I really appreciate the extra ground clearance in a small suv vs. a car. If you live somewhere that gets six or more inches of snow in a single storm event, that extra clearance helps a lot! I was plowing through that deep snow in a car and getting stuck from simply not enough ground clearance. The SUV just keeps going with very little drama. That along with available AWD is why so many love the small SUV. You usually get extra cargo space too. I sometimes miss driving a sporty car in the summer but that peace of mind in a SUV during winter is easily a worthwhile tradeoff. I just ride my motorcycle more in the summer!
we get about 12-15 inches usually here one year we had a storm we called SNOWMAGEDDON with 35 inches ( Newfoundland Canada) and I had my Mazda 3 plow through some snow, however i am upgrading to a cx5 simply for the ground clearance because i know it would barrel through the snow much more effectively
Honestly my 23 cx30 base is quite sporty! The handling, steering, and throttle response are very reminscient of my old g37 coupe. Not fast, but good Mpg and more practical
Here's why CUV: 1. It's easier to get in and out of 2. It's easier to load things in and out of (including babies) 3. It provides better visibility on the road. 4. You never really worry about scraping or curbing any of the bumpers (in most normal situations) Hope that clears up the mystery as to why a lot of people prefer CUVs (all else being equal).
@John Q. I just wanted to know about the leg room (both front and back), looking for new car for myself and the kids, we already have an old minivan with 170k miles on it, I'm 6 feet tall, my 11 year old is already 5'3", so I was hoping for some comfortable 6 footer leg room. The only "SUV/CUV/crossover" thing that's good on gas and has 6 footer leg room is the Kia Soul. But they have a new sh|tty CVT for 2020 and I'm not going to buy a Korean car with a CVT, that's like buying a bathtub made out of cardboard. And the previous generation Soul has a 6 speed auto which is great but both engine options are self-destruct GDI engines. 🤷🏻♂️ Not many options. I'm not buying a gas guzzler just for legroom. I used to own a 2012 Mazda5, and for some retarded reason, they pulled the Mazda5 out of North America, I should have kept it. Hindsight. I would have bought a new one already and would not have made this comment if they still sold them here.
One of the main reasons why the people are turning to SUVs/crossovers/lifted hatchbacks is so that they can see (and be seen)! Have you been in a low-slung car lately? Try seeing around that F-150 parked on the corner, or that SUV in your highway lane. Visibility is important when driving, and it’s amazing that my fav TH-camrs fail to mention that factor when it comes to auto manufacturers & trends today.
Although this seems to be marketed towards younger generations it must also be noted that some older people such as me like it because it's easier to get in and out of compared with a sedan. I still like a good driving experience and my children live far enough away I'll never have to accommodate car seats so this is a really good alternative to a compact sedan or even a hatchback like the Mazda 3. Ease of getting in and out for empty nesters.
I'll take the CX30 over the 3. One reason - being 188cm tall I find that a CUV/SUV gives me a more upright sitting position that allows me to sit a little closer to the dash and thereby gives rear passengers a little more legroom. Notice this with my current Mazda 3 and my wife's previous Tuscon and current Santa Fe.
Proud of you! I had a totally different comment ready to post thinking you were going to trash this car because doesn’t have launch control or zero to a hundred higher than 3 seconds but you kept the review for what the car is and it is supposed to be. Great Job. Sometimes we like reviews of normal cars for normal people like this one. 👍🏼

It’s not slow.... I exceeded 100 mph several times in my CX5 (regular 2.5 NA engine) .... same engine in the CX30. And I do the same in my Mazda3 that I got when I traded in my CX5....
Also, really awesome to see you guys bring back the video editing to have fun playing with the design. Those are some of my favourite parts in your vids
I will wait for the CX-999 The dark gray and black paint help blend in all the anti-rust plastic that is not painted to save cash and so there is less paint to scratch or chip. The taller SUVs sit you higher for better visibility, and it is easier to get in and out, especially if you are 50 or older. To really test seats, go on a long trip.
