  • @goodlifehacker
    @goodlifehacker ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Your channel provides an entirely different perspective on the terminal ballistics of a cartridge. Everyone else is looking at the wound channel and penetration depth which is the aftermath, but you show the devastation that occurs upon impact. It looked like a bomb went off inside those gel blocks when hit with that .223 and that would have been missed had it not been for your high speed camera. Great job! I think a video showing the smaller caliber rounds such as 22lr 22wmr 25acp in their self defense varieties would change people's perception as to the lethality because the gel block testing aftermath that the other channels show doesn't provide the full picture. You guys are a great team keep doing what you're doing.

    I drill out the hollow points and cut/score my own design into cci 22mag and 22Lr mostly. The mag does the exact same thing as that controlled chaos round. Massive and instant expansion with either 4 or 6 petals that shred meat for the first 4" then the base continues into the target. I have partially split the base piece like a split-shot fishing lead so it would create two base projectile's after shedding the petals and it works great, just time consuming so I only make those when I need to take our rodent's.

    I totally LOVE it that you guy's shoot straight into the gel, and NOT at an angle like a few other channels do, thus causing the slug to come out the side's because they can't shoot straight!😂👏👏 And your control over the firearms to keep it still is superbly outstanding!👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍

      @kevinroberts781 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly 🤣🤣

    • @murlock666
      @murlock666 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Trust me, those guys still shoot straight. It's bullets that do funky shit on impact. once a round strikes an object, it's a random event that follows. That's why you see people like scott from KB needing walls of gel to catch some of the big bore rounds he uses. Once its in the gel, it's anyones guess where its going to yaw. Up,down,left, right and anything inbetween. It's all possible.
      The round is spinning at say, 90,000 revolutions per minute for example. Deforming the nose of the round in any direction from true centre is going to make that round change direction.
      Thats just using a standard round that stays whole. throw a round into it like controlled chaos where the nose fragments and the base continues through the gel, like shown it this vid and that base does the same, Yaw.
      Another thing to bear in mind is that .223/5.56 FMJ is designed to stay whole (geneva convention) but deform on the nose slightly and tumble to increase the temporary wound cavity thus, increasing lethality. That adds to the uncertainty of travel upon impact too.
      Basically the TL;DR is. Keeping rounds in the gel is more luck than judgement. Yes you need to shoot straight. But that only looks after the internal and external ballistics :P Terminal Ballistics is a tough thing to fit into an 8"x8"x16" gel block :) It was blind luck that .223 FMJ stayed in there imo.

    • @whatsmolly5741
      @whatsmolly5741 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still carry their 90g xd for my g26 but this idea for .223 is kinda dumb, you want expansion but with weight retention, you don't want some fragments to be the same depth as a hollow point while the base went through 36 inches of gel and kept going. The advantage of expanding ammo is negated because the base just keeps on going. As dumb as sounds this performance is actually similar to green tips because the steel core definitely assists with penetration but it also has a tendency to lose all the other stuff to fragmentation. Just not seeing a practical application to justify the absurd price.

    Just do you know, when multi-cal is stamped on the lower reciever it doesn’t mean that the barrel is able to fire multiple different calibers. Just saying the lower can accept different caliber magazines, like 300 blackout, 5.56, 6.5 grendel, etc. but yes 5.56 barrels can also shoot 223, but not the other way around unless it’s a 223 wylde barrel

    • @lmaolmoo4147
      @lmaolmoo4147 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can shoot 5.56 out of a 223 barrel. They're almost identical other than the neck of the case on 5.56 being hardened. Pressures are the same. The confusion comes from 5.56 and .223 being pressure rated by different systems.

    • @kyle18934
      @kyle18934 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lmaolmoo4147 what is the point in having .223 and 5.56? why didn't people just pick one since they are so similar?

    • @Nick-sx6jm
      @Nick-sx6jm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kyle18934 Because almost everything that guy said is wrong and a perfect example of why you dont listen to people on the internet without doing research yourself.
      1. 5.56 necks are usually annealed which makes them softer not harder.
      2. 5.56 is typically loaded to higher pressures
      3. You should not shoot 5.56 out of a .223 gun because it can explode or damage the gun over time because of higher pressures and because while the cartridges are the same size the cambers are cut differently with more freebore cut into 5.56.

    • @kyle18934
      @kyle18934 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Nick-sx6jm ok, but that still doesn't answer the question I was asking. What's the purpose of having both types? Why not just do 5.56 or .223? They are so similar.

    • @Nick-sx6jm
      @Nick-sx6jm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kyle18934 The reason that 5.56 exists is because its basically the military designation for .223. The AR15 was originally developed for .223 and eventually the military wanted shorter and lighter guns that used the cartridge to its full potential so they loaded .223 about as hot as you can and made some tweaks to the guns to be able to shoot it.

    A) use long guns over pistols whenever possible and that
    B) solid copper projectiles and solid copper monolithic JHP’s (like Lehigh’s Extreme Defender, Controlled Chaos, and Norma’s MHP) are the future of defensive projectiles (IMHO). Lead will become the Cassette Tape in a solid copper DVD world.

    I like ur no nonsense approach. I am an enginner and i feel like I am definitely the intended audience. I like guys like KB and how funny they are, but your content is more interesting than amusing and I think it fits a great niche. Not that you asked, but I think a little bit of commentary would be great. Like what makes it a "controlled chaos" round, energy of the round at speed, what distance were you shooting from, how the recoil was, etc. Minimalist commentary. You guys seem like the straight forward type and I think just a little more information/discussion would compliment your setup well.
    I mean, I will watch it anyway, but it would be nice if I didn't have to search the ammo information afterwards. Thanks and keep it up.

    The 13% higher mass of the 62 gr HP round at 3100 fps would expectedly penetrate further than a 55 gr round of the same speed. Momentum, a good surrogate for penetration assuming similar cross-sectional density, is mass times velocity (P=MV).

    Can you do some tests with common defense loads like Hornady critical duty or some gold dot in 9mm and 233 on a torso? For science of course

    That measuring tape is a good helper. After every shot, it's packing things up to leave! 😅

    I had no idea a platform could be used as a firearm! I usually use platforms to wait for a train or to observe something or do somwthing from a level, elevated position. If you hadn't told me that this was an AR 15 "platform", I could sworn it was a rifle.
