Thank you. Finally I found someone on TH-cam that makes sense about trazodone. I was prescribed it as a sleep aid by my doctor. I had no idea it was actually an anti-depressant. I have to get up multiple times at night to urinate. After taking trazodone for about a month I had two instances of getting up in the middle of the night and feeling like I was going to pass out. I thought I was going to have to call 911. I believe it was because my blood pressure was dropping. I also had bad reaction to gabapentin. I’m not fond of either one after my experiences.

Trazodone really helped me fall asleep on nights where my mind would not settle down. I have bipolar type 1, and insomnia used to be an off and on issue for me...during both manic and depressive phases. However, trazodone provoked constant episodes of sleep paralysis, and I am already prone to this parasomnia condition in general. In short, I had to stop taking it. I now take hydroxyzine for sleep. Like trazodone, it's also a piperazine derivative, and seems to work great. It's relatively safe compared to sedative hypnotics and benzos, and unlike diphenhydramine, it doesn't have the same heavy anti-cholinergic effect that causes that whole "sleepy mind...active body" nuisance. Great stuff!
Bottom line. Ambien is EASY to become addicted to. Getting off Ambien was a personal hell for me. Trazadone is NOT addictive. In the U. S., I went on Trazadone after my Ambien misadventures for 6 years. It quieted my tinnitus, which was a huge factor in how my insomnia played out as well, as well as no ill effects when I moved to Morocco, where Trazadone is unavailable. Now I go to Spain to get my Trazadone. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work quite so well as Trazadone in the U.S. Nonetheless, I am hoping to return to the U.S. next year and begin, again, to get full nights of sleep.
Trazodonr is good for sleep disorder as a ad i dont know. In comparrison to any benzo its not that effective but its far less dangerous. With benzo u are addicted after some weeks and this damgeges your whole system u forgot how to relax your self getting clean from benzos is a very difficult and often painful issue.
Thank you for finally making me feel sane… I have severe adhd and as a teenager I had trouble sleeping so my dr prescribed me trazodone but after slowly increasing the dose over 12 years now it takes me an hour just to get out of bed because im so tired in the morning. Recently ive tried to stop and have massive withdrawels but both my Dr and pharmacist just keeps telling me its in my head
I start taking trazodone 100mg for insomia and I feel words, I am dizzy all the time I forget things a fall one time and I my body hurts my legs are like wiakness. I don’t feel good. I’m going to stop using it.
Google side effects. I did and have every one of them. Could figure it out and apparently my docs never had a clue. I was taking for about 9 years. And men have to be aware it can work like Viagra with bad out comes.
Been taking 150mg for over 5 years. Huge mistake. It was good when I first started and needed it, wouldn’t recommend long term. Fainting, upper body weak, and the worst was realizing one day I forgot my dogs name for that one moment, started realizing my short term memory is shot. I stopped taking it. It is habit forming don’t let them fool you. I just hope and pray my body, and mind recovers.
I feel you. I took it for a year or so and worked well for my sleep, but after awhile I started having hallucinations at night both hearing a visual. I was also taking sertraline at the time, and started feeling dizzy and faint all the time, shaky, and weak. I began having memory loss and not being able to focus at all at work or remember basic tasks. Everything had to be written down for me. I forced myself to queen off of it myself since I felt like my doctor wouldn’t listen to me, had some mental breakdowns due to withdrawing too fast, and got in a car accident that weekend. Admitted to a mental hospital, had manic episodes and seizures from the drug withdrawal. Was prescribed Depakote for the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder. Works well for me and doesn’t give me any hallucinations or anything like trazedone did, but it does cause weight gain and hair loss. Mainly weight gain, which is really annoying. I want to get off medication overall, I just am scared of the withdrawal side effects
I was prescribed this for sleep. I didn’t really understand why. I’ve taken Ambien in the past short durations, and has worked great. I almost feel like the big Pharma companies don’t want us to take medication that actually work, but that kind of work so that we have to take something else.
Well, I was on trazodone for a few years. If I forgot to take it I would toss and turn and by 4 am I realized I hadn't taken my med. It took me months to taper off. I went on a vacation and forgot to bring my medication. I didnt sleep for 4 days and flew home early. That is when I knew I had to stop it. I loved the boner it gave me. Years later I started taking Ambien....Well, I would sleep-drive at night maybe wake up in the front yard. Or cook a 6 course dinner ....I'm not on any medication now 15 years or more.
Ambien is horrible. Did things I did not remember and would not have known about it if I were not told. Trazadone 150 mg works wonders with no side effects. I wonder about this guy speaking on this video. Relatively none of this applies to me
Michael, how did you manage to get off of meds totally? I am also on trazodone and so far I can't sleep without it... It's been two months of treatment.
