Apparently Doctor Strange has the strongest mental fortitude of all the avengers. He spent around 100 years in a time loop with dormamu in that scene dying over and over again. In the comics it was 10,000 years or something like that. Pretty insane

And there have been movies and TV shows of Marvel characters outside the MCU: The X-Men (including Wolverine), the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Ghost Rider, the Punisher, Blade, the Inhumans, Venom, Powerman and Iron Fist. There might be others I've forgotten. But there's still more than that! A few others have been announced that will be part of the MCU in Phase 4. And still there are more! I'm trying to think of a few more worthy of mention:
The Sub-Mariner - a bit like DC's Aquaman, sometimes a hero, and sometimes a villain.
Alpha Flight - basically the Canadian version of the Avengers.
A number of other superheroes from various other countries, like Captain Britain, Sabra, etc.
Many of the superheroes we've seen in the MCU have "related" characters, like Spiderwoman, She-Hulk, Doc Samson, Nomad, etc., just like how War Machine/Iron Patriot "spun off" from Iron Man, and the Wasp from Ant Man, and the various Asgardians are part of Thor's "extended family".

@@rovertgraphsten5503 Before they even get there I'd like to see the Masters of Evil...or their Ultimate universe counterparts, The Liberators. Maybe something like the Grand Theft America storyline. Oh and to Duaffy, there are like 5,000 characters in the marvel comics universe but the amount who could carry a TV show, movie or even movie series is less than a hundred I'd say. The rest are total supporting characters.

I the first time I saw this movie, I got what the Sorcerer Supreme was saying about surrendering to (magic's) currents. She is telling Stephen to basically body surf magic. When you body surf a wave you, knowingly and with intent, ride the current of the wave. It is the same principle. I also loved how she made the analogy of magic being the source code of the universe. The process of building a spell and writing a programing are very similar.

Mads Mikkelsen the Danish dude playing the villan. I use to see him all the time walkin Down the Streets in Denmark like a normal person without anyone followin him🤣 he is a good actor tho. A weird one in Danish movies but fun🤣

Fun Fact: While Strange is in the car he gets a request for a case that sounds like Rhodeys from Civil War. Oh and in Winter Soldier "Stephen Strange" gets mentioned by Sidwell when he explains which kind of people the algorithm chooses to kill.

Xmen is Marvel. That alone has a deeper pool of characters than we have seen so far in the MCU. Marvel has been around since 1961, and by other names since 1939. So many characters.

I remember reading Doctor Strange in comics as a kid in the 80s. I don't remember the stories or anything, just what he looked like. The movie got it pretty close.

Think of the amount of characters in the movies vs. the comics the way Klau described how much vibranium is in Wakanda: "You've seen a tiny PIECE of it! They have a MOUNTAIN of it, they've been mining it for thousands of years, and they've barely scratched the surface!"

    From a quick google search
Marvel Comics has a massive library of more than 7,000 characters-maybe more than 50,000 if you count one-off and ancillary superheroes, villains, and other mutants-and it seems keen to feature as many of them as possible on the big screen.

To put the amount of characters into a very SMALL example, the MCU’s version of Civil War had 6 heroes on each side. The comic’s version of Civil War was like 20+ on each side

To give an answer to your question at the start about the numbers of characters - the comics have thousands of characters that have been through the pages over the decades. The comics will introduce characters fairly frequently, some don't take off and vanish into the background, some stay around as background teammates, some while disappear for a while and pop up again in later titles. The MCU will dig up characters like that to fill in the stories they present, though if it's a character like Doctor Strange, well he's one of the mainstay characters who have gained an important position and while his titles can flag over time, he will remain the sort of Big Name Character who pops up here, there and everywhere when his shtick (magic and other dimensions) becomes important to a plot.

Hey, Blue Eyes... I love - LOVE! - when your fresh opinion makes me see something in a new way. Toward the end, when you talk about all of Dr. Strange's suffering in the Dark Dimension, I'd never viewed it as him "paying the bill!" But he did, didn't he?! He paid that one in advance. And the thing is that you occasionally make a self-deprecating joke about being a ditzy blonde, but you have so many wonderful insights!

Crazy thing is, when the MCU started, Marvel didn't have movie rights to a lot of their best characters like Spider-man, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. Now they do after Disney bought Fox and made a deal with Sony. So there is a lot I'm looking forward to in the MCU.

@Gary Webb That's sad. Haven't seen it yet and loved the first Wonder Woman, even thought it felt a bit like Captain America The First Avenger. Being just a woman and WWI instead of WWII and having Cap in it, but it was still a good flick.

When Strange is driving and the guy on the phone says "We got an airforce pilot with a back injury" he's talking about Rhodie who got shot out of the sky by vision in Civil War. Also Stephen Strange was one of the names mentioned in The Winter Soldier when the computer Nazi was talking about the algorithum to pick out who to murder with the gun-ships. Long before he became a sorcerer. The Nazi's knew he would be a superhero long before Strange became one, so in essence, cap saved Strange's life.

Marvel has hundreds of characters they could make movies around and thousands of secondary characters they could use in supporting roles. Just the Avengers itself has had hundreds of members in the comics. The MCU has only scratched the surface of what they could potentially use.
