I own the Smooth 4, and agree that both are excellent. I use my gimbal 3-5 hours every week during Fall and Spring to record teenage soccer and lacrosse. I like the Smooth 4 for its build quality, smoothness, battery life and integration with Filmic Pro. The best feature by far for sports video is the large wheel that can be set as the zoom control. During non-sports video recording I use the wheel for smooth focus control.
The problems I have with the Smooth 4 is the small clamp, and arrangement of the motors (servos?). As you pointed out one of the servos can obstruct wide angle shots. Another of the servos is placed against the base of the phone. That blocks the port on most phones greatly complicating the use of an external mic, or battery pack. Who hasn’t found themselves unexpectedly burning through the phone’s battery quicker than expected? This servo arrangement complicates balancing, and makes adding or removing lenses during a game a cumbersome feat.
I have read that the DJI OM4 has small rounded phone clamps which doesn’t work well with even slim cases on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. However, the servos on the OM4 do not get in the way. Also, the OM4 is one of the few gimbals that has hardware support in Filmic Pro.
There are compromises with the OM4, but I may switch to it while I wait for the long overdue Zhiyun Smooth 5 to arrive.
I will miss the wheel for smooth, and precise zoom control.

This is gonna sound really lame to a lot of you young guys but what was a big point for me was the ease of the Smooth 4's low mode. I am tall and 60 years old and have bad knees and hips - getting down for those nice low shots isn't easy for me any more! I know this is a bit niche, but I thought it worth mentioning for other videographers with limited physical mobility. Thanks for a informative video. 👍

What about compatibility with the phones and their standard apps in android and ios? I think this is a killer criteria, for example the DJI OM4 and its problems with the standard android filming app.....

I bought an OM 5 and tried to download the DJI app to my Android Pixel 6 phone. Android warned me not to download the app.

The balance makes a difference no matter what gimbal you are using. You made it seem like you don't have to balance the OM4, which of course, it not correct. The centerline of the phone may, or may not be the center of gravity of the phone. I bought a set of counterweights for my OM4 because I have to slide my phone off-center to get the ultra-wide lens out of the way of the motor. The main advantage of the OM4 is that your phone is not butted up against a stop like the Zhiyun (and a big factor in my getting the OM4 to replace my Smooth-3). The OM4's motors will get very hot if you don't keep your phone balanced - which is why DJI included that threaded stud for counterweights.
I found the OM4 to be not as smooth as my Zhiyun Smooth-3, overall. Plus I have to frequently re-calibrate the OM4 because it drifts about 1.5 degrees off of horizontal after 1 or 2 weeks. But, the advantages outweigh the issues, especially considering that the Mimo app is much better on Android than ZY Play.

One thing i hate about zhiyun is the bottom of your phone is pressed against the cradle so you can’t plug in a lapel mic. I have a zhihun and like it but it’s an older one. May go for DJI.
Yea thats true, also had the same issue lately. Dji just seems to me a lot more modern
My phone is Samsung 71. I want to buy DJI's OM 4 for this ... Can the DJI osmo pocket camera have more clarity than the Samsung 71?
Can you do a Focus Pull or Zoom with the DJI OM 4 ? I believe the Zhiyun Smooth 4 can do it with the wheel.
you could, but if you do it will be a digital zoom which will make your quality worse, so I don´t recommend that

by the way the gesture tracking is really good on OM4, yes it really works well and it's very practical if you want to film yourself and not worry about getting out of the frame.

Now for iPhone and Android users, I've heard the DJI favors more for iPhones as far as using the apps, All I'm really worried about is just a gimbal to use that is worthy and can fit with the galaxy s20 fe with a case or not.
You barely need the app, I don´t really know how good it works with android, but by the time I tested it with the note 8 and the pixel 4 XL it worked no problem. I personally only use the app when I wanna create the 270 degree barrel roll- other than that I always just use filmic pro. It should fit the phone with a case no problem

Good to hear the smooth 4 isn't a dinosaur yet.
But it's easier to get into low mode while filming and transition out of it as it doesn't require to flip the phone.
Yeah its still good, but to be honest I wouldn‘t get a new one these days. There are quite a few other gimbals out there that are easier to use and cheaper

I sold my Zhiyun smooth 4, and I want to get the DJI OM 4. He brought up important points. Balancing on smooth 4 is time consuming and annoying. Also using he smooth 4 app uses up SO MUCH SPACE. What I mean, when I used the sooth 4 app to record my videos, it used up so many of gb’s. I was shocked and it was just a fee videos I took.
You will like the belancing of the dji om4, way quicker and easier

The shots where you can see me are shot on a canon 1dx mkii and the phone shots are shot with my iPhone 11 Pro

Thank you so much! By narrowing our choices down to 2 you have saved me a lot of sorting through the "best of gimbals." I do have a concern about taking the OM4 with my iphone pro max 12 in the back country without a case. Is it possible to put a case on with a hole drilled out for the magnet mount? I doubt this concern is not mine alone. Any suggestions?

