When the E60 was released it was so ahead of its time. Everyone thought it was ugly. But now, 11 years later.. it still looks modern!
I remember the first time ever saw it here in Egypt 2005, I thought it is the most beautiful car ever, still see it like this even today 💜

I have never thought of the E60 as being ugly, I saw it for the first time around 2003-2004 here in the Netherlands, and it blew my mind. Everyone has their own taste i guess!

The Jaguar XE-S does 4.9 on a supercharged V6 and corners better, sounds pretty nice and bills far lower (less than half as much); it may even pip this beast around a track. But I agree, you cannot replace the drama of a V10; we still wait, maybe Porsche to accommodate in a newer Panamera?

Back when I couldn't afford an E60 M5, I watched this Top Gear segment when it came out. Now in 2024, owning a 2009 E60 M5 in 6-speed manual for years, I've replayed that review over 50 times. It made me smile every single time. It's still one of the best car reviews, and I feel so blessed to own this epic BMW. Thank you Clarkson. Thank you Top Gear.

I’ve got an e60 m5 as well. It’s just such a special car.
It needs a lot of love, care and attention- but it’s just awesome to own and drive..
I keep it wrapped up and only taken out on longer trips in nice weather, but it turns that trip into a special occasion

Ngl. I used to work for BMW and the first time I drove one of these E60 M5s, I played this review off my phone through the Bluetooth and hit that M-button when he said that line. One of the greatest motoring feelings I’ve ever had.

Conversely I think this was the WORST car review I have ever seen and the ending was totally predictable.

Ikr i fully agree; his German 'banter' was so forced, you could tell how salty he actually was that the British automotive industry died and the Germans did conquer after all. Even Tata took his Jag away. As you perfectly said; at times he was really funny but he always had that autist complex in him , and ended up transforming into the full hooligan over lunchtime one day eventually

***** it's a beast!!! the only thing i don't like is the radio/music set-up. it does have bluetooth nor usb ports. this is before the current age of smartphones of course but other than that! i love it. i have it black with the black rims. I'm getting the tints next weekend. if you can find one get it. i had people looking at me like "whoa" i even had someone honk at me as a nod! get it!!!!

Dillon Harper the car is dope! luckily everything was changed before I purchased mine. You will have onlookers sweating the car because they know what it is. The ones that don't know will find out when you smoke them. I love the car. its a gas guzzler though. so unless you have secondary car you will spend a lot and I mean a lot of money on gas. I only drive mine on the weekends or when im feelin cool during the week other than I keep it parked up. its the risk you run when buying used car. the good thing about this car is that when youre done you still going to make money on it because its a M5. ayo add me on G+ and will give my number to give you more info on the car. Sebastian Shaw the M5 all day! the resale value i would assume would be far much greater on the M5. sorry I'm not able to go in-depth because I'm watching videos on the shooting in cali. i will have more to say after i watch some of that but on the real the m5 is where its at. the gas consumption is a mother though. think about that.

After two and a half years of daily driving and tracking my E60 M5, I still love coming back to these videos every few months. The sound of the downshift at 1:07 still gives me chills to this day. She's been a costly thing, but worth every penny.

The ultimate M5 would be the gearbox from the F10, but the engine from the E60

The F10 is better car all round. But the E60 is more exciting and it's the one to buy.

This video was the single reason I got the M8 Competition last year. It still is such a dominating and overwhelming experience, even without the V10 (but 118hp more).
I've got on 06 M5 and can say that Clarkson's review was spot on...except for not being able to cancel the turn signals and nav voice (which are actually easy to do). It IS slow and dim-witted around town, rolls back and forth (due to the SMG), and is overly complicated with the iDrive. The standard P400 feels like a lot less than 400 hp, and driving around town it almost feels and sounds like a 4 cylinder car with the lack of torque and tinny exhaust note at lower RPMs. It doesn't remotely feel like an M5 until put into P500 Sport and getting the RPM's over 5000, at which point it becomes a monster and the exhaust note becomes glorious. His opinion of the car was exactly the same as mine the first time I drove it and until I got used to its quirkiness. This is 100% a drivers car, and not for the faint hearted. Probably explains why my wife absolutely hates it.

Honestly I don't think the SMG is that bad. It's certainly not super smooth, but I drive my wife/kid around all the time and they don't complain. It is tricky though and takes a while to get used to. The hill assist helps a ton with not rolling backwards/forwards, but it only holds for 1 second so you need to be moving as soon as you're off the brakes.
It's all worth it though, this car is just incredible, I still can't believe I drive one every day.