I just started tapering myself off Trazadone a week ago after somehow being dumb enough to be on it for 2 1/2 years without knowing it was an antidepressant. I loved how I got sleep on it, but after gaining 30 lbs and nothing I did changing it (I’ve always had a fast metabolism and have been active my whole life) when I looked up Trazadone after my doctor telling me it’s just for sleep, I realized how many side effects I had been having. A good nights sleep is not worth all of the side effects including serotonin syndrome. Can’t believe I trusted a doctor for that long without looking it up for myself. I sure hope it doesn’t take 4 months to get off it though 😩
My dr gave this to me yesterday for insomnia,, I have trouble falling asleep. She told me it might take a few weeks to start working,m which made zero sense to me since I'm having a sleeping problem right now, why would I take something that takes weeks to work??? I'm not depressed, I don't have depression, I have a problem falling asleep. I thought she would give me some kind of sedative, something that works a hour after taking it, not something that takes weeks to work. I was told to take half the pill the first week at bedtime (25mg, which seems very low to me) then the next week the whole pill at bedtime. Why are they pushing these anti depressants so much?? why are they so afraid of old fashioned sedatives? this was a dr standing in for my reg dr. I already get palpitations from anxiety, why can't they just give me a damn sedative.
I take Adderall and Trazodone. Trazodone functions as an antidepressant but a side effect is drowsiness unlike any other consumable I've ever had. It's great for insomnia and to just sedate you. If you take it then around 30 minutes you'll be succumbed to the depths of Trazodone. However, it takes about 2 weeks for the antidepressant property to take affect.
I’ve been taking ambien for over 7 years to fall asleep …my doc cut me off and made me take Traz… to night is my first night …I don’t think it’s going to work …not even 100mg …I’ll be up for days now thanks doc ! . I’ll come back and report in another week if so lol.
It's true what he says. I took trazodone for 20 years. I developed arrhythmia, orthostatic intolerance and breathing problems. It also gave me chronic fatigue syndrome, it severely impairs memory, decreases blood flow to the brain, reduces oxygen uptake, destroyed my vision and worstens anxiety, causes alcohol cravings and OCD. My dad had a heart attack and my mom a seizure while taking this drug. It metabolizes into mCPP which is used to induce panic attacks, hostility and feelings of suffocation in animal and human experiments.
This really blows my mind I went to my dr extremely dehydrated extremely Exhausted and irritable and anxiety with feelings in my chest like I’ve never had before (lots of heart issues in the family) ekg was done and blood work when I left I was Prescribed trazodone 50mg a night and blood work only showed b12 low and I need otc b12 : the dizzy effects with taking this is definitely scary for late night bathroom trips: and definitely scary when I have a normal low blood pressure most the time
Iam using trazadone to treat depression and insomnia the first two days I took it when I woke up my head was hurting but it also helps me sleep since I was getting only 2-3 hrs of sleep a day now I’m getting atleast 6 hrs😏
@@stellabrown909 This man lays out information in a no-nonsense way for viewers to make educated decisions on their health. YOU are the one sounding confused as hell. You sound like a keyboard critic/coward.
I think your presentations are marvelous. However, you need to rethink your ideas regarding trazodone. This med is much preferred to benzodiazepines for the elderly. This is particularly true for those with early dementia. I have 30 years of experience with trazodone.
I was prescribed an anti-depressant in the Spring of 1980. I have no idea what it was. It was shaped like an M and M candy. It gave me the best feeling of well being I've had on a medication. I would be grateful if you could go over what it might have been.
Will I am reading now as my doctor put me on it for anxiety in depression as my partner died last June he woke up next to me dead and I have been really down and really isolate myself and I feel like I can't go out because people talk to me and stuff like that I mean this has been going on for a few years
I prefer trazadone over benzodiazepines because benzodiazepines caused short term memory loss over time. Namely lorazepam. It seemed almost nothing this guy says apples to me. I’ve tried a lot of it
Been taking this for few months. Helps a lot with sleeping. BUT, I’ve been experiencing near fainting/ blackouts, severe nausea, rapid heart beat. It’s a horrible feeling and lasts all day. Going to start weaning off today.
Trazodone has been helping my insomnia from detoxing up Suboxone for the last 3 months straight, it's an amazing sleep aid that I'm using for this detox. I like it better than Seroquel makes me feel less drowsy.
