  • The First Council of Nicaea in 325AD is perhaps the ecumenical council many people know best, however due to the work of Dan Brown many have strong misconceptions of what ACTUALLY happened there. The First Council of Nicaea was a three month show down between Arius and the Bishop of Alexandria - Saint Alexander of Alexandria - formally called by the newly converted Emperor Constantine. The most important question wrangled with during that meeting was determining the exact divine nature of Jesus. Was Jesus God? Or was he separate from God? It is a point not all of Christianity even agrees upon today.
In our final segment, Patrick discusses with us the first major steps of founding the Gupta Empire on the Indian subcontinent. The Guptas would become an eminent power on the subcontinent for the next three centuries. Moreover, many people consider this Gupta period as the great golden age of Indian civilization. We learn more.

How would YOU go about introducing a time traveler from 1980 to our time? Let us know down below!

It is amazing how the Church took three centuries to document the teachings of Jesus as a formal religious orthodoxy. But in doing so, revealed that in the absence of Jesus, his teachings have devolved into a confabulation: The four gospels were written long after the events; are at variance as to the teachings and biography. Importantly, they were written in Greek and not the language of the disciples who preserved the oral tradition in Aramaic. Paul appears to have been given prominence, despite not having known Jesus other than vicariously. Interestingly, Paul appears to have been at variance with Peter, a true disciple.

It was a great episode. I truly enjoyed it all the way through. I would love to share the following:
    1. The Patreon submitted question is very interesting. In 2019, I asked my dad, who was born in the early 60s, how were the 80s like compared to now, and he told me that it was like today. I was confused and shocked, and my mom said a very reassuring "no" in response. I am very glad that you managed to answer a similar question.
    2. When Patrick mentioned super heroes, it reminded me of Captain America who was frozen in ice for about 70 years. In the MCU, Steve Rogers adapts fairly quickly to modern society. However, there is a moment in the first Avengers film where a waitress told him that they have wireless [wifi] and he responded by saying: "radio?". There is also a moment in the second Captain America film where we see the journal he uses to keep track of modern trends and pop culture phenomena (movies, shows, etc).
    3. Yes. Ahsoka is named after Ashoka. It was confirmed on Twitter. I remember going to the book store once searching for the Ahsoka book and accidentally typing Ashoka on the store's computer. At the time, I didn't know much about Ashoka and I was quite confused.
    4. I wonder what inspired the creation of the decimal system in the Middle East to India. Is it simply the fact that we have 10 digits or is there more to it? The Mayans did develop a vigesimal (base 20) system and the theory goes that the reason it's 20 is because of our digits and our toes. I did study the binary and hexadecimal systems and they're very interesting but I don't think they would be as good as the decimal system.
    5. The term "Golden Age" is quite interesting since you could apply it for most of history from the beginning of agriculture (and even before that) to the modern day. The Council of Nicaea could even be considered a Golden Age for Christianity (although, it's more of a turning point. However, you could argue that turning points and Golden Ages are the same or are connected to one another). When does a Golden Age begin and when does it end? Are we always living in a Golden Age? For all that it's worth, Paul is right by saying: "we should always be working to make today that Golden Age". Thank you for sharing this lovely message Paul, I greatly appreciated it and it was a great way to end the video.

Foremost, what an amazing set of comments. Thank you so much. I usually reply to such things on my own account, separate from the channel’s - keeping matters separate more for simplicity’s sake than anything.
Amazing on the Ahsoka point. Neither he nor I were sure at the time, but that’s a really cool piece of creative lore for Star Wars. She’s also a character I’ve come to admire immensely.
On the making today the golden age part, it’s uplifting to hear that it resonates with someone else as well. I can think of no greater and more worthwhile effort. Cheers!

To introduce a time traveller from 1980 to our time, I would start by explaining that computers and the internet have gotten much, much bigger and far more important to our daily lives. I would then explain about the collapse of the Soviet Union and the rise of China, Thatcherism and it’s long term impact (if they’re in the UK), and then brake the news gently to them about major events like 9/11 and the subsequent Iraq war, as well as about COVID. I think the biggest stumbling block would be trying to explain how our society has become so divided and how that lead to people like Donald Trump & Boris Johnson becoming president and prime minister respectively.

All I will say is, as a child of the 60s who was in my first flush of adulthood in the 80s, given what we are now living through, I wish I was my age now back in the 80s!

Constantine lied about division. There is no record even on the ark of Constantine in Rome. There's no mention of it whatsoever. Constantine was very clever by combining pagan and Christian doctrine together. Therefore having a larger audience for his domain