I just sold mine, they are plummeting in value yet parts are still obscenely expensive and time consuming (expensive) to install...I have no love for any of the new BMWs, so after 20+ years I am done with the marque.

Thats sort of a silly comment as the E90 M3's motor is effectively an S85 V10 with two cylinders lopped off...All the same issues, rod bearings, throttle actuators, even has a very simmaler SMG transmission if so equipped...

People that have never driven this amazing car have no idea what they’re talking about!! You cannot judge a car without driving one! I’ve own many BMW’s and this is truly the best most exotic M5 ever made and the V10 makes it even more one of its kind!! I will always keep this awesome machine!!

It does look ugly at first glance but this was in 2005 even when I thought the design was a bit daring. But now the design is beautiful, its gotten better with age and looks better than most modern cars, its a timeless classic. I've only see 2 of these on the road
When they first came out, I was a bit skeptical and thought it looked okay. I was also too young and broke to own one so I didnt even care. Now here we are 10 years later, and I bought one... and I have to say, it is a true dream car. The body lines are insanely gorgeous and grow on me more and more everytime I walk out to drive it.

And it's still relevant today; BMW M5's have only gotten uglier both in terms of looks and noise. It's still the only proper 4-door saloon with a thunderous V10 in it. I totally disagree with him on the looks, there was something very artisanal and iconic about those swoopy headlamps; just that the front grill wasn't aggressive enough but it strangley suited the car; the whole thing had a strangely elegant forme. Since 2010's 'F' gen, they obviously stole it's soul

It's funny how when these cars were new, many people said they were ugly and over-complex. Now compared to some modern BMWs it is quite beautiful! Also compared to what else was available in 2005 it looks positively futuristic. Strange how time can work wonders for a car's appeal.

Of the three this is my favorite presentation. Jeremy outdid himself with this one. Bmw themselves could not have done a better presentation. He was realistic with the cons in the beginning, then slams you with the car's strongest asset. His choice of words was the icing on the cake. " but with the push of a button, it becomes the very best. It becomes a M5." A masterpiece, Jeremy a masterpiece
so much this, one of the best and most emotional car reviews ever... Just like some romantic crap in movies makes girls cry, this made me, a 95kg 190cm tall man genuinely shed a tear. this car is maybe the last scream of motoring insanity from BMW, remember that... it's high on my list of dream cars. Purebred racing V10 and that tough, not really friendly gearbox that works good only when you drive like a maniac... As Jeremy would say, WHAT A MACHINE.

I remember watching this in 4th grade. I knew I wanted this or an E92 M3 one day. In Jan of 2019 I finally found my dream M5. Picked up a 2008 Monaco Blue E60 M5. I am so in love with this machine. It is remarkable. Definitely not your average car.

I don't understand the ugly comments. From the moment I saw the E60 for the first time, I thought it was beautiful. I still think it looks amazing, but the V10 is the star of the show. You just don't see engineering like that anymore.

This car was unveiled in early 2005, that means the technology was being produce during early 2000's...Interesting right?
Rozgreez The e60 has a much better (lower) drag coefficient (and likely smaller frontal area, not sure) than the Charger.
Top speed is about HP, CD, and frontal area, primarily. Weight, as well, to some extent. The M5 also weighs less than the Charger Hellcat, I presume?

@@aleksuks yeah it is but I owned one and in that short period of time it'd become a nightmare rather than rewarding. Because that engine is the main problem it can fail any time sure it sound mind blowing and always put a giggle to my face but that giggle turn into criyng in no time
I've owned a 2007 M5 for 4 years now. A true 3-pedal manual with only 57K miles. Besides Clarkson's entertaining review, I can add in this: I've had zero mechanical issues but I also don't thrash it around either. It needs to warm up before you step on it. But once it gets going, it'll give you goosebumps from the sheer joy of driving it.

13 years later, it still blows my mind that BMW made a road going 5 Series capable of doing 204mph. This M5 was so out of this world in 2005, and even now it seems outrageous.