@@lucasantoszyk1135 I would say vitamin c but that is a vitamin. also Seroquel is equally as good for sleep except that makes me feel a tad drowsy after I take it and in the morning, trazodone never makes me drowsy before or after.
It was awesome to me too until I read about priapism...Basically it can cause priapism in man that will make you have erection non-stop for hours and you should go to ER ASAP. If not treated properly you will say good bye to your willy
I prefer trazadone over Ambien because when I take ambien I do things that I don’t remember doing. I prefer trazadone Over lunista because lunista is not very effective to help sleep for me. I find 150 milligrams of trazadone is most effective with no noticeable side effects. By the way I suffered from NO depression. Also I did take Benadryl before I tried and of the others. Initially it worked well. After about 1 year. On the label it made me unable to stay still while in bed. On the label Benadryl says may cause excitability in children. That’s what it didhowever I was in my 30’s.
I have side effects that is dry mouth. The nurse practitioner that prescribed me trazodone told me to take melatonin only and if it doesn’t work take half of trazodone and I am up still. I need to know how to taper off without withdrawal symptoms
Great Information. I read many comments. But why do people have to take meds due to behavior health? My dum excuses are having a rough childhood, growing up unsupervised, continuing a rough life while a USA Marine, loosing job after job, ... Etc. Can all say why you all take such meds?
I don't have insomnia, I just don't have a circadian rhythm and melatonin doesn't affect me so this is my drug of choice. I like the sleep I get, but it is extremely addictive and I have to take it every single night
This drug is giving me mixed results. I still have sleepless nights after taking 100mg. Last night, I took a 100mg dose and was wide awake all night. I'm sick of it and will be tapering off even if I get shitty sleep. It's obviously not helping me.
Hey! Why y'all saying he's wrong???? How do you know??? Are you a scientist or a Dr?? Just because you had a good/bad experience with it, doesn't mean he's wrong!!!!
That is so strange because I tried melatonin, diphenhydramine, and hydroxyzine and all of those gave me the most disturbing nightmares. I started with 50 mg Trazodone almost 3 years ago and gradually increased to 150 and it has worked better than anything with very few instances of nightmares. A year ago they took me off it and tried Sonata as needed but it did nothing.
I realize these comments are old but does anybody ever get nightmares from this drug I started taking this drug because when I wanted to fall asleep I would choke and the ER doctor gave it to me and I know I never choked when I was given this drug I was always tired enough to go to sleep but I would choke so they gave me Trazodone and then I would fall asleep it is very weird I never have a good dream every night it is some kind of nightmare
I had a really disturbing and detailed nightmare the first and second night I took this… I had a dream I was choking someone and I killed them? And then another that was even worse but then they suddenly stopped and I’m still taking ot
I don't doubt that he has some point about risks and side effects, but to be so menacing about the side effects of lower doses of this drug while acting like benadryl is super safe and has minimal side effects gives the impression of bias. Benadryl isn't that friendly. Many of the risks he listed were negative interactions with other drugs -- lots of drugs aren't good in combination with other drugs, that's why our doctors and pharmacist are supposed to look at interactions! I appreciated the information, particularly about mechanism of action and half life and that. But as I said this presentation gives the impression of bias.
Yeah he was being kinda a jerk and bad energy. Saying “why don’t you just take an FDA approved sleep medicine?” Lol because the FDA doesn’t give a s*** what they approve duhhhh 🤣
Trazadone was given for me for sleep 50mg and it makes me have seizures which I have epilepsy I told my doctor and he still insists in me Taking it I no longer take it at all please don’t take it u will pass out please don’t take it
Men be careful taking this. It can and has caused dangerous erections 8 to 10 hours. I stopped after taking almost 9 years. Figured out looking into side effects. I have every single one.
All I know is, I sleep when taking it and don't sleep if I stop taking it. I've had insomnia for years and took Ambien for approximately 3 years. Then I apparently built up an immunity to it, I stopped and tried something else. That something else was Trazadone. I had been prescribed that medication several years earlier, for depression, but found that it made me "zombie-like", so my Doctor discontinued it in favor of Venlafaxine and Bupropion. After the Ambien stopped working for me I asked my Doctor about Trazadone as a sleep aide substitute. He agreed to let me try it. I take 200 mg each night (after building up to that dosage). Within an hour I fall asleep easily, sleep the night through, and wake up feeling pretty good after 9-12 hours sleep. Before I found the Trazadone, the reverse was a nightly experience: great difficulty falling asleep, waking constantly during the night, and if I did manage to fall asleep for any period of time during the night, I awoke feeling completely exhausted and fuzzy-brained. I will continue to take it until a reason for me to not take it is found. Trazadone gives me a quality of life I don't have, without it.
