You really have to go back and review the e60 in p500 mode. It’s not just an extra 25% horsepower bump it’s how sharp the throttle response becomes and the way it revs is incredible. I own a 6speed M5 and they are what I think is the best driving experience you can have with four doors. Not fastest, but best overall experience.
The e60 6mt comes from the 545i or the 550i. The gears are definitely longer than the 7 speed smg. Also an extra 100hp would have definitely helped haha.
I have a manual E63 M6 2009, and driving that car in the normal mode is like driving a Toyota Camry. But the power button makes all the difference and it turns into a savage. Definitely drive it again with the power button on!
Love the ///M5 content! After owing and “commuting” from SoCal to NorCal for about 500,000 miles across multiple generations of m5s, the two generations that remain in my garage are my e28m5 and e60m5 6MT w/a 3.91 diff. If you’re ever in SoCal and want to drive an e60 6MT w/a 3.91 and MCS 2Way let me know. My e60 is equally happy on HWY 1 through Big Sur, cruising The 5, or jumping the Bus Stop at Buttonwillow.
There's a reason the 6-speed was only available in the US...the market demanded it yet the gearbox is straight out of a car that only revs to 6.5k so the gear ratios are all wrong. A shorter final drive would drastically increase the fun in the manual but I think you'd be better off trying an SMG car to see how BMW really intended the car to be. The SMG gearbox might be a bit clunky and not the fastest but the gear ratios much better suit the engine.
Trust me. After I realized I hadn't pressed it, I was screaming at myself. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a quick tour of the controls by the owner before hopping in.
I love my 2020 M5 competition. It has the twin turbo 4.4 V8 but with 607 hp and all wheel drive. It is blistering fast! My best 0-60 time was 2.8 seconds and 1/4 mile in 10.82 at 130 mph. It handles great to me. I had an Audi S4 and the M5 to me cornered flatter and had better braking and definitely better acceleration.
Oh man. Without the 500 and power setting on the s85, it really feels lackluster. Hardly a fair comparison. Never a moment it wasn't on in my m6 manual
what a massive fail... doing a M5 Generation comparison and not driving the E60 with the full 500 hp. Also, i believe that driving an SMG3 car is more aggressive than the manual due to gearing and how hard the gears connect.
From what I hear, the manual on the e60 should have a different diff gear ratio to match how the SMG drives. I'm not sure if that improves the issue with the gears being too long. But I do agree that the flywheel for both the manual and the SMG on the e60 m5 is too heavy. Would be nice if it was similar to the e9x m3s. Also to note, the retrofitted center display looks out of place in the e60 m5.
Ugh, noooo. What a shame that it got left in 400hp mode, which only partially opens the throttles. Without pressing the M button, you don't get the full induction or exhaust note, not to mention 107 less HP. I really thought the E60 would be the overall winner, but now it's kind of invalidated. Oh well, just an excuse to get to drive another E60 M5 manual in the future Zygrene 😂
Going back and catching up on these because I think I'm itching to make a terrible decision and get an E60 M5. I would have to know I could put in a tighter final drive to fix the long gearing since this car was designed to have 7 gears.
I can't believe you didn't push the M button and drove around in 400bhp nanny mode 😱 Do you not remember the Jeremy Clarkson review back in 2005, where he goes on and on about that M button and its transformation? It is literally a different car when in p500 mode, faster throttle response, power, and sharper handling. IMO, this car was never designed to have the manual. The 7 speed SMG suits the car, shorter gearing and much higher top speed. The manual is out of a 645i and never suited this vehicle. The shifts with the SMG are savage and really add to the experience when on it. Yes, the SMG is not the most reliable, but it matches how the engineers designed the car. My advice, retest the car with the SMG. If you're in Texas, hit me up and you can use mine. Other than the huge (massive) E60 Faux-pas, the 3 vodeo series was great.
To be fair, the F10 in the still shots is different than the one being driven (the one being driven is my mother's car). The one he was driving is wearing Pilot Super Sports all around.

Oh nooo, I was thinking "I hope he presses the 500hp button" when you started the E60 review omg
And even gave the E39 a run for its money even with 400 hp :D
We need another review with that E60! You didn't get the full experience without the power button on. in the 400hp mode it feels substantially slower.

This. The whole personality of the car changes --- absolutely need a redo on this one.... I think he should pin a comment about this.
All Ten throttle bodies are singing "Harmoniously". I'm glad that you got to experience the E60. Especially the rare 6-speed manual variant.

@@MrXerxes Yeah, we are going to try to make it happen👍🏽
Glad you enjoyed the e60 with only 400hp, especially considering the hate the e60 generation gets!
Is that a movie playing on the e60 center screen? 😂
Yup. I didn't have time to figure out how to turn it off
I definitely think the e90/e60 era had my fav interior materials for the 'modern' BMWs

Exactlyyy
E60 M5 actually weighs 4200+ lbs. The F10 was weighed around 4400 lbs by MT.
How do you not go back and review the e60 correctly? Totally tainted.

The gearing is long though. They used the same diff/final drive as the smg 7 speed. It is popular to shorten the final drive for more torque

around the 7 minute mark we can see that the lane keeping assist is turned on, didnt that make the steering feel twitchi?
E60 is the best in terms of performance with it's V10 Engine. I wish it was more reliable.
The E60 might not feel much faster than an E39, but it will absolutely leave it for dead in reality.
