    The thing about the C5, C5 z06, and C6, is that despite them being "old" and such, they'll slap the shit out of most cars today in both a straight line and in the turns.

    I bough an 01 convertible from my dad when he upgraded to a 2012 and I love it.
    With a few minor modifications, I'm pushing 400 hp and 400 lb/ft. It's faster than pretty much everything. Trust me, you learn to ignore the 90's tech interior the longer you drive it. Part of the joy is the simplicity.
    I'm a lawyer and a few weeks back, I pulled into a court parking garage. As I did, another lawyer got out of his jaguar and told me he wishes he had a Corvette.
    People love the way it looks and sounds and always ask me for rides. It's not refined, which is part of the charm- it's brutal, it's fast, it looks great, and for some reason, people think it's worth way more than I paid.

      hey i have a question to you because you own a c5. is the four speed auto a bad choice for the car . every deal ive found has the 4 speed over the six and i dont know if the four speed is a good gear ratio considering it like to race the car ? any responses could help , thanks !

    • @FejjNagaf
      @FejjNagaf 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      John May Mine has the 3.15 rear end, which certainly helps in terms of acceleration. Also, a mod done prior to purchase was to remove the shift shock damper, making the 1-2 shift lightening quick.
      I would have preferred the manual transmission (of course) for the control aspect, but can report that the auto is still seriously quick with the mods and equipment I have. I don't race my car, so I can't speak to that. Generally speaking, though, auto's aren't as good on the track. Moving the auto shifter through the gates isn't the easiest thing to do either.
      However, the car is pretty darned quick with the auto. Around town, it's probably quicker than the stick because you don't have to worry about the clutch and shifting on your own. My dad has a C6 with a manual and he thinks so too.
      I don't think the auto is a bad choice, but it depends on what you plan on doing with it. Around town, it's great. On the track, it's probably less than ideal.
      If I had the choice of a manual or auto for the same money and wanted to track the car, I'd opt for the stick. In my case, I couldn't pass up the deal I got for an automatic. People think it's worth way more than it actually is and nothing is funnier than when some guy in a hopped up whatever thinks he is as quick as I am.
      With very little investment, you can pick up big power. Mine was dyno tuned and has about as much power as the z06 from the same year, if not a bit more. Intake, exhaust, shift shock delete, headers and a dyno tune.
      It's an awesome car. The interior is pretty cheap feeling/looking, but people get over that, especially if I hit it while the top is down.
      Great value for lots of performance. If you can find a decent one with a stick, grab it if you plan on tracking it. If you don't plan on track racing, the auto is just fine.
      Now go hunt for the one you want! Ask for any records of service and test drive the car. It's not a bad idea to have it looked at by a decent mechanic before buying.
      Mine is hibernating through the winter, but I can't wait for spring.

    I owned a C5 convertible just like this one for 8 years and it was extremely reliable and yes you can hear everything while driving, the convertible is noisy. This car in 6th gear on the highway would do 30+ mpg all day long. It is a Chevy after all. Corvette are made for performance and affordability. This generation was very successful and very affordable today.

      Now most cars are such heavy pigs that car companies are forced to use extreme methods to meet the requirements. Making bodies out of aluminum, adding gear after gear to transmissions, making all manual cars have gears that are so short they're ridiculous(to force you to shift early so you get better mpg). Instead of keeping it simple like they did with the C5, lets add hundreds of pounds worth of technology bullshit and then destroy the car. Now a ton of cars have tiny 1 liter engines with turbos and it's fucking sickening.

    Interesting review. Just a note about the fuel mileage. You said that because it has a V8 that it would struggle to get good fuel mileage and would be at best 25 mpg. Actually, the great torque, low weight, low coefficient of drag and optimal 6th gear allow this car to easily get 30 mpg on the highway doing legal speeds. It's a phenomenally designed car.

    • @10072018
      @10072018 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the C5 Coupe/FRC have a COD of .29 (?). I know it is slightly more slippery than the C6. As for the C7/C8, I dont know that info. I believe on the dyno my C5 took 13hp to achieve 60mph....

