    Maybe make the tube telescoping. The main structure tube could be expanded to 11' or collapse down to 6'. You could use the winch to extend or collapse the length of the log arch based on the size needed in the field. Just a thought.

      Or do it like large semi trailers for logs to make it a 2 part lift and use the log in the middle for the "frame" of the arch.

      I figured that is where this would go. Telescoping makes sense. Doug will probably make it powder coated, hydraulic operation, and laser engraved. It will be awesome!

    I would also add a V shaped bracket (facing down) approximately 12" from the front of the main structure tube to keep the log centered under the main structure tube. This would keep the log from wanting to shift off to the side when moving.

    Once you get the log cradled in the chain, reposition the grapple closer to the end and lift it some. This would help transfer weight farther to the front.

    I would second your last comment regarding lengthening the main beam. That was my initial thought as I watched you & Adam having to adjust the log on the way back. I wondered too if you make a plate with a pivoting wheel that you could put underneath the log on the end, providing you can get it under the log, and use a ratchet strap to hold it in place. Like rear landing gear. 😊

  • @akbychoice
    @akbychoice ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Used something similar behind snowmachines to build trap line cabins. But they were two pieces like to small sleds logs were tied to both one at the front and one at the rear.

  • @toddcaskey9984
    @toddcaskey9984 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Make an extra log arch that you can add when you have logs over 12 ' or some bogie wheel to the end of the logs or an extension you can add to the front that can be added & subtracted the box rail tube that can be held on to the log arch when not needed . The possibilities are endless lol

    I'm actually in the process of building a log arch because I have a homemade sawmill but I don't like dragging my logs through dirt, mud etc. the current length on the bottom is just over 7' 6" at the pivot point. However, I will be making some different things to accommodate for longer and shorter logs. Mine will have more overall height than the one y'all used. I think I have the geometry figured out about right depending on weight and diameter of the log.

  • @DanielDavis-jk2su
    @DanielDavis-jk2su ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Do you think adding an adjustable extension to the main beam would allow for longer pieces? Release 1 or 2 pins, pull the main beam apart, exposing an inner beam or sleeve, so as to adjust the overall length of the cart? How would that affect the stability and lifting/cradling capacity of the cart?

    I've started making trails in my woods and I would love to get the bigger ones out for fence posts and other projects. Was watching Capt Kleeman's channel and he has a few videos on his log arch. Take a look at his and see if you can figure out a way to add a few feet or tubing out the back to help with the weight distribution. I'm going to take your info and the Capts log arch and see what I can find. Thanks for a great video of an applicable topic for me.

    Get some square tube extend the length or add a 2nd one with wheels

  • @JasperFromMS
    @JasperFromMS ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You need a dolly (with castering wheels?) That you can attach to the tail end of the log. That way, tongue weight wouldn't be a problem.

  • @randallquiring9525
    @randallquiring9525 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I instantly thought of a longer/extendable (tube within a tube) hitch. However, I then see your point of needing a separate lifting method up front.

  • @robertwazniak9495
    @robertwazniak9495 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Cut the arch just ahead of the winch, add an internal tube with pins for various lengths. Also, replace the winch cable with a synthetic line. If anything breaks, it will probably be the wire and you don’t want to get hit by that. Get as much iron out of the tension system as possible. An arch near the front of the log can help trap it left to right and add tongue weight.

  • @Bundys
    @Bundys ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Another vote for telescoping main beam with adjustable friction stop, you could drill holes and use pins but it would weaken it slightly. Makes it eaiser to store and get the balance point right on short or long logs. I'd vote for a 12v winch versus the hand crank. 🤘

  • @JCWren
    @JCWren ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Extend the overall length of it by a little over 1/2 of whatever the maximum log length the sawmill can handle is, replace the manual winch with an electric winch (you've got power on the ATV), put a T-bar close to where the front chain hooks are so that when lifting two logs you've got something for the log to cantilever against until you can get the chain under it (maybe weld a 2" box section at 90 degrees to the boom so the T-bar is removable). If you're going to try to carry two logs, seems there needs to be a mechanism for offset the winch cable so you're not lifting from the center of the cart.
    And I know you know this, but too much tongue weight is about as bad as too little. Having steering capability is always a good thing :)

  • @gilbertfagley7837
    @gilbertfagley7837 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    my thought thought while watching it was you need the main beam be telescoping like on an engine heist. then when you have a long log, just extend it out. like your idea arch hoop on the front to keep the tail heavy logs in place for the ride back.

