    Learning a language should be an elective for students. (We had a choice of Persian or Arabic at Sadiq Public School, Bahawalpur). Unless the Arabization brigade wants to keep the masses working as labor in these Gulf countries, there is no need for compulsory Arabic. Promote math and science as compulsory subjects if this country has a chance to come out of the third-world lifestyle.

    Urdu should be declared the sole official and national language of Pakistan. And, the Roman script for Urdu language should be adopted, so that Urdu language can easily be used for the medium of instruction and even at government and judicial level. Script doesn't make any difference to any language, so I think linguist should think about making modified form of Roman script for Urdu language. Turkish was also written in Perso-arabic script, but later Turkish government eliminated this script and implemented a modified form of Roman script which, in turn, surprisingly facilitated huge jump in literacy rate from 30% to 95% within a span of a year.👍

    The Pakistanis are predominantly of Indo-Aryan ancestry. Why don't Pakistanis acknowledge their ancestry and ancestral language, Samskrit and stop speaking a language with predominantly supplanted Parsi, Turkish and Arabi words rather than the indigenous Indo-Aryan words?

    • @Hindutashravi
      @Hindutashravi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Language has nothing whatsoever to do with religion and has to do with nationality and ethnicity. Samskrit or Hindi is not a Hindu language but is the Indo-Aryan language and the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan are predominantly Indo Aryan and once they appreciate their national identity and ethnicity , a revival of nationalism will inevitably result in the discarding of the alien predominant Turco-Persian vocabulary and the restoration of the indigenous Indo Aryan terminology and script.
      In the French language, there is the Académie française which regulates the excessive usage of foreign words in French. In Persian, there is the The Academy of Persian Language and Literature to protect the purity of the Persian Language. Ferdowsi, in fact, was a motivation behind Reza Shah's decision to remove the foreign loanwords from Persian, replacing them with Persian equivalents. In 1934, Reza Shah ordered to rebuild Ferdowsi's tomb and set up a country-wide ceremony in honor of a thousand years of Persian literature since the time of Ferdowsi, titled Ferdowsi Millenary Celebration, inviting notable Iranian and foreign scholars.The academy strives to protect the integrity of the Persian language. It heads the academic efforts for linguistic research on the Persian language and its sister Iranian languages. It has also created an official orthography of Persian. The attention of the academy has also been towards the persistent infiltration of Persian, like many other languages,with foreign words. In Turkish, the Turkish Language Association (TDK) was established in 1932 under the patronage of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, with the aim of conducting research on Turkish. One of the tasks of the newly established association was to initiate a language reform to replace loanwords of Arabic and Persian origin with Turkish equivalents. By banning the usage of imported words in the press, the association succeeded in removing several hundred foreign words from the language. While most of the words introduced to the language by the TDK were newly derived from Turkic roots, it also opted for reviving Old Turkish words which had not been used for centuries. However, In India and Pakistan, we should not endeavour to purify Hindi or Hindustani and rid the language of excessive Arabic, Turki and Persian words as that would be construed as communalism by the descendants of the Turko-Mongol and Persians like the Geelanis and Owaisis who under the garb of communalism and antagonism towards Hindus subvert Indian Nationalism amongst Indian Muslims under the façade that they are the leaders and spokespersons of the Muslim community in the Sub-Continent of India!

    The analysis by PH is largely correct, and I concur with that. However, I'd much rather keep the study of Arabic as mandatory, particularly the classic Arabic aka Jahiliyyah Arabic. Muslims actually don't understand Quran. And they go through teachers who have a vested interest in reinterpreting Quran in light of traditions, rather than the other way round. I can tell you the core language can be learned very quickly by the Urdu speaker; Dr Israr created a six month course, and it is a good course, purely on pedagogical grounds. So my argument is that benefits exceed the costs.

    I think Classical Arabic is not that problematic. My problem is not with this decision. It's an overall good decision. My problem is I think this an politically motivated decision in order to run away from other domestic issues which has not to be thought thoroughly hence the good things about this are almost negated. Is there an good classical Arabic teaching system? I recommend the darus ul lugahti Arabiyya, it's a very good book provided it has a good teacher. As a Kashmiri, I know an very good Arabic teacher locally who teachs in such a way that it's not even exhaustive and we used to love studying Arabic from him.
    I also think minorities should be exempt from this law.
    However, have they thought this thoroughly? That's the big question which Pakistanis should ask, practicing as well as non-practicing Muslims should ask this question.

    A discussion by secularists and the initiative is politically motivated. The move to make learning Arabic mandatory is a good one but not for all the justifications offered by the government. It would benefit learning Urdu since Arabic is a major source language like Latin is to English. Above all, it would go some way toward enabling students to understand the Quran if not thoroughly. The employability argument though is not valid. What is valid is uncovering why local/regional languages are neglected. Surely, they deserve to be studied as well!
