You can actually turn a fastener with a foreign made tool that costs dramatically less.

    The one snap on regret I have is the big 1/2 inch impact don't get me wrong it works alright but it was a lot of money and I could have went Milwaukee or DeWalt and saved a couple hundred bucks I do like the 3/8 14.4 stuff but the 1/2 inch I would do over if possible

  • @Gooch072
    @Gooch072 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    One way to get better bang for your buck, is understanding that a lot of tools that are branded Snap-On came from someone else already making quality tools, find out who is making them for Snap-On and buy there brand instead, you end up with literly the same tool and you don't have to pay the Snap-On tax.

  • @jasonwebb2335
    @jasonwebb2335 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    100% correct. My Dad is a retired mechanic after 40 yrs. Almost everything he owns is snap on or matco. Those tools are an investment that 40 yrs down the road still hold there value, like buying a Honda or Toyota. Nothing saying that if you buy a cheaper more affordable car or tool it won't last and give you a long life. There's tools for everyone out there. I'm a weekend warrior I fix most of my own stuff but I don't use these tools everyday so for me the harbor freight or any other tool will probably last me a very long time. The bottom line like I think you are saying is if you like a tool manufacturer and they work for you than that should be all that matters. Who cares what everyone else thinks.

    Warra ty is important, but bot as important as being able to buy singles to replace lost stuff. A lot of the newer brands seem to have plenty of decent stuff, but i need to know i can repalce something I lost or damaged 10 or 15 years down the road.

    I'm a carpenter not a mechanic. HF doesn't make tools with comparable features to top end carpenter tools. What they do is deliver a solid, basic, entry-level set of tools that will serve you well. I do catch hell for running HF dust collection because it's 1/3 the price and DOES do the same job just as well as others.

I used some Harbor Freight tools that I purchased from that man years ago. The one thing you're not going to have is a relationship with the brick and mortar store. Now with the tool truck dealer. I've been blessed. I've had the best when I had problems in life. I've had my dealer when I owe him money offer me money offer to help me out. Try that in a brick and mortar store I can go on and on for days man. Moral of the story and your Oriental voice no. Ticky no laundry Thanks for what you do. CP

    I appreciate your videos. I agree doing your homework finding deals harbor fright does have some good stuff not all but yes some good and if someone is starting off in the mechanics business then they can get by with some harbor fright stuff not all and everything we buy has gemics and glitches they do talk about the warranty online and can deny a warranty if they chose so but yes save money and not just buy buy buy. Dually noted. I'm not a mechanic but I do most of my own repairs a arm's bushings axles tierods wheel bearing very minimal tools at my disposal and a mix of crap but sometimes we are capable of doing things with out big expenses snap-on I just got the quinn master socket sets and not totally satisfied with craftsman ship but they are nice and work good but I'm older and am going to get capri nice tools alot cheaper than snap-on but great quality. Not much more than the quinn master socket sets . No skips.

    The HFT fans are the loudest. I do shop there for some things, but GD I'd never talk trash on Snap-On; I have limited Snap-On but what I do have, have been flawless for over 20 years like you ZERO Regrets on those purchases. And the comment that HFT has come a long ways is a little bit of a BS statement, I have a Goodyear airhose that I bought at HFT ~20 years ago, it's still OK, I needed a longer airhose 3-4 years ago for my home garage and bought the Diablo at HFT and it's JUNK already dry rotted, just TRASH and a waste of money. Sure an ICON Wrench might be better than the shittsburg made in India of old, BUT I'm not buying any ICON EVER when I can get FACOM wrenches for about the same price! I think the 3/8 comfort grip Stahwille ratchet I bought was only $10 more the ICON. My kid will probably use that Stahwille decades from now, while the ICON would have been scrapped.

    Our quality of life is 100% impacted by the quality of the products we use. I tow a 15k-20k tractor weekly. When I FINALLY upgraded to a Cummins diesel with a real exhaust brake I started enjoying longer distance hauls with zero white knuckling. I'll never go back to a gasser to save money. Once you upgrade to Snap On tools you'll experience similar superior quality and performance (as the Cummins) and you'll never look back to hObO fR3iGHt. Until you've used a product to make a living you can't develop an informed opinion.

    CP, great video. Thank you for educating individuals on buying quality tools. You have helped out so many people by sharing your knowledge and experience on tool purchases. I’ve seen HF tools break on light/regular use. I’ve bought some tools because I didn’t feel the need to buy more expensive tools. Some HF tools work fine for DIY individuals but there comes a time when you know you need to upgrade! I have never used a tool truck tool because I don’t have access to one. Tool truck tools have their place! Those are quality tools for professionals that do hard and dangerous work. Having the right tool can make all of the difference. As a mom, I would recommend any mechanic to seriously consider quality tools because I’ve witnessed a young man get seriously hurt from a cheaper tool snapping. He seriously injured his hand and wrist. I understand that not everyone wants to pay lots of money for tools but you have to ask yourself what your safety and life are worth? That young man now wished he purchased quality tools because he now has a lifelong hand injury. Regardless of where you buy your tools please use common sense and stay safe. We moms worry about you!
