As a boilermaker I'd say you did well mate. Just one bit of advice. If your welder is getting hot and you want to give it a rest don't just turn it off. Leave it running for 10 minutes first before turning off will help cool it down more effectively. Great work mate
Absolute genius. You rrally are the Chief O'Brien when it comes to projects, thinking on your feet, and launching into something based entirely on a rough image in your head. If I were putting a nuclear bunker team together, you would be exactly the guy to lead the rebuild in a post disaster scenario. Great work.
Good job! Kris. Don't Skid your logs with that nice winch. First put a, Tow Strap around the log's front, leaving one eye. Hook a chain to that eye and up to the upside down "Y". A lot stronger. Skid your logs up to where you can get at it, and reset the log on your Carrier with the winch and straps. Have fun!
A thing of beauty and practicality is always a wonder to behold. I am so proud of the way you think things ALL the way through, belt n braces. Its never a 'that'll do job'. You are stoic Kris. Bloody well done. Xx
Great project that should work very well for you Kris. Once you’re done with it and you sell it you will be sure to need it again for your next project after the workshop is done.
very good job and you did a good job explaining. You might want to add a ring so you can loop your cable under heavy logs to give some mechanical advantage but you'll figure that out I'm sure. Best of luck to you
Clever contraption. For really heavy loads you might want to consider welding gussets to the joints that are not reinforced by structural supports. Gussets take a lot of tension of the butt joints and don't interfere with the structure. Regarding your welding: I have seen much worse produced by people who make their living with welding! :-)
as a retired-coded welder son, Them welds will hold up well did you know a weld 1" weld & a 5'mm thick weld with good penetration will shear at 50 tones. & that is a standard tack. If you grinding a slit v angle on a bit of steel box. it will have good penetration & weld flat at 2" fully waded & ground flat. will be = to a 3mm weld 2"=To a 6" Wels & that weld will hold (200'ton) before shearing the fact is it will collapse before the weld if it were to bend in the application you going to use it for. Now it will shear. at twice the lowd, if one puts a signal weld over the top of each weld. & it would be dubbed to 400 tons but it will bend before it shears. In the application you are to apply it to A suitable valid weld with a slit 1mm gap will allow the weld to penitent forming a root to the weld so it forms a weld on the inside of the steel you are welding & the resulting fill weld will fit the v that is sufficient adding a second cap weld. after depressing is Belt a brass & is often the profred choice. it is a very good job👍💖Les England It is quit nice. job son.
Hey there Kris. Just saw your interview you did that posted on Barcroft TV. So glad you did it. This shared a prospective on your project that I find inspiring. Keep crackin' on and hope you do another interview later on. While your videos are great having a professional interviewer tell your story brings a different prospective with a good narrative too.
When lifting the logs with the front up against the upside-down V make sure the off centre weight does not put too much lift on the ball hitch, it can either pop the ball hitch or start lifting the rear of the van, in the second case it can cause snaking, loss of breaking, and loss of control of the van.
I'm no welder and one thing I know for sure is welds don't need to look pretty to be GOOD WELDS and all pretty welds are NOT good welds I think yours are fine great project!
Great little project! Just a tip, unless you thought of it yourself. Did you disconnect your 4x4 battery before welding as you could fry your electrics in your truck as the tow bar is bolted to the chassis obviously and your welder is chucking all that voltage through your vehicle. Great job though! Looks cool!
Good job!! Looks great. Can't wait to see it in action. Ya know, the next project after this is building is finished could be a wood mizer to cut wood to sell or for making other projects. I've been watching Out Of The Woods videos and he's re-purposing a shed that was a rabbit breeding building to hold his wood mizer.
I agree with the idea of turning it into a trailer when needed - a few holes for bolts in the frame, and a box that can be fixed on with a tarp over the top. Multifunctional, the way forward....
3m thick box No gusset needed that will be over kill . yes if he is going to carry loges over 3 ton over ruff ground at speed , then possibly gussets of some type but for his application not necessary.
