  • Welcome. Today we are in Belfast Ireland where we tag along for an emergency blood transport. The transport is extremely urgent and therefore done by bike. We start of at the Belfast Mater Hospital and make our way to the Royal Victoria Hospital, which is about 2 kilometers away.
It is 8 pm and traffic is quite heavy in the streets of Belfast. Transports like this one often concern blood samples that are transported to the nearest lab for analyses. For example a patient that needs certain medication but doctors are unsure about the type and dose, so a prompt analysis can make the difference between life and death.
    4:08 Second ride
The second ride, our biker transports emergency blood for a transfusion. He needs to get back to the Mater Hospital as fast as possible.
After strapping the case with blood firmly on to his motorbike we take off.

We used to have these in England but last year the government outlawed the use of lights & sirens on these bikes after an accident involving a blood biker who was using lights & siren.

Blood bikers in the uk are usually volunteers and they do an amazing job, there called out at any time of day and in all weathers and they live doing it, just think of all the lives saved tha ks to them using bikes instead of other vehicle's like cars which can be really slowed down even with light traffic on the roads, keep up the good work blood bikers

Brilliant watching these bikers do there job. Just a pity that people are slow reacting . Unlike other drivers abroad who are taught to give way to approaching emergency vehicles or risk a hefty fine

Get this rider some Rok Straps! I've seen other YT vids describing these volunteers who provide this service. Great job mates!

Uber for blood and medications. You don't get good tips, but can use some funky lights and loud sirens.

Was that a Triumph Tiger? It sounded like one. If it was, they're awesome bikes, ideal for that purpose.

That's really interesting. We used to have Red Cross station wagons with red lights for such work in Brisbane, Australia but I haven't seen those for many years.

Ich finde das es mit den Motorad sehr schnell geht, wie so nehmen andere Länder das nicht als Beispiel an (Danke das du denn Timmer nicht vergessen hast)

Most of the emergency delivery riders in the UK are volunteers, I believe some own their own emergency bikes which of course can only be used for this type of work. Other bikes are donation's or funded by collections, control stations are set up in living room garages etc. and manned by spouses etc. making it a family affair of the best kind.
Sadly they have to deal with all those motorists who never check their mirrors on a regular basis, or only when they want to signal their intention. Often not even then.

More likely that the blood is a rare donated type and required for a transfusion elsewhere.
