Never saw them live but the music lives on with many fans and old bandmates. Got to hang out with Tim for a day before he passed. One of the best days ever. My favorite band ever. X

Thanks for reacting! Cardiacs is an absolutely amazing band that most people just don´t get. I´ve spent 40 years flying the Cardiacs flag but most people just seem to hate them with fervour. Tim Smith (RIP) was a genius but never really recieved the acclaimation he was due. Feel free to dive deeper into their world and I´m sure some folks would recommend listening to Dirty Boy which is considered by some to be their greatest achievement. Don´t do it! Save that for later and delve into A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window. Or the fantastic On Land and in the Sea. Careful though Mr Edge, they are soo good they can really really ruin your taste and appreciation of "other" music. Greetz from Germany.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am interested in hearing what else they've done. I don't know if they'll ruin me for others, but hopefully, I find another band to add to my collection! Grüße auch an Dich!

IMO, the album 'Guns' is a poor starting point for Cardiacs. I'd instead recommend going back to their classic lineup recordings, if only to acclimatize to their musical vocabulary, esp beginning with 'a little man & a house', and ' songs for ships & irons'.

Cardiacs are simply one of the greatest bands ever a simple mix of psychedelia, punk, pop, prog, classical, folk, and outrageous talent. Live they were simply staggering suggest checking out the rehearsal video tales from the rotten shed or to see them in their full glory anything from the concert movie all that glitters is a mares nest with the full seven piece line up. This isn't even a track i would suggest very straight forward for them start with a little man and a house, don't even try to make sense of the lyrics but there is certainly poetry in there or big ship, fiery gun hand or for more prog the everso closely guarded line the last track on tthere second album on land and in the sea the whole album is genius but then again they all are

I think The Stranglers have a good claim to be the first prog- punk band. They were generally sneered at by the rest of the genre for being too old, being able to play their instruments and the intricate keyboard work from Dave Greenfield. Walk on by with it's extended instrumental passages and golden brown with that 6/4 5/4 riff.

Tim Smith called his stuff psychedelic music or simply pop. Its interesting that you should mention The Who at the beginning, as Tim Smith learnt musical notation from listening to The Who's Quadrophenia along with a score of the music. He wrote out the music often for his early songs in an idiosyncratic and sometimes very funny notation if you ever get to see the repriductions. Later, he used notation less often, though the masterpiece for me of this album 'Guns', their final completed album, 'Jitterbug (Junior is a)' was and you will understand why when you reach the final section!

It always fascinates me how so many artists with such divergent styles can be so interconnected. It feels these days like they're all so much more disconnected than they were 30-40 years ago, and yet the threads remain, linking so many artists to one another. Thanks for watching and for the info!

I've seen a lot of bands live and these were, without a moments hesitation, the best - This was late 1990's. Most hardcore fans would probably tell you they were better a decade or so earlier. I wouldn't say this song is particularly representative of their body of work.

Speaking of The Who, Tim Smith taught himself how to read music by following along with the score of Quadrophenia while listening to the record.

It's odd, but the "contradiction" in Cardiac's music imho is not so much about whether is prog, punk or a mixture or crossover: especially if you would dive into more of their music I'd say the controversy of Cardiacs is they make a bit of a "not-too-serious" impression in their whole presentation while at the same time being In-cre-di-bly layered, deep and _very_ smart. AND heartfelt, and that's what might come across as jarring to some. It's intense, it's wildly varied, it's at times just completely bonkers (but in a good way - check stuff like Tarred and Feathered, R.E.S or Jibber and Twitch) and many of their songs have this sort of vibe. It's youthful and "immature" (for a lack of a better term) - yet incredibly skilled musicianship and that goes against what many consider to be "musically appropriate". It really _is_ a rabbit hole thing if you'd dive into their whole discography, but I would highly recommend them to anyone considering themselves open minded and adventurous. Once it does catch on there's a whole lot of fantastic, amazing stuff to discover.

Love seeing new cardiacs reactions pop up..going from the late 70s and their archive cardiacs album ,despite sounding rough and ready really has some zappa-esque moments, i would suggest watching as cold as can be in an English sea from the rotten shed or listening to ditzy scene, ideal or dirty boy

  • @cloveroutofhell

Tim Smith, the composer/singer/guitarist for the band apparently hated the term progressive punk ("pronk") opting instead for "pop" or, one of his favorite phrases, "it's all just tunes." The latter doesn't quite suggest genre-less-ness, but moreso that the genre doesn't matter.
5:18 There are a lot of time signature changes in this song. Tim's use of time I consider generally quite devious. I think most of his time signatures don't really make themselves stand out, and are usually in service of the song. I've already worked it out once before so in case it's of any interest, I'll put the time changes for the whole song as a reply.

It should be worth noting that while Cardiacs got most of its audience from the Prog (and to some extent punk scenes), they always rejected both labels, with Tim prefering "psychedelic pop". End of the day really the only genre they belong to is their own one.

Straight after that on the album is a "secret song" after something like a minute of silence. It's called *Secret Like Swans* and is maybe more like an alternative Beatles song than anything punk. In the beginning it sounds like they got access to a church with a full church organ, and it's an "organ song" to begin with. Then the band kicks in with other instruments. The organ is really grand, though. (Tim Smith's version of Michel Polnareff's Le Bal des Lazes, maybe.)

@@BleedingEdgeProg You're welcome. Let me see if I can give you a nice link to the Polnareff song, too. (It's just plain beautiful).
      th-cam.com/video/tPxajzP-2jQ/w-d-xo.html
(The one with footage from the Young Queen Victoria movie is still on TH-cam. Good. It doesn't match the story, but is romantic, and of the right period in history, so it kind of fits, "emotionally".)
The actual story is the thoughts of the ex lover of Jane Laze, daughter of Lord and Lady Laze, as he hides outside in their shrubbery as her wedding reception proceeds, fists clenched in anger, dying of hate. (The lyrics are somewhere along those lines. Might do to get a translation.)
And then if you want to hear another church organ (this one related to Cardiacs again) specially selected to have "the right sound", maybe look for "Abandoned Lighthouse - William D Drake and Louise Kleboe". It's not famous, but it's got tons of atmosphere. It's just not as famous as it should be, that's all.

With regards to the lyrics, they're best enjoyed by just letting them create weird images in your head rather than trying to find any specific meanings.