Not for nothing but if you're running that shielded metal arc welding (SMAW/ "stick") electrode properly mill scale is the least of your worries on this. The size of the base metal, ie the wall thickness of that square tube is going to be your Achilles heel. Edit: your welds look fine.
Outstanding build. When no longer needed, rent it out... And you have a new business welding these up for people. Also lots of people have a need for small welding jobs but they are unable to weld. You could make side money doing small welding jobs at your place!
you could have something for the logs to rest on if you built in a few bars on hinges. They could be pulled out across the bottom. under the log, and clipped down on the other side if you get my drift. From one side of the frame to the other. That way the log would actually have a base to rest on. Just an idea / thought.
no not for this applicator it a drag trailer it wool not be caring them on the roads at. lest i do not think so. for of road us only it is lick a jet skiey trailer i use to Mack. only a lilting board required.
Good work! I've been thinking about something like this to lift ton bags of firewood from dry storage to the house... I'm worrying if it is heavy to lift onto the tow hitch? What sort of weight will it lift?
I think it's a great build, but I think you should add braces from the front of the upright down to the sides angling out from the hitch. Those heavy logs will wreak havoc on that upright weld there when they swing when you're moving, even if it's just a little bit of swinging. Better to have something over engineered than under. Anyway, that's my opinion. Thanks for sharing the video.
Put some chain catches on the front inverse U shape where the near end of the log rests, that way you can secure the log with a chain in the near end should you need to.
did you look at and test if a car hood/bonnet would be useful in your wooded areas - I do like your design and thinking - next upgrade an electric motor for the winch?
I always learned that a trailer should transfer as little as possible downward weight to the rear suspension of the car. That's why 2 wheel trailers have the wheels in the middle. The car is just for pulling not lifting. Although I think you'll be fine.
Kris, I'm sure you've considered this but make sure you don't overload the towing capacity of your van. Apart from being dangerous, PC Plod will hand out significant fines if your load is too heavy.
The van can tow about 2 ton no problem but this will only be loaded with logs off road. it will only ever go on road empty to get it to where i am going to move logs on forestry tracks and on my property. i wont be moving logs on the road with it.
i learned to weld with a stick welder. never used it again after getting a wire welder. way more fun not having to wank off the handle trying to start an arc with a stick
Great job buddy looks the dogs dangles that does! Nice design too. Are you planning on taking the Delica Into the woods to skid the timber out or are you going to use something else? Nice wheel choice too should spread the weight well!
Hi Kris, super job on your new toy. I'm no welder either but it looks really good and all this experience goes a long way. I see Dot's a dab hand with a brush, maybe you should teach her to weld? I don't know if you follow April Wilkerson on youtube but she recently made a gantry thing attachment for logging with her trailer, worth a look. If you were using this on the road would you need some kind of crossmember(s) to rest the load on? Stay safe and keep up the good work.
For road legal do you need a safety chain (secondary coupling that loops from the vehicle frame to the trailer)? That way if it disconnects it stays with the vehicle and doesn't end up in some poor buggers living room :D
Interestigly enough the first ever motorised vehicle was a "charrier", a cannon carrier designed to lift and transport napoleonian type cannons the same way you lift logs with your trailer.
Can't knock it! When you have finished, you could always cover it with a sheet, turn it over and take Dot for a trip on the pond! Seriously, you are making it happen while I am sat on my bum!
AndyRoo2 what meant wha, you go to the scrap yard pick what you want and buy it right? Take it home and build what ever you want. How the hell, or why the hell would they care what you were building with it, and how would they know in the first damn place.
The would not let me walk around the place because of insurance. They were not insured for public to wAlk about and find what they want while lorries come in and out.
Not for what i have built this for. im planning on skidding 4-6 logs at a time with it on a forestry track so the winch is the best option for the job i need this for.

