If they do indeed make Chopper a Muppet, they should also make a running gag where someone says he looks like a puppet/toy to which he tearfully responds with “I’m not a puppet! I’m a reindeer”. It would be a funny ironic joke that would also do a bit of lamp shading
Adaptations don't have to be accurate, but they do have to be TRUE. True to the spirit and soul of the source material, without flinching, without apology.

Honestly the moment that had me keeling over with laughter was when they were on their way to Syrup Village and Zoro tells Nami that “the toilet is leaking” before being told there was no toilet. Like that was exactly the kind of boneheaded idiocy I expected out of Zoro-both in the statement itself and the implications of it.
The stone faced delivery, and total lack of surprise and willingness to just accept that he probably peed somewhere he wasn't supposed to was so beautiful, and speaking of good God does his actor make me question my sexuality
Buggy failing upward into fancam fame with a new army of fan girls by not fault of his own is the most on brand thing to come out of the live action show.
Actually, what I like about the 'calling out your attack names' in the live action is the fact that whether the character does so or not is very in character. Like obviously it's in character for Luffy to do so, Zoro would be 'too cool' to do it, but guys like Usopp and Sanji would definitely be up for it too.
"All great fighters call out their finishing moves." Zoro canonically responds with a scoff and says that's lame. Subtle attention paid to the source material is so good. Even if Zoro starts doing it later on. I'd be okay if the live action didn't.
I think they probably did Zoro about as well as they could have in live action. His brain cell deficiency is present but so hilariously subtle that new fans might not spot it beneath his aura of supreme confidence.

You're absolutely right about spacing out the viewing experience. My husband, who didn't have much interest in watching the anime, loved the characters and the story and was super engaged. We watched one to two episodes a night, and he was always so stoked to watch the next episode. It was so fun seeing him try to predict what was going to happen :)

There are two good reason to cut out his attack names. 1: Many of them are puns. "Oni Giri" means "Demon Oath," but "Onigiri" is "rice ball." The joke is that Zoro is trying to come up with cool edgy names but they keep accidentally sounding silly. Doesn't translate well. 2: He's gotta hold a sword in his mouth bro, how's he supposed to talk?

I basically agree with your whole assessment. And the biggest thing about this show that makes it work? It's Iñaki Godoy. I just want to hug him. He just BLEEDS Luffy. The hardest thing about this show to get right was always going to be faithfully translating its VERY Shonen Jump lead into something people who are hesitant on the humor and over-the-top emotion of anime are gonna vibe with. Luffy needs to be dumb as a rock, but not so much that it becomes annoying, and also be emotionally intelligent and confident and innocently charming. And Godoy absolutely nailed adapting that characterization into a live-action, western style of performance.
The composers definitely deserve a lot of credit too. From the saxophonist going wild when the Merry pulls up to the Baratie to the Arlong's menacing trap beat theme they knocked it out of the ball park.
Yeah he really maximized his screen time. It was actually impressive, because I hate Helmheppo and Koby as characters. Just plain groan when they show up in a chapter.

I think one of the best relationships in this is the one between Garp and Coby. Garp genuinely wants to help Coby get better, and understands that his naivete will cause him to make mistakes. So, he sends him to do things that he knows he'll mess up, knowing that he'll mess up for the right reasons, and incorporating that into his plans. So, it's like he's using him, but he's not doing so maliciously, but to give Coby experience, both as a Marine and to show how the world works.
Garp was absolutely amazing in this. Its a different Garp, but not so different that he's unrecognizable from his manga counterpart. All the major qualities are there, but they're handling the nuance of his character differently for the live action and it works; and flows well with the manga accurate storylines being portrayed. They put a lot of care and attention into including Garp into East Blue.

You've the heart via Luffy, the brain cell via Nami, the teeth via Zorro, the nose from Usopp, the feets via Sanji, and the body via Tony-Tony. (That's the only characters I know of, I've dropped the manga years and years ago.)
I like that while they cut out the Don Krieg fight they still incorporated him to sell how strong Mihawk is to the audience and let Krieg use that cool concealed shoulder cannon he has. This is especially cool as Krieg gets just as excellent a costume as everyone else despite getting about 1 minute of screentime.
For future seasons I really really hope they do two things- 1. Keep Sanji sweet and Charming flirt instead of perv and simp. (whole mermade storyline was painful to read/watch) 2. MAKE CHOPPER A MUPPET.
Everyone in the fandom always keeps telling me that Sanji's unfortunate nature is cultural thing and since the show is clearly targeted more towards the western audience I'm sure they'll tone it down even more in the future since they probably don't want the media's focus on Sanji representing everything that was wrong with how 90s' shonen tended to treat its female cast. We're also talking about the same company that showed green light for plenty of projects that sacrificed their source material to push an agenda like the new direction Witcher is taking and that Cleopatra "documentary" so I'm sure they're more than happy ignore all the unfunny pervert gags from the series, even for just sake of appearing to be more progressive than they actually are. Honestly bigger worries are in the opposite side of the spectrum and I hope they don't try to make women in the show too girlbossy. It would be so redundant since Oda has already purposely avoided making them love interests for the men so it would feel so out of place if one of them went full Jasmin from Aladdin live action and started singing about what a strong and independent woman they are. But I know that there's gonna be some people who regardless eventually feel urge to do that and I hope that the crew has enough patience to sit them down and explain why that's not gonna work.
One of my favorite little moments is after Zoro's fight with Mihawk, Sanji's talking about his backstory with Zeff and Luffy's reaction is a surprisingly quiet "I'd eat both arms and legs to save Zoro's life." I was really not on board when the show was announced but by the end of the season, I'd take a bullet for Iñaki Godoy.
Honestly i really like this take on Zorro, simply because it feels like hes the straight guy in the gag, except the world itself is antithetic to straight-guyism so he keeps accidentally doing a goof while being absolutely convinced that nothing of the sort is happening
Yeah, his self-serious attempts at being edgy become entirely hilarious because he's a dumbass trying to be a cool guy in a world filled with nothing but goofballs. He's somehow funny in... reverse?
I love how on the surface Zoro seems like a straight-man, being all serious and stuff, but when it comes down it he’s just as on board as Luffy with all the stupid stuff he does. It’s especially great when contrasted to Usopp because he seems like a goofy character, but when Luffy and Zoro actually go off to do something stupid and he’s the one begging them to stop- Excellent reversed expectations!
I enjoyed how they did this with both Nami and Zoro, both of them are much less "anime" (for lack of a better term) than their source material counterparts, but in a way that creates a fun contrast between the "stoic Western action movie badass" personas they put on and Luffy's relentless optimistic anime protagonist energy. It also enhances the character growth as we see them lighten up and begin to embrace the fun cartoon world Luffy operates in, while Luffy slowly comes to see the harsh reality that they (Nami in particular) have lived under and, while not succumbing to it, work to fight against it.

Both Zoro and Nami read as the kind of characters that take themselves and their surroundings very seriously (At least in the beginning) simply because a) that was the mindset they grew up in and b) they are the kind of characters that have loads of insecurities that they bury under that specific "stoic" persona that theyve adapted for themselves. Slowly growing out of that and being able to be dumb and goofy and recognise that yes, what i just did / what just happened was 15 different shades of ridiculous feels earned, because it stops being " At any point in time this can and will turn exceedingly dangerous" and more "I can laugh about this because i sincerely believe that i will be fine regardless", if that makes sense
The problem I had is that it seemed like they were incorporating Trafalgar Law into Zoro's character. But there's practically no chance of seeing Law in the said dynamic with Luffy and straw hats in Live action so i guess it works.

one good thing about real props that people tend to forget is that it makes the acting better. The actors aren't looking at some weird green slurry of things and told to pretend it's something scary/cool/emotional. They are actually looking at the "real" thing
It really is telling when you compare the adaptations of One Piece and Cowboy Bebop. Both were made by the same studios. They both LOOK amazing, but it's the writing that makes or breaks. Oda was heavily involved in the creative process for the Netflix adaptation of his series, whereas Watanabe was pretty much ignored by the writing team. And it shows. There's a growing trend you see in a lot of writing teams for TV working with fantasy/comic/anime/game IP. The attitude is "oh, this is below us. We can do better" but then they fail to understand the characters, plot, lore, themes, etc of the work they're adapting. The writers for the Witcher show actively mocked Sapkowski's work. Look how that turned out. But the One Piece team fully embraced Oda's world to make something distinct but faithful. I commend them for that.
Not too dissimilar to how video game adaptations are treated, going from the Paramount+ Halo show's contempt of the game canon (which unsurprisingly came back to bite them) to the Super Mario Bros movie being lovingly crafted by people who grew up with the games, even having Miyamoto and Koji Kondo involved to great success.
That is by no means a "growing trend". Look at the first Mario movie, or Fantastic Four. Some high up exec goes to buy the rights for an IP, throws it at someone they know to direct it, and no one involved really gives a shit about the IP, so it tanks, hard.
With all the attention they're calling to it I have no doubt that's going to be a character development moment and Luffy, Usopp, and Sanji are all going to react in fun ways. I anticipate a lot of "I told you so" energy from Sanji and a very enthusiastic "COOL!!!!!!" from Luffy lol.

