      I think that if the show focused on a singular world it would have worked better. Like get rid of the films and have them replaced with a real book written by a dissident writer who inspires many. Have Jules read it and become radicalized, while Smith continues to rise and eventually assassinates the Nazi leadership. This allows for an independent America and a resistance movement within the neutral zone and American Riech.
      On the Japanese side have the BCR not be mainly filled with African Americans but with a coalition akin to that Fred Hampton made uniting the white, Hispanic, and black populations against the Japanese.
      Have the Japanese characters of Kido and the Tagomi have their stories revolve around redeployment to the Chinese front as diplomats after the Japanese leave America. This would both create a fascinating story and appeal to international audiences, especially a Chinese market were they are portrayed as communist freedom fighters. From a sales and story perspective this would be better. Since the shows focus on the parallel worlds hurt it more than helped it.
      Childan and Ed could travel the neutral zone encountering the growing resistance.

      Gotta be honest, I loved the angle of the films and parallel universes around season 2 and until mid season 3. But after Frank Spotnitz left the show (I'm not entirely sure that's the reason, but I imagine the main showrunner leaving fucked things up quite a bit, like Darabont leaving TWD after season 1, for instance) they seemed to have lost their creativity and ran out of interesting things to do with the show, which is ridiculous with how much there is to do with a world where the Nazi's won the Second World War.

In this universe he is an old man, and the people around him are plotting against him or waiting for his death. We don't really get to expect a strong Führer. However, we get to see a glimpse of the "familiar" diabolical plotter when he survives the assassination attempt and shows he knew Heydrich et co were after him. S4.E9: This should’ve been the ending and there should’ve been a season 5 to end the show properly. Smith is such a good character that i began to side with him and hated the resistance. Wyatt is ok but Juliana is so boring.
    it’s Rome all over again. I’m pretty sure a lot of American presidents wanted to do that to Hoover. This scene was so good and then the next episode just derailed everything... I think, we can all agree, that this episode should be the real final episode. They divided the empire;
    The end of this season was such a shame. A real disappointment for an otherwise very good season. It really felt rushed towards the end.
    And here’s the thing... Smith was kinda the show's main character. Season 1 he was the antagonist. Season 2 and 3 he had become an antihero and by season 4 Juliana's arc had been so far relegated to the side, that Smith and Helen were constantly centre stage with the Japanese plot being the next most interesting. The show went out of its way to make clear that John was never a die-hard Nazi. Every deed and decision he’d ever made he’d done for his family. The tragedy of his character was supposed to be that he could only go upwards onto ever more shaky ground, or come crashing down with his wife and kids' fates in the balance.
    To all of a sudden take a 180 with his character feels so cheap and forced to me. Why is he going full steam ahead with plans for Holocaust.3.0 when he and his family are safe? Because he “didn’t know how” to stop it? Really!? But his mate, Bill, could turn the planes around with a single order and publicly throw away his badge? Not to mention that’s terribly unrealistic for a nation where significant portion of the population are extremely indoctrinated and at least half the top military staff in the American Reich are still die-hard Nazis.
    This needed another fucking season. We should’ve had John lose his sanity over Thomas and kidnap him. It would’ve made for great storytelling. If the writers wanted to drum up the “Absolute power corrupts absolutely” trope, they could’ve... but not in half a bloody episode! Way to butcher 4 seasons worth of character development in 30 fucking minutes.
    :(

    • @brianllllll

      I like your take but the issue with it is we don't see what John Smith did to not only survive but amass all that power. It's pretty clear what he did -- implemented and probably planned or architected the American Holocaust. He's the American Heydrich. So yes while the show takes decades later, it would break suspension of disbelief for someone like John Smith to have "redemption" because redemption for such a man (a man that Himmler sees as a son) to be redeemed. He murdered millions of people. Redemption can't come for someone like that no matter the motivations. There's only one possible ending that could secure his family and put him on the side of the resistance -- become the Fuhrer and achieve the destruction of Germany somehow but that would really take some creative writing and would logically end up in his own destruction. He's far too selfish to have redemption because any credible redemption would result in his death.

    The irony of the scene is how do you root for one man who has made evil choices in life over another man who is just as clearly if not more evil himself. This was an awesome scene in the show, and it shows the depths of which human beings will fall in order to maintain power and protect themselves. This is why tyrannical governments and feudalistic societies were and are so brutal. Machiavellian is a means to an end, survival of the fittest is only one small segment, you have to be diabolical in thinking 12 steps ahead of your competitors or you will end up "one coughing fit away from being eliminated". In these types of societies everyone is your competitor, you only have temporary alliances to achieve temporary goals in a never-ending cycle.

    I wonder what Himmler would have said if John waited until he was done with the mask

    I like how he is able to emit sounds,muffled yes but sounds,is more realistic.
    In other movies,shows when this happens the guys just dont make a single sound.

    There are many great series, with many great scenes - "Game of Thrones", "Mad Men", "Vikings", "Westworld" - to name a few. This scene / storyline was never in the book. The writer who wrote this scene, taking an American and putting him in the role of the next Fuhrer in a future Reich which never existed, is superb. And what elevates it to pure genius is Himmler's speech to John Smith on his view of him as a son, which is brilliantly shattered by Rufus Sewell and his counter speech of how any such comparison sickens him. And what happens next is completely unexpected, and a true knock out punch. It's a sublime 3 minutes and 46 seconds.