Well-planned, looks solid, nice design, an appearance by Dot, and the paint supervising cat. Thanks for the upload, Kris.
Absolute genius. You rrally are the Chief O'Brien when it comes to projects, thinking on your feet, and launching into something based entirely on a rough image in your head. If I were putting a nuclear bunker team together, you would be exactly the guy to lead the rebuild in a post disaster scenario. Great work.
Congratulations Kris - a superb bit of engineering with the bare minimum of tools - very impressive.
Good job! Kris. Don't Skid your logs with that nice winch. First put a, Tow Strap around the log's front, leaving one eye. Hook a chain to that eye and up to the upside down "Y". A lot stronger. Outstanding Kris. Love the way you work without drawn plans but the finished result always looks so professional!
I like the results and some of your techniques.
God Bless You.
Great project that should work very well for you Kris. Once you’re done with it and you sell it you will be sure to need it again for your next project after the workshop is done.

That’s a great looking trailer. I believe that for trailers to be road legal in the UK they also need red triangular reflectors on the rear.
I'm no welder and one thing I know for sure is

lay some boards across the bottom, a tarp over the top & you've got a mobile tent!
I love the way you're so resourceful and multi-talented!
Nice log arch looks good we need one of these for our Offgrid farm too
Your shed build looks good
I liked your shed too, great idea!
Everyone needs one lol
I'll be watching you nice channel!
Me too nice shed

Wow great job, well planed out. Now I can make one using your Ideas. Thanks
Nice work Kris, looking forward to watching you haul the roof timbers with that bad boy!
I'm beginning to think you can do anything. I looks awesome.
Great job Kris looks great. I think it's been said all ready but maybe add some gussets they will add a lot of strength
3m thick box No gusset needed that will be over kill . yes if he is going to carry loges over 3 ton over ruff ground at speed , then possibly gussets of some type but for his application not necessary.
Excellent job!
I am always in Awe of people who can make Things. Unfortunately I am not one of the Skilled people, so I just watch.
Welds look great, practice makes perfect!
Not for nothing but if you're running that shielded metal arc welding (SMAW/ "stick") electrode properly mill scale is the least of your worries on this. The size of the base metal, ie the wall thickness of that square tube is going to be your Achilles heel.

This is absolutely awesome Kris!
To be road legal I think you’ll need some mudguards on it too. Cool build Dude.
indeed i belive you are correct, nice Build Kris!
Here in the u.s. you just put an ag triangle on it and call it farm equipment.
a big thumbs up.and it looks like it passed the wobble test tooooo/
I like the green colour, it suits your lifestyle.
you could have something for the logs to rest on if you built in a few bars on hinges. They could be pulled out across the bottom. under the log, and clipped down on the other side if you get my drift. From one side of the frame to the other.

i dig the design and dang good work on the welder sir
Yet another excellent effort my friend. :)
You are brilhante at everything
Great job Kris on the trailer :)
Looks super to us! Fun watching the video!
Wow, that's a big job, nice work.
If you raise the log, slide a couple of rails across the trailer then lower the log onto them it will be way more stable in transit.
Great creativity. I hope you put a guard up front or travel (slowly) with your tailgate open so you don't lose a window
IF THEY DON'T SALE WHAT YOU NEED.
NO PROBLEM 👈🏼
JUST MAKE IT YOURSELF 👍🏼 ......
WELL DONE THERE KRIS 👏🏼 ......
( KNUCKLE👊🏽BUMP ) Kris Harbour.....
Nice job
Brilliant job as usual. Quick question don't trailers pulling over a certain weight require a braking system to be safe?
no not for this applicator it a drag trailer it wool not be caring them on the roads at. lest i do not think so. for of road us only it is lick a jet skiey trailer i use to Mack. only a lilting board required.
Good work! I've been thinking about something like this to lift ton bags of firewood from dry storage to the house... I'm worrying if it is heavy to lift onto the tow hitch? What sort of weight will it lift?
If a weld doesn't break, it's perfect. You'll have offcuts of that box section....perfect for making large dice......see mine.
It really does look like a proper thing
I think it's a great build, but I think you should add braces from the front of the upright down to the sides angling out from the hitch. Those heavy logs will wreak havoc on that upright weld there when they swing when you're moving, even if it's just a little bit of swinging. Better to have something over engineered than under. Awesome, i admire that you can work without having a fantsy workshop. I blame everyhting that i dont do on exactly that "I have no place to work" ^^
hold the rod closer, increase your amps by about 15 and clean the metal.
good luck rewelding.
Nice build kris
Brilliant!!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nice job!
Put some chain catches on the front inverse U shape where the near end of the log rests, that way you can secure the log with a chain in the near end should you need to.
could u add a hing point at the top of the other end of the trailer so u can winch logs towards the vav and up
did you look at and test if a car hood/bonnet would be useful in your wooded areas - I do like your design and thinking - next upgrade an electric motor for the winch?
I have a big plastic nose cone I use 👍 you can see it in a hydro video and when I pulled out the log for the workshop door frame
oh yes - I forgot about that
I always learned that a trailer should transfer as little as possible downward weight to the rear suspension of the car. That's why 2 wheel trailers have the wheels in the middle. The car is just for pulling not lifting.
Although I think you'll be fine.
When moving long logs that it is designed to move the balance will be further back and the weight over the weels
@@KrisHarbour ah sure! that explains. nice build!
Your in your element when you are creating, great to watch. And you painted it British racing green, should help a lot on the motorway. 😁
Clever problem solving👍
Nice job .👍
Be v careful with no hitch weight on trailer. With the balance of a long log it will lift on the hitch and make your van unstable.
Good work bud
Kris, I'm sure you've considered this but make sure you don't overload the towing capacity of your van. Apart from being dangerous, PC Plod will hand out significant fines if your load is too heavy.

