I had the same issue with my Ford 4000 over the last several years. I replaced the starter at least two times, maybe three times. I replace the battery at least once. I think I just discovered that much of that was unnecessary. The issue for me was the four-post starter solenoid that is designed to act like a relay, and translate power through the ignition switch Into power from the battery to the starter. It is located on the backside of a metal bracket just above and to the left of the starter. The starter solenoid depends upon a good electrical connection between the bracket on the top of the starter solenoid, and the bracket to which it attaches, I.e. engine ground. The bracket on the top of my starter solenoid was rusty, where it attached to ground, and as a result, I was losing a lot of voltage through the starter solenoid. I cleaned that up with a wire brush, and it works perfectly now.

Success is stumbling from one failure to the next without losing any enthusiasm

man, so glad you’re making videos on this! i think i’m having issues with my Ford 2000 starter. terrible banging sound when i try to start. took off the starter and the fly wheel teeth look like they’ve taken a beating. do you know at what point it’s necessary to replace the flywheel?

I have similar problem, the start makes a single clunk noise when turn the key. I took the starter off and I tried to move the fly wheel (in and out of gear) with a bar but it won't budge. Any ideas

Ah that grinding sounds like my 8n tho that last bit is definitely something my 601 is doing.

I just ordered a new one. Something isn’t engaging in that one.

Yanasa Ama Ranch I just took out the starter on my 8n and that thing is shaved and was covered in metal shavings, so that’s one problem down. So thanks for the proxy help with that lol. All that’s left now is the 601 which I’ll look at that if it doesn’t rain tomorrow

Sounds like your solenoid is disengaging to me.

I think that tractor needs a complete tune up or something.

Absolutely, when it does crank the tractor won’t fire up, that’s a bad tune. If it’s points and condenser, junk them and make it electronic with a Pertronix kit. Best thing I ever did for my Bobcat 642b. Went from unreliable to very reliable.

Well, it did say FORD...Fix Or Repair Daily.....My father-in-law had a 8N and he always said FORD stood for Found On Ranch Dead...Gotta give you an A for effort. You’re a good man with a great attitude. Keep up the good work as it will (really!) pay off someday....maybe not in wealth but in satisfaction knowing you did your best.