Stay away from cylinder deactivation (or take it out for a drive where you're going 55 in 6th and the cylinder deactivation is active and make sure you don't mind the vibration). I have it in my 2019 Mazda3 hatch and the vibration really ruins the otherwise spectacularly smooth drive. Also, make sure the climate control works as it should: set the temp to 62 degrees or so and see if it blows super hot air (bad) instead of slightly warm air as it should. This is another thing that drives me nuts in my 2019 Mazda3 hatch... oddly enough it does start regulating temperature normally 10-15 minutes into the drive. Don't have this issue in my 2018 Mazda6 2.5T.
The CX-30 solved my two minor complaints with a Premium trim Mazda 3: the rear seats have A/C vents on the CX-30 which my 11 year old expects and the CX-30 has a light colored headliner which the Premium trim of the Mazda 3 does not. A light colored headliner makes the car feel more open. I would take the CX-30 for those two reasons.
One of the main complaints on 3 Hatch is lack of space behind rear seats for people that may have car seats and and/or otherwise don’t always feel like folding them down. Ditto a CX-3 Yet a CX-5 seems too big, too much vehicle. This is where the CX-30 slots. It’s about getting the bigger storage capacity that everyone thinks they need without going with a bigger CX-5 they don’t need. I had a 2013 Crosstrek. I bought a white SEL trim AWD CX30 this past week. I enjoyed the Crosstrek. I am loving this cx30. The acceleration is way better on this 2.5 l. I did a test drive on the Kona 1.6 turbo. What turned me off on that car was some review that said that the AWD version does not accommodate a spare tire. I am actually having fun driving this cx30. I really like the looks on this car, inside and out. The only negative I have is that the range on a full tank indicates 320 miles. My Crosstrek would indicate 420. Didn't do my homework there. I thought I had read that it had a 18 gallon tank. The specs don't mention the gas tank size on trim info. I bet the two top trims have the 18 galloon tank.

Rides a teensy bit higher than the 3 hatch, so you can drive over a little bit more snow that the town hasn't plowed. And looks way better than the current 3 hatch.
I have a CX 5 . Wanted to change to something smaller. Went to the dealership with a CX 30 in mind and I ended up getting the Mazda 3 hatchback . Didn't like the look of the CX 30 at all. Far to much plastic cladding and not as comfortable inside as the 3 in my opinion. Nope the Mazda 3 hatchback looks so much better. ( New to this channel and you to guys are great. Another great review as always! I really love the new interior design and the into system of new Mazda 3 and this Mazda 30. When cx5 adopted this new interior design and into system. I will buy a cx5 for sure.
This looks better than the mazda 3 specially around the rear quarter part. Mazda just makes better looking crossover specially this and the cx9 which i totally love.
Ground clearance is pretty important for people who go camping. Bottoming out in the middle of nowhere is not fun. I've also had some issues with getting to some camp spots with a sedan. A raised vehicle offers much better angles.
I live in a van, down by the river. You call it camping? Homelessness is not a crime. I wasn't blessed with good looks either. Should I kill myself? Suv elitist.
I used to be the same way, not understanding the SUV thing. Then, I moved to Texas. Here, drive throughs, bank lanes, and everything else similar is made for trucks. Not a huge deal, because you can usually go inside. The real issue is just the roads in general. At least here in Austin, there are many driveways to businesses/shopping centers and side streets that I cannot drive on with my Camry SE because the approach angle is so steep. I'll scrape up my front bumper cover either getting into or driving out of them. Even worse, some of the main roads are not totally level so the driveway and main road form almost a V shape. Then, there are roads that I cannot drive in the right lane because the storm drains have a deep cut off...the list goes on. So yes, I totally understand it. 5.5" of ground clearance is ok where the land is generally flat (the midwest) but if you live anywhere it's hilly in any sense, more ground clearance just keeps your car from getting damaged.
It's really to the point where I'm so over having to take detours so my car doesn't get torn up and get out of my car to get take out or take the night deposit every night for work that I'll probably be getting a Forester or 2022 Tucson.
