I've been on Trazodone for 7 years now and wish I had been prescribed it earlier. I had such bad insomnia and anxiety before, I had trouble keeping a job and relationships. Now I have a good career and I am so content with my life. I hate the ridicule I receive from people though, when I tell them I take a prescription drug for anxiety. Too many people don't realize that some people need medications, they think doctors push these drugs on us but that is not the case at all.

@@teresahoang6593 I believe they have to be looking for certain drugs to find them in your sample so I doubt they would look for Trazodone. It is also a prescription drug so I don’t see why they wouldn’t hire or would fire you even if they knew you were on it. I’m not well informed on the issue though so I can’t say for sure. A doctor or your employer would be best to ask :)

@@wereallnegan I haven’t tried because the contrast between how happy I am now and my life before is so great I’m honestly a little scared to try and there are no side effects that I have noticed so I don’t know if there would be a point. I do have some anxiety still especially in social situations/out in public so I don’t think it would be good to try at this point. I should probably see a therapist tbh but the idea gives me anxiety as well lol 😬

@@BonnieHaynes-gg4nk It’s hard to know with whom it’s safe to share medical information. May I suggest that you don’t. Unless they know all of your entire medical history, you will get tons of useless, unwanted information from well meaning people.
I found the hardest part of having a disability was learning to trust myself, and stop listening to the abundant advice of others. Sharing details with others is rarely necessary, and seldom helps. I stick with expressing my boundaries, and even then, I keep it to a bare minimum.
Only recently have I figured out how to deflect all the well meaning advice, with phrases like, “hey that’s interesting,” or “thanks I’ll try to look into that,” before quickly changing the subject. It’s hardest when I’m feeling vulnerable and really want a chance to explain myself, or just want a chance to download my feelings. But that stuff is for therapy or journaling. Especially when I feel my problems or feelings are being dismissed or misrepresented or that I’m being judged harshly. It’s hard not getting sucked in.
I am lucky enuf to be married to a doctor, and I can share a lot with her. But a decade ago she also talked me into having a surgery, that ended up quite badly. Since then I’ve learned I can trust her to listen to my feelings, but not accept advice. I found a great therapist who specialized in disabilities, who was willing to just listen and not judge, and that made all the difference for me.
So there is my unsolicited advice. You might want to ignore mine too!

I’ve been on trazodone for about that long myself. I often try not to take it every night, out of stubbornness I guess, but I’m so much better off when I do take it regularly! It doesn’t help me fall asleep, but it does keep me asleep for 7-9 hours, which is a great relief for an insomniac. I take 50-100mg once I’m in bad and sleepy. I was severely congested every night for 3 - 4 hours. It took me a couple of months to figure out which of my meds was the culprit. I had to abruptly stop taking it. Now I am so extremely sleep-deprived. My doctor had no suggestions so I switched to a new doctor and she only said I need to deal with my stress. Thanks for adding to my stress, doc! After 17 years of trying different medications for depression and some PTSD issues, nothing worked. My doctor gave me this for insomnia and after taking it, I noticed a difference almost right away. Imagine my surprise that it wound up helping me a lot. I had no idea it was for depression too when I started taking it. The racing thoughts at bedtime stopped, I sleep better, and I have more motivation and energy. Trazodone finally gave me some hope, since I'd really thought nothing was ever going to help me. There are a few side effects, like dry mouth at first, some unintentional weight loss, and sometimes morning grogginess/oversleeping. All these are very mild and not a problem, esp when compared to how I was before. I'm glad doctors still prescribe it and I hope more consider it for issues that don't respond to SSRIs or more 'typical' anti-depressants.

Bro its so annoying you read 10 positive comment about anxiety etc and then one guy "it made everything worse". IF IT MADE EVERYTHING WORSE WHY DID YOU TAKE IT FOR 20 YEARS? Excuse me but clearly something is unreflective of the medication in this comment. Did you develop these problems after 1, 5, 10, 20 years? What is your general health like? How can you know that this medication caused these effects over a timespan of 20 years. Literally anything else including aging itself could cause these effects. For all i know you could be a fat alcoholic. You don't start taking these kind of pills at age 10 and you mostly didn't took them until age 20-30 so of course you get worse memory if you are like 50.. and even if you make it seem like its a nightmare medication. Fatigue syndrome.. ruins your memory.. in what sense? You can't remember what you ate for breakfast 2 weeks ago? Worsens your anxiety, how? If you gonna write a review then please be specific and not just write useless information that prevents other people from taking it. I honestly doubt you got any of these symptoms from this stuff, its literally ALL age related illnesses or simply caused by bad/lazy life choices. If you continued taking it for 20 years nonetheless then you are just dumb.

I've been taking Trazodone for 30 years; 300 mg. No complaints as a sleep aid. For me, if I have a snack first and then take it. It's way more effective. Also with me, the effectiveness lasts exactly 4 hours.
But now I am in the process of weaning myself off of it. One side effect that Trazodone has is the heart arrhythmia the Doc spoke of-- "Prolonged QT " I am also on Methadone, have been for 7 years now. First started on it to help me with opiate addiction. I have a very bad spine now, doctors can't operate and none of their pain relieving processes like SCS and pain pump. So for now, I can get some pain relief from the Methadone. If I went to a higher dose of methadone, I got that Prolonged Qt thing. So all in all, that's why I am quitting Trazodone. Hopefully, I will be able to increase the methadone. I will get EKG's to make sure.

