I drive neither Toyota or IFS but if I did this would be a really valuable insight. Basically the quality we all want to make ourselves but never have the patience to do. 😅
Excellent comparison!!! I really appreciated your nuanced summary of why you decided to switch out. It was great to hear how your style of driving impacted your decision. I like the idea of prepping a car to go fast but there is a limit to how many dollars I am willing to throw at things. Great job!!!
You do a great job of explaining the technical information so that most could digest and use it to make decisions. Quality suspension manufacturers should invite your opinion and those that make nothing more than a " lift Kit" for mall crawling big tires may fear it.. The manufacturer should just be honest about their intentions but the price of a kit pretty much tells that story. Anyone should see that the time it takes you to compile your data is major. I doubt many lift companies invest this much but installing and reinstalling parts, raising vehicles and all involved is a lot of work and will reflect in the price of a system. The Yota guys especially should really appreciate your work..
Thank you so much for such a detailed and well thought out comparison. I can't imagine how much time went into this effort, but wow! This has to be the best explanation and critique out there. Bravo Sir! I've subscribed!
Great job my man! Something to think about when Dirt King pushes the wheel forward they limit the cv angles since it’s no longer centered, which is why their axel shaft is longer to help accommodate that change addressing the plunge as well.
One of the best videos I’ve ever seen on this subject thank you very much for taking the time in doing it. You help me make my decision on which one I will be going with when I upgrade my suspension an upper and lower control arms. Thank you very much.
Have watched your videos to date and subscribed. Thinking out loud here, it's one thing that you understand all this, it's quite another that you have the ability to relate it to all of us. Thanks, and well done.
Awesome video. This is the first video I have seen with proper comparison and testing on off road products. You got something good here man! Hope you keep it up!
Such great data. Thanks for all this. I have Dirt King lower arms in stock length and you have me curious about wearing them out quicker due to positive caster. After 20,000 miles, I took it all apart and noticed that the bushings had take some shape of LCA bolt hole. Not necessarily deformed, but more than likely normal wear for 4+ degrees of caster. Maybe I'll just replace them next teardown.
Thanks! I’d say if the bushings aren’t torn. Don’t bother replacing them. Delrin is thermoplastic and will stress relax/creep. So it taking the new shape might actually bear the load better (just my speculation lol). I used to have total chaos +2 LT with poly bushings. They would start tearing at the end surface where it contacts the frame brackets.
in regards to the cv axle topic. When you have a cv axle that is shorter and slides inside the inner tripod housing aka the housing on the differential not the hub. when it is extended out while in a full doop situation if you are heavy on the gas pedal or get into a bouncing situation it can shatter that entire inside housing . Yes I have def done that before. Not on my FJ but I have done it several times on a lifted 2 door tahoe bc the lift it had caused the cv's to be at a bad angle just sitting normal but when it got to offroading in any situation such as I described. BOOM... I have installed the Total Chaos +2 inch long travel on my 2010 fj and I love it.
Thanks so much. You really cut through the fluff and break everything down with facts. I'll be installing a long travel suspension this summer as soon as I take delivery of my new TRD Offroad this summer. Great job presenting this information!
Keep em coming buddy! Your videos are awesome sauce! Have a 3rd gen 4runner, and your videos really help me with making decision on what i need fpr my build! Keep up the GREAT work!
You just made me feel much better about my purchase of my dirt king set up. Reading and researching the differences I chose dirt king because of the reputation and price along with their design. But I didn’t know anything like this about them. Thank buddy
Bravo on a great comparison! My 93 Hilux runs Total Chaos 3.5 with triple bypass so I am not in the market for either of these kits but I sincerely enjoyed your video. Excellent job going over the technical issues on each of these and all the 'little' details to consider.. Liked, Subd' and looking forward to your next video.
Yes i would love to see a future video on the major differences of LT IFS vs. stock style lifts, and this video was well composed and you were very informative on all the hot topics of the comparison
Without rubbing a LT kit, im just putting in a UCA, should i do the dirt king Heim or bushings version? Potentially in the future adding the gear for a LT kit
Would you recommend the Heim join UCA for Dirt king or Bushing UCA? Im not looking to running long travel, for now, maybe in the future. What are your thoughts?
This video needs more exposer. I myself have Camburg UCA's on my Tacoma. Eventually would like to LT it. These are the real world, down and dirty numbers. Thanks for video my friend.
I've watched all of your videos and they never disappoint. So interesting and really informative. Got a question though, do you by any chance know if these long travel kits would fit an 8th gen Hilux? Read somewhere that they share suspension with Tacoma
Kai, any thoughts about the Marlin crowler front suspension for Toyotas now that is available? Comparison with long travel suspension for off roading? Hope you get to make a video about it. Thank you for all the great videos!
