Jon Poole is amazing. The guitar solo in Fiery Gun Hand is easily one of the greatest ever recorded.

Sing to God is one of my favourite albums of all time. I remember being a teenage guitarist, who was learning about playing in key, and trying to learn all the chords from Dirty Boy. That song alone made me realise any chord can follow any other if it sounds cool.
Once at a gig some old left field music geek said all my key changes and odd chords were like Cardiacs. I’m forever chuffed someone spotted that influence on my playing as that band at the time didn’t sound anything like Cardiacs overall.

Great interview with a lovely bloke. Got into Cardiacs late, managed to see em live a couple of times, then had tickets for another gig that was cancelled due to Tim’s stroke. ‘Sing to God’ is an absolute masterpiece but think that the next album ‘Guns’ tends to get overlooked, I think it’s lovely, more relaxed and reflective.

IIRC there are sequenced drums on all but four songs on On Land And In The Sea (those being Fast Robert, Mare's Nest, Buds And Spawn and the mighty Everso Closely Guarded Line, so it's definitely not a case of only doing the "easy" ones! More down to budget I expect.) The programming is very good though, imagine doing all those tempo shifts on 1989 sequencers.

Thank you. I'd never heard of Cardiacs till a few days ago and I saw it on your underrated bands. They are brilliant. Now I'm listening to everything I can. Of course, lots of my younger friends know them. I think it's because I was 60s and never liked the 80s much. I think they're going up there with Beefheart and Zappa. Wish I'd seen them live.

Some shocking facts in here as well (drugs and drum machine), but it doesn't ruin the album.

    Great interview Andy
The reminiscing about influences, made me think that there must be all these musicians everywhere who may perceive that their large array of disparate influences are probably singular to themselves, but then you hear conversations like this and think…Huh !!! …these guys were into the same stuff as me ??? ( like it shouldn’t be possible lol).
This has happened to me before on some of your vids but tonight it was doubled up on, with the two of you at it lol

Cardiacs are the best band ever. Jon was great 👍 in the band, so many great ideas, compositions and arrangements on there. Sing to God is, indeed a musical document - an epic double record of the imagination. #cardiacs

Ahh, the great Random Jon Poole himself. I was introduced to him in a different way, being a massive Wildhearts fan.
Bit of research later, and learning about Cardiacs, I managed to find a copy of Sing To God in HMV. Oh, what a day that was. Musically very different to what I was interested in at the time, but never had a collection of songs spoken to me in that way before.
For months, Sing to God was the only album i listened to. Useful, having 2 discs......and I added to the collection. Ships and Irons, Guns, the Maresnest DVD, i wanted them all, and I was never disappointed! Mixed in with God Damn Whores' Lucky 13, and Ginger's projects through the years, I have a lot of Jon's music.
But Sing to God. Thats the best album of all time, in my opinion.
Oh yeah, I once got a high five, mid song, from Jon during a Silverginger 5 gig. That brief touch improved my own bass playing by 329%. True. 😊

Must be something about being born in the late 60s (as was I). Completely on board with what was said about 79-82 . Loved the same artists mentioned here and many more. Also still adore the God Damn Whores/Jon solo LPs as much as those All Spectacular crazies from Kingston (RIP Tim/Colvin/T.Quy).

I think that long after we've all gone to the starry skies, in 100s of years. Tim Smith will be viewed like Schubert, a composer never really known during his lifetime, but actually one of the true greats.

They shared a manager in the '80s. Mark Walmesley. It was he who arranged for the Mares Nest live concert film to be shot in the afternoon at Salisbury Arts Centre, with Napalm Death recording theirs the same evening (released as Live Corruption)

"That magic thing when things come together." ... In hollywood when a shooting session transcends... they call it "God made it click!" ... kind of ironic. Lack of ego... that's the whole point of Cardiacs I think. Generosity... heart.

There was never much info for fanboys like myself about Cardiacs. To this day I still don't know what Tim did the rest of the time. Did he and Jim have ordinary jobs for instance?

  • @john-mills-99
    @john-mills-99 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Jon Poole, a musical Virtuoso no doubt, and his contributions to the band invaluable, but I can’t help but feel that he seems to try to undervalue Tim’s core musical identity and it’s necessity for Jon’s output being so significant. Listening to most other Poole bands or projects, the difference in quality and intrigue is stark.
Once again, love Jon’s playing and he’s a true wizard, but this is just something I noticed and it irked a bit. I could be overplaying it in my head though, because then again he was talking about Sing to God in particular. Peace and love.

Hi Jordan, just dropping by to say, knowing Tim for 40 years, and Jon for 30 or more, you're an absolute dick. There's no point in trying to explain to an utter clod how profoundly hurtful these remarks are to Jon, who lost his close friend in such terrible circumstances, or indeed that he would obviously see them, but I couldn't quite bring myself not to let you know, what an utter prick you are. "Peace and Love"
