Love your vids- instant sub.. I have a ‘10 FJ with the Camburg UCAs in the vid- the handling improvement alone after a lift was worth it as this it is also a daily
Just for knowledge sharing's sake, not at all a criticism. Those Dobinson UCAs are drop forged 6082 aluminum then CNC machined, not actually billet. Most of the billet arms on the market (Icon, Camburg, etc) are made from 6061. Good info!
Dobinsons Billet > have had SPC, balljoints don't last even with regular Moly grease application, almost every set ive installed has come back for balljoints within 2-3 years. Thats ridiculious imho... Have had Dobinsons standard duty, they are good but couldn't get the alignment perfect so jumped on the billet soon as they came out. You don't really see any BJ or bushing failures with the factory style parts. Install and keep them clean, like you said and forget about them. The rest, no so much...
Just wanted to say nice video guys after a lot of research and your video was very helpful I decided to go spc upper control arms and I’m very satisfied with the outcome it made all the difference in the world
You guys rock. Thank you for this video. I now have a path forward. This video is really helpful and I would love to see the LCA video. I am running SPC and they have failed once, going to move to something stronger and more durable. I'm not afraid of the maintenance.
If you guys did this video with some information about what kinds of forces the UCA and UBJ endure, it would be a Toyota owner must-see. If you did, though, it would reveal that most of these options are overkill for anything that isn’t desert racing… even the SPC is overkill for any trail you can get an IFS vehicle up. Any Toyota truck owner looking to mod should watch this video. ⭐️
Extremely knowledgeable! I am building my custom suspension for my 2020 Tundra. It is a daily driver, but will overland and light offroad with it, travel, and occasionally haul, so I don't need anything too crazy. I just want to lift my truck, but have the reliability, quality, and capability. After this I am definitely, for my application, am getting the Camburg UCA's. Great video and thanks for helping me understand the differences between the brands UCA's. I was debating between Freedom Offroad, Bilstein, Camburg, and JBA's, and Icon. Wheew...tough competition and tough choice. I don't need anything too crazy because i am not rock climbing or doing heavy off-roading with my Tundra since it's my daily as well. I do plan on buying a Tacoma built for overlanding/off-roading in the future, in a few years after I retire from the service.
I need something that can take the abuse of working in a steel mill. Tons of train tracks and the muck of slag/mud mix so being sealed off from the debris is an absolute must for me + the 50 mile highway drive. Might end up with some Icon delta UCA's
Very informative video. I can definitely see the benefits of aftermarket upper control arms, especially as regards geometry correction. But most of these strike me as somewhat overbuilt for most needs. I especially struggle with the cost of upper control arms. The price seems so high given the relative simplicity. A really high ratio of cost to intrinsic value I feel.
Love the detailed analysis! Is there a reason you didn’t cover the Ironman UCA? I’m building out a 2012 FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Special Edition to overland. Nothing crazy…just running established trails with a RTT, steel front and rear bumpers. Based on those variables, what UCA would you recommend? Thank you!
@@foskco87 Mickey Thompson Baja Boss 295s. They rub on the UCA. I was told by jba it's because the tires I have have big size walls, which makes it a bit thicker of a wheel in certain spots, in the spot right where the UPC is, so it rubs. I need to add a thin spacer to fix this, haven't done it yet.
My x axis joints on my spc uppers already have play in them after a little over a year. I dont wheel hard at all. Also they are out of stock everywhere at the moment, so I imagine there is a lot of people with the same problem right now. Pretty salty about this.
@@xack5810 I doubt it makes any difference if you are original owner or not as vehicles change hands all the time and they can tell by serial numbers when it got made etc. to see if it was in the era of the defect batches. I had 2 pairs warrantied and I didn't even lift a finger or deal with SPC directly for it. The 4x4 shop I had my lift done at was inspecting everyone with SPCs and SPC fully owned the issue and gave anyone with X-axis issues new ones. I know sometimes companies try to deflect everything and wiggle out of it but that was not my experience at all. Newest pair is fine after 2 years use.
