Yes! Thanks Peter. Been excitedly waiting for this! Also really interesting to hear your takes on plug-ins. You might want to discuss that drum plug-in with him. I know he said he built the drums in this. I think he has made his own sounds in several of his songs (digging in sand being one of them) so if he doesn’t have this ‘Damage’ he’d probably like your opinion. He did say that he used a new-to-him plug-in on the strings and since you liked them so you might ask him what it was. They certainly were beautiful and stirring.

I fell in love with the arrangment for this one. I mean he’s always such a good arranger but this is next level. I think my favorite thing about it is how unpredictable he made it: so many feint chords, and unexpected breaks and suspensions... and the in-and-out consonance of the harmonies in several places. It’s like he forces you to listen at his pace, and in his style. Nicola Morgan said on writing, “Punctuation is a fabulous tool for controling your reader-you even get to control when they breathe. That’s what I call power!”
Castellucci has definitely mastered this in music. As a writer I find that aspect of his style really inspiring.

As a patron of Geoff and VoicePlay, despite his modesty, my favourite things about his subs is when he sits there, without really trying, and just sings them as if it's part of normal conversation. ❤

I also found it interesting that Peter felt this was a normal key for this song. For me I’ve usually heard this on handbells. Much higher pitched. That and I’m older. My intro to this song was an ad for Andre champagne that was also higher pitched and had a lot of glasses clinking in time for the bell sounds. They ran that ad for years in the ‘70s & ‘80s for the pre-New Year season.
For me Geoff’s version is as heard from inside the cathedral belfry.

Thank you for the entertaining and enlightening R&A! This is such a beautiful and innovative arrangement! It shook me right out of a christmas-stress induced mood slump.
It's another proof of his dedication and skill that Geoff can take a rather repetitive song he finds not very enjoyable, and produce such a stunning result. And it's a testament to how well his "boss" knows us, that she allegedly said "Do Carol of the Bells, and make it epic. The fans will love it." Kathy knew Geoff would deliver. 😁

Yours is the analysis reaction l was waiting for!
    And you delivered!
Thanks for pointing out some elements l previously missed, especially that 'missed beat after build up' thing!
As l am more of a mean old Mr. Grinch than the cheery jolly kind of person, l admit traditional carols are... difficult at best...
But this GOTHIC version of a carol, eerily haunting & sinister, yet drop dead gorgeous at the same time, THIS I can relate to!
And for details, l love the subtle nod to this carols ukrainian origin by the blue/yellow color scheme in lighting and clothes, as well as the not so subtle nod of the brokwn church bells in the cover art.
Imho this carol is sung as a war song of a nation defending itself against a superior foe invading them.
I have given up to name my favourite Geoff song, or even to establish a Top10. It's more of a spectrum and the top positions change with the mood. But this one will bubble up a lot l guess.

I think the more I listen, this IS the best, my favorite Geoff song! Not only is it really well arranged and well thought out, and brilliantly executed, I think there is much he has thought about in nonmusical terms as well. It's a Ukrainian carol, and (at least to me) thinking of all that country has endured in the war imposed on them by Russia, the fact that this comes off as more of a WAR anthem is not lost on me. He sounds like he is encouraging a flagging army with that rich majestic voice! It could simply be my reading into his intentions my own point of view, but hey, that's what good music does!

YES! Finally! I've been (im)patiently waiting to see your reaction to this epic Christmas Carol. The look on your face has me excited 🥰
Do I really need to answer which is my favourite?

Dude. Small suggestion. Good bass response is a must. Great analysis and review friend. Happy Holidays

Ngl that D1 sub had me going straight back to Rains of Castemere by geoff to compare them because it was the closest D1 i could think of

If you don't have good bass headphones, you should get the Razer headphones that Mortius has. He can hear all the bass notes vibrating in his ears.

    "We're all thirsting for it."
Yes, the G1 is definitely what we're all thirsting for 😏🥵 What a beautiful chord in "Raising their sound" 🥰 (I guess it'd be a flat 7 if we're living in minor 6 for the song? Minor keys mess with my Roman numerals lol!)

That chord REALLY struck me, too, especially with the bass going up a semitone, I think, instead of down, and coming in slowly but hung on very briefly peaking at the end. Chills! I've watched a dozen reactors hear that, make 'that face', but very few have mentioned it.

Carol of the Bells is Ukrainian. So why the yellows and blues in the set. More attention to detail not just in the music. Amazing.

He has said in the past that his subharmonic notes generally require a mic and amplification for Voiceplay's live shows. If sound engineering lets him do songs like this, I'm all for it. This was just epic.