Will trazadone help me get off of the 15 mg of mirtazapene which i cannot get off of. Ive tried. 25 years ive been taking 25 mg trazadone with 15 mg mirtazapene for anxiety and depression i had . Ilive a great life on these. The trazadone was given with the mirtazapene due to restless leg that was a side effect of mirtazapene. For the last 6 months ive been cutting the 25 mg every night till im now down to barely a nibble. Finally 4 days of no trazadone but beginning to feel depression a bit and anxiety. Yuk..my hoal is to get off all medication but i think the mirtazapene is going to be AWFUL. My doctor suggested 10 percent off a month.
When do you take it? At night or during the day? I have daytime anxiety depression and insomnia. Currently on 15mg mirtazipine at night for sleep and during the day I’ll take half 15 mg tablet twice a day as needed for daytime anxiety - been a week on that but I’m worried about weight gain so want to try trazadone. Any weight gain?
I don't understand I was told this was for anti psycotic but commonly used as a sleep pill when I already take Amitriptaline . I have fits ,hemiplegic migraine dry mouth already.
Sorry but just because he's a doctor doesn't mean I need to agree.... Trazodone has done amazing things for me and allows me to sleep like a baby on a 25 mg dose....NOTHING else has worked......And regarding side effects, guess what? Sleep Deprivation also has horrible sided effects, and to recommend Benadryl of all things made this doctor lose all credibility.
@Angela Luis I actually only take it during the weekends now since I need to be alert during the week and as you know sometimes it makes you feel groggy for a few hours after you wake up...but I have been taking it for a few months is all
Long QT side effect. Provider refused to listen to my increasing dosage symptoms. Permanent damage. Caused by pracitioner refusal to take my increasing side effects until I had severe heart reaction. I love my trazadone. 200 mg a night
Last night was my last night I’ve gained weight shocking feeling in legs dry mouth headaches and body aches I’m done I cried listening to him
it's the only thing that helps me sleep for the past 20 years.
Pro-tip for psychonauts: Trazodone kills a psychedelic trip (LSD, shrooms, etc.) within an hour of taking.
Wait whaaaaaaaa-
Thank-you so much
My go to guy when it comes to learning about meds. The gold standard.
Very educational and straightforward information. Thank you soooo much!
Its worked as a sleep aid for me for 15 years with no side effects. Ill stay on it. Oh yeah @ 50 mgs.
Now you learned something 😁
Anytime you decrease a dose there's side effects
Thank you for the insight and hope you are stil allive. Any antidepressant drug that doesn't make you go into hypotension?
So after watching a couple of videos from this gentleman, my one question is: is there medication that this doctor WOULD recommend? 😂
He's okay with zolpidem.
Thank you for this video. It is very informative.

I start taking trazodone 100mg for insomia and I feel words, I am dizzy all the time I forget things a fall one time and I my body hurts my legs are like wiakness. I don’t feel good. I’m going to stop using it.
That is why I stoped it. It helped stop the crying But the sidefect suck
I have been on Trazodone for years and I’m on 100 mg it’s the best thing I’ve ever come across ..I swear.
What did you use it for? I have Social anxiety and Depression,, all SSRI i tried didnt do much.. and thinking to ask my doc to add this drug.
What about your appetite? Are you craving carbs and are you hungry more than before?
Thank you.
Google side effects. I did and have every one of them. Could figure it out and apparently my docs never had a clue. I was taking for about 9 years. And men have to be aware it can work like Viagra with bad out comes.

The withdrawal symptoms sound exactly the same as Effexor.
TheEmpowered787 no longer pigging out on Trazodone that’s for sure!!!
how are you now?
@@thechelseachannel794 Depakote probably would be advantageous to get off of. That s* aint right. Say no to lithium too.
You are 100% correct, it's a disaster drug
Dont listen to this clip if your gonna take this for anxiety.
I was prescribed this for sleep. I didn’t really understand why. I’ve taken Ambien in the past short durations, and has worked great. I almost feel like the big Pharma companies don’t want us to take medication that actually work, but that kind of work so that we have to take something else.
So how was trazadone? I’m getting some from doc today
You do know that big pharma produces Ambien yes? And it's really addicting when used long term? Careful with that stuff!!
Because it's ambien lmao. Ambien is addictive
@@Lawbase dont go on twitter after taking ambien

That’s good
I have been taking a low dose of it for sleep for a long time and my boners are always amazing! How do I say thank-you for the boners?
I already get palpitations from anxiety, why can't they just give me a damn sedative.
lol' few weeks to (kick) in...that's psyc ward DR.talk.