Awesome video man! The only thing i disagree with is the SPC i run those right now and worst ever! My ball joints and upper control arms are always breaking i have no clue as to why! Im changin now yo JBA heard alot of good stuff abiut then
What no one really talks about is wha the built in high caster does. They all push the tire closer to the cab mount thereby causing tire rub. It would be much smarter to use an adjustable lower control arm. But so far I’ve inklusive found one manufacture that makes one that pushes the tire 1” forward away from the cab mount and thereby increasing positive caster.
Hello, good evening, I just saw your video about different upper arms for trucks and I needed to know for a 4 runner 2021, I want to install a 3-inch lift kit with 285,70,17 tires for daily use but with offroad ideas, which upper arm could I use? recommend that they are not so expensive by the way I love this kind of information about upper control arm
The forged steel attribute of the SPC arms was not mentioned, they are way stronger than welded tube UCAs. True, SBC is an alignment centric company, but remember SPC bought Bryan Kudela’s Light Racing company. Bryan is literally the godfather of the trophy truck. Otherwise great video.
Love this video, I have a 2021 4Runner 4X4, with Eibach suspension, Front PRO-TRUCK Coilover 2.0's, Rear PRO-TRUCK Reservoir Shocks and the Load Leveling System. Which upper or lower control arms will go perfect with my system? iIts my daily drive and off road as well.
If you are daily driving it and you don't do much off-roading, You can use SPC uppers. Also, If you go bigger tires and do a lot of wheeling. Total Chaos is your best choice. There is no need to change out the lower control arms.
The tubular designs like icon w/ the delta joint or the accutune will always grant more sidewall clearance. The JBA's are the worst for sidewall clearance issues when fitting larger tires.
Other than SPC. Which of these UCA’s are adjustable for castor and camber? I didn’t catch this on this video. I’m adding 305 or 315’s on my 4runner. DD, weekend warrior and more advanced trails. Right now I have icon deltas
Dobinsons billet. Comes with a spacer for the back side for high caster or move it to the front side for standard caster and the bushing eyelets are threaded and can be adjusted during a normal alignment procedure.
Twan…. With off-roading and overlanding getting so popular, and people trying to take advantage of the aftermarket parts, what are some ways to ensure you’re going to a quality off road shop? I know for instance there is a local “off road” shop that some praise, but others have had terrible experiences. If you’re new to this stuff, what are some questions to ask or things to look out for when choosing a shop?
Hey! I would talk to the shop and get a feel for it. Here at R4T, we don't try to sell any particular product to you. We will always ask what you are using the truck for and then advise you which route to take depending on your budget. If a shop tells you to get this and that without any explanation of how it works, then I would be more worried.
Hi all! Thank you for such good video! Could you please advise 🙏 What is the best UCA option for on-road usage? Like 95 % on-road and 5 % light off-roading. Thanks for reply!
The red JBA's are attractive but the adjustability of the SPC is optimal but there all have Goods and bads including the billet models and just not easy to choose total chaos also has flat style over tubular as an option
SPC has fantastic customer support but they really don't last. In 20k miles the ball joints went bad and in 25k the bushings went bad. They replaced everything no questions asked but its a love hate relationship for me since they don't last but they stand by their product
I had JBAs and the boots failed and cracked on mine and my buddies within 3 months. Be VERY careful when you buy JBAs and make sure they have the updated boot and hopefully that truly fixed the problem because I had to go out spend more money on a different set of UCAs. Great content!
Lol you didn’t have to go out and spend more money, you just needed a new boot. JBA has pretty good customer service, I bet they would have sent you a new boot.
Doing alignments on the style that adjust at the upper mounts freaking sucks. Takes a lot of time I have installed many many Toyota coilover kits. Icon box design is what I installed the most
Why would a non adjustable , high caster UCA go to a specialized alignment shop ? It’s literally no different than adjusting factory suspension just with a bit more caster pre-built into them.
quick question, does the icon or old man emu provide more clearance than 4runner stock? I need to run the reservoir hose of the BP-51 under it and I don't want to arm to jam/compress on the hose.
If you don't need super adjustable. Stock if just fine. I've been wheeling with my stock upper arm for years out here in AZ. 0 issues they do not max out before your CVS anyway. So popping ball joints is a non issue for the fj.
