Chichester Canal

  • In the early19th century there was need to transport goods inland to prevent imported and exported goods being pinched by the French in the channel during the Napoleonic Wars. Canal Mania was at it height and a route from London to Portsmouth was dug. Chichester saw the importance of being attached to that navigation and the ship canal was tacked on to the waterway. Martin Snow and I go to investigate.

Excellent video, I believe the Selsey Tramway bridged the canal at one point, would you make an episode about that other now almost forgotten transport link?

Great to see the orange-tastic Martin! Beautiful walk along the canal. It's obvious a very popular walk w/ the locals.😀👍 Thanks for another bit of interesting history!

Hi Richard, I want to walk this bit of canal from Hunston. Me and my late hubby used to stay in a b&b in Selsey and we'd often drive through Hunston not realising the canal was there! I found the car park last time I stayed a couple of years ago, so when I can drive that far, I'll go exploring.

Great video Richard, it brought back happy memories of my youth when I walked that same section but towards Chichester with a friend of mine and two local girls we were seeing at the time.

The whole walk is lovely all the way down to Birdham, then if you like you can carry on along the harbour to west wittering

Another good way to enjoy the Chichester Canal is to hire a rowing boat at the wharf and row along it a couple of miles and maybe take a picnic. The canal is not as yet navigable all the way to Chichester Harbour but you can get a fair way along it past the bend at Hunston.

The British and their city names, I swear I bit my tongue twelve times just by saying the name of this town.

Richard Vobes like Cambridgeshire and all the other Shires are complete tongue twisters in my opinion.

Oh dear - your poor tongue! Don't try places like Bracklesham Bay, Gloucestershire or Leominster - (actually pronounced Lempster).

Richard Vobes ouch bit my tongue again trying to pronounce them lol.
