Most assume he was a Socialist coz he signed a Defense Treaty with the Soviet Union. In reality, Shastriji was a staunch anti-communist having seen Nehru's failures in the 5-year plans being his Home Minister and the diplomatic support CPI gave to China during the '62 War and that pak too had established ties with the Chinese. He was just using Soviet hardware to arm the Indian Military Forces coz he & Air Chief Marshall Arjan Singh had already anticipated pak will use India's fragile state to wage war. Internally, he had started dismantling Nehru's failed projects and started replacing them with practically efficient apparatus' for long term success. And the manner in which Indian Armed Forces decisively beat US supported pak would've definitely made the US re-approach India on Indian terms coz barring UK, even most NATO powers favoured India. Unfortunately, Shastriji ended up dead(or murdered) and we were back on the Soviet lines.