  • @JimFinlayson
    @JimFinlayson ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice ideas so far, I look forward to the next one where you extend the arch for longer logs 😀. BTW, leave the fake drama for the Discovery Channel. Your content is too good.

  • @richardwentland3489
    @richardwentland3489 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I admit my suggestions are off the page but a 4 wheel trailer like GP outdoors or Sawing with Sandy is the solution. You’d be able to haul more than 1 or 2 logs too. Surely the pull vehicle would have to be heavier, like your tractor. Yeah I’m that guy this time.

  • @michaelosmon
    @michaelosmon ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I saw a young man make his own small version of this on the channel traplines and inlines. Seemed to work a lot better if he backed the skidder over the top of the log, he dragged the logs around scraping the ground though. Anyway cool project, I look forward to seeing the follow up.

  • @darthgbc363
    @darthgbc363 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can use the log grapple to lift the front half of log. Add a pulley that diverts cable to one side of center tube right after winch. Remove pin off rear pulley to allow cable to move forward.
    If you are going to lengthen log arch, move rear pulley to lift center of log. Maybe make rear pulley on a moveable crane assembly. Extend a tube out the back too.

  • @buildlife
    @buildlife ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Pretty cool improvement. Could you get a another grabber on the front and rig up a winch that lifts them both at the same time? I guess it would have to be short logs or a longer arch. Maybe an electric winch and some 40" off road tires LOL!

  • @johnkirby6547
    @johnkirby6547 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey guy's great ideas there.. like many others I would make the main tube telescoping, add a v brace in the front to control the sides of the log and swap that winch with the cable out for 1 that uses a soft line much safer, if something comes loose or breaks..

  • @kevramsell8715
    @kevramsell8715 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It’s pretty much the consensus that the length needs extending, I would cut the topbar and weld/bolt a smaller one inside that extends the length, drill a series of holes to pin the other section in place to make an adjustable log arch.

    Can you make the bar telescope in some way?
    Also make a V at the hitch end to center the log automatically.
    To prevent run out of the winch, replace with a synthetic line it's stronger and can get close to double the distance.

  • @davesauerzopf6980
    @davesauerzopf6980 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A strap winch for sure. I would consider a little larger grapple hook and then raise the roller a bit higher to get the grapple further back and lift the back of the tree to obtain more tongue weight. Like a weight distribution bar for a trailer. And some sides that are adjustable in the front to hold the tree/s in place. Not sure what the weight capacity is for the trailer and tongue which should be taken into consideration. I am 99.999999% sure you already have a plan! Great video guys!

      When the cable twists, they are correct. Lol
      Doesn’t matter where you put them, when the cable is in tension, they move.

    • @robertwazniak9495
      @robertwazniak9495 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they do move, you don’t have them on tight enough. And, yes, the saddles need to be on the live end and not the loose tail. Definitely a rigging industry standard.

  • @TheBluecollartrademan
    @TheBluecollartrademan ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Had a few ideas, one a harbor freight winch and a quick disconnect to battery, or a brake winch and a drive on the end of the handle for a impactor or battery impact, you could do a larger square tube in the center frame and used two hitch pins and change the length or just weld it and have it 8-10ft long. I am actually really surprised they put the lift point behind the wheels cause it’s always going to have leverage to lift up on the hitch. A heavy jack with a spike on it to keep from sliding the machine when winching. Lots of ideas just how far you want to go or what your wanting to actually do with it. And trying to explain over text

  • @GerardM37
    @GerardM37 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If not telescoping I would say just a extend it. You can make a adjustable stop. It can adjust for upward and forward movement. Lifting entire unit would help ground clearance or increasing hitch point because grappler is long. Keeps cable clamps out of the roller. Extra chain and winch is good ideas.

    How about modifying the Push Rod to a T-Handle for pulling the chain, but also "Plasti-Dip" the handle for color & grip?
    Maybe also add a 12v smaller Winch, with a waterproof power port on the rear of each machine that can be plugged in like a Trailer?
    For the "Toung Lift", you could use a Ratchet Strap...

  • @jeffpeters1014

    Remove the winch and add an ATV winch at the top of the log arch. A tool battery might be enough to drive it or connect to the Utv supply. That allows you to use a remote and gets you out of the line of fire should something let go suddenly.