It's really very strange in that when it was released, it was kind of ahead of its time. At first, everyone said it was ugly, but soon, everybody loved that sort of design and everybody making sedans tried to copy it. Funny how that worked :P

Chris Bangle creates a timeless facade with this M5. Nowadays BMW is more conservative in their design language, and it’s a shame because Bangle’s Bimmers have character in their looks, which is something we probably won’t see any time soon
I finally pulled the trigger on one of these 2 or 3 months back. 2007 touring model. I'm glad that the good Lord had me wait till I was a bit more mature and doing better with my career before I bought one of these. It's not gone wrong on me or anything (yet), but it's absolutely not a car that you can buy and expect your maintenance schedule to merely be yearly oil changes. As a car to drive - the engine is a peach. It's wonderful. A little bit weak down low but that can be tuned out...they intentionally made it rather limp under 3000rpm so that you get a sudden surge after 3000rpm. The top end after 6000rpm is pretty damn special. It's pretty much on par with a W204 C63 (facelift) in terms of straight line performance. Two main flaws I think the car has - 1) the SMG transmission....takes a lot of getting used to (it's not quite like a normal auto box) and personally I'd prefer a manual (which I'm getting soon) 2) the weight of the car. You really do feel as though you're driving something verrry nose heavy, so spirited driving on the roads must be done with a lot of caution. Amazing in a straight line though.

I've been thinking about buying an E46 M3, took one for a test drive and it is just the most astonishing thing ever. The only thing that can even compare that I've driven is a Ferrari 360 Spider.

It was ugly in 2004 because the perception of people at that time was influenced by shy and ugly design from brands like Renault, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Lexus, GM, Audi.
We are 2023, and the E60 LCI is still one of the best looking cars in the world. To the point BMW started shifting back to its design, in G30 LCI.
Rod bearings, Throttle actuators, SMG bits, Obscenely Expensive brakes, VANOS, Extremely hard to service, Atrocious fuel consumption, Taste for expensive synth oil, Absolutely rubbish dealer network, Self cooking headlights...The list goes on and on: In decades most of these will be gone (including mine as i sold it to a kid who i KNOW cant afford to maintain it properly) as they get scrapped for repairs costing more than the car is worth (they are falling into the teens now-originally nearly $100K)...Those with the know how and money to keep them alive will have a classic in the future, but for now they are an albatross...

@@StaticMZR a b16 is a simple 4 banger that makes decent power but is known to be very reliable, this m5 however has a highly strung and complicated V10 that costs a fortune to maintain to the level it actually needs to run well, these things are gonna disappear one irresponsible driver at a time

No BMW before or since has sounded better or looked better in my opinion. This is my ultimate dream car to have 5 of for when one spins it's rodbearings
Here's what BMW need to do to dominate all others
1. Build a Twin Turbo V10 for the M5/M6 (around 650hp, 800NM)
2. Make it light as possible (under 1,700KG)
3. 0-60 target time (around 3,5s)
4. No sound pumping to the interior
5. Top speed (200mph+)
I believe BMW can do it.
The weight is a stretch for the M5, you can't have the performance for the 2 be the same, and performance isn't everything. As you've seen, the flawed tech makes the car worse than it should have been.

Not possible,a v10 like this with turbos would consume horrendous amount of fuel (3liter/10km or something)
The F10 does about 3,5 sec 0-100 already.

Comon guys, if you can say that you went from an M5 to an AMG, then you have a right to argue; BUT if you went from and E63 to an M5 like i have!, then you wouldnt be talking so much. yes torque on the 6.2 V8 is awesome, but overall car win goes to the M5. Dynamics, engine, suspension, and a simple x-pipe in the exhaust will sound incredibly amazing as well. Not the throaty V8, but a screaming V10!... AMG for the old timers. M cars for the enthusiasts.

If you owned an e34 and e39 you will surely notice a drop in quality - interior trim, and overall durability is way worse in e60
For me the worse of all is an SMG gearbox - it is fragile, prone to clutch breakdowns - classic hydro automatic in AMG seems to be better - its more reliable for sure (if you change ATF fluid) - i mean yea electronics can fail bout overall it's all way simpler than SMG.
Don't get me wrong, for me M5 is a legend, bout if I had to choose between E60 M5 and W211 AMG.... well its a tough one.

These are ALL used, they haven't been made since 2010.
I've got an e39 M5 as well as an e60 M5. They are both great cars, but very different. The e60 is closer to a 4-door Gallardo than the e39, which is more like a German muscle car. Both are loads of fun, just two different experiences.
yuriy dushchak I find it is just about personal preference and your personal needs. I ended up going c63 instead of e60 or the e90 but only becuase it fit my needs more than the others did. They are all great cars homestly if my wallet would take it I would have all of the above lol