You know what proved to me this is a great adaption? My wife actually seemed interested in the episode she watched with me and the kids. Normally she things most anime related stuff is dumb outside of Totoro and Ghibli. They definitely succeeded in getting the show right as well as bringing in people unfamiliar with the property. Also so glad to hear I'm not the only one that wants Chopper as a puppet.
The SH casting is so good but the first one that really clicked for me was Ussop! His expressions and the way he talked is just perfect! He really captured it~
My favorite visual gag was when Nami says there's only one kind of pirate and the crate around them falls away to show a literal circus of pirates twirling around, kills me every time XD
I recommended this to my parents on a whim. I thought they might like it, but expected them to just drop it after the first episode since it was still pretty goofy even by their standards. I was shocked when a week later they told me they finished it, and immediately asked when the second season was coming. They were even recommending it to their friends. I never thought I'd see the day, and if that is any indication, I think this adaptation has a very bright and successful future ahead.
I'm so happy for you unfortunately mine couldn't get past episode 4. I didn't have high hopes they see anything that is too goofy as childish and not worth their time. Well my dad at least. My mum will watch anything if it means spending time with her kids
Ironically Garp had some of the most anime moments in the whole show, whether it was rage-laughing at Luffy blowing up his ship’s mast or that MAGNIFICENT over the shoulder cape toss, the character may have been a bit bland but he was the character that got to jeep the show in its anime roots.
"The Justification for everyone ending up on the Going Merry seems to be just... Vibes?" I mean, Luffy kinda invited a tree, a unicorn and a skeleton in Thriller Bark and one of them ended up sticking around. It's fine if it starts with vibes.
When We Are finally played, I got so teary. The adaption earned that song, it earned my tears. It made me feel exactly the same as the original anime did as a child, thrilled, excited, powerful and unstoppable
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one. I’m 37 and have been on this one piece ride for 20 plus years and I literally cried man tears when it hit. There’s something in how earnestly this show adapts everything. And just to get it out there, all this talk about speed racer, where is the rurouni kenshin love, that’s my personal gold standard for adaptations. All 5 movies are incredible.

I will die on the hill that Live Action Garp is a positive for the show. They took Garp's canon attempts to make Luffy into a Marine and added so much to it while sticking true to the spirit of the character. Even if he's a bit more gruff and less easygoing, he embodies the contradiction of a Marine who believes in freedom while being more emotionally grounded. It's a way better intro than the cover story or W7, and if the show gets to Marineford, it will pay off mad dividends.
I definitely agree. Garp was seen as very serious in his cover series and it wasn't until after we meet him in Water 7 that we knew he was Luffy's grandpa. Him being rivals/friends with Roger and his entire inner conflict during Marineford with Ace will be so damn heart wrenching and emotionally impactful. Seeing that he totally would have tried to smash Luffy's dream because it was to be the Pirate King, the man he was there for at his execution so to say to save his life from that makes so much sense. And why when Luffy showed the tenacity he did in their end test Garp was able to have less reservations as he knew he wasn't gonna immediately be killed.
It makes even more sense when you realize Luffy left the exact day he turned 17 to be a pirate and left before Garp got there. Since he would have been on his way to Windmill Village to enlist Luffy in the marines so he wouldn’t have become a pirate.
I think his acting is sublime...it feels like an honest and earnest portrayal of a larger than life persona... but not so ridiculous as to undermine the character or feel unrealistic. He doesnt fade into the background despite there being plenty of big personality characters, but he doesn't come across as cringey or inauthentic. I never was a big fan of the original show... but I LOVE this Luffy.
And his acting and portrayal of the character will only get better as he gets more used to the role. He's acting in a language that isn't even his first and he's THAT good. It's seriously impressive

This is how much "We Are" means to me. I have NOT seen that adaptation, but as soon as I saw the Merry sailing, hearing the theme, and you saying this is the first time they played it, I genuinely got teary. I have been watching the epic of One Piece unfold since middle school and now I'm looking to buy a house. The Strawhats. have been with me for most of my life.
At this point, I’m convinced that Buggy is going to be the one to find One Piece given his ability to continually fail upwards, so I’m glad they nailed his live action character.
Considering it's so likely now that the One Piece is a pile of exposition and records next to a treasure pile Roger's crew left there, I wouldn't be surprised if Buggy gets this gigachad moment where he sees the information somehow but lets Luffy and Robin really dig in first because only one man truly DESERVES to be the Pirate King.
I was surprised how taken i was by Sanji, the heart eyes he gives Luffy. His smile and the dimples. Taz did such a great job and i will now forever swoon over him
Like he fixed my biggest Sanji gripe which is taking him from little smarmy, very flirty, romanticism driven, to over the top pervy, sometimes genuinely creepy behavior to women, and instead he’s just a man slut and I love that for him

Garp trying to stomp out his childrens dreams and not doing is literally why he hates Shanks, we he decides to train Koby specifically and why we get Marineford. Actually showing Garp trying and failing in real time instead of just giving up when Luffy became a Pirate is honestly something we should have seen in the manga considering Garp’s issue at Marineford.
Yeah I don't understand how it's out of character for Garp to try to crush luffys dream of being a pirate when he literally did the same thing in the manga when luffy was young.
It comes down to personal interpretation. Personally, it seemed like Garp never tried as hard to stop Luffy and Ace from being pirates as he could have. Yes, he yelled at them as kids, but he never brought them in for marine training or restrained them when he was absolutely capable of doing so. Even when he finds Luffy in Water 7, he initially says he just wanted to see him and will let the Strawhats go, and then, even when forced by Sengoku to pursue them, goes incredibly easy on them. He's very much all bark and no bite, showing actually a similarity to Luffy and Dragon, where all three are shown to ultimately respect other people's pursuits of their dreams, whatever they are.
Mihawk accepted the job because he already knew about Luffy from Shanks. He wanted to meet the kid Shanks kept talking about to see what the big deal was. It also explains his conversation with Garp about Luffy. Arlong didn't want anyone thinking they were better than him. Buggy played to that ego flaw and got him to go after Luffy by making him want to put Luffy in his place. He is very Kilmonger like.
It also adds to the entire purpose of the Warlords. I mean, they're SUPPOSED to have an agreement with the government but when have we ever seen the government call on them other than the absolutely insanely huge event like Marineford? It makes total sense that the super high ranking marines would be able to dial up a warlord and send them on a mission, that's supposed to be the agreement the marines have with them!
Also, Arlong knew that Nami was with whoever had the map, so when he learned that Luffy had the map, he also knew that Nami was now part of another pirate's crew. It wasn't just to retrieve the map, but also to retrieve Nami.

my only complaint was they didn't build miniatures to split krieg's ship and arlong park, they did such a good job of using camera tricks and practical effects wherever else possible (such a delightful surprise that my only complaint was a nitpick)
For Krieg, given his very reduced role, it makes sense they wouldn’t want to make a full physical ship only to destroy it, as there were no scenes of people acting on it. As for the Tower, I’m guessing they wanted to replicate how it was destroyed from the inside out. Particularly the massive amount of debris coming out of each floor. Not to mention seeing Arlong get slammed through each floor.
As a "netflix only" I really bought Usopp's back story. I feel like everyone really kind of grew to see the heart inside of him and like him. The whole crew has just really bought into Luffy's almost childlike glee and willingness to just get along and laugh with anyone who will give them the same, and Usopp fits into that dynamic like a hand into a glove.
I’ve never really liked usopp as a character in the anime until he became Sniper King and after the time skip, but this live action version made me actually love him
that's good because of all of the crew, Usopp's backstory* got altered the most *not really his entire backstory but there are some missing children who look like vegetables
It's ridiculously difficult to sell anime personalities in a live action thing and the actors did an incredible job! It never feels "real" but it's really set in the world and their performances are sincere enough to sell it
My dad has been watching the Netflix series, and he said episode 1 alone had him interested in checking out the original. I think that speaks volume of how much this adaptation does right.
Yes, and I agree with taking longer to release episodes, but it should have been bi-weekly, one Wednesday, and the other one Saturday, so you could technically watch it one Friday, and be on time for the Saturday release if you have busy week, but would still feel fresh enough, but leave enough time to truly digest the season of Live Action One Piece, while not feeling overwhelmed by the waiting time until the next episode drops.
@@Sammysapphira The issue with that comparison is those are all movies, that could devote more of their overall budget to those characters. The quality of this first season has given me enough faith in the show’s creators to figure out a solution, but it’s definitely going to be a challenge.

