I live in the neighbourhood and walk past his house daily and the walk always fills me with great sadness. As a life- long Queen fan since the age of 13 (now in my 40s), I am terribly sad that he died so young and we lost an amazing human being and an incredible musician. Queen's music has had a profoundly transformative impact on my life and I feel privileged to live in Kensington and walk the same streets as he did. Not a day passes by without me thinking of him and of Mary, living in the house now. It is always quiet in the street when I come by, I so wish I have a chance to meet some of the fans who clearly visit regularly judging by comments I have seen on TH-cam so we could chat about the music and remember Freddie together!

Instead of Mary selling everything she should make it into a museum with all his personal possessions on show. I don’t think anyone would mind paying to get in and see his beloved home. I’m sure she could donate moneys to the aids charity and other charity’s. I think his and Queens fans deserve it.
I've been thinking exactly the same thoughts ever since I heard that Mary Austin was selling everything at auction. I'm also wondering just how long will it be until Freddie Mercury's mansion is sold and what happens to it next.
While my heart agrees with you, not sure it's legally that simple. I doubt that ritzy area of London would want to turn a quiet street into a tourist attraction. Plus who will run it and maintain it? Plus, Garden Lodge was known as his private sanctuary, so maybe it's as simple as those who knew Freddie knowing he wouldn't want it to be Graceland UK. (look at the problems THE Graceland has presented). And I personally am concerned about Mary's well being. After living there so quietly and privately for so long, to all of a sudden plan to sell the house and all it's contents concerns me. Now that said, I do wonder if Sir Bri and Roger were contacted and offered the Queen memorabilia ie the handwritten lyrics, instruments etc. Because if there is to be any public type display for the group, I would imagine they all should be the ones behind it. I hope it's that they want their music to be their legacy. It does seem a shame for so much to be broken up. And with the value of just the rest of the contents & her portion of Queen income, Mary should have ample money to support her family for generations. Although a portion of the auction is going to charity. So I can see many sides.
@@ellenw391 I was looking at the Sotheby's website at the Freddie Mercury items that make up the sale, a couple of days ago, and its really focused on those individuals who have very deep pockets. I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if Bryan May and Roger Taylor purchased something. I was really surprised that there were so many items and collections within those. Mary Austin has said in one interview somewhere on You Tube that she had made at least three requests to the council to have a statue of Freddie Mercury erected in the neighbourhood but they were against that idea. I too wonder what the reasons are for selling all of the items that Freddie spent a lifetime collecting I'm sure that Mary Austin has her reasons but the royalty cheques that come in from just the music that still sells, should have been invested without having to sell Freddie's items.
Freddie Mercury did not want his home turned into a museum. Garden Lodge was his sanctuary and he never wanted it to be opened to the public. Mary Austin inherited Freddie's estate which included his home and all of his possesions and she cared for his items for 32 years. Mary honored Freddis's wishes by keeping his home a private family home and by selling his items to the public so they will be loved and admired by their new owners. If Freddie wanted to leave any of HIS "Queen related" items to the other members of the band he would have given them personally or bequeathed them in his will. Freddie's fans, especially the "newer" ones seem to think they are entitled to his items and also to post tributes about him on the walls of his former home. Garden Lodge is not a shrine. By turning it into one people are doing the EXACT OPPOSITE of what Freddie wanted 1 Logan Place to be. He wanted Garden Lodge to always be alive as a home with a family living in it. There is a museum dedicated to Queen in Montreaux Switzerland where former costumes, instruments and other assorted memorabilia are on display. Visitors and fans are allowed to leave tributes to Freddie and messages to the other band members on the exterior of the building. Somehow Freddie's legacy: HIS MUSIC isn't enough for people these days and they somehow feel they "deserve" something more. Nobody has the "right" to: tour his former home, deface the walls of his former home with graffiti, view his piano or written poems, lyrics, sheet music, paintings, glassware, t-shirts, shoes, table linens, statues, silverware, awards, ashtrays, suitcases, stage costumes, cat figurines, kimonos or anything else the man left behind. To those who say insulting ugly things about Mary Austin: Freddie would detest anyone who insulted the love of his life.

If he wasn't Asian the establishment would have created a monument in Kensington in his honour but the Kensington Borough that treats the Grenville Tower block survivors with such contempt because they are foreign, Indians and Arabs like Mercury would never condone a Memoriam for either of them. Covert racism at its best. Well done Kensington Borough.