Over here in Europe the CX30 comes with either a 122BHP 2l 4-cylinder, the new skyactiv-X 2l 4-cylinder with 180BHP and a 1.8l diesel 4-cylinder and - biggest points, with proper DRL and without that stupid roof rail things.
from an overall size (173"), the competitors to the CX-30 are: Kia Seltos (172.2"), Honda HR-V (171.6"), Chevy Trailblazer (173.5"), Jeep Compass (173") , Mitsubishi RVR (171.8") and Nissan Qashqai (172.4"). Would like to see reviews in lower ends trims.
I’ve had my eye on the Kia Seltos but it’s looking like the Mazda CX-30 is also a serious contender. How would you compare the two and what advantages does one have over the other?
It seems pretty nice, especially the interior. I can maybe see my future self ending up in something like this when my left knee gives out from too much clutch pushing and it becomes too hard to get in and out of my Miata.
Drove this car today. Really nice. Like it. I'm struggling between this and the Honda HRV. I'm a Honda lover but this CX30 is gorgeous, especially in that red. I still need to drive the HRV, which doesn't excite me quite as much. Help! Any feedback appreciated. Thanks. Dave in Ottawa, Canada
Love Hondas too.. I owned an HRV.. but when I rented a cx5, mazda 2 for a long drive… man you’d feel the difference! Im always tired after a long drive with my HRV but with Mazda? You feel like just driving around the city.
As someone who has to take frequent trips over the Sierras between Nevada and CA I need an AWD (I don't do chains). I don't know why the Toyota C-HR is even considered in this class since it doesn't offer AWD
@@darienmiller1032 Yep, it truly was. Still have one. But it, and the other Mazda minivans were discontinued either in 2016 or 2018, in favor of crossovers globally.
@@lego4virgo It's terrible that minivans are dying out not because of a lack of functionality, but because of a ridiculous stigma that they can't seem to shake off. Something like a Mazda 5 is everything the CX-5 and CX-30 is, but better in every way. You're getting even better handling, less body roll, better stability, an emergency third row, more cargo capacity, sliding doors, etc. It's beyond me how a vehicle like that couldn't even get sell moderately.
@@darienmiller1032 You're right. Interestingly, they seem to be getting a 'second life' in the used car market, and for the exact reasons you just mentioned here.
If anyone needs extra ground clearance for light off road with off road AWD calibration along with little more rear legroom , rear AC vent and easier way to enter it than this beats Mazda3 .
I got a cx-9 mazda because i can not fit in the rest of the models. And i have really big kids. Might have to go up to a ford expedition next after i pay off my wifes car
I'm going shopping for a new car tomorrow. I love the looks of the Mazda 3 Hatchback, but I'm 6' 4" and I think that extra height of the CX-30 will be preferable for ingress and egress, but that plastic cladding is too much! But I don't see the outside while I'm behind the wheel. My legs, knees, and noggin lean towards CX-30, but my heart and eyeballs 3 Hatch. I have a soft spot for Mazdas after many years owning an '88 MX-6 back in the day. I will be test driving both. Thank you for your reviews!
Hatches and wagons need to make a comeback. Honda apparently had pleasantly surprising Civic Hatch sales in the US, especially among younger buyers. ... so there’s a chance!
What about compared to the Crosstrek along with the Kona, C-HR, HR-V, and Qashqai? They all seem better than the Trax, Ecosport, and Kicks though. Out of all of these I'd go with the CX-30, Crosstrek and Kona. Least favorite being the Trax (mainly looks & perceived quality).
Would you take this over a Mazda 3? How about a Hyundai Kona, Toyota C-HR, Honda HR-V, Subaru Crosstrek?

Excellent video review for this brilliant CX-30 👍
3:16 California requires front plates, but a lot of people don't put one on (incl my ND MX5).
maybe they are also designing around their rust issues. Cant rust if its plastic
Baraka Gitari modern steel doesn’t rust. That’s old news.
3:31 I was like wait a minute that looks familiar
Best and quickest Mazda cx 30 review ever!! Less than 1 minute and it's fully summed up. A+ all around.
I literally laughed when Yuri floored it and then three second later you hear the revs.