The fact that this live action adaptation made me hyped throughout the entire series despite already reading and watching the OG material is proof that they know what they were doing. Everyone's perfectly cast: I can't unhear Garp being Scottish, Usopp is perfect, and Inaki fit Luffy to a T! Honestly, I kind of like Arlong being the big bad of the arc, and the fact his theme is gangsta-like fits perfectly b/c that boy is straight up gangsta.
Hate Koby. Worst acting ever. Just fucking terrible, and it doesn't help I've always hated Koby in the anime too. Too bad the Commodore didn't just execute Koby. *Behead Koby. Roundhouse kick Koby into the island.*

As a non source material watcher, I have to say this show was such a great watch (specially with an anime watcher to fill me on the worldbuilding here and there) and still I got the feeling these characters were so well constructed and portrayed they had to be based on something VERY solid. I gotta say I didn't see enough love for Nami here, and for me the actress did such a good job at being the emotional core plot of the season. Yes, all the other characters had their vibes perfectly set, but Nami's arc is what made the season work as an arc for me, so many props to her!
It's even bonkers bc according to Rudd, the whole reason she became a One Piece fan when she was younger was because Nami's arc, specially the scene where Nami stabs her arm and ask for help finally. She explained how much pressure she put herself to play this scene bc she wanted to people feel the way she did back she saw it the first time herself.
tbh ty for pointing out Jacob's endearing performance of Usopp bc no offence to Early Usopp Enjoyers, but I Did Not Enjoy early Usopp in the manga but Jacob definitely managed to save him for me??? also got SO HYPE about the teeny tiny little detail of the crew barely making it out of the fog, the faint glow of neon in the distance, and Usopp being able to read the sign like "What's a ba-ra-ti-e?", and then an immediate cut showing said faint neon glow and us the viewers still unable to make out the actual letters. I definitely felt that was just another nod to the writers being Extremely Well-Versed in the source material as far as Usopp's keen observation haki goes 👀
The first season had a higher budget than any of the seasons of Game of Thrones. And that's going in purely untested with the potential that it could have flopped.

This adaptation succeeded in making people who literally will never watch anime (like my dad and others) invested in the show. Oda said in a note that this is probably the last chance he will get to bring One Piece into more of a mainstream audience. I say he and the entire cast and crew succeeded in that. Wonderful show love the pacing and set designs!

My only gripe with this is that yeah people who watch the live action as their first exposure to one piece will likely have fun with it, but they won't really see why people like the manga as much as they do. Like they won't know how much depth there is to the manga simply cuz the show doesn't rlly manage to capture that depth

Probably one of my favorite things with the live action one piece is that you can tell Luffy has a big smile on his face when he’s fighting. it just captures his character so well.
It's crazy that you point out how weird it is that Arlong came to see Buggy personally and it would have made more sense to just send his lieutenants because that's exactly what I was thinking when I first watched the scene. I saw Korobe show up and I was like "Oh, cool. Arlong sent him to deal with Buggy. That makes sense, it's a neat way to tie everything together" and then Arlong walked in and I was like "oh."
I started watching this, stopped, watched the entire 8 episodes, and came back. I gotta say, it's a solid 8/10. Far better than I expected. Even the fact that they greatly changed when certain characters appear and interact is actually pretty cool. This is still definitely One Piece and all of the key scenes are included, but they changed enough to justify watching this even if you've technically already seen it before. I'm all for Koby getting more screen time.
Since you brought it up, there was actually one thing I liked in the Netflix version better than the manga too: Merry actually dying. Naming the ship in the honor of Kaya's faithful servant, who died in an attempt on her life narrowly thwarted by the crew receiving the ship, kinda works better than him surviving (which also made Kuro look kind of incompetent) and giving them a ship that he named after himself, something that always struck me as a little tacky.
Yeah, the series could get a bit absurd with the "He's not actually dead!" revelations at times, after milking that "death" for as much drama as possible. Including a certain infamous case in the Alabasta arc. 😀

As an audio guy, the leitmotifs, music, and effects were a joy to watch out for in this show. We Are, as mentioned in this video did not play fully until the Straw hats had the Going Merry. You would only hear snippets of it on some moments, in the earlier episodes. That's an amazing way to build up on that music
I'm glad you gave Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black the credit he deserves. He was one of the best parts of the Cowboy Bebop adaptation. I truly believed I was seeing Jet Black on screen, and not some shoddy imitation.
Fun fact: in the show's Italian dub, Shanks is voiced by Renato Novara, Luffy's voice actor in the Italian dub of the anime, so they played a bit on the "passing of the hat" with that.

I like the serious tone of Zoro, because I think it will fade over time. I'm pretty sure what they are going for is that the bond of Zoro and Luffy results in some of that care-free attitude rubbing off on him.
That makes sense, as Zoro outright admits in episode 2 that Luffy's determination and care-free attitude is rubbing off on him: _"[I] don't have to [believe in Luffy]; he believes in himself. It rubs off."_
The casting is amazing, everybody is spot on, but man, Iñaki is just something else, he has so much charisma! I can't even count the amout of people I've seen who never cared about One Piece but were saying they would watch the show as soon as it dropped because of Iñaki.
I totally read Garp as chasing Luffy genuinely most of the series, out of both a sense of marine duty but also concern for his grandson. Then changing his mind after conversations with Zeff and Mihawk and Coby, and only then deciding to test Luffy with the fight to see if Luffy had any chance of making it. It's been so long since I read and watched the animanga so I don't really remember Garp's original character but I liked him how he was in the show.
The show Garp is easier to understand initially, but long term destroys his character. Its gonna be tricky, they are messing with parts of the story that have implications hundereds of chapters down the line. I just hope whatever changes they make remain consistent when adapting later storylines. But for a complete outsider? Sure, Garp seems like a legitimate badass. An actual persistent antagonist, but not evil.
YES. Muppet treasure Island is what this reminded me off. I had a feeling of familiarity when watching this but I didn't know why. I watched that movie religiously when I was a kid so a mention of that just made my day. It seems to have been forgotten by most.
Absolutely loved season 1! But i do hope they do 2 more episodes per season. Some of the more impactful moments felt like they didn't have enough time to breathe, in my opinion.
Next season would definitely benefit from 10 episodes instead of 8. I’m a little apprehensive since the show is so expensive, but hopefully they do it. Alabasta will be tough to cover without that extra time.
More episodes would be ideal, but considering the budget on this show I’m not sure that’s realistic to expect. I think Alabasta could be condensed into a 4-5 episode arc. Keep in mind that would be more than 2 full length feature films worth of story. If something like Dune could be covered in two movies, they should be able to tell this story in that amount of time as well.
They either need to do at least ten episodes or make Alabasta one whole season by itself, like Arlong Park it's a defining One Piece arc and muuuuch bigger so getting it right is so important.
Coby and Helmeppo receiving more screentime is easily my favourite part of the show and one of my few criticisms of the manga. Coby is presented as Luffy's rival and counterpart in Marines right from the start but he barely receives any time in limelight before Marineford and even post-timeskip those scenes are few and far between. In this adaptation they really look like they're gonna be rivals in the future, as they should and we're gonna get much better perspective on Marines. I suspect that originally was Oda's vision as well, but since the story is slow enough even as it is now, I'm sure he realized quite early on that he simply doesn't have enough time to flesh out both sides at the same time so he tried to pivot to more established Marine to be Luffy's Garp, eventually failing in that as well. Now we have unique opportunity to see what could have been if the format of weekly manga didn't didn't dictate the storytelling pace so much.
I don't think Koby is meant to be a rival, but I'm only on chapter 600 so maybe that changes. The point of Koby is to show early on that there are good marines and bad marines, just as there are good and bad pirates. Luffy is more like Koby's role model than his rival.

