Guy next to me at the driving range had one of these. Got to chatting and he insisted I try it. Hit a few chips, then pitches, then some fuller shots. I must say; the thing is ugly but it was money. Super easy to hit, crisp, no duffs. Try it, you may want one

I used to use a chipper until last year; I was really struggling with a wedge off and around the green and the chipper saved me strokes. I didn’t feel embarrassed, nor did I feel like I was cheating. People might frown upon it, but it helped me immensely👍

Hi, I've bought one, 45 degrees and it works from the start, I would'nt use it for more than 50 Yards, but around the green without obstacles , great! Never mind what people are saying, to be consistant is the best argument! I've got 16 and I'm not ashamed to use this thing. I've got all 4 original niblicks from Cleveland in the shed. (37,42,49,56). Regularly put the 42 and 56 in the bag together. Have even gamed the 37 too. So easy to hit. Almost foolproof. People I'm playing against in the society games used to scoff but don't any more. You can just attack pins with these. I've chipped in with my 42 and 56. I've put them to inches from 90 odd yards. They're as they say in 'merca, MONEY.

I think it shouldn’t replace one of ur 3 wedges. Rather, it is a stand alone chip club. 14 clubs is more than enough clubs to accommodate room for this type of club.

For sure, I’ve been looking at upgrading my irons, I have a driving 3 iron that has 18° loft, and most 4 irons these days are similar in loft, so I don’t need a 4 in the bag, and with D, 3W, 3I, 5-Lob, P that’s only 13 clubs, so I could bag a chipper and not have any real gaps

  • @Keef-cd9os

So, we have SGI irons with jacked up lofts, adjustable drivers with draw settings, super high moi putters with longer shafts if we like that sort of thing, GPS range finders and the list goes on. Someone pulls out a chipper and they're the antichrist! Maybe we should all go back to blades and persimmon woods and play this game how it was intended.

@@stevesullivan9752 yeah a complete hybrid iron set is kimda wack ngl.. miss out on alot of ball feel but having a hybrid lets say 3iron as a rescue club for height and distance. I dont mind ppl having 1 rescue in the bag can help in certain situations.. but yeah a complete hybrid iron set could be hindering your game by playing more forgiving vs blade like clubs or pure blades wich require consistency and you can get much more creative and play w the loft much more. If you switch to tour preferred irons after getting good w blades you will be puring everything

I play the 2011 (legal grooves) Cleveland Niblick 42* and 56* wedges. They're USGA/R&A legal and cover my complete short game. And make no apologies. True story: Not too long ago, my wife and I were paired with another husband/wife twosome at our local club. By the turn, I had chipped in once with the Niblick 42* and had tap-ins on two other holes. At that point, his wife said, "I wanted to get one of those; I have so much trouble around the greens" (and she did that day as well). At which point the husband said, "But I wanted to make sure she learned how to play REAL golf." I responded, "You mean, instead of scoring better and enjoying the round." He didn't talk to me the rest of the day. Meanwhile, MY wife was her usual deadly self from off the green with her Odyssey Tank chipper. It's a pastime, folks. There's no pictures on the scorecard and you score no points in golf because you make it more difficult.

I carry the Cleveland Niblick 42* as well, and have done so for several years. I have had great success with it, but I haven't been able to convince any of my friends to add one to their bag. I purchased one for my brother after he had lost all confidence in his wedge game, and I think he brought it to the course twice before returning to his old unreliable but familiar wedge. I don't know why, but people resist playing with this type of club.

The club can be used for so many shots closing the face or opening it. Its so versatile. For bump and runs I use Cobra F9 one length rescue phenomenal club! Great video Andy.

Just watched this. Nice. I’m a single figured handicap golfer approaching 50. I’ve recently taken out my most lofted club, 60 degrees, to make way for a chip and run club. Basically a putter with a 7 iron face. Hasn’t improved my handicap, however, it is much more consistent for me, plus I’d rarely use the lob wedge. I love my 54 so this one stays in the bag. 👍😎🇦🇺

I struggled with wedges for a little while. Now that I’ve put in the time to practice with them, I can hit a few different shots around the green. I’m a weekend golfer like most, and I’d say just put in the time with your wedges and you’ll figure it out. I can hit full/ 3/4 swing shots, mid flighted shots with some roll out, and decently high shots that 1 hop stop.
Finding the right bounce helped a lot too. I ended up going with lower bounce clubs because the fairways are firm here in Texas.