The sedation side effect should happen right away. The anti-depressive effects can take a few weeks though, yah.
It didn't work! For insomnia., just got something over the counter instead. It makes you feel like a zombie. I don't like that crap.
Agreed. It’s an uncomfortable feeling and I hate it too.
I’ve been taking ambien for over 7 years to fall asleep …my doc cut me off and made me take Traz… to night is my first night …I don’t think it’s going to work …not even 100mg …I’ll be up for days now thanks doc ! .
I’ll come back and report in another week if so lol.
How did it work? I take klonopin and mirtazapine.
Same here. It literally dries you out. My eye still hurts. Dont forget the erections constantly.
@@frankwhite7109 hey bro did you face blurry vision due to this medicine??

I feel like I can barely breathe in the morning when I wake up plus dizzy
Iam using trazadone to treat depression and insomnia the first two days I took it when I woke up my head was hurting but it also helps me sleep since I was getting only 2-3 hrs of sleep a day now I’m getting atleast 6 hrs😏
Yep Trazadone is amazing! I love it..........

I think your presentations are marvelous. However, you need to rethink your ideas regarding trazodone. This med is much preferred to benzodiazepines for the elderly. This is particularly true for those with early dementia.
I have 30 years of experience with trazodone.
Any weight gain, constipation? Changes in lipid profile etc?
Very helpful! Thank you!
I was prescribed an anti-depressant in the Spring of 1980. I have no idea what it was. It was shaped like an M and M candy. It gave me the best feeling of well being I've had on a medication. I would be grateful if you could go over what it might have been.

Do you ever get episodes where ur awake but u feel almost unconscious?
This guy is amazing I love him like my own family
You're wrong I actually it antagonize is Alpha adrenergic receptors, which causes sedation and the blood pressure drop, as well as 5htp antagonism.
Trazodone has been helping my insomnia from detoxing up Suboxone for the last 3 months straight, it's an amazing sleep aid that I'm using for this detox. I like it better than Seroquel makes me feel less drowsy.
That's awesome bro what other meds or supplements have helped u detox from suboxone?
Took 450mg at night with seraquel 25mg and Ativan 1 mg. Started weaning off a year ago.
@Janel Bucsko how are you doing? what size dose of each med are you down to? thanks!
I have side effects that is dry mouth. The nurse practitioner that prescribed me trazodone told me to take melatonin only and if it doesn’t work take half of trazodone and I am up still. I need to know how to taper off without withdrawal symptoms
Dr Ken is well versed in medication and it’s effects and side effects!
I like the sleep I get, but it is extremely addictive and I have to take it every single night
do u have any side effect?
This drug is giving me mixed results. I still have sleepless nights after taking 100mg. Last night, I took a 100mg dose and was wide awake all night. I'm sick of it and will be tapering off even if I get shitty sleep. It's obviously not helping me.
I was prescribed this with my Lexapro
Hey! Why y'all saying he's wrong???? How do you know??? Are you a scientist or a Dr?? Just because you had a good/bad experience with it, doesn't mean he's wrong!!!!
Notice he never gives his name
I take 150 mg Trazodone ever night its not good the nightmares from this drug
That is so strange because I tried melatonin, diphenhydramine, and hydroxyzine and all of those gave me the most disturbing nightmares. I started with 50 mg Trazodone almost 3 years ago and gradually increased to 150 and it has worked better than anything with very few instances of nightmares. A year ago they took me off it and tried Sonata as needed but it did nothing.
I have been using 100mg trazedone. I take it 2 hours before bed
your going to gain weight from getting the munchies
"often within the first month, and at relatively low doses" So would lower dosages like 25-50mg give more chance of happening compared to 100mg?
Ambien worked better for me than trazadone.
Ambien is safe if you take it while in bed and do NOT get up after taking it.
Trazadone gives me a hangover. I can't sleep without it. I am going to wean myself off it. I am so fatigued most of the morning.
Same...the awful hangover is no good.
That side effect is extremely extremely rare!!!! If you got it, then are one of the extremely rare cases...........
What are the contraindications for mania or hypomania?
Such useful information. Thank you Doctor!
100mg before bed kicked the living shit outta me. BAD DREAMS! The worst dreams that went on for a lifetime!!!
@Angela Luis I actually only take it during the weekends now since I need to be alert during the week and as you know sometimes it makes you feel groggy for a few hours after you wake up...but I have been taking it for a few months is all
@Angela Luis I've been taking 100 mgs a night for 22+ years, never had any side effects and it still works well for me.