Oda never wanted the Garp plotline in the Live Action version, he fought against it but they kept it in anyways. I guarantee you it wasn't his "original" vision. Also, everyone else didn't like that plotline. And because of that feedback, the directors learned their lesson and promised to not put plotlines like that into the series :)
I hate who they casted as Koby. I hate Koby as a character. Wish the Commodore woulda just shot Koby. I get that the story needed some time to build Koby up as a protege. But. I mean. Who cares, just kill Koby off in Terrestrial Volvo and deal with the consequences.
I'm glad you mentioned the music in this show. Rarely does music in shows really grab me but the moment I heard the intro bit I went "Oooooooooh". Then after ep 1 I did some research and found out it was Sonya & Giona and ALL made sense suddenly. They did soundtrack in the 1st season of The Witcher and it's one of the very few things that adaptation ever nailed. And then I saw they invited other fantastic artists as guest musicians?! Marcin's guitar on all the Mihawk themes was just exquisite. And the Nami themed song with vocals from Aurora obliterated me emotionally. It's so beautiful. I broke replay button on my Spotify with this song.
Syrup Village was my favorite part of the season. I felt the episodes captured Kuro's terrifying nature perfectly, and I actually preferred the Straw Hats and Kaya running away from him because things felt much more claustrophobic in the mansion as opposed to outside like in the anime.
I think this portrayal of Garp actually makes a bit more sense if you think about it especially knowing what we know now. Not trying to make excuses or anything, but Garp desperately tried to beat wanting to be pirates out of Ace and Luffy. Both of them carrying the Will of D. and being born from prominent terrorists for lack of a better term, Garp KNEW that the government would stop at no end to have them both executed if they became pirates or were really even aware of their existence. But one way to be powerful and carry the Will Of D. without being hunted by the government is to become a marine like him and Saul. Garp doesn't want to see his grandchildren be executed, I think it makes sense for him to go to great lengths to make sure Luffy really knows what he's signing up for, it also plays into the troupe of parents having a hard time realizing that their kids are growing up. That's how I read it at least.
Yeah this makes Garp letting Luffy get to Ace in marineford much more tragic. His character arc would be like this: *Garp tries to stop Luffy from becoming a Pirate. *Understanding that he can't, he lets Luffy Follow his Dream *Gets proud that Luffy is achieving his dreams in brief intermission between some arcs *Ace gets Captured *Garp must now execute his adopted grandson *Luffy tries to save Ace *Garp must now choose between his Family and responsibility, deeply regretting his choice of letting them follow their dreams
Nope. This Garp is more like the most convinient form of his to move the plot forward. Garp playing Go and threatening/blackmailing someone is just plain weird. He would definitely punch 1st before asking questions. This is the man who walks through doors and accidentally reveals world shattering secrets to other people. He has accepted that Ace and Luffy would die under the Marines the moment they became pirates He has accepted that Luffy and Ace would be pirates way before the series started. He is closer to a "Go with the flow guy" instead of the one portrayed here. Hell, he is still laughing at luffy being targeted by two emperors of the sea and still calling him a kid.
@@forte609 Manga Garp and Liver Action Garp are not 1 to 1, None of these characters are obviously. Therefore I don't think garp's live action version takes a very large leap of logic knowing what we do now. He was also obviously still upset and pissed over the years that they became pirates. I'm just saying Garp trying a little harder to protect his grandson, doesn't seem weird to me. Another thing he does is have a marine in the East Blue that sin't a complete joke something both my bosses (People who have never watched or really even heard of the anime or manga) pointed out to me. Garp also spends the whole season trying his hardest to get Koby and Helmeppo to defy him, I also think they hint heavily at Garp not truthfully being upset with Luffy. Seems like he is using Luffy as a tool, to get Koby to stand up to Garp, to really drill in that the world isn't black and white. Marine and pirate is just a title. you can be a shithead marine like Axe-hand who's more akin to a ruthless pirate, and you can be a "filthy pirate" and have a heart of gold. Essentially the world isn't black and white and you can't just follow orders blindly.
Actually, Ace is Luffy's adopted brother, they aren't blood related. Also, the government was already trying to execute Ace since literally the day he was born because of who his biological father is.
The comparisons to Stephen Chou's work was apt. He truly proved that "live action cartoons" can work if you go all in on the stylized hyper-reality feel of the movie or show. Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin soccer were entertaining as hell. And also quite artistic in its execution. I haven't seen One Piece yet, but I will this weekend. As someone who has neither read the manga or watched the anime, I'll be going into this with a newbie's eyes.
I find it funny that the accident that killed Kuina is left vague in the live action, which to me shows that even the series' producers know how ridiculous it is that Kuina died from falling down a staircase.

That ultimately cheapens Zoro's backstory. Kuina being such a swordswomen prodigy was expected to at least become a great warrior, and thus meet her end like a warrior. For her to die so suddenly and anticlimactically makes her life unfulfilled, thus leading to Zoro shouldering the weight of her expectations. Kuina and Zoro promised to become great warriors with Zoro vowing to one day beat Kuina, but her sudden and drab death pulls the rug out from under Zoro. This is why I am so turned off by the changes to the story in Live Action, it cheapens everything and takes out the emotional weight.
So, about Hot Zoro... They've done a really good job at incorporating beats and jokes from waaaaaay in the future, in the early parts of the show. I think the Hot Zoro criticism is a good opportunity to take the Law gag (the moments where he totally cracks and acts goofy like the straw hats), and give it to zoro in season 2. This is kinda how zoro works anyways - he's usually cool but sometimes he cracks. He just doesn't have the gag where he catches himself breaking character. I think it could really work for live action zoro.
I think it could be his genuine seriousness and confidence to dumb bits like when he striked a pose against Mr 3 candle could work. Mackenyu out of character during their press tour/promotion recordings felt like early Zoro. They played the broken phone game and the only sentence they shouldn't mix up (One Piece is now streaming on Netflix) was delivered outloud by Mackenyu. He, confident, striked a pose and said "Netflix is now streaming on Netflix". He didn't notice his mistake, until Taz pointed it out and he was genuinely confused, even saying "I think I fucked it up?". Everyone busted laughing, Mackenyu yelling now the correct sentence. Other of my fav bits on him is cropping Taz's shadow when they anounced they are currently filming season 2, besides arguing with him about who is better (Sanji vs Zoro) on a "answering most common questions" video (arrogantly and smirking saying to Taz "look at the bounty").
I believe the Garp early introduction does wonders to keep a regular audience supremely hooked on the intriguing family dynamics and possible drama therein, so it'd actually feel extremely good, if the Mihawk, Zeff and Koby lessons he "Learned" through this season 1 would change him into being the more carefree character later on. His attitude for the first season is actually really important to be portrayed this way, because he's supposed to represent what is essentially a wall, the world government and Navy are supposed to be what rules the seas with an iron fist, and an unbending will, and with Axehand and Nezumi we get to see how it can also become corrupt, but Garp being the stoic wall of an iron fisted government official, as he is portrayed for the majority of the show, it has a very imposing effect when you know that they will be chasing the strawhats endlessly, and he won't have the cushion of it being his grandfather chasing him anymore (which we'll likely witness in Loguetown with Smoker next season).

Completely out of love for the story and hatred of spoilers. The manga is going to be running for several more years, you have time to catch up and then watch all the theory crafting videos. wont lie, love how buggy turned from legiut terrifying to perfect comedy. so much about this live action is such a great breath of fresh air. i couldnt help form binging it and the first season was always the weakest imo so i look forward to whats next (you know after the strike is HOPEFULLY settled in writers favor)
Taz learned how to cook, regularly cooked for the entire cast and crew, and became a fucking black belt for his role as Sanji. Mackenyu trained and strengthened his jaw muscles to hold a sword in his mouth to prepare for the audition. The fucking AUDITION. Rudd is a massive weeb, and regularly pretended to be a navigator when she was a kid. Jacob and Iñaki are just straight-up their characters. Every member of the main cast were either born for, or put in an admirable amount of effort for these roles.
More dedication than 99.9% of MOVIE actors imo, let alone a Netflix series. The actors are having fun too, and that really shows and makes such a difference.
The best thing the live action did is affirm us Buggy fans. He’s finally the sexyman he was always meant to be.

