This is what I admire about the USA. I'm not American, but I've always felt that the US is like a library of the world. People from all over the world arrive and share their knowledge and skills with their new Homeland. It allows America to experience many pleasures and flavors from different parts of the world.
I am american, and I agree. Frankly, it's what I love most about this country. However, I'm fearful of our future here in the US with regards to new immigrants and what rights they'll have if they are even allowed in... Its a really disgusting period in our history right now. But every american should read what you wrote... we are special BECAUSE of our diversity and there is no need to wage war upon it. My love from the US, avienblue!
Getting into this country legally was never easy or simple. It took my family 2 years. It takes others even longer just to get a visa. Again, nothing new. Hopping the border doesn't make you an immigrant. It makes you a criminal. I guess it takes somebody who entered legally to really appreciate that.
That’s actually what sucks about being American- people lose touch with their roots in a melting pot society. Most of us have no clue about our family histories outside of DNA tests.
Damn she is making me cry because that's how my parents and grandparents raised me. Taught me to understand Cambodian history, food, culture and the genocide. I love this and I want to go to Nyum Bai & chat with Chef Nite. Thank you for sharing this.
Fellow Cambodian from San Diego CA, really good at representing Khmer culture. The tragedy with the genocide will not hold Cambodian people down. We as KHMER will prosper and on the way to getting the recognition we deserve. Thanks for the video. We need a Part 2.
Cambodian 'breakfast' soup is easily one of my top 2 noodle soups in the world. I traveled there for like a month and I wanted to have that soup 24/7. It's just perfection. My mouth waters just thinking about it!! Lovely country, delicious food and one of the most tragic periods in history, and yet one of the nicest, warmest people you'll ever meet. Very beautiful work this chef is doing and all the thought and soul she's putting into it!
I left Cambodia when I was 1 (as a refugee) and I only returned recently. Even though I didn't speak much khmer, they all treated me so warmly. I think all khmer people need to visit. It's very hard to put into words my experience while I was there, but I immediately felt like I was "home" when I arrived at my father's village.
I know so much about the cuisines of Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia but have almost zero knowledge of Cambodian food and popular dishes. This was a great episode. 👍👍
Thanks sis you did great to represent Cambodia and Cambodian's food to the world as people always knows Cambodia through the story about Genocide or Angkor Wat as you said, but our Cambodian food are amazing people should try. I'm happy to see you share all of these to the world 🙂 #khmerpride
*I live in Canada, and I think I've only ever seen like 3 Cambodian restaurants in my whole life!* There needs to be more, and Vietnamese people really need to experience their neighbours' cuisine!
I don’t think she ever wanted people to forget the negative events, rather, she wants to give people a comforting memory to start the conversation to heal the wounds from those negative times. In her case, she’d use food that her parents enjoyed in Cambodia to make them remember good times. Once they were reminiscing, they could then explore with a more open heart. I cannot imagine the horrors they witnessed and what they had to do to escape Cambodia and rebuild their lives, but it has to weigh heavily at times. It should never be forgotten, but you do have to move forward. She is using food as a way to heal.
Nyum Bai is great, creative, smart idea to come up with that name, most khmer restaurant is name Apsara,Bayon,Angkor Wat,so Nyum Bai is very unique name.I wish your restaurant become very successful.
I am interested in Canbodian people and culture. And I am a filipino. It was very enlightening that the Philippines had many cambodian refugees stay there during their transition to other countries.
2ndgeneration here. I was raised eating Cambodian food but unfortunately can’t speak it so I feel “less” Cambodian...so happy to see someone passionate about sharing the culture to everyone and showing us the food. So sad how people know lots about Vietnam orThailand and little did they know a gem is right in between them. But it goes the same for countries like Myanmar, Burma, Nepal etc.
So beautiful and talented Chef ! We’ll miss our Kmer authentic foods dishes your the deal sister so happy for you . You look humbly and real Cambodian woman 🥰💐💕🙏🏽
There’s this Cambodian mom and pop restaurant in SD that I’ve been going for like 10 years. It’s one of my favorite food. The owners work every day. They’re literally the hardest working people I know. I hope her kids learn the ways or I’ll be left without my Cambodian food because they’re getting old.
Welcome to America - the land of opportunity. This is what makes America unique. Irrespective of your background, if you work hard you will achieve your goal. Sure there will be some obstacles. But as long as you don’t give up, you will see the light. Great job little sis! I’m proud of you.

Hearing her describe using authentic food as a means of starting a conversation with another generation traumatized from war was legitimately powerful. Oh and the food looked delicious.
A lot of south eastern restaurants list as Thai/Vietnamese as that's more popular and will bring people in--even those that specialize in Cambodian food. Same with Laos restaurants. Ironically most owners of authentic Thai places are actually Laotian because they share so much in culture. You just gotta go in and check it out to see if it's authentic or not.

The Cambodian rice noodle soup is very popular in Southeastern Vietnam(mien tay nam bo). We call it Huu Tieu Nam Vang. This soup requires more ingredients than pho (chicken or beef.)
It’s crazy because im Cambodian too but i was born and raised on the east coast and have never been to Oakland but the way she explains her childhood growing up and the food she eats, is so similar to the way me and my cousins grew up in Rhode Island/mass
The Phnom Penh noodles are somewhat widely available in Southern Vietnam by the name "Hủ Tiếu Nam Vang". Usually there they add also pork liver and heart with a quail egg. Good stuff.
Southern Vietnam used to be Souther Cambodia. Maybe the French can explain about the politic side of the story on how it happened. The Cambodian noodle soup Vietnamese people also eat. There is a dry version with broth on the side as well. In San Jose there are several restaurant's that specialize in that dish.
