It only seems that way on the surface, but when you dig deeper, you realize they have very constricted configurations. Want media keys? I hope you like just having a volume knob. Would it kill anybody to put the arrows and the numpad on the left for a more ergonomic typing and mousing experience? They exist, but are a) no longer available or b) fugly as hell.

@@TheDragonmasterk Keychron is good starting out if you're willing to put in some work with modding the keyboard, Glorious I pretty much avoid like the plague at this point because of how skeezy of a company they are, and the Glorious Pandas were only the start. If you want something better out of the box, Drop has the Zoo65, TheKeyCompany has the Monsgeek M1 (75% layout) and M2 (an 1800 layout), even the Akko Top75 and SPR67 are decent options, but finding those kind of middle-ground budget kits and even the higher end ones requires quite some research given how many vendors there are and how sparse news spreads. If you want pretty much the comprehensive list of keyboard vendors out there, Alexotos (a pretty beloved creator in the space) has a full list of vendors for all regions (you may have to do some country hopping to get what you want though) including some discount codes based on sponsorship and affiliation.

My other half bought me a Keychron Q6 a few weeks ago, and I love it.
With a CNC machined and anodised 6063 aluminium body, PBT keycaps, and screw-in key stabilisers, it screams quality. It's so solidly built that I no longer have a problem with my keyboard scooting about my desk with barely a touch.
The support for 5 pin switches keeps your options open, the South facing RGB means the switch body doesn't get in the way of the light, and QMK/VIA support, means it's highly configurable from a web browser without having to install proprietary software.
VIA comes with a built in key tester and all of your configuration, including macros and modes, are stored in the flash memory of the keyboard itself, so you take it all with you between computers. You can even repurpose the PC/Mac switch on the back as a working/gaming switch, or re-compile it's open source firmware for the ultimate in configurability.
Overall it's a huge upgrade over my old Logitech G810, and I'd highly recommend checking out the Q6 or other QMK/VIA based keyboards. (No affiliation, just a satisfied user)

Sometimes overtightening screws into stabs makes plastic warp. I had a case where loosening screw just a bit on both sides unstuck spacebar and it was smooth and responsive.

More Nick and keyboard videos dammit! I'm just digging into custom keyboards and the info he provided is helpful.

This was a great vid! One criticism - I would've loved to hear why you chose those switches. I'm just getting into this myself, I was using a logitech membrane keyboard, then "graduated" to a Razer Blackwidow, and now I'm using a Ducky 1-2. Love my Ducky more than I thought possible!

Would love to see some more keyboard stuff, particularly on the budget side since I don't have much of a budget for one, but really like the custom mechanical keyboards

Wow 1st time I've watched through a whole j2c video, not getting bored during the last 4 minutes and clicking away. Thanks for holding my attention ! 🙂

I could care less about keyboard videos, but I watched all of this anyway because I enjoyed the presentation. Well Done Nick!

I'm glad to learn about this. I would like to hear from everyone on how they clean their keyboards. If you could make a video on how you clean your keyboards it would be great

If I begin to see too much keyboard stuff by Nic I'm afraid I'll fall down a new rabbit hole... Really cool stuff.

I also have the GMMK pro with inky yellow linear switches that I lubed. I lubed and also replaced all the stabilizers. Modding and personalizing your keyboard can be a big jump into the rabbit hole.

I always looked at custom keyboards as another rabbit hole I wanted to steer clear from. But I’m glad I got a better understanding of what I may like if I did decide to take the leap
