Chris, to correct Joyce there has been one trans critic Juan Barquin of Little White Lies who gave a negative review of Emilia Pérez and I very much agree him that it doesn't handle the issues in the best way. I hope the Academy won't fall for it and nominate it but I doubt at this point.
Marielle Heller adapting Nightbitch kinda felt like Noah Baumbach adapting White Noise. When you're dealing with a book that supernatural elements it's always hit or miss whether the material translates well on the screen.
I am really shocked that Cillian Murphy's performance in Small Things Like These is not being talked about nearly enough. He is out of this world! Movie just came out and critics are raving about his performance.
A trans girl here I can see some criticism about the movie not representing trans struggles, since emilia is treated like a regular cis woman after the transition Personally i don't see any issues with it, i don't think every movie with trans topics need to show the struggles we already see on the daily I'm happy for all the success Karla sofia gascón is receiving
Agree, something people forget when it comes to this specific movie, is that Emilia will leave a positive impact in the film industry if nominated for oscars More studios will invest in trans stories, invest more for awards campaign consideration, give opportunity to trans directors and writers to tell their own stories.
i dont see anything happening to emilia perez, everything sel has done so far has been perceived SO WELL. and stan twitter prob wont have an impact since everyone else loves her !! praying for them
Jean-Baptistery will probably not be nominated. Hard Truths is a small film. And it’s been notoriously hard for black women to get in the Lead Actress category. In the 97 year history of the Academy Awards, only 13 actresses have been nominated.
Angelina Jolie is not dropping out for playing a real person. The only real person of all the contenders this year. And bc she’s the only one, she’s probably going to win
Why does this female host always look so impatient, especially when she hears the other host reading reviews of Conclave? She’s almost rolling her eyes. So, is the style of this show just to look down on movies she doesn’t like?
Hey Chris - I think you need to be mindful about the way you talk about Emilia Perez and audience engagement and step outside your straight view and also not negate the complaints of this film from the Trans community - I know you have this as number 1 but man it feels off when you talk about this
I also think you all ignoring and missing the way this French director talks about Mexico which is I think the films biggest problem and audiences will critique - so with two poorly formed pieces in the script this film truly is a mess
I don't really agree with this framing at all. I'm not negating the complaints of the film from the trans community, but I also don't expect everyone in the trans community to like the film since the trans community isn't a monolith. I've read some negative reviews from trans people who don't like the movie, I've seen comments from trans people (and Karla Sofia Gascon) about why the movie is good. I've seen cisgender critics who don't like the movie discuss why it's anti-trans -- perhaps a bit disingenuous because they don't like the movie and want to disqualify it. I don't even love the movie, so this isn't really personal to me. I have it winning because, as I said in this episode, I think it profiles a bit like Green Book and a bit like Parasite/Coda/EEAAO. If it doesn't win, I wouldn't be surprised. But of the top contenders right now it does seem the most likely *to* win in comparison to Anora and The Brutalist and Conclave.
These mailbag episodes are the best.
We need a review from Joyce after she watched baby girl 🎉

Yup, there was applause at my screening of Conclave for Isabella. The theater was packed full in nyc.

I think Adrien is the Cillian, Ralph is the Paul. Timmy is the B Coop.
This is good!

If Adrian Brody wins a 2nd Oscar, he will be the male Hilary Swank. Winners with lackluster careers.

I think you guys are thinking because it’s the actress
rooting for sing sing and emilia perez!

Sadly you may be right. It’s gonna be another uninspired, uninspiring ‘she’s-the-big-star-in-a-biopic-no one-cares-about’ choice like Zellweger.
I need to send an email. I am pro Janine and Gregory!
YAY!

She’ll grow on you.
