    Body
South Island covers an area of 150,437 square kilometers. It has a 32 percent greater landmass than the North Island and is commonly referred to as New Zealand's "mainland," as it is home to only 23 percent of the country's 4.7 million people. South Island is an island with a homogenous population of 1,196,000 residents as per the 2021 Census.
What is the best time to visit South Island?
It is all about preferences if you prefer milder whether you should visit the South Island between January and February, as these are the warmest month on the Southern Island. But if you enjoy cold weather and snow, and are fond of winter sports like skiing, then the time June through to September will be perfect.
Now, let’s talk about the attractions in South Island that are a must-see.
Lake Tekapo is one of the South Island's main attractions. It covers an area of 83 square kilometers and is located at an elevation of 710 meters above sea level. Lake Tekapo is the second-largest of three roughly parallel lakes that run north-south along the northern edge of New Zealand's Mackenzie Basin on the South Island. Everything about this Lake is Heavenly, from the lovely turquoise water to the towering mountains in the background and the beautiful flora, which all add to its unending beauty and draw visitors from all over the world. The night sky from Lake Tekapo is the most beautiful. It boasts many good viewing areas, restaurants with good food, and friendly people. Furthermore, your desktop wallpaper also has a picture of this gorgeous lake.
Kaiteriteri Beach is regarded as one of the greatest in New Zealand. This beach's scenery is really spectacular. You can go for a swim because the water temperature is moderate and perfect for diving. If you dislike crowds, try to arrive before 10 a.m. to appreciate the quaint environment while listening to the calming sound of the waves. The sand is so soft and pleasant that it feels like you're walking on a cloud. This beach includes plenty of parking as well as restrooms.
Another must-see sight on South Island is the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. They are situated in the heart of Christchurch. The Gardens cover 21 hectares and are located adjacent to the Avon River's loop, next to Hagley Park. The botanic garden has a diverse array of exotic and native species. The best time to visit these gardens is in the spring when the flowers are in full bloom and spread a rainbow of hues. The variety of roses in the Rose Garden will amaze you. Aside from that, it is child-friendly, including a playground and a small pool for your kids to enjoy. Furthermore, these gardens create an excellent backdrop for photographs.
It would be an injustice to the South Island if you did not visit the glaciers there. Franz Josef Glacier is a 12-kilometer-long temperate marine glacier in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on New Zealand's South Island's West Coast. Visiting this glacier is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You don't get to walk on glaciers daily, do you? A helicopter trip is an absolute must-do while visiting this glacier. It is a little pricey, but the staggeringly beautiful view is well worth the money. Hiking would be an unforgettable experience here. You'll also be able to witness the visible effects of climate change on this glacier.
The other Glacier that is a must-see is Fox Glacier. You can either walk to the base of the glacier or get a helicopter ride. Try to see the beauty of this glacier from as many viewpoints as you can.