    C5s are Soo under rated there a really cool super fun car for an amazing value it's still to this day one of the best handling cars out there I'm not to sure about the convertible but the coupe and hard top are near 50/50 weight distribution a few simple boltons and a tune really wake up the ls1 and for the coupe and frc the gas mileage they get upwards of 28mpg truly an awesome car for the money

    • @MrFrozenCanuck
      @MrFrozenCanuck 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They were designed as convertibles first, I believe, so there is not much sacrificed in the way of handling if you get one.

      Scott Babcock I really like my C5. It feels heavier than it is when your driving easy, but the harder you push it, the less you notice it. It's a very well balanced car. I read a lot of reviews on the C5 before I bought one,
      and most of them say that the interior is bad, therefore I had low expectations. I've been in a lot of 90's performance cars (rx7, miata, mustang, camaro/trans-am etc.) and compared to most of them - the interior is actually pretty good. I was impressed! The seats could use more support but they are very comfortable ( if you're not comfortable - start pushing buttons until you become comfortable ) Fuel economy is impressive to say the least, I get mid 20's running around on the back roads, having fun, going to work etc; Longer trips easily return over 30mpg. I love my manual.

      Justa318i 1000% agree even the top option legacy has the shittiest interior , everyone who reviews a corvette say they have the lowest quality interior , these cars are the best bang for your buck hands down and it's American so they need to nit pick every single thing on the car. Again I don't care if it's an Sti or a legacy 3.5R they all have shit interiors compared to the vette

    The small block Chevy may be" dated" as he states but it's hard to argue with its performance. I think it's more power full then anything even close to its physical size, it's rock solid dependable, parts are cheap and it will do much better then 25 mpg. Also there's a lot to be said for parts availability. If you happen to break down, even in the most remote small town, you can find parts.

      I drove a new 5.0 Mustang a few months ago and I just drove an LS1 C5. The C5 felt waaay faster when I did a few 3rd gear pulls. It may be 80hp less but I guess the weight difference makes up for it. I fell in love the moment I turned onto the street and started moving. I think it's one of the best looking cars ever made also. So simple, yet elegant and aerodynamic at the same time.

      preludeF20Bking Here are some comparable cars from the time, just off the top of my head:
      The Ferrari 360 was out about the same time as this car; it had a 3.6L flat-plane V-8 w/ 5 valves per cylinder (3 intake, 2 exhaust). Made just under 400 hp iirc, naturally aspirated. It was well over $100,000 though, making it 3x the cost of a C5 Z06 (which actually performed better!)
      Also there was the Porsche 911 Turbo (996); 3.6L TT w/ 415 horsepower. Boxer (flat) V-6.
      The Porsche 911 Carrera S also had a 3.6L, except in normally aspirated form it had 290-320 depending on year/spec
      BMW’s M5 and Z8 had the 5.0L V-8 w/ 400 horsepower. N/A
      The BMW M3 was considered a direct competitor to the standard C5. It had a 3.0L (or maybe a 3.2L?) straight-6, making 333 hp. N/A.
      350Z came out in 2003; had a 276 hp N/A V-6 w/ 287 ft/lb torque. Though slower and less powerful than the Vette, it was ~25% cheaper
      WRX STi had a 2.5L turbocharged flat-4 making 320 horsepower
      Mitsubishi Lancer Evo XIII had a 2.0L in-line 4 making ~300 hp
      Mazda RX-8 had a 1.3L N/A rotary (well technically rotary motors are measured differently; in the conventional sense it was more like 2.6L which is still impressive) making ~250 hp
      BMW’s X5 SUV (they called it SAV) and 540i sedan came with 4.4L V-8’s with 325 hp; there was a special variant of the X5 with a 4.6L V-8 that had more (I want to say 360 hp)
      Porsche Cayenne Turbo had a 4.8L turbocharged V-8 (iirc) making 500 hp. The Cayenne S N/A had 400 hp.
      I know there’s more, but those are the main ones.
      None of these had the performance AND value of the C5/Z06
      Edit: Forgot to add the C5 specs
      1997-2000: 345 hp, 350 lb/ft
      2001-2004: 350 hp, 375 lb/ft
      (6-speed manual only; auto was limited)
      Z06 (2001): 385/385
      Z06 (2002-20904): 405/405
      Both had N/A 5.7L pushrod V-8’s

