What would the consequences be for millions of sick people around the world?

I agree with Ms. Dhananjaya S. that doctors and the entire medical community should have a sense of ethics around the business of drugs/medicines. What's the point of pricing a drug high that a common man cannot afford and he dies.. ? The medication could not reach him since he could not afford it. So, generic drugs seem like a only viable choice of survival for these patients.

Several years ago, Doordarshan (India's national channel) used to telecast customer awareness ads, which would tell people to pay right price for any commodity and always bargain for over priced commodity even if one finds it affordable, because poor people can not.

Kudos to India. The rich guys who own Novartis are stupidly greedy, to say the least. They would anyway not be able to sell their expensive medicines in India. The poor would just die out of a lack of treatment. So, I cannot figure out how does Novartis make a loss out of an Indian generic medicine? Secondly, the Novartis profits go to the owners and not to the scientists who developed the drugs. Some of their scientists could be from India and other third-world countries. The patent arguments could become quite complex when we begin to dig into the cost of research and the value of profit.

Medicine research and medicine production should be completely decoupled. Goverments should give good prize money for discovering a new medicine. In fact there should be a global fund for this. Once a medicine has been discovered, everyone should be allowed to make the medicine at a cheap price.

I want to add three things:
Firstly, please get your geography right @france24 at 0:32 and provide the correct cartographic depiction of india
Secondly, at 2:50 there's no breach in patent laws as it is fine to hold up to your intellectual property rights upto the prescribed time.......the problem is to claiming monopoly over the patent even after the prescribed time is over thereby evergreening the IP
Thirdly, it is being continuously portrayed as if it is the problem of millions of indians. Let me be quite clear about this, it is the problem of billions of third world people not just india but an approximately 150 or more countries whose healthcare and medical system depends upon generics. From somalia to sudan, mexico to mozambique, india to indonesia......all are the victims

Not really. The reduction in cost has to do with the fact that generic drug manufacturers don't need to spend as much on R&D. They only need to back engineer the drug once the patent expires after 20 years. It's the drug companies that resort to 'evergreening' which keeps the medicines unaffordable for a large part of the world, that pose a greater threat to life.