Great review. What’s always missing in these reviews is whether the gimbals work with larger, heavier phones like the iPhone 12 Pro Max, and whether they can also be used with those phones with add-on lenses and filters, like Moment lenses and filters, along with the extra case you need to mount them.

depends on the app you are using.. with the OM4 you can swicht between horizonatal and vertical video

What about the zoom/focus wheel? A big big advantage of the Zhiyun Sooth 4. What about hard shocks, maybe on a bumby road or on sea? I'd be scared that magnet isn't strong enough. Also the music what starts playing automatically if you choose the automatic modes of the DJI, it sucks. For me 5:6 ;
I am not a fan of these wheels. zooming on a smartphone is always digitally which will make your videos look less sharp. On sea on a boat it works great.. on a bumby road.. i don´t know, have never tested this myself

You can’t award a point for low shots to the Zhiyun just because it’s a 2-3 inches inches taller then give a point to the DJI because it’s so compact 😂.
Get an extension pole or hold the tripod mount. + 1 DJI
Also the DJI is a far superior package with the quality pouch, magnet, phone clip (which you can also use to stick your phone to any metal surface) & basic accessories. Who wants to carry around the Zhiyun in a giant case that also doesn’t lock - it’s just foam. I ditched the case to my Crane M2 best thing I ever did. ....Then later you award the DJI for a better / more compact package.

Ps. The OM 4 is the best phone gimble atm.
It also has amazing integration with your phone and filmic pro etc. far far easy to use different modes within a few minutes you’ll learn all the modes. The the fast sports mode is awesome.
Great video. I am looking for a gimbal that I can use for ground shots while rock hunting. My question is, when in low mode, can you tilt either of them more towards the ground? I want to get more of the rocks/ground vs any of the scenery around me, which can also give away location details in certain cases.
You can use the joystick on the om4 to tilt i think
How strong is the magnet? I have a 190g OnePlus 7T and I'm wondering if that would be too heavy? Also with the clip magnet, does it have to be in the exact balancing point because my power and volume buttons may disrupt that.
I don‘t know exactly check out the DJI website, but the magnets and motors are really strong, so I think this won‘t be a problem. The magnet should be pretty centered, but I also think this won‘t be a problem

How is the carrying case more significant than the apps [Controls for the gimbal]?
Cause both apps suck. I have a seperate video about it on the channel
I use a protective cover on my I phone 12 and need to know if any gimbal will work if the cover is on the phone
djii says they do not support the iphone 12
I always use my iPhone 12 Pro with the OM4, check out the other videos I have on the channel. Maybe you need to put the clamp directly on the case. But for me it always works, even with an add on lens
What about using a wide angle lens? Can the dji use the "flash light mode" does the arm of the gimbal get away from the scene?
I never had any issues with the OM4.. with the 13mm Ultrawide on the iPhone 12 Pro it works flawless

I have a standard iPhone 12. As I've read elsewhere, is it true that the DJI OM4 doesn't attach evenly in the middle of iphone 12 models (by the way, in factoring in that, I would rather use the clip attachment than the magnet as multiple people I work with would be using it on their phone too)?
I use the 12 Pro and never had any issues.. and the regular 12 has the same form factor.. so should work no problem
In your next comparison, would you please have an App Compatibility category. For example, compatible with Moment’s Pro Camera app and FiLMicPro? How disappointed would you be to spend $100-200+ on gear that’s incompatible with the apps you use the most?! Might that make all the other categories a mute point??

1 more relevant point is charging while using and with Zhiyun is simply not possible as charging port is covered. This is why I will change my Zhiyun Smooth for the DJI OM.
Yeah. Not important for me though. 14 hours of battery life is enough for my usage

Did you had problems with big smartphones,as Example Note 20 Ultra ? i found my ZS4 can not keep phone in balnced mode over a minute when i put it in gimbal in protective shell. It gives me red light and falls down, When i put only phone without silicone case, i have to max out weight and then only it stays in position. I feel ZS4 has to weak motors and construction of holder is to small for such a big phone
Yea, the motors on the smoot 4 are not that strong. Also had some issues