First let it be stated that I am neurodivergent. I have PTSD, ADHD, and am autistic. I say this because having a differing neurological landscape, I believe, matters a lot in terms of my personal experience. I was prescribed trazodone for sleep and took it only once. I felt as if sleepiness were a sort of helmet. But there was within my mind a sense of nervousness, fear, and anxiety accompanying the sleepiness. This seems counter intuitive, but it was my experience. I was informed of this before I took it, so being aware that I could feel that way as a side effect helped me find a solution. I paired it with 1 mg of Xanax and it did the trick. But I won't be taking trazodone again.

If you are in your 40s, talk to your Pharmacist to get a list of the specific medications it interacts with.
Now, you maybe thinking that , I am not on any medications. True, but if you develop high blood pressure or simple aging issues, Trazodone will greatly reduce which medications are available to you. It also reacts to many over the counter medications like benadryl.
The second thing is that because it is technically an antidepressants it can build up in your system and cause serotonin syndrome or slowly start interfering with your mental health. It creeps up slowly, and usually you don't realize it until it has exasperated your mental health symptoms.
    Note:
This can also be the case for individuals who weren't previously had mental health issues.
The other thing is it can increase anxiety or feeling tense or on edge.
This one is tricky to spot because initial you will feel like your more awake because you are sleeping better. You start to attribute your increasing alertness with the fact that you have been sleeping better than you have for years.
You increase your activity load and productivity because you have more energy.
Then you start feeling more restless or on edge or worse you start having panic attacks.
If you start experiencing anything like I described, talk to your doctor before adding or increasing medications for anxiety or panic attacks. It maybe the Trazodone.
I want to be clear about this particular item: you can be on Trazodone for years and then out of nowhere, you start developing these issues. Again antidepressants can work well for years, decades even, and then start causing side effects you did experience prior. This is true with Trazodone.
Lastly, withdraw from Trazodone is very real.
I was told by my GP and psychiatrist that Trazodone was 100% safe to take long-term and doesn't cause withdraw.
No it most certainly isn't 100% safe and you definitely will go through withdraw even if you taper off.
The withdraw contines past the point of being no longer on the medication. Withdraw like substance misuse, the withdraw contnues after you have stopped using.
Also talk to your doctor and Pharmacist about how to taper of Trazodone.
Sudden stopping Trazodone can cause seizures, heart arrhythmia or afib, Increase of anxiety, suicidal thoughts, depression, and the worst being that you're insomnia comes back worse than it was before.
I tapered off Trazodone and literally went 9 months unable to sleep whatsoever. I am talking zero sleep.
FYI this is also the case for Seroquel withdraw , the absolute inability to be able to sleep for 9 months to a year.
Please before taking this medication really wieght in the potential long-term repercussions and consequences.
At the very least watch the video on Trazodone by TheLevelHeaded Mind
    Take care

I was prescribed this for anxiety/ insomnia, in 2000. I took ONE tablet ( 100 mg). I was exhausted but terrified. I felt like I was losing my mind. I felt as though Iwas standing next to myself- it was utterly horrifying. I made my husband PROMISE to remind me of how awful my experience was, just in case I agreed to try it again, EVER😊

my issue isn't falling asleep, it' staying asleep. I constantly wake up in the middle of the night or early in the morning and simply struggle to pass back out. I don't eat added sugar and I almost never eat processed food of any kind.
I've been trying to take a natural route for the last 2 years and finally am trying trazodone. 2 days in and I haven't really noticed much of a positive effect but I've been told to give it a week or so to adjust.

Apparently sleep aids don’t work very well on me. I’m on Mirtazapine, which usually makes people pass out but it only helps me sleep fairly well. I took Trazadone a few times, I remember the doctor giving me all kinds of warnings about it, like wait a while before you try to get out of bed, make sure you don’t fall down the stairs, because you can be super groggy when you wake up. None of that happened to me, it didn’t even help me sleep much.

I was prescribed Trazadone after a sleep study where I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I was told that my symptoms weren't severe enough to warrant treatment, but my Dr prescribed trazadone for sleep. It didn't do me a lot of good. (I don't remember the dosage, as it was 15 yrs ago). I did have brain fog, though, and that is why I stopped using it. I'd sit at my desk at work and couldn't remember what to do. I looked up the side effects, and that was one. I now take Costco's version of Unisom, and it works 95% of the time. I still never sleep straight through the night and never wake up feeling refreshed. I still have moderate sleep apnea. I snore the Hub out of bed about 2 nights a week. I need another sleep study, but don't relish sleeping (or not) in the hospital.

I’m usually very tolerant of medications, but trazadone…prescribed as a possible solution for my insomnia, was a problem. And the “problem” has happened ever time I’m inclined to take too big a dose. 150mg seems to help somewhat for sleep, but if I need to get up and pee (as I do frequently) I have literally caught myself passing out and being completely disoriented. It may very well help, but I think you have to find a balance between efficacy and crossing the line and going overboard. Taken in too big a dose, it is a very powerful med. it’s tempting to take too big a dose when you’re so completely desperate to try and sleep, but…and maybe it’s just me…we’re all different…be VERY careful getting up at night.

      @djgustavvo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

How long did you take to discontinue? Were you reducing dosage?
I once took trazodone associated with an ISRS, but the dosage was too high for me (50mg), and I started having the unwished erections. I stopped the medication "cold turkey", but I still got those weird erections.
I'm afraid they will never stop happening, so I think of reinstating and quiting slowly.