I want to make a frame for an ebike. I've never welded before, this helps
Can you pull this with the tractor for places your van can't go?
4:40 Hey Kris, there's a spring over there, just under the soil ;)
hope you disconected the earth on the car battery b4 welding on hitch ??
Exactly what I was thinking. I've seen the results of not disconnecting the battery. It was the boss' fault, thankfully.
Nice job! is all I can say, nice vid also!
Cool unit KH
Think you might need wheel arches to take on the road
Hi, how did your off grid power supply manage with all the welding?
Its either an engine welder or he is using a generator you can hear it rev when he strikes an arc.
Hi Kris, super job on your new toy. I'm no welder either but it looks really good and all this experience goes a long way. I see Dot's a dab hand with a brush, maybe you should teach her to weld? I have a two ton webbing strap for that purpose.
Interestigly enough the first ever motorised vehicle was a "charrier", a cannon carrier designed to lift and transport napoleonian type cannons the same way you lift logs with your trailer.
did you still use vegi oil on your van?
Sweet
Hey dude why couldn't the hitch go into the square pipe instead of on top?! super bothered
900kg? It looks so strong as if it could pick up much more....but then I am not an expert on this.
Beware the cinetic energy in a turn at high speed. The tree must not bounce. It must be blocked.
TH-cam algorithm here we go.
I spy the cat at 14:30!
what happens if you forget the earth?
It won't weld! Not a big problem, but you feel very silly!
nothing. that's the joke a welder doesn't work if there's no circuit
nothing
Might work better with tractor.
Can't knock it! When you have finished, you could always cover it with a sheet, turn it over and take Dot for a trip on the pond! Seriously, you are making it happen while I am sat on my bum!
Let me know if you need an apprentice...
Did he just say nippel?
They have always been known as grease nipples in U.K. America call them zerks because the man who invented them was Oscar Zerk.
Scrap yard wouldn’t seek you anything???? That sounds strange to me.
Sounds pretty normal to me. Tesco won't even let you eat out of their bins.
Kris Harbour thank you for clarifying. Clearly different than our scrap yards I guess.
Instead of keeping steel local they would rather ship it to china , damn scrap yards are a joke.
Have you considered using the beam as lever and the wheels as fulcrum, instead of using a winch? Like th-cam.com/video/B4IJPpLQVlo/w-d-xo.html
Not for what i have built this for. im planning on skidding 4-6 logs at a time with it on a forestry track so the winch is the best option for the job i need this for.
Hi Kris another great job, check this web site out www.turbulent.be/ hydro power that may be good for your place.
