Yes Robert Lindsay left at the end of season 4 to get his own show 'Citizen Smith' [though a completely different character despite the same name]. He was replaced with Karl Howman. Citizen Smith is well worth looking up if you are unfamiliar with it. I think there are episodes on here.
As mentioned, Robert Lindsay got his own TV series in which he was the star. It was shown on a rival channel, BBC. Get Some In was shown on ITV. Karl Howman went on to star in his own BBC TV series, 'Brush Strokes'. Howman and Lindsay had acted together in 1973 so there may have been a reason why he was chosen.
And I am the same technical age. They are 18 in 1955. I was 18 in 1975. Joined the RN in 1973. Was drinking lager & lime in 1971. Well you have to start somewhere. I live in France now. They don't have lime cordial. Or proper beer. Wines nice though.
Money. Simple answer. National service weren't paid the same as regulars. They'd want a bit of coin in their pockets to buy drinks for girls so a half would do until they could flash the cash and buy a pint.

It is a different actor. According to Wikipedia, the original Jake left after season 4 to get his own TV show.

All old school drill instructors were like that. I joined up in 1981 and things hadn't changed at all.
Some of it is fairly standard for that period. Some were a lot worse.
RAF Hemswell 1966 Drill instructors were definitely like Marsh,but made men out of boys!