    From an educated 1999 corvette owner- 174k miles. The radio, climate control, and cup holder cover still function no problem! The seat does not tilt forward freely necessarily - it goes a small amount forward (declining) - but to decline the seat up all the way there is a lever on the back. 52 mph top of 1st gear :). Bose sounds great - best base in a car without a sub. Sub par safety? I don't know about that. Highway 33 MPG @ 80 mph - dash reads 35 but it is typically off 2 MPG (I'm not talking about instantaneous MPG but extended driving 80 miles+), but fantastic MPG - it is the most aerodynamic vette made. A couple other notes - my car is optioned with memory seats/telescoping steering wheel, heads up display, active handling, and traction control - pretty dang advanced for a 1999.

    • @JohnnyRebKy
      @JohnnyRebKy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that's some good mpg. I have a 02 C5 with automatic and get around 27mpg at 70mph. Mine is still all factory stock so maybe a exhaust upgrade among other things has boosted yours up some? My interior has aged over the years. I noticed things are a bit squeaky and loose feeling now. I never was impressed with the interior in the first place but I didn't buy it for the interior either. I really despise the climate control system but to be fair I'm just old school and prefer old time manual controls. My convertible top has started leaking too. I washed it the other day and found watar all on the dash and seats. Leaks around the rear window somewhere and pretty badly apparently. Has always been garaged and never spent a night outside. I guess age gets us all at some point lol. Mine has 90k on it now. Couple years ago it started dropping some oil from the rear main somewhere. I just enjoy it and not let the aging process bother me

      I got a '98 Convertible with about 83k miles on it. Used to be my grandma's before she passed away, got handed to my mother, but she doesn't drive it often, so I am really the only one that does. Front right leaks air a little, so every couple mornings, I have to fill that up, but that's something I'm willing to do to drive that thing. Climate Control display is shot, but everything still functions, just a little bit of a guessing game, that's all. If I try really hard, I think I could get my MPG up to around 29-30, but I like to have a little fun (don't we all?). Ours is an automatic, we have all the same things, just not the telescoping steering wheel. A couple minor issues that really aren't that bad compared to some other things that could happen on a car that's not nearly as reliable as this.
      One other note, I'm a sophomore in HS, we have a group of people that drive Mustangs that think they're the coolest people in the school (3 V6 Mustangs and 2 EcoBoosts). They're always sitting in the parking lot at the end of the day revving them when people walk by. Some days I wish drag racing was legal, because we don't have anywhere that we could do that remotely close to where I live...

    Matt I think you need to revisit the C5. This car is legendary. I don't believe you deserve all the hate in the comments, but I do agree with some.
    + it is more spacious than you gave it credit for
    - the interior was okay at best even for it's time
    + it handles exceptionally well and hauls ass like a muscles car

    I really like how low you sit in the C5 Vette... Or really any of the to be honest. I've sat in a C4, a C5, and a C6 and they all feel basically the same. It feels like your putting your legs in a tunnel. I've always thought that the C5 is a pretty good looking car considering it's around 10-20 years old depending on the year. That Vette in specific sounds REALLY good too. :)

    That big smile on your face is what corvette is all about! I've been driving a 02 C5 for 8 years now. It's not good for a damn thing but fun but hell thats what they are for. I remember my first impression was how good it rode for a sports car. I was expecting a chuck wagon ride. I've rode on older vettes as my dad worked at the corvette plant for 42 years. The C5 was a big improvement in its day

    Please stay on review for this particular vehicle people. I have a simple 2004 automatic black/black convertible and, as much as I love the new body style, I will hold on to this for some time. It's a simple LS1 engine but more than enough power (outside of racing) than I need for practical useage. It does sit low to the ground and is a noisy ride, but isn't that why we bought it in the first place...to feel the road? This is a simple man or woman's sports car designed not for luxury. I previously owned a 98 but decided to move to the 04 due to the simple facts that I love the retractable headlights, and I figured they had worked out all the bugs of the earlier C5's. My 98 had several encounters with steering column lock and needed flatbeds. No factory recall, just an aftermarket fix. I wonder what's in Jay Leno's garage? My 04 LS1 convertible is the best vette yet! $25K for 25K miles, not a bad deal if you ask me. She's my baby! lol
