  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The Mazda CX-30 is not an off-roader, but in this video we take this new model into the mud, sand, and rocks. Will it hold up or are we going to end up stuck? This car competes with vehicles like the Jeep Renegade and Subaru Crosstrek, both of which have some capability. How does this car stack up?

That nomenclature would make a lot of sense. I suspect that when the CX-3 was designed there was no thought of a CX-30. The Chinese market only CX-4 really threw a cat among the pigeons. I think they perhaps should have called the CX-4 the CX-6 as it seems to be CX-5 based only a bit larger and much better looking. It’s also a bit odd they didn’t release the CX-4 in other markets. I think it would have sold quite well. One would hope Mazda will sort this out but I think they’ve created a bit of a marketing problem for themselves.

    • @fmonk
      @fmonk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

It's laughable how stubborn people are in support of touchscreens. TSs are only workable if roads are smooth. But, most roads in real life aren't and you end up bumping into the wrong selections and taking at least twice as long to make the right ones. It's like trying to interact with the seat-back TVs on an airplane during turbulence. I mean, would you want your pilot to be diddling with his screen instead of focusing getting you to your destination safely?? Common sense is uncommon.

Great review, and thanks for talking to Dave Coleman about the AWD system.
I love that you test the cars in true off-road conditions! Driving off road, by the way, what I would really like on these cars, is a button that says "AWD off". Yes, "AWD-off" - because when you're driving into a narrow road in deep snow, there is a real risk of getting very stuck, having to call a friend (or a rescue chap, with the embarresing question about what on earth you are doing here). If you start off with only two driving wheels, at least you get a good warning.
Technically, this should be no problem, shouldn't it? Possibly, only available below a certain speed.

Its good to see that these designers are making an effort for upright posture. 90 percent of new vehicles induce horrible posture with their forward-tilted head restraints. The regulations are pretty restrictive and from my research, most whiplash testing was performed with dummies hunched forward (so the head is about 5 inches away from the restraint).
There has to be more adjustability to accommodate different body types.

Look at a current gen 4-Runner’s headlight lens…there’s a ‘growth’ on the outer edge that also spoils the airflow around the mirror structure. I love our ‘22 Turbo fully loaded red rocket…the precious few times I get to take it. My 4Runner is a great trick that does what I need it to without fail, and looks great. I was so impressed with the CX-30, I purchased a Crosstrek Sport

I wanted to like the Crosstrek, but for me (6'0"), the seats were awful, while the CX-30 seats are ok. And the Crosstreak auto trans is horrid. And the engine stop at lights so when you press the accelerator you have a 1 sec delay while the engine starts. Close Subaru, but no cigar. Now, the BRZ/86, there's another story!

Hi Tommy, great review first time seeing your videos and I am for sure going to be a new subscriber. I am from Canada and I just bought this car in the Turbo GT which is the top trim here. I love it, however, the only thing that I came to realize after buying it is that the ones that are sold here in Canada do not come with the chrome roof rales, or the front and 360 camera only the back camera. I have checked it out at all Mazda Canada Dealerships before and after buying it and it's like that at all of them. Would you be able to say why? if you can it would be very helpful as I would like to know why only the top trims in the US and Europe have it and not here in Canada.

U r right, THAT triple point of 3 panels should meet.
It looks as if the fender has been incorrectly positioned.
However, when you see how far away the door panel roll is you start to think it’s a deliberate by design.
I hate it, and I rarely use THAT word.

I wonder if you can bolt on the suspension to a 3 and have a lifted 3.

Nice review Tommy. Nice car Mazda. But I don't agree with Mazda's insistence on the rotary knob for MMI. There should be an option to touch the screen. Mazda suggesting that the knob's tactile input is "better even if it's harder to uses" (9:12) makes no sense. Harder to use = longer time distracted = less safe. With the optional touch screen, the user can decide which input is most direct (for the given task). You still look at the screen while operating the knob.

My CX30 got stuck in maybe 15 inches of water during a flash flood caused by Hurricane Ida. Insurance just totaled it. I enjoyed her for the month I had it 🙃

We just purchased a Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback AWD. Even though it has some obvious differences, as a lifelong Honda and Acura owner (27 years) I would say that Mazda's fit and finish rivals Honda's from the 1990s and 2000s which is amazing. The paint is flawless, no orange peel, the car feels super tight and the cabin well laid out. I do agree with Tommy that the fender line could have been joined better however I would like to hear Mazda's reasoning on it :). Oh and yes, the audio is that good!

RE: the fender/door/a-pillar thing - I read elsewhere that Mazda reworked a-pillars on the 6 to address wind noise. Could be an air deflection trick.

I test drove one today and immediately changed my mind about getting one. Could not get comfortable in the seat. I am very tall and had plenty of legroom and headroom, but the seat was not comfortable at all, and I was ready to get out of it after the test drive. And the doors creaked and rattled.

Doesn't that swooping corned on the hood have anything to do with shaping the air around the side mirrors for some sort of improved aerodynamics?

That's unfortunate the Turbo Mazda 3 will not have the trail mode button. I could see that being very useful in the winter on un-plowed roads.

    Great review. Lots of info.
If you could help me out with some info about the AWD system it would be great.
I have the European AWD automatic Skyactiv X 180hp model with the highest trim level and it doesn t have the Traction Control button. Just the regular TCS off one.
Why the hell not? 😄 I kept looking for it , thought they gave me the wrong model 😖.
And secondly, what would be the differences , because I m sure the off road algorithm is this there...does it just couple automatically?
Why do they do this? It s very annoying.
I also don't have the compass in the center cluster and no wi fi connectivity for the infotainment system. 🙄
    Thanks.

The point about people outside the car not being able to hear what's playing on the studio supplies to when the windows are rolled up 🙄. When the speakers are mounted in the door, the door acts like a soundbox to magnify the sound (ever pulled up to someone at the light and roll down your windows to hear the whole conversation of the driver next to you on his/her connected phone? It's quite hilarious).
