    Had the 4's... liked them, bouncy cushion and good lockdown, warm on the feet though. Skipped the 5's and now I'm back for the 6. Coming from a speedgoat user, the Caldera 6 is AMAZING! Everything checks for me... even the outsole grip, really tacky even on wet surfaces (which the 4 and 5 lacks)... new formulation I reckon. Absolutely love the DNA LOFT (v3). Great road to trail shoe in my book.

    A solid and very comfortable option in my lineup.👍

    I think I'm going to like a lot of shoes that you are giving 6's & 7's to because I like the max cushioned, stable feel.

    This is Brooks Trail shoe intended for Ultra long-distance racing. Similar use case for Saucony Xodus Ultra. Additional stack height makes for the lack of rock plate. DNA Loft v3 is the new foam that was used in limited edition Brooks Aurora and now brought to mainstream with Glycerin 20 and Caldera 6. I am surprised that they did not update the foam in Ghost 15. They are moving really really slow.

    Tried this at the running store, it's crazy this thing doesn't have a supermax stack but it feels like it to me because of how beefy that midsole is. I'm not an ultra runner, but if I were, the caldera would probably be my first choice for a long run shoe, and it's partially because of the girth.
    I don't know if these widened midsoles are necessary in every shoe, and I wish some would stay a little slimmer. However, I love it in the caldera because I really don't want to roll an ankle over a narrow slab of foam on rocky or rooty trails.

    The first shoe I bought was a caldera. I like the look of it. Turned out to be a womens shoe, but I loved it! This was before I knew about gait and all that stuff!

    Loved the 4s, I won a pair a few years back and didn't think I'd take to them, as my go to trail shoe is a completely different animal (Salomon S LAB Speed - nearly 500 miles, but now discontinued!). The Caldera really threw me it's plush, bouncy and rugged. I'd be intrigued to have a go in these guys as they look like trampolines! Will probably alternate this winter between the Speeds, the Calderas and a new gem of a shoe I unearthed at the local New Balance outlet - the Hierro. Looking forward to hitting the trails soon!

    I just sold my pair a few days ago. I bought them hoping they would be great and just couldn't like them no matter how hard I tried lol. However, the two best trail running issues in terms of comfort I've worn this year are the Nike Pegasus trail 4's and the New balance fresh foam hierro v7's which have the same vibram mega grip found on the speedgoat 5's. Seth, I recommend you try both of those shoes. I think you'd enjoy them very much so based on your previous trail running reviews.

    I’m a fan of the Caldera 6. I normally don’t prefer the dense/thick cushioning but the comfort, durability, and wide sole make it a good option for longer mountain trail runs. I went from the Hoka Speedgoat 4 (I really liked them, put 400 miles in them) and like the Caldera 6 a bit more.

    QoD: When dry I like to use the Peg Trail 4, very comfortable. When not dry, I like the Xodus Ultra, which has a much better grip but still has a great/comfy midsole. Did a 30mile/6hr run in them and no problems in terms of comfort at all. Just a black toe nail!

    QD: this winter, ill go with the Speed Goat 5, Glideride and NB fresh foam more v1. The last 2 are getting up in mileage so was actually thinking to pick up the Caldera. Seems like a solid shoe. 👟👟

    I tried the Caldera on yesterday at our local REI and I also found it to be too bulky under step. I’m leaning towards the Speedgoat 5 for my next trail shoe but hoping to find it on sale

  • @Ecologyontherun

    I will start off races with an Altra Timp or Speedgoat then switch to these at the halfway point of 50k+ races. The midsole foam and bounciness is great when legs start needing a little more pep!

    :QD: honestly, I don’t know. I’ll probably be in the dog house if I buy any more shoes until at least 2023. I bought 3 trail pair in the summer of 2022 and while I really want a new pair, I’ve got a few hundred miles left on my existing rotation: NB Fresh Foam More Trail, Hoka Speedgoat 5, and Salomon UltraGlide. Bottom line, these trail shoe reviews are making me excited for my next pair!! 🎉

    I think shoe reviews have to consider the shoes' use case. We choose our shoes on any given day based on the conditions and what we hope to accomplish. For example, if I want speed and precision, I will use my Kjerags. If I want to just get miles in -- and that may include pavement -- I will use the Caldera 6. [And when I mean miles, I mean miles.]. The funny thing is that the Caldera 6 is a lot like the Speedland GS:TAM -- which means it probably would work for some ultras (and costs half what the Speedland costs). That doesn't seem like a 6/10 shoe to me -- it just means it is a shoe with a specific purpose and use case.

  • @KidTempered
    @KidTempered ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This shoe is so unstable on rocks and paths. So much lateral movement inside the caldera 6 that it makes it dangerous for my ankles.
    Perfect for buffed trails and even grounds though.
    Mind what you purchase it for 🖖🏼

    Just did a 200-mile race, first half in the Hoka Tecton X, second in the NNormal Tomir. This new shoe (from Camper in Spain) has a firmer ride that can be eased with the Inov8 Boomerang footbeds. It is light, durable and versatile. Traction is outstanding. The Tomir has a water resistant version that will be my go-to for winter trails with light snow. For ice and deeper snow, the VJ Ice Hero is my favorite.

    QD: (these are my winter trail running shoes): I'm using these training for the Ouachita Switchbacks 50k in January (Ouachita Mountains in Eastern Oklahoma) after switching to them backpacking 1100 + miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. I love these shoes! So much cushion, and great grip f You kind of "sit down" in the shoe, so, to me, it doesn't feel as thick as it is. My first pair I wore 600 miles and they were still in pretty good shape when I replaced them. I feel these are a GREAT backpacking shoe that transitions well to a pretty technical (4763 feet of gain) winter ultra I will be running, not at a great pace (my first ultra marathon!)

    • @Kirmukarmu
      @Kirmukarmu ปีที่แล้ว

      hows the weather protection, does your feet get wet with these? i know these dont have gtx but im thinking to buy these for the winter runs

    • @terranceandcopper
      @terranceandcopper ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kirmukarmu I haven't really used these in foul weather. I did a stream crossing in them and they dried very quickly. also, let a lot of dust in, so I would think not great. However, light snow/mud should be fine as the stack height is so high.

      Absolutely! I am from northern Indiana, right in the middle of the lake effect snow band, and spent most of the last two winters road running in trail shoes. I used Caldera 4s and Xodus 10s/11s, with a sprinkling of Salomon Pulsar last winter. Good luck!

    Oh really wanted to love it, but in a hot climate the upper is narrow, quite restrictive and just doesn’t drain. Pools sweat! Foam is wonderful for any terrain but has none of that control you want on technical trails. Grip is average, it works, but nothing on Salomon.

    Caldera 4 was pretty good (toebox space), but this one is just ridiculous when it comes to the purpose it was designed fot: long runs. Only if you come from such toe squeezers as speedgoats or speedcrosses, will you find this one comfy enough for ultras.
