Misconceptions: No metal in the Americas (Pt.1) (Sub. Español)

  • Long held is the belief that the indigenous cultures of the Americas didn't develop metal working techniques before the Columbian contact in the late 15th century.
    But the truth is that the Americas also saw the development of metal working and metallurgy, and native cultures actually reached pretty notable advances on this technology before the European colonization.

    Great Video! I find it fascinating that the civilizations in mesoamerica still used obsidian more than metals despite trade routes. Why do you think this was the case?

    • @AztlanHistorian
      @AztlanHistorian  5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Well, I think there were two major reasons:
      First. Outside of Western Mesoamerica there's virtually no copper or tin to work, and gold and silver aren't good for mechanical work. So there wouldn't be good materials to use over there. Mesoamerica is actually quite poor in metallic minerals.
      Second. Obsidian is quite good for most tools that require sharpness and other stones were quite effective to make all sorts of tools, so the use of metals wasn't that necessary in the first place. You just could do whatever tools you needed with stones and local wood.

      The Americas are often portrayed as a land in which all native technological developments were behind those of Eurasia, and which there wasn't any technology that didn't exist already in the Old World, but as we can see, that's completely false.
      Platinum work was invented in the Americas, and Europe learned about the existence and usefulness of this metal from the natives of present-day Ecuador; although soon after knowing of this metal, Europeans would scientifically develop new methods to work with it.

    Certain Amerindian tribes did have bronze and iron tools but it was mostly with valuable materials and not much with armor and weapons with few exceptions have to give credit to great Amerindian civilizations like Anasasis/Pueblos, Cahokians, Olmecs, Toltecs, Mixtecs, Aztecs, Mayans, Incas, And more

      Maybe you should watch Part 2. There I talk about weapons, tools, money and many other uses of metal in the pre-Columbian Americas. :)
      Also, the branding of indigenous American peoples and nations under the generic term of "tribe" is just wrong, terribly wrong; as it ignores the complexity of the native politics and philosophies under which the ancient Americans organized themselves

    Either this guy has a really impressive English vocabulary, or he writes it first in Spanish and has it translated really well... I can speak basic Spanish, but I wouldn't know the equivalent words for things like "myriad" and "plethora"; I'd probably invent something silly like "muchas tipas" or "una gran variedad"... Anyway, I'm very impressed by this guy's English; it's better than most of us gabachos!

    I am watching this video in 2021 so I think that the info is a bit outdated. Only a few weeks ago a new study came out showing that the copper culture in the great lakes was even older than previously thought placing them among the very first cultures to work with metal, being as old, or older, than the start of metal working with copper in the middle east

    • @gabrielbrunoparreira5670
      @gabrielbrunoparreira5670 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Another interesting fact about working with Platinum in the Americas is that Platinum has a very high melting point, and the Spanish also had difficulty melting the metal with their techniques. So what the native Americans did was develop the process of sintering to make platinum artifacts with powdered platinum.
      Sintering and powder metallurgy was later improved and it is now an important metal working technique for industrial applications.

      @Gabriel Bruno Parreira I see you know your stuff. And you're right
      When I made this video I used to most recent research available at the moment, and this area of research is a pretty dynamic one, as new discoveries happen quite often; which is great, as it helps us to understand the past a lot better.
      I read the study you mention, and I thought about this very video, so I hope people who watch this keep looking into this topic, as the research will keep revealing new info in the years to come.

      But I did notice that the video was a little old so I figured I could leave the comment just in case someone was curious to learn more and in that way they could be directed to the latest information we have about the subject.