Man your channel came to clear a lot of doubts many of us off roaders have, really appreciated. I was wondering if you can talk about why and how to correct the camber when lifting the car. I've found the more you lift your car the higher the positive camber gets. I've heard that some brands sells extended lower control arm to correct the problem with adjustable uca too, but I wish to know your approach
Having paid almost 6K for a full mid-travel kit I wish I would have done a +2 long travel kit, the amount of actual articulation from a mid travel kit is barely more than stock. I’m checking out all the options leaning towards a JD fab kit. Camburg also has a +2 kit called Trail Series that uses OEM mid travel coil overs. Thanks for the super helpful comparison here🤙🏽
This is a fantastic series! I forwarded this to a few other friends of mine that have Toyotas. Really appreciate the work that you put into these. Also, were you at a NAC event in Maine last October? I remember briefly talking to some FJ guys, I think we may have met haha.
@@TinkerersAdventurehaha, cool! Once I saw the video with your FJ I was pretty certain it was you haha. I have a mostly stock silver early (13) Trail Edition 4Runner.
This was a fantastic video and had exactly the information I need for the mods I am considering. Thank you very much for such a comprehensive and detailed video.
Doing great with the video. Do you miss the uniball frame pivots of the camburg? That seems like Camburg's selling point and I've mentioned to them about the uniball adapter and LCA height but they still don't consider it an issue nor needs improving. I don't mind the DK Delrin lowers and don't notice binding but the practice of uniball frame pivots sounds enticing.
Thanks. I don't miss the frame uniballs and actually glad i got rid of them...I replaced mine twice and it was a pain. I don't need the high misalignment with dirtking's forward biased LCA so the bind free feature is not enticing anymore. I don't have high horse power or go real fast so the extra rigidity of uniball is also not important to me. But i know you got that good stuff under the hood and go flying on 39s, uniball frame pivots might be good for you.
Thank you. I ran Total Chaos standard +2 kit prior to my Camburg setup. Their original standard kit design was not great. Their expedition series has come a long way. I don't have first hand experience with that so I can't comment in details. What I can tell is TC will have less drop due to it's UCA uniball cup angle. However, I do like it uses chromoly steel for both upper and lower arms. They reduce the weight by going thinner material while maintain the strength.
Hi Kai, I really enjoy all your videos. I always find them informative and insightful. I have a 2008 GX470. It sits on 34’s (285/75/17 BFG ko2’s) and a 2-1/2 lift. I use it as my daily driver. It has impeccable on road manners given its configuration. So, I'm hesitant to go overboard with modifications. Like most wheelers, I enjoy the occasional rock crawling trip, but the majority of my wheeling just relates to overlanding, with trips across Colorado, Idaho, the Pacific NW and Alaska. I am considering a trip through Mexico to Central America soon too. Given the distances and varied terrain I cover, I’m primarily focused on reliability and durability on trails that could be much more isolated than some of the more popular trails. I’m also looking for increased wheel travel for the more challenging sections of trails though, so I considered long-travel kits. I recently rewatched your video on Toyota ifs long travel kits. in your opinion should I even consider a long travel suspension given my type of driving? How does long travel compare to the factory set up?
They were both RCV axles. The old ones have Dana 60 outers and 930 CV inners. The new ones have Toyota specific outers that is same size as stock, and double offset inner joints.
I'm new to trucks, but with traction mattering as much as it does do you ever measure your corner weights? Flex is cool, but is it putting weight where it's most useable? Love your approach!
Excellent information, My rig is a 2011 LexusGX460 with Toyo opencountryMT35x12.5R18 SPC UCA, BODY MOUNT CHOP, 1.25 SPACER original rims, 3 inch Dobinson suspensión, I want to know a comparison about reliability between factory and extended travel, also how it's compare in real world Offroading, thanks and hi from Puerto Rico
Can we all take a second to appreciate how much time and effort went into this video! Thanks for all the information. 🍻

Incredibly comprehensive. Anyone could benefit from this, not just Toyota people. What a great series.

Appreciate the kind words man. Yeah took me a long long time. But luckily working on my FJ and my camera are both my hobbies so I enjoyed the process!
Great job my man! Something to think about when Dirt King pushes the wheel forward they limit the cv angles since it’s no longer centered, which is why their axel shaft is longer to help accommodate that change addressing the plunge as well.
That is good to know, thanks!
Pushing the wheel forward helps fit larger tires and increases the approach angle.
