  • So here is the ballistic gel video at 500 yds with the NATO M855, I'm using the same rifle and ammo that I used in the "meat target" video. • 500 yards, a 20” AR wi...
    The slow motion part wasn't as good as I'd hoped but it still turned out ok.
    Be sure to check out 12:44 it quite comical.

    Excellent video! The very first time I've ever seen anyone actually prove just how deadly the 5.56 Nato round can be, at 500 yards.
    Definitely not just for punching holes in paper.

    Exactly why you dont believe everything you see on the internet. The USMC has been hitting targets at 500 for years with m855. If that isnt good enough get a bigger gun. And yes its a lethal or at least disabling round at reasonable distance. Thanks for taking the time and effort to do this video for us.

    That was significantly more yawing than I was expecting. I was always under the impression that it would just ice pick it's way through at 500 yards, so this is a welcome surprise (my rifle likes green tips more than 193's).

      Twist rate really makes a big difference in terms of yaw.

    • @MTMILITIAMAN7.62
      @MTMILITIAMAN7.62 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yawing and tumbling isn't as dependent on linear velocity as rotational velocity. All spitzer projectiles have a tendency to yaw and tumble in mediums denser than that for which they are stabilized. So the bullet tumbling is not surprising. The bullet fragmenting is surprising. The M855 generally requires about 2700 fps for consistent fragmentation and almost never fragments below 2500 fps, unless it hits a large bone. Seeing M855 fragment at ~1650 fps is extremely rare.

    That was much better performance in the accuracy department than what I expected. They were coming in big time on the steel. Took a while to get there, but whacked the plate hard. I'd like to see the Black Hills MK262 in action and a 10.5 Commando upper at distance. I know there's a big velocity difference.

    This video inspired me to make a designated m855 build
    16” Sionics 1/8 barrel with a Yhm turbo k rb
    Shoots pmc xtac m855 just under 3000 fps and regularly groups 1.5-1.75 moa
    Has no problem hitting 8 inch steel at 400m consistently
    I think it’s the perfect weapon for a potential “near peer conflict”
    M855 has become severely underrated

    That did impress me to see 62 g steel penetrators cause that much wound channel damage and penetration was excellent!... I can't be too critical but, a bonus since you were out and setup, would have been to seen a comparison with other bullet weights/types... especially a heavier 75 - 77 grain vs a 55 grain FMJ and HP... having a 20in barrel length definitely was the winner. The M16 /5.56 was designed to shoot out of that barrel length to maximize velocity.... a 16in barrel Carbine velocity is like 500 ft/s slower. maybe more at that range. So, if you chrono it, used different bullet weights.... You would have gotten the GOLD STANDARD and most likes ever as no-one has tested that before.

    Great shooting!. Like many, I'm truly surprised @ the accuracy and energy left on the M855, which many have treated as a red-headed, step child. With this said, results will vary and opinions are subjective. The common platform used in the arm forces is the M4, which sports a 14.7" barrel with a 1:7" RT.
    So this is out of a 20" and is it accurate to assume it's a 1:9"?
    I'd love to see 600+ to 700 yard test.

    Nice work.. I don't think I've seen anyone shooting gel at 500 yards. That green tip is surprisingly accurate. I found PMC seems to be the best for the money. You should have used a regular FMJ for comparison. I shot mild steel at that distance, and it would punch right through where regular FMJ would just leave a dent. The fragmentation was rather poor, I heard of complaints about this. It was really designed to used against body armor not soft tissue.

    • @WesternOutdoor
      @WesternOutdoor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’ve heard so many different stories of what it was designed to do I don’t know what’s true. It’s what I used while in the Marine Corps in both the M16 and the 249 SAW. Obviously less powerful than the 7.62 NATO we used in the M60 and 240B but still effective.
      I’m going to melt that gel down and try to reuse it so I think I’ll do a comparison video with the M193. Thanks for the idea and thanks for watching this video too.

    • @jagzilla1398
      @jagzilla1398 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WesternOutdoor Ah I didn't know they used it in SAWs. I remember the ole timers call it a "poodle shooter round" As they felt it was ineffective against larger targets. The 7.62 is defiantly better. But remember even a 22LR will penetrate someones forehead at 300 yards.
      Actually I would use a FMJ 62gr, to keep it apples to apples..If you can get some of the new M855A1 rounds. They seem to be the best of both penetration and expansion.

    Un-freaking-believable. I used to think 5.56 has no energy after 350 to 400 metres. But this at 500 yards seems like the bullets actually increased it's energy at long range, the longer it travels. Not true but it seems this way. I mean, zipped through the 14 inch gel like paper. Dayumm. This means 5.56 is totally effective in long combat or battle even in mountain hill range battles. Boy I was wrong. Didn't think 5.56 is not reliable to drop a human target in long range battles. But this blew my mind. Wanna see this same test with 7.62x39. I gotta say this again, I really thought wearing a leather jacket and getting shot by 5.56 at over 400 metres would not kill me but man,, I am totally wrong, I would be totally dead in 5 minutes if not immediately.

      It’s a good shooting rifle. Does even better with a load I worked up for it. I’m still surprised how they punch all the way through with velocity to spare. That's a very interesting result! I prefer M193 out of my 20" barrel for the armor penetration aspect up close and the fragment/tumble out to 200yds but now I can see why the military issues green tips; they're effective at a distance and penetrate barriers more effectively.
    The furthest I've taken mine out to on steel is 300yds, my red dot and magnifier are just barely enough to make consistent hits on my 11x14 A-zone targets.
    Last year I got an 8pt buck at 25yds with M193 and it basically removed the ribs on the opposite side of the chest. 2 months ago I shot a large feral hog at 200yds-ish with M193; it fell over, got up and ran through my neighbors fence :(. Now i almost exclusively run 55gr gold dot SP but haven't had a chance to try it on game.