If they do indeed make Chopper a Muppet, they should also make a running gag where someone says he looks like a puppet/toy to which he tearfully responds with “I’m not a puppet! I’m a reindeer”. It would be a funny ironic joke that would also do a bit of lamp shading
The tanuki joke may not work for a well made reindeer muppet, but if they say he's a puppet or a taxidermy or a costume, that'd be hilarious.

Honestly the moment that had me keeling over with laughter was when they were on their way to Syrup Village and Zoro tells Nami that “the toilet is leaking” before being told there was no toilet. Like that was exactly the kind of boneheaded idiocy I expected out of Zoro-both in the statement itself and the implications of it.

Actually, what I like about the 'calling out your attack names' in the live action is the fact that whether the character does so or not is very in character. Like obviously it's in character for Luffy to do so, Zoro would be 'too cool' to do it, but guys like Usopp and Sanji would definitely be up for it too.
That, and OPLA Zoro has a wholeass sword handle in his mouth. Nobody's going to hear 'ONIGIRI' over that death grip those chompers have on that hilt
"All great fighters call out their finishing moves." Zoro canonically responds with a scoff and says that's lame. Subtle attention paid to the source material is so good. Even if Zoro starts doing it later on. I'd be okay if the live action didn't.

You're absolutely right about spacing out the viewing experience. My husband, who didn't have much interest in watching the anime, loved the characters and the story and was super engaged. We watched one to two episodes a night, and he was always so stoked to watch the next episode. It was so fun seeing him try to predict what was going to happen :)

There are two good reason to cut out his attack names.
1: Many of them are puns. "Oni Giri" means "Demon Oath," but "Onigiri" is "rice ball." The joke is that Zoro is trying to come up with cool edgy names but they keep accidentally sounding silly. Doesn't translate well.
2: He's gotta hold a sword in his mouth bro, how's he supposed to talk?

I basically agree with your whole assessment. And the biggest thing about this show that makes it work? It's Iñaki Godoy. I just want to hug him. He just BLEEDS Luffy. The hardest thing about this show to get right was always going to be faithfully translating its VERY Shonen Jump lead into something people who are hesitant on the humor and over-the-top emotion of anime are gonna vibe with. Luffy needs to be dumb as a rock, but not so much that it becomes annoying, and also be emotionally intelligent and confident and innocently charming. And Godoy absolutely nailed adapting that characterization into a live-action, western style of performance.
The composers definitely deserve a lot of credit too. From the saxophonist going wild when the Merry pulls up to the Baratie to the Arlong's menacing trap beat theme they knocked it out of the ball park.
Mihawk's flamenco-inspired leitmotif was also *chef's kiss*.

Yeah he really maximized his screen time. It was actually impressive, because I hate Helmheppo and Koby as characters. Just plain groan when they show up in a chapter.

I think one of the best relationships in this is the one between Garp and Coby. Garp genuinely wants to help Coby get better, and understands that his naivete will cause him to make mistakes. So, he sends him to do things that he knows he'll mess up, knowing that he'll mess up for the right reasons, and incorporating that into his plans. So, it's like he's using him, but he's not doing so maliciously, but to give Coby experience, both as a Marine and to show how the world works.
Garp was absolutely amazing in this.
Its a different Garp, but not so different that he's unrecognizable from his manga counterpart. All the major qualities are there, but they're handling the nuance of his character differently for the live action and it works; and flows well with the manga accurate storylines being portrayed.
They put a lot of care and attention into including Garp into East Blue.
This was the one part of Garp that truly felt like him for the series

I like that while they cut out the Don Krieg fight they still incorporated him to sell how strong Mihawk is to the audience and let Krieg use that cool concealed shoulder cannon he has.
This is especially cool as Krieg gets just as excellent a costume as everyone else despite getting about 1 minute of screentime.
For future seasons I really really hope they do two things-
1. Keep Sanji sweet and Charming flirt instead of perv and simp. (whole mermade storyline was painful to read/watch)
2. MAKE CHOPPER A MUPPET.

Everyone in the fandom always keeps telling me that Sanji's unfortunate nature is cultural thing and since the show is clearly targeted more towards the western audience I'm sure they'll tone it down even more in the future since they probably don't want the media's focus on Sanji representing everything that was wrong with how 90s' shonen tended to treat its female cast. We're also talking about the same company that showed green light for plenty of projects that sacrificed their source material to push an agenda like the new direction Witcher is taking and that Cleopatra "documentary" so I'm sure they're more than happy ignore all the unfunny pervert gags from the series, even for just sake of appearing to be more progressive than they actually are.
Honestly bigger worries are in the opposite side of the spectrum and I hope they don't try to make women in the show too girlbossy. It would be so redundant since Oda has already purposely avoided making them love interests for the men so it would feel so out of place if one of them went full Jasmin from Aladdin live action and started singing about what a strong and independent woman they are. But I know that there's gonna be some people who regardless eventually feel urge to do that and I hope that the crew has enough patience to sit them down and explain why that's not gonna work.

One of my favorite little moments is after Zoro's fight with Mihawk, Sanji's talking about his backstory with Zeff and Luffy's reaction is a surprisingly quiet "I'd eat both arms and legs to save Zoro's life."
I was really not on board when the show was announced but by the end of the season, I'd take a bullet for Iñaki Godoy.

Honestly i really like this take on Zorro, simply because it feels like hes the straight guy in the gag, except the world itself is antithetic to straight-guyism so he keeps accidentally doing a goof while being absolutely convinced that nothing of the sort is happening

I love how on the surface Zoro seems like a straight-man, being all serious and stuff, but when it comes down it he’s just as on board as Luffy with all the stupid stuff he does. It’s especially great when contrasted to Usopp because he seems like a goofy character, but when Luffy and Zoro actually go off to do something stupid and he’s the one begging them to stop- Excellent reversed expectations!
I enjoyed how they did this with both Nami and Zoro, both of them are much less "anime" (for lack of a better term) than their source material counterparts, but in a way that creates a fun contrast between the "stoic Western action movie badass" personas they put on and Luffy's relentless optimistic anime protagonist energy. It also enhances the character growth as we see them lighten up and begin to embrace the fun cartoon world Luffy operates in, while Luffy slowly comes to see the harsh reality that they (Nami in particular) have lived under and, while not succumbing to it, work to fight against it.

Slowly growing out of that and being able to be dumb and goofy and recognise that yes, what i just did / what just happened was 15 different shades of ridiculous feels earned, because it stops being " At any point in time this can and will turn exceedingly dangerous" and more "I can laugh about this because i sincerely believe that i will be fine regardless", if that makes sense
The problem I had is that it seemed like they were incorporating Trafalgar Law into Zoro's character. But there's practically no chance of seeing Law in the said dynamic with Luffy and straw hats in Live action so i guess it works.
Iñaki’s desire for everyone and their grandma to know about One Piece has come true. An amazing number of people of all ages who have no experience with the manga/anime, and even people who don’t know this even IS an adaptation of a manga, are getting into this.

one good thing about real props that people tend to forget is that it makes the acting better. The actors aren't looking at some weird green slurry of things and told to pretend it's something scary/cool/emotional. They are actually looking at the "real" thing
It really is telling when you compare the adaptations of One Piece and Cowboy Bebop.
Both were made by the same studios. They both LOOK amazing, but it's the writing that makes or breaks. Oda was heavily involved in the creative process for the Netflix adaptation of his series, whereas Watanabe was pretty much ignored by the writing team. And it shows.
There's a growing trend you see in a lot of writing teams for TV working with fantasy/comic/anime/game IP. The attitude is "oh, this is below us. We can do better" but then they fail to understand the characters, plot, lore, themes, etc of the work they're adapting.
The writers for the Witcher show actively mocked Sapkowski's work. Look how that turned out.
But the One Piece team fully embraced Oda's world to make something distinct but faithful. I commend them for that.
Not too dissimilar to how video game adaptations are treated, going from the Paramount+ Halo show's contempt of the game canon (which unsurprisingly came back to bite them) to the Super Mario Bros movie being lovingly crafted by people who grew up with the games, even having Miyamoto and Koji Kondo involved to great success.
That is by no means a "growing trend". Look at the first Mario movie, or Fantastic Four. Some high up exec goes to buy the rights for an IP, throws it at someone they know to direct it, and no one involved really gives a shit about the IP, so it tanks, hard.
Oda is also "involved" in a lot of the movies. I wont exactly call them good.

