So no Lindsay any more, he went off and stopped being Smifff in order to be an even more legendary Smith as the 'Glorious Day' was about to dawn......POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!
The reason Robert Lindsey had a replacement was for him to star in Wolfe Smith in Citizen Smith a brilliant sitcom. Karl Howman after replacing Robert later went on to star in Brush Strokes another funny sitcom.
Just watched episode 1 series 5....Still finding it good to watch and the new actor i think pulls off the part pretty well....Instead of Robert Lindsay.....Was a shame though.Thought they could have put it into the story line that he had failed the medics course so badly....He had to re do the whole course again...Or Demobbed as unfit for duty !! (A victory for him though lol)
I agree, Howman coming in as a new character would've been kinder to the viewers, kinder to Smifff and kinder to Howman who must've known there'd be an air of resentment at him filling Lindsays shoes so abruptly, it wouldn't have been so hard to juggle the script to fit that, the erks or Marsh referencing him in certain situations would've given the replacement some charm even, imagine Marsh and Howman butting heads and Marsh saying "If you were that erk Smiff.." and Howman interrupting him with "yeah but I'm not Smifff am I.." Howman does well tho, funnily enough during some scenes in earlier series I found some of Lindsays mannerisms quite Howmanesque, they probably fought over a few parts through the years
Love the show. Never really understood how Commander Ruark was at RAF Minden and RAF Druids Water. Did they work it into the script? Must have missed it. Despite what has been said I believe Karl Howman was a good replacement for Robert Lindsay.🇦🇺
@@raymondwelsh6028 Basic training 'square bashing' was RAF Skelton, RAF Midham was medical training, bummed posting to Malta then back to UK and RAF Druidswater hospital. Ruark was the Commanding officer at RAF Midham, we only see him once when the outgoing CO hands over to Ruark. So He could have had a posting himself although in the time line he'd only have been in charge of medical training at Midham for a few months at best.

Could you refuse to do National Service in those days ? I heard some men painted their nails and said they were " queer " !! My father said he was sick of them ! He waS RAF ( 1935 to 1972 ) . He said National Service Airmen were just a burden and he got sick of teaching and supervising Airmen who didn't care , didn't want to learn and didn't want to be there ! It was a waste of resources and took away from those that wanted the RAF as a career and he was glad when National service ended !
I think it became too forced by this time to believe the continued inclusion of Marsh. And also by this time he had lost ALL his self respect, and we lost all respect for him as well. They should have left him at RAF Skelton. :>/ (still like the show though)
Marsh always has a place in the script. If they remove him then the whole series is nill and void. I do agree that they should not have replace Jakey Smith, they should have said he stayed behind or got demobbed.

Hmm. Well, I'll give this series a chance, but it seems a tad silly putting them all together again after the obvious conclusion at the end of series 4. Was it done for money, by popular demand or some other reason? I have just watched the first 4 series over 6 consecutive days. It seems to me that it will be, mostly, a rehash of situations we've seen.
Errol , apparently series 4 was to be the last , but it was the News of The World newspaper that campaigned to bring it back for the 5th series, by the time it was sorted Robert Lindsay had signed for Citizen Smith, so he had to be replaced.
no more smiffy damn sheme brilliant show none the less x
it really does lose something without robert lindsay :(
Agreed. I like Karl Howman in many of the shows he was in, but Lindsay was better as Smith as Howman was more of a joke caricature of a Ted.
A pity Robert Lindsay left.
Karl Howman was the replacement wasn't he ?
I thought this series was brilliant at the time, but never seemed the same without Robert Lindsay.
He was too busy leading the T.P.F. trying to get FREEDOM FOR TOOTING
Not the same without Smifff
Nice reference!
he went awol to do citizen smith on the bbc
The Gut in Malta, more tarts than a bakers shop
Great run ashore.
It had run its course by series 5 and was painful to watch.