I really wish to come in one day and have that 45 seconds review be the whole thing.
But i really like watching you guys so there's that.
Awesome review!! Best review channel, lots of quirks and features 😂😂
from an overall size (173"), the competitors to the CX-30 are: Kia Seltos (172.2"), Honda HR-V (171.6"), Chevy Trailblazer (173.5"), Jeep Compass (173") , Mitsubishi RVR (171.8") and Nissan Qashqai (172.4"). Would like to see reviews in lower ends trims.
If Mazda made a higher performance version I’d be totally on board
What about the Turbo?
I’ve had my eye on the Kia Seltos but it’s looking like the Mazda CX-30 is also a serious contender. How would you compare the two and what advantages does one have over the other?
It seems pretty nice, especially the interior. I can maybe see my future self ending up in something like this when my left knee gives out from too much clutch pushing and it becomes too hard to get in and out of my Miata.
I have bought 3 over CX30 for one major thing - 3 has manual transmission and I bought 2021 6MT hatchback which I am very happy with it.
Lol 😂I loved how you put an outro after you just said the CX30 is just a Mazda3! haha
Cx30 for sure, maybe in northern america SUVs dont make sense but in Asian countries were there are more potholes then smooth roads it does
Drove this car today. Really nice. Like it. I'm struggling between this and the Honda HRV. I'm a Honda lover but this CX30 is gorgeous, especially in that red. I still need to drive the HRV, which doesn't excite me quite as much. Help! Any feedback appreciated. Thanks. Dave in Ottawa, Canada
Get the cx30
Love Hondas too.. I owned an HRV.. but when I rented a cx5, mazda 2 for a long drive… man you’d feel the difference! Im always tired after a long drive with my HRV but with Mazda? You feel like just driving around the city.
As someone who has to take frequent trips over the Sierras between Nevada and CA I need an AWD (I don't do chains). I don't know why the Toyota C-HR is even considered in this class since it doesn't offer AWD
I still prefer the Mazda 3 over CX-30. Sedans & Hatchback > SUV & CUV.
At least the Mazda CX-3 feels and looks a little more 3-ish.
It's a shame that the mazda 5 couldn't be a part of this conversation, it was such a unique vehicle.
I would take this cx30 any day than the other competition u just said. Looks and luxury best in the class
"shout-out to Mazda for still doing real exhaust tips in 2019"
My speed6 doesn't have real exhaust tips :(
WHAT? WHAT? I am speechless, can you explain more. I always thought they are real because its Mazda and a Speed.
Not one but TWO references to other car reviewers, you guys are awesome. Keep it up fellow MAzda saying Canadians!
Did you guys photoshop the thumbnail so the gap is even more huge :)
If anyone needs extra ground clearance for light off road with off road AWD calibration along with little more rear legroom , rear AC vent and easier way to enter it than this beats Mazda3 .
Nothing like 3AM StraightPipes
Also I could care less how y'all say "mazda"
You COULD care less? That means you do care to some extent.
Thomas Biddle weird al flashbacks lmao
It's **COULDN'T CARE LESS**
You guys are great. I really appreciate your two inputs for cars. I feel you two care about what I care about. I think I'll get me a Mazda 3!
Thanks. Check tsp.TrueCar.com for the best pricing
Compact SUVs exist for one class of people. The ones who still want a sedan feel, but want to sit higher in traffic to see. That's it.
But if everyone is sitting higher in traffic, is anyone sitting higher in traffic
I don't understand this crossover craze.. I can't wait for sedans to make a comeback.
I can't wait for the "real compact" craze to truly come back. Mmmmmm low curb weights..
Hatches and wagons need to make a comeback. Honda apparently had pleasantly surprising Civic Hatch sales in the US, especially among younger buyers.
... so there’s a chance!
@@theconformist2399 real hatches not these shrunk down suvs. Weighing in close to 3000lbs.
I love to see Mazda 6 wagon in US markets !
I like it better than the Mazda 3.
Just lower it and make it the Mazda 3.
The c pillar looks way better on the cx 30
So entertaining ! But also so informative ! Great job, guys !