I gotta say as a manga/anime viewer what surprised me most about about the live actions was how much it made me like Helmeppo
You know what proved to me this is a great adaption? My wife actually seemed interested in the episode she watched with me and the kids. Normally she things most anime related stuff is dumb outside of Totoro and Ghibli. They definitely succeeded in getting the show right as well as bringing in people unfamiliar with the property.
Also so glad to hear I'm not the only one that wants Chopper as a puppet.
The SH casting is so good but the first one that really clicked for me was Ussop! His expressions and the way he talked is just perfect! He really captured it~
I really think Usopp captured his character the best of all the actors, although I love them all!
My favorite visual gag was when Nami says there's only one kind of pirate and the crate around them falls away to show a literal circus of pirates twirling around, kills me every time XD

I recommended this to my parents on a whim. I thought they might like it, but expected them to just drop it after the first episode since it was still pretty goofy even by their standards. I was shocked when a week later they told me they finished it, and immediately asked when the second season was coming. They were even recommending it to their friends. I never thought I'd see the day, and if that is any indication, I think this adaptation has a very bright and successful future ahead.

Ironically Garp had some of the most anime moments in the whole show, whether it was rage-laughing at Luffy blowing up his ship’s mast or that MAGNIFICENT over the shoulder cape toss, the character may have been a bit bland but he was the character that got to jeep the show in its anime roots.

When We Are finally played, I got so teary. The adaption earned that song, it earned my tears. It made me feel exactly the same as the original anime did as a child, thrilled, excited, powerful and unstoppable

There’s something in how earnestly this show adapts everything.

I will die on the hill that Live Action Garp is a positive for the show. They took Garp's canon attempts to make Luffy into a Marine and added so much to it while sticking true to the spirit of the character. Even if he's a bit more gruff and less easygoing, he embodies the contradiction of a Marine who believes in freedom while being more emotionally grounded. It's a way better intro than the cover story or W7, and if the show gets to Marineford, it will pay off mad dividends.

I definitely agree. Garp was seen as very serious in his cover series and it wasn't until after we meet him in Water 7 that we knew he was Luffy's grandpa. Him being rivals/friends with Roger and his entire inner conflict during Marineford with Ace will be so damn heart wrenching and emotionally impactful. Seeing that he totally would have tried to smash Luffy's dream because it was to be the Pirate King, the man he was there for at his execution so to say to save his life from that makes so much sense.
And why when Luffy showed the tenacity he did in their end test Garp was able to have less reservations as he knew he wasn't gonna immediately be killed.
It makes even more sense when you realize Luffy left the exact day he turned 17 to be a pirate and left before Garp got there. Since he would have been on his way to Windmill Village to enlist Luffy in the marines so he wouldn’t have become a pirate.

Never in the world did I think that there would actually be a human that embodies Luffy. But that is Inaki.
I think his acting is sublime...it feels like an honest and earnest portrayal of a larger than life persona... but not so ridiculous as to undermine the character or feel unrealistic.
He doesnt fade into the background despite there being plenty of big personality characters, but he doesn't come across as cringey or inauthentic.
I never was a big fan of the original show... but I LOVE this Luffy.
And his acting and portrayal of the character will only get better as he gets more used to the role. He's acting in a language that isn't even his first and he's THAT good. It's seriously impressive

This is how much "We Are" means to me. I have NOT seen that adaptation, but as soon as I saw the Merry sailing, hearing the theme, and you saying this is the first time they played it, I genuinely got teary. I have been watching the epic of One Piece unfold since middle school and now I'm looking to buy a house. The Strawhats. have been with me for most of my life.
At this point, I’m convinced that Buggy is going to be the one to find One Piece given his ability to continually fail upwards, so I’m glad they nailed his live action character.
Considering it's so likely now that the One Piece is a pile of exposition and records next to a treasure pile Roger's crew left there, I wouldn't be surprised if Buggy gets this gigachad moment where he sees the information somehow but lets Luffy and Robin really dig in first because only one man truly DESERVES to be the Pirate King.
Luffy will find the One Piece but Buggy gets the credit and will become King of the Pirates for about five minutes
No luffy is gonna get there and be like "I did it! I finally found the... buggy!? What are you doing here!?"

Garp trying to stomp out his childrens dreams and not doing is literally why he hates Shanks, we he decides to train Koby specifically and why we get Marineford.
Actually showing Garp trying and failing in real time instead of just giving up when Luffy became a Pirate is honestly something we should have seen in the manga considering Garp’s issue at Marineford.
Yeah I don't understand how it's out of character for Garp to try to crush luffys dream of being a pirate when he literally did the same thing in the manga when luffy was young.
It comes down to personal interpretation. Personally, it seemed like Garp never tried as hard to stop Luffy and Ace from being pirates as he could have. Yes, he yelled at them as kids, but he never brought them in for marine training or restrained them when he was absolutely capable of doing so. Even when he finds Luffy in Water 7, he initially says he just wanted to see him and will let the Strawhats go, and then, even when forced by Sengoku to pursue them, goes incredibly easy on them. He's very much all bark and no bite, showing actually a similarity to Luffy and Dragon, where all three are shown to ultimately respect other people's pursuits of their dreams, whatever they are.
Zoro's one-liner game is on par with Leon Scott Kennedy. I love it.
Mihawk accepted the job because he already knew about Luffy from Shanks. He wanted to meet the kid Shanks kept talking about to see what the big deal was. It also explains his conversation with Garp about Luffy.
Arlong didn't want anyone thinking they were better than him. Buggy played to that ego flaw and got him to go after Luffy by making him want to put Luffy in his place. He is very Kilmonger like.
It also adds to the entire purpose of the Warlords. I mean, they're SUPPOSED to have an agreement with the government but when have we ever seen the government call on them other than the absolutely insanely huge event like Marineford? It makes total sense that the super high ranking marines would be able to dial up a warlord and send them on a mission, that's supposed to be the agreement the marines have with them!

Also, Arlong knew that Nami was with whoever had the map, so when he learned that Luffy had the map, he also knew that Nami was now part of another pirate's crew. It wasn't just to retrieve the map, but also to retrieve Nami.
The show might be a 8/10 or a 9/10 but the casting is like a 17/10

my only complaint was they didn't build miniatures to split krieg's ship and arlong park, they did such a good job of using camera tricks and practical effects wherever else possible (such a delightful surprise that my only complaint was a nitpick)
For Krieg, given his very reduced role, it makes sense they wouldn’t want to make a full physical ship only to destroy it, as there were no scenes of people acting on it.
As for the Tower, I’m guessing they wanted to replicate how it was destroyed from the inside out. Particularly the massive amount of debris coming out of each floor. Not to mention seeing Arlong get slammed through each floor.
I'm impressed that Geoff managed to slip in a reference to a current chapter within the first few minutes. That's talent and passion right there.

As a "netflix only" I really bought Usopp's back story. I feel like everyone really kind of grew to see the heart inside of him and like him. The whole crew has just really bought into Luffy's almost childlike glee and willingness to just get along and laugh with anyone who will give them the same, and Usopp fits into that dynamic like a hand into a glove.
I’ve never really liked usopp as a character in the anime until he became Sniper King and after the time skip, but this live action version made me actually love him
that's good because of all of the crew, Usopp's backstory* got altered the most

It's ridiculously difficult to sell anime personalities in a live action thing and the actors did an incredible job! It never feels "real" but it's really set in the world and their performances are sincere enough to sell it
My dad has been watching the Netflix series, and he said episode 1 alone had him interested in checking out the original. I think that speaks volume of how much this adaptation does right.

Yes, and I agree with taking longer to release episodes, but it should have been bi-weekly, one Wednesday, and the other one Saturday, so you could technically watch it one Friday, and be on time for the Saturday release if you have busy week, but would still feel fresh enough, but leave enough time to truly digest the season of Live Action One Piece, while not feeling overwhelmed by the waiting time until the next episode drops.
The LA did Helmeppo more justice than the Anime did. Actually enjoyed his scenes with Kobi as much as the Strawhats.
I’m so excited for season 2 and seeing Robin, Vivi, and Chopper.