I'm not sure why people scoff at these clubs. The niblick style chippers are one of the oldest and most traditional clubs used since the game was created. Personally, I don't think they are meant to be used from 80y out, they are too upright. You are better off with a Cleveland Smart Sole S which is more like a traditional wedge but with a massive bounce sole and is meant to be played square. I carry two CBX2 wedges in the bag along with a Cleveland C wedge with the smart sole. The C wedges are amazing around the greens and being upright you can put a putting stroke on it. I agree, if you are going to pick one and eliminate all your other wedges, you may want to go with a mazel 55 but I'm not sure how good it would be from a bunker.
The funniest guys on the course are the average golfers with Vokey 60*, 4* bounce wedges that think they have the Phil Mickelson talent of hitting all the fancy shots. Those guys are usually costing themselves 5-6 shots a round.

I’m comfortable with my wedges because I practice most days chipping. However I would consider getting one of these for links golf or for those little bump & runs instead of my 9 iron. I’m a 9 handicap golfer so I’ll get the piss taken out of me for sure but so what.

The only odd ball club I own is the Callaway Sure Out s/w. It actually works well around the green but haven't had a chance to work with it much out of sand as our bunkers have been so wet with all the rain we have been getting. So jury is still out on whether I will actually ever put it in play. Will never buy the club Andy is using here. Not buying one of those stand up putters either that you can leave standing up so you can look behind the ball. Ha.

i think people struggle coz they have too much bounce take the 46 sm6 it came in a 6 8 and 10 bounce,,the sm8 46 only comes in a 10 bounce..which is alot for us in the UK ..summer fairways are like concrete..so you will have to have your hands miles infront like phil mickelson..last time i checked..he was the only human that can play in that way my pw has a 6 bounce mp5.. a 46 with a 10 bounce is crazy..unless you play in america with super soft turf

I have tried a chipper a few times over the years.
I would go back to it if they made one that put NO SPIN on the ball.
I ran into times when it would check and then not check.
I did not try full or 3/4 swings

Sam Goddard the single faced chipper is legal, double faced is illegal from what ive seen. Older chippers like wedges will be illegal because of the grooves.

Darren Payce oh that’s awesome then! Luckily it’s a stronger part of my game (my weakness is irons into the green so I have to be half decent!) but it’s nice to know there’s help out there for those who struggle. Still only about 5% of the clubs work in my opinion it depends more on the players ability but 5% is 5%!

Looking a little bit different is one thing, but that green on it, but yours is black, looks like plastic, and it looks like a childs toy. I am not going anywhere hear it. Its just damn ugly. You need one of those when you cannot use a regular wedge., which I have no issues with. NO pro shop would ever carry that thing. I would bet that too many are using a wedge with waaaaay too little bounce. My wedges and pyu putter are the best club sin by mag, and everyone hates it when I am just off the green. But my wedges have way more bounce than most peoples. My 60 as a 14, my 56 is a 12 and my 50 is a 12. You guys using a 60 degree wedge with 8 degrees of bounce are not using enough. I see these for sale all the time, and what do people do???? Someone advertises a wedge, and someone else buys it and never asks what bounce it is. I bet that ugly club has plenty of bounce built in and nobody knows because they have never been a club builder like me, and they just never think about it, but it is as important as the loft, and nobody knows what they have in their bag. I will ask these guys just to see what they know, when the have a wedge for sale, I will ask what the bounce is, and they tell me the grind, which is not the bounce, so they have no idea, and I would bet 75% of you have no idea either. There is no data on the exact bounce angle other than people saying it has a lot of bounce. There is no number to put to it, so maybe someone that can measure bounce can measure one and see.
David Duval one gave a short game tip show on The Golf Channel, and he carries 2 wedges, a 58 and a 52. His 58 had a whopping 17 degrees of bounce and his 52 had 18. And I thought my 60/14 was way more than others. And today, finding a 60/14 is next to impossible. The wedge makers are going in the wrong direction with this and now we have these clubs that look like children's toys. So if you think you need to play what the pros use, don't forget about this pro, David Duval, and how much bounce he uses.