The fact that this live action adaptation made me hyped throughout the entire series despite already reading and watching the OG material is proof that they know what they were doing. Everyone's perfectly cast: I can't unhear Garp being Scottish, Usopp is perfect, and Inaki fit Luffy to a T! Honestly, I kind of like Arlong being the big bad of the arc, and the fact his theme is gangsta-like fits perfectly b/c that boy is straight up gangsta.

As a non source material watcher, I have to say this show was such a great watch (specially with an anime watcher to fill me on the worldbuilding here and there) and still I got the feeling these characters were so well constructed and portrayed they had to be based on something VERY solid. I gotta say I didn't see enough love for Nami here, and for me the actress did such a good job at being the emotional core plot of the season. Yes, all the other characters had their vibes perfectly set, but Nami's arc is what made the season work as an arc for me, so many props to her!

It's even bonkers bc according to Rudd, the whole reason she became a One Piece fan when she was younger was because Nami's arc, specially the scene where Nami stabs her arm and ask for help finally. also got SO HYPE about the teeny tiny little detail of the crew barely making it out of the fog, the faint glow of neon in the distance, and Usopp being able to read the sign like "What's a ba-ra-ti-e?", and then an immediate cut showing said faint neon glow and us the viewers still unable to make out the actual letters. I definitely felt that was just another nod to the writers being Extremely Well-Versed in the source material as far as Usopp's keen observation haki goes 👀
My biggest fear for this show is that they aren't going to be willing to put as much money into it.
The first season had a higher budget than any of the seasons of Game of Thrones. And that's going in purely untested with the potential that it could have flopped.

This adaptation succeeded in making people who literally will never watch anime (like my dad and others) invested in the show. Oda said in a note that this is probably the last chance he will get to bring One Piece into more of a mainstream audience. I say he and the entire cast and crew succeeded in that. Wonderful show love the pacing and set designs!

As for western animated TV series, the only famous you have worldwide are Tom and Jerry, Scooby Doo, Sponge Bob, Mr. Bean, Justice League, Ben 10, Totally Spies, Winx Club, Avatar (made by South Korea).
In Asia, Africa, South America and some parts of Europe particularly France, Italy, Portugal, Spain are dominated by anime rather than western cartoons or animations on analog TV back in the day. Heck, in my country, our TV was full of anime even airing at the night time block when I was a kid. I could name tons of anime while just several western cartoons or animations that aired on our TV.
As for westerners, they have already watched anime but they had no idea that it was called anime. I'm certain that they have watched *HEIDI, GIRL OF THE ALPS,* anime series since this one was famous back in the day. It was like a blockbuster film because it was global famous.
Heidi, Girl of the Alps was one of Hayao Miyazaki's oldest project. You could ask any older westerners such as British, French, Italians, Swiss, Germans, Polish, Spaniards.
If you're a westerner, you could even ask your parents if they have watched Heidi when they were young. Show them the pictures of Heidi, Girl of the Alps (1974). I'm certain they had no idea it was called anime. Also, there were these anime called Maya the Bee, Moomin, Ulysses 31 that westerners thought they were absolutely western cartoons made by europeans 😂
Overall, Japan's anime has been mainstream ever since in the age of analog TV, and more popular than western cartoons or animations in general
Probably one of my favorite things with the live action one piece is that you can tell Luffy has a big smile on his face when he’s fighting. it just captures his character so well.
It's crazy that you point out how weird it is that Arlong came to see Buggy personally and it would have made more sense to just send his lieutenants because that's exactly what I was thinking when I first watched the scene. I saw Korobe show up and I was like "Oh, cool. Arlong sent him to deal with Buggy. That makes sense, it's a neat way to tie everything together" and then Arlong walked in and I was like "oh."
I started watching this, stopped, watched the entire 8 episodes, and came back. I gotta say, it's a solid 8/10. Far better than I expected. Even the fact that they greatly changed when certain characters appear and interact is actually pretty cool. This is still definitely One Piece and all of the key scenes are included, but they changed enough to justify watching this even if you've technically already seen it before. I'm all for Koby getting more screen time.

Since you brought it up, there was actually one thing I liked in the Netflix version better than the manga too: Merry actually dying.
Naming the ship in the honor of Kaya's faithful servant, who died in an attempt on her life narrowly thwarted by the crew receiving the ship, kinda works better than him surviving (which also made Kuro look kind of incompetent) and giving them a ship that he named after himself, something that always struck me as a little tacky.
Yeah, the series could get a bit absurd with the "He's not actually dead!" revelations at times, after milking that "death" for as much drama as possible. Including a certain infamous case in the Alabasta arc. 😀
This could also make a certain dispute between 2 crewmembers in Water 7, if we ever get that far, hit harder as well imo

As an audio guy, the leitmotifs, music, and effects were a joy to watch out for in this show. We Are, as mentioned in this video did not play fully until the Straw hats had the Going Merry. You would only hear snippets of it on some moments, in the earlier episodes. That's an amazing way to build up on that music
Oooof that finale song though was something special.
The restraint they showed to save "We Are" for the perfect moment made me tear up.
I'm glad you gave Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black the credit he deserves. He was one of the best parts of the Cowboy Bebop adaptation. I truly believed I was seeing Jet Black on screen, and not some shoddy imitation.
Fun fact: in the show's Italian dub, Shanks is voiced by Renato Novara, Luffy's voice actor in the Italian dub of the anime, so they played a bit on the "passing of the hat" with that.

I'm pretty sure what they are going for is that the bond of Zoro and Luffy results in some of that care-free attitude rubbing off on him.
That makes sense, as Zoro outright admits in episode 2 that Luffy's determination and care-free attitude is rubbing off on him: _"[I] don't have to [believe in Luffy]; he believes in himself. It rubs off."_
The casting is amazing, everybody is spot on, but man, Iñaki is just something else, he has so much charisma! I can't even count the amout of people I've seen who never cared about One Piece but were saying they would watch the show as soon as it dropped because of Iñaki.
I totally read Garp as chasing Luffy genuinely most of the series, out of both a sense of marine duty but also concern for his grandson. Then changing his mind after conversations with Zeff and Mihawk and Coby, and only then deciding to test Luffy with the fight to see if Luffy had any chance of making it. It's been so long since I read and watched the animanga so I don't really remember Garp's original character but I liked him how he was in the show.
The show Garp is easier to understand initially, but long term destroys his character. Its gonna be tricky, they are messing with parts of the story that have implications hundereds of chapters down the line. I just hope whatever changes they make remain consistent when adapting later storylines.
But for a complete outsider? Sure, Garp seems like a legitimate badass. An actual persistent antagonist, but not evil.

Absolutely loved season 1! But i do hope they do 2 more episodes per season. Some of the more impactful moments felt like they didn't have enough time to breathe, in my opinion.
Next season would definitely benefit from 10 episodes instead of 8. I’m a little apprehensive since the show is so expensive, but hopefully they do it. Alabasta will be tough to cover without that extra time.

I think Alabasta could be condensed into a 4-5 episode arc. Keep in mind that would be more than 2 full length feature films worth of story. If something like Dune could be covered in two movies, they should be able to tell this story in that amount of time as well.
They either need to do at least ten episodes or make Alabasta one whole season by itself, like Arlong Park it's a defining One Piece arc and muuuuch bigger so getting it right is so important.
Coby and Helmeppo receiving more screentime is easily my favourite part of the show and one of my few criticisms of the manga. Coby is presented as Luffy's rival and counterpart in Marines right from the start but he barely receives any time in limelight before Marineford and even post-timeskip those scenes are few and far between. In this adaptation they really look like they're gonna be rivals in the future, as they should and we're gonna get much better perspective on Marines. I suspect that originally was Oda's vision as well, but since the story is slow enough even as it is now, I'm sure he realized quite early on that he simply doesn't have enough time to flesh out both sides at the same time so he tried to pivot to more established Marine to be Luffy's Garp, eventually failing in that as well. Now we have unique opportunity to see what could have been if the format of weekly manga didn't didn't dictate the storytelling pace so much.
I don't think Koby is meant to be a rival, but I'm only on chapter 600 so maybe that changes. The point of Koby is to show early on that there are good marines and bad marines, just as there are good and bad pirates. Luffy is more like Koby's role model than his rival.

Oda never wanted the Garp plotline in the Live Action version, he fought against it but they kept it in anyways. I guarantee you it wasn't his "original" vision.
Also, everyone else didn't like that plotline. And because of that feedback, the directors learned their lesson and promised to not put plotlines like that into the series :)

I'm glad you mentioned the music in this show. Rarely does music in shows really grab me but the moment I heard the intro bit I went "Oooooooooh". Then after ep 1 I did some research and found out it was Sonya & Giona and ALL made sense suddenly. They did soundtrack in the 1st season of The Witcher and it's one of the very few things that adaptation ever nailed. And then I saw they invited other fantastic artists as guest musicians?! Marcin's guitar on all the Mihawk themes was just exquisite. And the Nami themed song with vocals from Aurora obliterated me emotionally. It's so beautiful. I broke replay button on my Spotify with this song.
Syrup Village was my favorite part of the season. I felt the episodes captured Kuro's terrifying nature perfectly, and I actually preferred the Straw Hats and Kaya running away from him because things felt much more claustrophobic in the mansion as opposed to outside like in the anime.
I think this portrayal of Garp actually makes a bit more sense if you think about it especially knowing what we know now. Not trying to make excuses or anything, but Garp desperately tried to beat wanting to be pirates out of Ace and Luffy. Both of them carrying the Will of D. and being born from prominent terrorists for lack of a better term, Garp KNEW that the government would stop at no end to have them both executed if they became pirates or were really even aware of their existence. But one way to be powerful and carry the Will Of D. without being hunted by the government is to become a marine like him and Saul. Garp doesn't want to see his grandchildren be executed, I think it makes sense for him to go to great lengths to make sure Luffy really knows what he's signing up for, it also plays into the troupe of parents having a hard time realizing that their kids are growing up. That's how I read it at least.
Yeah this makes Garp letting Luffy get to Ace in marineford much more tragic.
His character arc would be like this: *Garp tries to stop Luffy from becoming a Pirate.
*Understanding that he can't, he lets Luffy Follow his Dream
*Gets proud that Luffy is achieving his dreams in brief intermission between some arcs
*Ace gets Captured
*Garp must now execute his adopted grandson
*Luffy tries to save Ace
*Garp must now choose between his Family and responsibility, deeply regretting his choice of letting them follow their dreams

Garp playing Go and threatening/blackmailing someone is just plain weird. He would definitely punch 1st before asking questions. This is the man who walks through doors and accidentally reveals world shattering secrets to other people. He has accepted that Luffy and Ace would be pirates way before the series started. He is closer to a "Go with the flow guy" instead of the one portrayed here. Hell, he is still laughing at luffy being targeted by two emperors of the sea and still calling him a kid.
@@forte609 Manga Garp and Liver Action Garp are not 1 to 1, None of these characters are obviously. Therefore I don't think garp's live action version takes a very large leap of logic knowing what we do now. He was also obviously still upset and pissed over the years that they became pirates. I'm just saying Garp trying a little harder to protect his grandson, doesn't seem weird to me. Another thing he does is have a marine in the East Blue that sin't a complete joke something both my bosses (People who have never watched or really even heard of the anime or manga) pointed out to me. Garp also spends the whole season trying his hardest to get Koby and Helmeppo to defy him, I also think they hint heavily at Garp not truthfully being upset with Luffy. Seems like he is using Luffy as a tool, to get Koby to stand up to Garp, to really drill in that the world isn't black and white. Marine and pirate is just a title. you can be a shithead marine like Axe-hand who's more akin to a ruthless pirate, and you can be a "filthy pirate" and have a heart of gold. Essentially the world isn't black and white and you can't just follow orders blindly.
Actually, Ace is Luffy's adopted brother, they aren't blood related. Also, the government was already trying to execute Ace since literally the day he was born because of who his biological father is.
The comparisons to Stephen Chou's work was apt. He truly proved that "live action cartoons" can work if you go all in on the stylized hyper-reality feel of the movie or show. Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin soccer were entertaining as hell. And also quite artistic in its execution. I haven't seen One Piece yet, but I will this weekend. As someone who has neither read the manga or watched the anime, I'll be going into this with a newbie's eyes.

I find it funny that the accident that killed Kuina is left vague in the live action, which to me shows that even the series' producers know how ridiculous it is that Kuina died from falling down a staircase.

That ultimately cheapens Zoro's backstory. Kuina being such a swordswomen prodigy was expected to at least become a great warrior, and thus meet her end like a warrior. For her to die so suddenly and anticlimactically makes her life unfulfilled, thus leading to Zoro shouldering the weight of her expectations. Kuina and Zoro promised to become great warriors with Zoro vowing to one day beat Kuina, but her sudden and drab death pulls the rug out from under Zoro. This is why I am so turned off by the changes to the story in Live Action, it cheapens everything and takes out the emotional weight.

They've done a really good job at incorporating beats and jokes from waaaaaay in the future, in the early parts of the show. I think the Hot Zoro criticism is a good opportunity to take the Law gag (the moments where he totally cracks and acts goofy like the straw hats), and give it to zoro in season 2.
This is kinda how zoro works anyways - he's usually cool but sometimes he cracks. He just doesn't have the gag where he catches himself breaking character. I think it could really work for live action zoro.
I think it could be his genuine seriousness and confidence to dumb bits like when he striked a pose against Mr 3 candle could work. Mackenyu out of character during their press tour/promotion recordings felt like early Zoro.
They played the broken phone game and the only sentence they shouldn't mix up (One Piece is now streaming on Netflix) was delivered outloud by Mackenyu. He, confident, striked a pose and said "Netflix is now streaming on Netflix". He didn't notice his mistake, until Taz pointed it out and he was genuinely confused, even saying "I think I fucked it up?". Everyone busted laughing, Mackenyu yelling now the correct sentence. Other of my fav bits on him is cropping Taz's shadow when they anounced they are currently filming season 2, besides arguing with him about who is better (Sanji vs Zoro) on a "answering most common questions" video (arrogantly and smirking saying to Taz "look at the bounty").

I believe the Garp early introduction does wonders to keep a regular audience supremely hooked on the intriguing family dynamics and possible drama therein, so it'd actually feel extremely good, if the Mihawk, Zeff and Koby lessons he "Learned" through this season 1 would change him into being the more carefree character later on. His attitude for the first season is actually really important to be portrayed this way, because he's supposed to represent what is essentially a wall, the world government and Navy are supposed to be what rules the seas with an iron fist, and an unbending will, and with Axehand and Nezumi we get to see how it can also become corrupt, but Garp being the stoic wall of an iron fisted government official, as he is portrayed for the majority of the show, it has a very imposing effect when you know that they will be chasing the strawhats endlessly, and he won't have the cushion of it being his grandfather chasing him anymore (which we'll likely witness in Loguetown with Smoker next season).
I started to catch up with the manga for watching the episodes but this early reveal broke me. I agree with your point but still I just swallowed a big spoiler
@@josefagomezschmeisser8356 If you are not at least at chapter 1050 in the manga or episode 1080 in the anime. (The anime is way behind the manga, don't confuse chapter numbers with episode numbers.) You should not consume any more One Piece content at all ever. Trust me, spoilers are completely unavoidable.
I say this as a super fan to a newly minted super fan. Completely out of love for the story and hatred of spoilers. The manga is going to be running for several more years, you have time to catch up and then watch all the theory crafting videos. I wish you only smiles and laughter.

wont lie, love how buggy turned from legiut terrifying to perfect comedy. so much about this live action is such a great breath of fresh air. i couldnt help form binging it and the first season was always the weakest imo so i look forward to whats next (you know after the strike is HOPEFULLY settled in writers favor)
Taz learned how to cook, regularly cooked for the entire cast and crew, and became a fucking black belt for his role as Sanji.
Mackenyu trained and strengthened his jaw muscles to hold a sword in his mouth to prepare for the audition. The fucking AUDITION.

Jacob and Iñaki are just straight-up their characters.
Every member of the main cast were either born for, or put in an admirable amount of effort for these roles.
Yeah putting in that much work tells me that they plan to play those characters for a very long time
Also, Sanji double dubbed himself for the 2 Spanish subs (Latam and European)
More dedication than 99.9% of MOVIE actors imo, let alone a Netflix series. The actors are having fun too, and that really shows and makes such a difference.
